Valve insists Index VR will be back in stock before Half-Life: Alyx comes out

4 years 2 months ago

Valve has said Coronavirus means it'll have "far fewer" Index units for sale than planned amid the launch of the hotly-anticipated Half-Life: Alyx.

The virtual reality headset-exclusive Half-Life: Alyx comes out on 23rd March 2020, and while it works with any headset that supports SteamVR tracking, Valve has designed the game to make the most of Index and its controllers. For more on that, check out Digital Foundry's guide to the best VR headset for Half-Life Alyx.

As such, Index has been in hot demand - and while Valve promised it will be available to buy before Half-Life: Alyx's launch, it sounds like actually getting hold of one will be a real struggle.

Stylish turn-based tactical horror RPG Othercide shows off its monsters in new trailer

4 years 2 months ago

Focus Home Interactive has unveiled a new cinematic trailer for Othercide, developer Lightbulb Crew's wonderfully moody turn-based tactical horror RPG.

Othercide was initially unveiled early last year, and it's an immediately arresting proposition - sporting a stark monochromatic aesthetic cut through with angry streaks of red. It also has some striking monster design - as its latest trailer can attest - all juddering limbs and faceless flesh.

Moving on from its stylish veneer, Othercide's turn-based tactical core has more than a touch of XCOM about it (albeit with perhaps a larger collection of undulating tentacles), and promises "roguelite features, deadly missions, limited resources, and permanent death".

Crytek and Cloud Imperium Games settle Star Citizen lawsuit

4 years 2 months ago

Star Citizen developer Cloud Imperium Games has settled its lawsuit with Crytek over the alleged misuse of the latter's CryEngine.

Crytek's lawsuit, which first came to light last December, argued its licence with Cloud Imperium only granted the Star Citizen developer the right to use CryEngine for one game. Since the agreement was made, however, development of Star Citizen has splintered off into two separate projects - Star Citizen and standalone single-player story title Squadron 42 - which Crytek believed contravened the terms of its licence with CIG.

Crytek was also unhappy that CIG had removed its logo from Star Citizen's marketing material, despite their inclusion allegedly being part of an agreement between the two parties to licence CryEngine at a "below-market rate".

Apex Legends' original Kings Canyon map is back

4 years 2 months ago

Apex Legends is getting a touch nostalgic this weekend, as the free-to-play battle royale game returns to its roots by ushering in its original Kings Canyon map.

Granted, they're not particularly long roots, given that Apex Legends is barely a year old at this point, but fans have been clamouring to return to the original, unsullied Kings Canyon since Respawn jettisoned it in favour of Season 3's World's Edge map last October.

Kings Canyon has returned to the game previously, but only in a special nighttime form, as used in Apex Legends' Grand Soiree and Fight or Fright limited-time events. From today, 21st February until Monday, 24th February, however, players will be able to traipse their way across the original, pre-season version until their nostalgia is adequately sated.

Bayonetta and Vanquish 10th anniversary: the new Xbox One and PS4 ports tested

4 years 2 months ago

Celebrating the 10th anniversary of the initial release of Platinum Games' brilliant Bayonetta and Vanquish, Sega recently released brand new ports of these key titles for PlayStation 4 and Xbox One. Developed by Armature and seemingly based on the existing PC ports, we now have the best possible console versions of these titles - but there remains the lingering sense that the conversion work itself is somewhat unambitious.

Priced at either £19.99/$24.99 per game or bundled together for £34.99/$39.99, the good news is that you're getting a pretty good deal here - and we'd definitely recommending picking up the bundle. These titles represent Platinum at the zenith of their powers during the Xbox 360/PlayStation 3 era and it's only a shame that similar conversions of Metal Gear Rising: Revengeance aren't available too.

Starting with Bayonetta, Platinum's brilliant action game plays out beautifully on all systems. Back in the day, users had the choice between an excellent Xbox 360 version (marred only by intrusive screen-tearing) and the frankly abject PlayStation 3 interpretation, produced by a third party for publisher Sega. In a sense then, the new PS4 port is redemption: the game plays out locked at 60 frames per second at a native 1080p resolution.

