Go on a Baby Yoda murder rampage with this Star Wars Battlefront 2 mod

4 years 2 months ago

It's not easy being green, so can you blame Baby Yoda for wanting to let off steam on some stormtroopers once in a while?

As spotted by PC Gamer, the Baby Yoda mod (which was first teased back in November) has now been publicly released, meaning anyone can take The Child for a drive in Star Wars Battlefront 2. It works as a reskin of BB-8, so you can roll around killing imps left, right and centre. Serves those stormtroopers right for hitting him.

As explained by nanobuds, it's not entirely perfect: BB-8's arm and wires couldn't be removed, and the latter occasionally fly out of Baby Yoda's space pram. It also leads to a rather strange animation where the pod spins around and slices all surrounding enemies. Which, to be honest, looks kind of terrifying.

Coffee Talk is a visual novel about brews and burnout

4 years 2 months ago

In Coffee Talk, a visual novel from Toge Productions, you're the proprietor of a Seattle cafe in an alternate universe where vampires, succubi, and all manner of fantasy races inhabit our world. They drop into your late-night coffee shop and talk things out. Regular problems. Relationship troubles, job struggles, all that stuff. Over time though, a theme becomes clear. A lot of Coffee Talk's cast touch on the issue of overwork and the marketing of passions. None encapsulate this more than your first ever patron and one of the only human characters you meet - Freya.

Who is Freya? She's a struggling writer, working day-to-day on whatever will pay her bills. There are some lovely short stories on her outlet's website, often based on the other customers who pop up throughout the course of the Coffee Talk. After work, though, she'll drop by as the sun starts to set and work on her original fiction. You're there, serving her espressos and chatting about her attempts fulfil her dream of publishing a book.

Freya's not okay. Her life is a tangle of various stresses, from the realisation that her daily job just isn't as inspiring anymore, to the ever-encroaching creative burnout that comes with monetising your passions.

Punishing plague horror Pathologic 2 is heading to PS4 this week

4 years 2 months ago

Developer Ice-Pick Lodge's masterful plague survival horror Pathologic 2 will, following its launch on Xbox One and PC last year, finally be making its way to PS4 this Friday, 6th March.

Pathologic 2 is a haunting, unforgettable experience for all sorts of reasons (and certainly not for everyone), but the first important thing to note is that you needn't worry about the "2" in the title. No knowledge of its predecessor is required, and it's more of a much-enhanced remake, expanding on the original's themes, than a sequel in any traditional sense.

Like its predecessor, Pathologic 2 charts the sudden decline of a small town on the edge of the Russian Steppe. As the game begins, you, as surgeon Artemy Burakh, return to this strange corner of the world, having received an urgent missive from your father - and things rapidly start to go wrong, as a mysterious plague rains death and chaos on your childhood home.

Marvel at ten new minutes of atmospheric Half-Life: Alyx gameplay action

4 years 2 months ago

Ahead of Half-Life: Alyx's long-long-awaited launch later this month, Valve has released around ten minutes of new gameplay footage - split across three separate videos - highlighting the kind of unique VR interactions, including three different forms of locomotion, that players can expect from the first-person shooter come 23rd March.

Video number one is mainly focussed on exploration, starting and ending within the cramped confines of a subway train. There are headcrabs and headcrab zombies galore, with plenty of moody ambience as Alyx prowls the shadowy underground station to pick off opponents one by one. It's also a bit of a showcase for the game's physics-based interactions - we see the player prising away planks with their hands and even, hilariously, plopping a hardhat onto their heads at one point - and it's all demoed using stomach-friendly teleportation movement.

Valve's second video is for those made of slightly stronger VR stuff, showing off continuous locomotion - a particularly nail-biting proposition given the impressive sense of verticality during the sequence. The bulk of this video takes place within the squalid interior of a crumbling building - although the sun-dappled snatches of City 17 outside look absolutely gorgeous - and it features its own selection of nifty interactions too.

Monster Hunter World: Iceborne's Furious Rajang and Raging Brachydios dated for March

4 years 2 months ago

Monster Hunter World: Iceborne players eager for an even greater challenge (and more cute little outfits for their hunters, obviously) won't have long to wait; the snow-covered expansion's third major content update is coming to Xbox One and PlayStation 4 on 23rd March.