Here's a look at some of this week's best game deals

4 years 2 months ago

The weekend's here and the diary is clear so what better way to spend it than tucking into a game? But what if you fancy something new to play to tide you over until Doom Eternal or Animal Crossing New Horizons? Well, perhaps one of this week's best game deals will tempt you.

First up, many remasters of PS1 era classics are down to some of their lowest ever prices right now. Crash Bandicoot is there. Spyro is in too. I'm still disappointed that Croc hasn't been given the same treatment. One day, maybe. Anyway, you can pick up any of these for £20 on PS4 or Xbox One. Switch versions are also reduced for £24.99.

Meanwhile, Amazon has also brought back its lowest price on Call of Duty: Modern Warfare. If you missed the deal last month, you can pick it up for £37 again. Wes has been enjoying it a lot recently following the return of multiplayer map Rust.

Five of the Best: Beaches

4 years 2 months ago

Five of the Best is a weekly series about the bits of games we overlook. I'm talking about hands, maps, cats, startup screens - things we ignore at the time but can recall years later because, it turns out, they're integral to our memory of the game. Now is the time to celebrate them!

It works like this. Various Eurogamer writers will share their memories in the article and then you - probably outraged we didn't include the thing you're thinking of - can share the thing you're thinking of in the comments below. We've had some great discussions in our other Five of the Best pieces. So come on, what are you waiting for? On we go!

When I gaze out of the big windows beside me I see building works and grey skies. Oh February. Oh England. What I wouldn't give to be padding through the warm sands of a beach somewhere else, somewhere hot - somewhere I can splosh in and out of the water all day, drying lazily in the sun.

FIFA 20 to get officially-licensed River Plate and Boca Juniors early March

The tournament starts in-game on 3rd March via a free content update on the PC, PlayStation 4 and Xbox One versions of the game that weighs in at 4.8GB on PS4 and 5.5GB on Xbox One. There's no word on the update coming to the Switch version, so it looks like players on Nintendo's console will miss out once again.

After the update, FIFA 20 will have a new Libertadores Tournament Mode, which lets you take the likes of River Plate, Boca Juniors and Flamengo from the Group Stage to the Final.

New Warhammer 40K aerial combat game gives Orks a starring role

4 years 2 months ago

I know there are a lot of Warhammer 40,000 video games covering a lot of genres, but I never thought I'd see a Warhammer 40,000 aerial combat video game - all about Orks.

Warhammer 40,000: Dakka Squadron is due out on PC and consoles during the fourth quarter of 2020, and is described as a "fast-paced, aerial shooter where the player is an Ork Flyboy, taking to the skies to do what Orks do best - fight!".

You start off as a lowly Flyboy and conquer worlds as you work your way up to the position of Warboss. We're promised multiple planets, a 20+ mission campaign, a "grim humour" tone and various techniques, such as dog fighting, dive bombing and carpet bombing to master. "All of the player actions revolve around fighting," reads the official blurb. "Building and crafting is for the grots."

Rust makes Call of Duty: Modern Warfare the game I wanted at launch

4 years 2 months ago

Call of Duty: Modern Warfare recently released its second season, and I'm having a blast with it mainly because of the addition of Rust.

Modern Warfare's impactful gunplay and 60fps performance combine to create one of the best-feeling shooters in all of video games. But at launch I felt it was badly let down by its maps, and after a few weeks I stopped playing.

The arrival of Rust convinced me to jump back in. Such is the draw of this most wonderful of Call of Duty maps that I soldiered through season two's huge 60GB update (seriously, the updates for this game are ridiculous). Modern Warfare's Rust is a faithful recreation of the Modern Warfare 2 map of the same name, a ring-fenced oil rig in a small, square desert space that makes for fast-paced, close quarters action.