As previously announced, Capcom's latest dollop of post-launch Iceborne content brings back two particularly miffed subspecies from previous Monster Hunter games. Monkey lovers can go face to man-sized fists with the Furious Rajang, while fans of very excellent theme music can get their slime-smeared thrills in battle with the Raging Brachydios.

Although Capcom hasn't detailed specifics, it seems reasonable to assume both creatures will bring their own dedicated quests, equipment, and armour when they arrive later this month.

Sony's Uncharted movie gets its seventh director

4 years 2 months ago

Sony's beleaguered, and quite possibly cursed, Uncharted movie - which has so far managed to lose a total of six directors since its unveiling in 2009 - has a brave new soul at the helm, this time in the form of Ruben Fleischer, the man behind Zombieland and Venom.

Fleischer's hiring (first reported by Variety) follows the departure of Bumblebee director Travis Knight back in January. Knight superseded 10 Cloverfield Lane director Dan Trachtenberg, who stepped in after Night At The Museum director Shawn Levy left the project. And prior to that, Seth Gordon, Neil Burger, and David O Russell were all attached to direct at one time or other.

Despite the revolving door of directors, Spider-Man's Tom Holland continues to lead the cast as a young Nathan Drake in Fleischer's movie, while Mark Wahlberg, who was originally set to play Drake in an early (and highly dubious) stab at the project, remains onboard as his mentor Sully. Additionally, Art Marcum and Matt Holloway continue on scriptwriting duties.

Dead or Alive 6 hair colour change microtransaction "a complete slap in the face"

4 years 2 months ago

Koei Tecmo is charging Dead or Alive 6 players real-world money to change a characters' hair colour.

This microtransaction, bizarrely, is exclusive to the PlayStation 4 version of the game, and is done via its existing premium ticket system. The tickets work out at one dollar each, and it costs one ticket to change a character's hair.

In one of the most egregious microtransactions we've ever seen, Dead or Alive 6 charges players to change a character's hair colour from 16 colours, but that doesn't unlock the colour for unlimited use thereafter. Rather, you're just paying to change the colour. A premium ticket is consumed every time you change a character's hair colour.

Here are some of the best Animal Crossing amiibo deals

4 years 2 months ago

Did you hear that all of the existing Animal Crossing amiibo will be compatible with Animal Crossing: New Horizons? It's great news if you've already built up a collection of quaint figures ready to become new residents in your village. (Actually, as Jonamok points out, the figures will unlock in-game posters and the ability to use them in photo mode. It's the amiibo cards that will bring them to your island). But what if you're missing a few? Well, here are all the best Animal Crossing amiibo deals we can find right now.

As comprehensive and complete as I'd like this list to be, unfortunately, many of the Animal Crossing amiibo are very limited - or completely out of stock in some cases. Amiibo restocks do happen from time-to-time, though. And with the increased popularity they'll be seeing with New Horizons out later this month you'd be surprised if Nintendo doesn't plan to capitalise on that.

If you can't see what you want here at this very moment, do check out our frequently updated page featuring all the Animal Crossing amiibo available to buy at Jelly Deals. Give it a bookmark and check in regularly as we find more on sale.

Explaining the move, Hamaguchi said because Red XIII joins the party later in the story, there's not enough time to flesh him out.

Garden Story is a game about kindness, exploration and restoration.

4 years 2 months ago

This weekend I fell in love with a blueberry. Then I realised it was a grape, so I guess I fell in love with a grape. In Garden Story, a sort of town-rebuilding RPG for PC and Mac, with dungeons and beautiful chunky pixel art and a sweet nature, you play as Concord, a grape with a mission of regeneration. The demo was available on Steam over the last few days, while the game itself is out sometime in Spring.

This is fairly well-travelled territory by now, but it doesn't stop Garden Story being wonderful. Your job is to restore a town to prosperity, harvesting stuff, clearing stuff up, knocking about gooey purple enemies known as the Rot. In the demo, you visit a new area that has fallen into ruin, do a few favours for a few people and then rattle through a mini-dungeon where simple combat combines with sokoban puzzles. Push those crates!