The Double-A Team: The Saboteur's shameless Paris sojourn offered up cabaret and carnage

Déjà vu. It happened when I was browsing a clothing catalogue in one of Red Dead Redemption 2's general stores. Among the abundance of cowboy hats, a lone flat cap. After equipping that careworn burgundy outlier, a decade melted away. I was no longer crotchety desperado Arthur Morgan. Instead I had resurrected Sean Devlin, gutsy Irish racing daredevil, two-fisted scourge of jackbooted bullies and indefatigable liberator of occupied Paris. A memory rose, unbidden, of wild nights in the City of Light, incinerating Nazi zeppelins while yelling: "My toothless old gran's tougher than you!"

Space Engineers' long-awaited Xbox One edition finally arrives in April

4 years 2 months ago

Developer Keen Software House's construction-focussed sandbox game Space Engineers is finally making its way to Xbox One on 15th April.

Space Engineers, which Keen describes as a "sandbox game about engineering, construction, exploration and survival in space and on planets", launched in its version 1.0 guise last February on PC, having been in Steam early access for almost five and a half years.

It's an absurdly ambitious game, enabling players (either working solo, co-operatively, or competitively in survival or creative modes) to build everything from planet-bound outposts to space stations and ships, piloting the latter among the stars to explore ever-further.

HTC unveils three new versions of its Vive Cosmos VR headset

4 years 2 months ago

Half-Life: Alyx is just over a month away, and those looking to step into the heady world of VR gaming have a new range of options to consider courtesy of HTC, which has just unveiled three new iterations of its Vive Cosmos headset.

The original Vive Cosmos launched at the tail-end of last year, offering a high-end PC-based VR experience that, in terms of price at least, occupied the middle ground between Oculus' £399 Rift S and Valve's maxed-out £919 Index, coming in at £699.

Vive Cosmos' three new variations - the Elite, XR, and Play - all have the same 90Hz 2,880 x 1,700 LCD display as the original model, but each utilises its own (removable) faceplate, providing support for a range of different features.

PUBG will finally let PS4 and Xbox One players party up together

4 years 2 months ago

Console wars are so last decade: everyone knows it's all about cross-play nowadays, and PUBG's latest console update is bringing everyone together by letting PS4 and Xbox One players party up. As for PC players - looks like you're still on your own, sorry.

After introducing limited cross-console play back in October, PUBG's 6.2 update finishes the job by allowing PS4 and Xbox One players to squad up in a single party. Until this point console users could play in the same matches, but not join a squad together - which is ultimately the feature everyone actually wants cross-play for.

Those wanting to bridge the console gap need only search for their buddy's Xbox Live Gamer Tag or PSN Name in PUBG's friends list. The update is already live on public test servers, so you can jump in with your friends right away.

Animal Crossing: New Horizons' save transfer option isn't getting any less confusing

4 years 2 months ago

During a Q&A section in today's Animal Crossing Direct, Nintendo again attempted to clear up the confusion surrounding your inability to transfer the game's save files from one Switch to another.

In short, you still can't. As in other Animal Crossing games, individual consoles host a single, shared settlement - a place which contains the houses of all local players. Likely because of this, New Horizons is one of several Switch games which do not support the Switch Online subscription's Cloud Backup option.

But what about if you upgrade your Switch to a shiny new model? What if your Switch is stolen and needs to be replaced?

Animal Crossing: New Horizons is a much more structured take on the series

4 years 2 months ago

I think it was Sam Beckett - the playwright, not the body-hopping scientist - who once said you can learn just as much about a city from your first day there as you can your first three months. I'm not sure how much you can say about an all-new Animal Crossing from just an hour spent in its company - these are games for life - but between that and everything from today's Direct I can certainly try. This is a gentle upgrade for Nintendo's life-sim series, but one that brings more structure to your life while streamlining many other elements.

You start at a check-in for Nook Inc's travel company - that company logo deliciously using Nintendo's own logotype - with Timmy and Tommy Nook manning the desk as you set out on your package holiday. There you're presented with the question - hypothetical, it must be said - of, if limited to the essentials, you'd rather have food, a lamp or something to kill time with, before you're presented with more material matters such as choosing whether you want to play in the northern hemisphere or southern hemisphere - which determines what seasons bring what weather - and the initial layout of your island.