Combat and harvesting are all handled the same way: you have a weapon of some kind and you hit stuff. There's a stamina gauge to watch and enemies strike back every now and then, but the demo at least is very gentle. Alongside the stick I was hitting stuff with I also got a sickle by doing a solid for a lazy tomato, and there's a dowsing rod, which is essentially a fishing rod, that allows you to do damage too. Damaging people with a fishing rod!

The best value SSD for gaming hits £92 for a 1TB model

4 years 2 months ago

The best value SSD for gaming, the Crucial MX500, has reached a new low price on Amazon. Right now you can pick up this 1TB SSD for just £92, down from £110. That works out to 9p per gigabyte for one of the fastest and most popular SATA SSDs on the market.

In our testing on PC, we found that upgrading from a hard drive to an SSD reduced game load times by up to 60 per cent. That makes running your games from solid state storage one of the most cost-effective upgrades you can make to your gaming rig.

Console gamers aren't left out of the fun either. You can also put this 2.5-inch drive in a cheap (£8) USB enclosure to boost game load times significantly on both PS4 and Xbox One.

Riot Games' Project A is called Valorant, and it plays like a Counter-Strike killer

4 years 2 months ago

If there can be only one thing taken from my time at Riot Games' vast, lavishly fitted LA campus, it's that the mega-developer is desperately keen to prove they know what they're doing. Riot's pitch for Valorant, its upcoming tactical shooter seemingly named after a kind of industrial carpet cleaning fluid, is one based almost entirely on competence: the game will have the best infrastructure, the best attention to detail, the most committed, communicative ongoing support, and the most rigorously balanced gameplay of anything like it - even if it comes at the cost, seemingly, of character and heart and anything else like it. I've played about four hours and moment-to-moment it really is brilliant, right across the board. Exacting, oddly approachable, tense. The potential is there for Valorant to be the pinnacle of tactical shooters - but it also feels a bit back-to-front. This is a game that exists purely to excel, like the child of two parents who only agreed to conceive so their kid could ace its homework. A game that's very good at doing what other games have already done, but better.

Riot Games on Valorant's competition, toxicity, and why 2020 isn't too late for a team-based shooter

4 years 2 months ago

Project A, one of several games announced in a wave of 10th anniversary fanfare at the end of 2019, is now officially called Valorant. It's free-to-play, it's releasing in Summer 2020, and as you might have read in our lengthy Valorant preview, it looks pretty slick.

That said, our hands-on time with the game threw up plenty of questions, too. The most obvious one: why a tactical shooter? And why now, so long after Overwatch, Rainbow Six and Counter Strike seemingly cornered the market?

Then there's Riot's unusual opening gambit, opting to lead with such a huge blast of technical info, and promises about stability and anti-cheating, over introducing us to the world of this game itself. What will the in-game purchases look like? And, after a decade of League of Legends, what has Riot learned about curbing its huge problem with toxicity?

Now, courtesy of Steam Charts (thanks PCGN), we've learned that Counter-Strike: Global Offensive's concurrent new record is 924,045 players, beating its own concurrent record set only a few weeks ago.

A year since its last trailer, here's a peek at Soviet shooter Atomic Heart

Since then, a 45-minute segment popped up on a Russian-language gaming website, but other than that it's been eerily quiet... until now.

"Take a closer look at the laboratory of the USSR, which is used to carry out experiments on people and construct robots," teases the video description, which also confirms the trailer is created in Unreal Engine 4.

DF Retro: Revisiting the notorious Batman Forever on PC

4 years 2 months ago

When we first set-up Digital Foundry Retro, the idea was to revisit some of the most important titles in gaming history, telling their stories and using today's analysis techniques to reveal new insights about the games of yesteryear. However, obviously, not every game is a stone-cold classic and in the process of building a retro gaming library, sometimes I end up picking up some less-than-impressive titles - which can still hold a certain fascination. So it is with Acclaim's Batman Forever, a 1995 title that builds upon developer Probe Software's Mortal Kombat codebase to develop a co-op side-scrolling beat 'em up with some of the most baffling design decisions I've ever seen in a PC game.