The options when it comes to your own avatar are still fairly limited, and while features are now no longer locked to gender it seems the bulk of the customisation will come later in the game. Having picked an avatar you're then off to the island itself, with two other villagers in tow (this seems to be randomly generated - in my particular session I was paired up with Mira, a superhero rabbit, and Biff, a bodybuilding hippo).

Animal Crossing: New Horizons introduces town terraforming

4 years 2 months ago

Today's Nintendo Direct has revealed that terraforming is coming to Animal Crossing for the first time, with players able to carry out construction work such as paving paths and modifying cliffs and rivers.

It's one of several new features coming to the Nintendo Switch title, due on 20th March. Soon after launch, a new feature in the Nintendo Switch Online app will appear allowing New Horizons functionality. Called NookLink, it's where you can engage in voice chat or import designs from the 3DS' New Leaf and Happy Home Designer by scanning in QR codes. Customisation is also much deeper this time out, with cues being taken from Happy Home Designer as player's own designs can be applied to furniture.

That'll be part of several free updates coming to New Horizon, with the first coming on launch day that will enable Bunny Day in April - one of a number of planned in-game events coming to the new Animal Crossing.

Call of Duty: Modern Warfare fixes one of its most annoying exploits

4 years 2 months ago

Friend or foe? That was the dilemma facing Modern Warfare players last week thanks to an exploit which allowed players to change the colour of clan tags to a barely-visible black, enemy red, or even "friendly" blue colour. This meant a supposed teammate could turn around to shoot you mid-match, which was a little game-breaking, to say the least. Just take a peep at the video evidence below.

In a reply to the Reddit post highlighting the issue, Infinity Ward production director Paul Haile explained that "colorised names is not intended to be something players can do", and promised Infinity Ward would fix the problem. In yesterday's patch, a fix for regiment tags was rolled out, and by all accounts it's now impossible to change your clan tag's colour.

But we're not quite out of the woods yet, as some players have reported the number three is now appearing before their tag names, with some having their entire tag replaced by "3 3". Whoops.

Wild West tactical stealth sequel Desperados 3 now due this summer

4 years 2 months ago

It's been quite some time since we last heard news of Wild West tactical stealth sequel Desperados 3, with it even managing to sail passed its original 2019 release window without a peep. The silence is now broken, however, and publisher THQ Nordic has confirmed that Desperados 3 will now come to PC and consoles sometime this summer.

Desperados started back in 2001, offering a cowboy-themed slab of squad-based real-time tactical action that played similarly to the much-loved Commandos series. Desperados 3 (actually a prequel to the original game) arrives well over a decade after Desperados 2: Cooper's Revenge, and is being handled by Mimimi Games - the developer behind 2016's hugely enjoyable, and mechanically similar, Shadow Tactics: Blades of the Shogun.

When we last heard from Desperados 3 in August 2019, it was to introduce another of the game's playable characters - voodoo practitioner Isabelle Moreau - and today's updated release window news is accompanied by a similar reveal.

Switch's Witcher 3 patch 3.6 is an excellent upgrade to a superb game

4 years 2 months ago

When we reviewed the Witcher 3's Switch port late last year it was a cause for celebration. Cramming the entire adventure onto a cartridge was a real technical feat, the graphical nips and tucks were appropriate to the platform and the fact is played at all was something of a miracle. That said, there were still some key aspects missing we would have loved to have seen included in the port and what we really wanted to see was the ability to port saves between PC and Switch - a feature of Divinity Original Sin 2 that played out beautifully on the Nintendo hybrid. The good news is that patch 3.6 for Switch adds this must-have feature - and a whole lot more.