In all honesty, it's possibly best to watch the embedded video below to see how this particular experience plays out because to begin with, Batman Forever seems to be a pretty typical example of the era. The neon-infused Val Kilmer incarnation of the Dark(ish) Knight patrols various side-scrolling levels, punching Final Fight-style individually named enemies until they're down. Optionally, the Chris O'Donnell-skinned Robin can join the fray for simultaneous two-player action, where the less dynamic duo seem to spend a lot of the time getting in each other's way. Everything plays out with the kind of digitised sprite work we saw in Mortal Kombat, which looked fairly impressive back in the day. We're hardly looking at cutting-edge fighting game mechanics, but we do get to enjoy a soundtrack from Tim and Geoff Follin and it doesn't look disastrous. Not to begin with anyway.

Riot Games' secret FPS "Project A" might be called Valorant

4 years 2 months ago

Riot Games' next game - codenamed Project A - is reportedly a tactical FPS called Valorant.

Riot revealed the game's existence back in October and since then it's been pretty quiet, but now Polygon reports that a fan Twitter account, ProjectAOnline, has revealed Project A's official name is Valorant.

So far, so what, right? Anyone can set up a Twitter account and photoshop some images. What makes this rumour seem credible, however, it that Riot fans have discovered a number of additional coincidences, including confirmation that Riot has registered a Valorant website in the same name, and is possibly behind the Twitter handle PlayValorant, which has stacked up almost 40,000 followers even though it's yet to post and was only registered earlier this month.

Here's a new-old peek at the next Dark Pictures Anthology interactive horror, Little Hope

Bandai Namco has dropped a new teaser for the next instalment of its Dark Pictures Anthology, Little Hope.

Well. I say teaser, but three-quarters of the trailer shows off predecessor Man of Medan's spookier moments, including clips of jumping YouTubers and influencers. Then we get mostly the same teaser we've seen before.

If you were hoping for a little more by way of the video description, I'm afraid you're going to be disappointed there, too. Sadly, we didn't get a precise release date, either; "2020" is as much as Bandai's prepared to confirm right now.

Call of Duty Zombies overlord Jason Blundell exits Treyarch

Jason Blundell, one of the chief creators of Call of Duty's popular zombies mode, has left Treyarch after 13 years.

In a statement published to Twitter, Blundell said his time working on zombies had been "special", and thanked the zombies community for helping to create "memories I will cherish for a lifetime".

Blundell began working on nazi zombies - 1-4 player bonus mode in which players fought against waves of enemies - back in 2007 for 2008's Call of Duty World at War. World at War was the first game in Activision's blockbuster shooter series to feature a zombies mode, although it was only playable once the campaign was completed. It would go on to gain huge popularity within Treyarch's Black Ops games as a fully-fledged mode separate to campaign and traditional multiplayer.

FIFA 20 gives some players an in-game button overlay to help EA improve responsiveness

In truth, this has been a long-standing issue with EA Sports' FIFA games, and despite the developer's best efforts over the last few years, community complaints remain.

In Theory: Can a four teraflop GPU cut it for a next-gen console?

4 years 2 months ago

A next generation console with just 4 teraflops of GPU power? Well, that's the rumour. While Microsoft teases and tempts us with the 12TF behemoth that is Xbox Series X, rumours persist that a second box is in development, designed to hit the market at a much lower price-point, undercutting PlayStation 5 while still being able to play each and every next-gen Xbox game. Lockhart is its codename and I find the basic concept behind its creation absolutely fascinating.

While I suspect that there are important nuances in the design that have yet to be revealed, it's safe to assume that the basic premise is based on the theory that graphics are far more scalable than any other component of a particular game with the idea being that Series X targets 4K while Lockhart aims for 1440p instead. This is borne out by the various spec leaks we've seen, which paint a picture of a console that has far more commonalities with Series X than it has differences. Leaks suggest that Lockhart has the same eight-core/16-thread CPU cluster as the Series X (CPU clocks may be very slightly different) while it still uses an NVMe-based solid state storage solution. As it's designed to run at lower native resolutions than Series X, we should also expect a lower provision of GDDR6 memory too: 12GB vs the more capable machine's 16GB seems likely.

Casual game-making through the years: an evolving, instructive joy

4 years 2 months ago

When you were growing up, how often did you wish a game did something a little differently? I had that urge a ridiculous amount of times. To an extent, it was probably because I grew up with a Commodore 64 for a long time and those games were frequently delightful, yet also extremely limited compared to the options we have now. Throw in a lack of money and I was simply grateful for whatever came along, but that didn't stop me dreaming of how I wanted games to play out.

The dream was an RPG where you played a footballer working their way up to glory. I tried coding it in BASIC, mostly by writing it down in a notepad rather than actually sitting in front of the Commodore 64. Predictably, it was not a huge success, but I liked thinking it through. It was a similar case for many an adventure game, too. I think I realised at that young age that graphics weren't going to be my forte so I focused on storytelling and the text-based side of things. I just wanted to make something. Anything.

This was the opening for the Shoot-Em-Up Construction Kit. Sure, it wasn't about storytelling but it was about creating your own levels, creating enemy bullet patterns, changing the behaviour of enemies, and essentially setting yourself up for a spectacularly tricky bullet-hell experience. You could even export your games for others to play and yup, they did. Commodore 64 magazine, Zzap!, showcased many SEUCK (as it was affectionately referred to) games on its cover tapes.

Netflix's live-action Witcher series casts its Vesemir

4 years 2 months ago

And now it's finally named the man who'll fill the shoes of Geralt of Rivia's friend and mentor, Vesemir.

Admittedly, it's probably not the name some fans were expecting/hoping to hear; recent rumours suggested that Mark Hamill had been offered the part of Vesemir (and Hamill himself expressed an interest in the role last year), but we know now that Danish actor Kim Bodnia will play "the Continent's oldest and most experienced Witcher", Vesemir, in season 2.

Amnesia, SOMA developer teases next mysterious game in newly unearthed video

Oxenfree dev's pub-crawl-in-hell adventure Afterparty heading to Switch next week

4 years 2 months ago

Oxenfree developer Night School Studio's well-received pub-crawl-in-hell narrative adventure, Afterparty, will be slinging one back and staggering its way onto Switch next Friday, 6th March.

Afterparty, which released on PC, PS4, and Xbox One last October, tells the story of Milo and Lola, two recently deceased best friends who hatch a plot to escape the eternal torments of Hell - a task that, thanks to a loophole, requires them to drink Satan himself under the table.

What follows is a boozy adventure covering the many and varied drinking holes along the River Styx. It's not all cocktail chugging debauchery, however; Afterparty is a candid character piece as much as anything, peeling back the layers of its dual leads to really pick apart the relationship that got them to hell in the first place.

GOG didn't tell devs about its new refund policy - and many are worried it could be abused

4 years 2 months ago

A few days ago, GOG announced it was changing its refund policy as part of a "declaration of trust" to consumers. Previously, refunds were given only if the game hadn't been downloaded and played, or if the game literally wouldn't run on a player's hardware: but now players will be able to request a refund at any point during a period of 30 days after purchase, no strings attached.

"Everyone at GOG believes in a 'gamers-first' approach," the blog post said. "The latest update to our voluntary Refund Policy adds another piece to this customer-friendly experience. And it all sums up in one sentence: starting now, you can get a full refund up to 30 days after purchasing a product, even if you downloaded, launched, and played it. That's it."

On the surface, it seems like a big win for consumers: you can test-drive any game, and if you're really not liking it for whatever reason, the refund process is painless and streamlined. The policy change also means GOG has effectively leapfrogged Steam's already-flexible refund policy, which allows players 14 days to request their money back - so long as they've played less than two hours of the game.

Monster Hunter World: Iceborne's limited-time Holiday Joy Fest is now underway on PC

It won't be long before Monster Hunter World on PC finally catches up with its console counterparts in terms of updates; until that magic day in April, however, Capcom still has a few bits of outstanding business for PC players to get through, and next on the list is the limited-time Holiday Joy Fest event, which starts today for those with the Iceborne expansion.

The event is functionally identical to that seen on Xbox One and PS4 last December, meaning that while Iceborne owners get to experience the first-ever Holiday Joy Fest in the Seliana Gathering Hub, base game only players can revisit the Winter Star Fest event in Astera.

It's looking like it's going to be a great time to snap up a console if you've been waiting for the big price cuts to come. The lowest price I can find right now, though, is this 1TB Xbox One S Forza Horizon 4 Lego Speed Champions Bundle for £169.99.