In addition to the cross-save support, performance optimisations and additional graphics options are implemented, while touch controls make the cut - mainly for menu navigation. However, the big breakthrough is indeed the cross-save option and it works pretty much exactly as you'd imagine. You get a choice of Steam and GOG stores on the main menu and from there, you sign into your account of choice through the Switch browser, where you can select which saves to download. It's worth stressing you must own all DLCs and extras installed on PC for it to work properly but this is the only real catch. Otherwise it's seamless and operates exactly as it should.

Sea of Thieves' latest update adds a cursed chest so angry it'll set your boat on fire

4 years 2 months ago

It's middle-month, and so time for another Sea of Thieves updates, with February's offering arriving in the form of Chests of Rage - which, as you'll already know if you read the headline, includes a cursed chest so positively apoplectic, it can set your ship on fire.

Perhaps surprisingly, the Chest of Rage is the first new cursed chest to be added to Sea of Thieves' since the piratical multiplayer adventure launched just shy of two years ago. It's a doozy though, burning hotter and hotter once hauled onboard a ship until it's mad enough to release a fiery shockwave, setting both ship and crew alight.

Attentive pirates can keep it cool by slopping it with water, but, intriguingly, the shockwave can be equally damaging to non-crew players, other ships, and skeletons. As such, it has strategic potential as a weapon in the right hands - particularly as it's possible to trigger the chest's shockwave faster, and sort-of on-demand, by attacking it.

Call of Duty: Modern Warfare adds the 1v1 Rust playlist we all craved

4 years 2 months ago

Ah yes, it's time for the return of an ancient meme from the days when Call of Duty players would throw down the gauntlet of "1v1 me bro" to anyone who challenged their gaming credentials. Partly ironic, partly an excuse to humiliate your friend with a 360 no-scope on Rust.

After a remake of Modern Warfare 2's Rust was introduced earlier this month, players immediately began to wonder when they'd be able to duel it out on the iconic map in the new Modern Warfare. After a tense few days of waiting (and some heavy hints from Infinity Ward), it looks like that time is now, as the latest playlist update has added 1v1 for Rust. It appears to have made the community rather happy.

The reason why this meme was attached to Rust specifically, according to collective internet wisdom, is because of Rust's size: as such a compact map, it made it far easier for duelling friends to find each other in 1v1 matches with sniper rifles. Nowadays it's mainly a parody phrase - although I'm tempted to start using it to challenge people around the office.

I don't know anything about Captain Tsubasa, but just kicking a ball in his new game looks awesome

4 years 2 months ago

I don't know anything about Captain Tsubasa, but I am going to play his new video game because every kick of the ball looks like a Dragon Ball fight and I can't wait to give it a try.

My (very) basic research tells me Captain Tsubasa is a manga from the '80s that was a massive hit in Japan. There's an anime, too - and it's still going. It's all about the title character, a school kid who dreams of playing for Japan at the World Cup.

Today, publisher Bandai Namco released a video showcasing the story mode for Captain Tsubasa: Rise Of New Champions. I'm not entirely sure what's going on, but I'm kicking every ball right with the players.

Biomutant confirms it's still alive and kicking

The reason for the lack of a set release date, Experiment 101 continued, is simply because the studio doesn't yet feel ready to announce it.

Upgrade your PS4 or Xbox One with a massive 5TB external drive for £100

4 years 2 months ago

With even the biggest Xbox and PS4 consoles offering only 1TB of built-in storage, and many editions offering far less, picking up an external hard drive can be a cheap way to keep all of your games installed and updated. One great option for this is the WD P10 Game Drive, which is on special offer today at Amazon. Right now, you can pick up this well-reviewed 5TB drive for £100, which is £25 less than its usual price and the cheapest we've ever seen this drive.

With 5TB of space on tap, you'll have enough space to keep around 125 modern AAA games installed simultaneously, if you assume a figure of around 36GB for each title.

There are plenty of external drives on the market, but the P10 is definitely worth a look considering that it's very competitive on price - the cheapest we normally see generic 5TB external drives is around £95 - and the P10 offers a few unique features that make it ideal for storing your game installs.

Looks like The Witcher 3 on Switch is getting PC cross-save

UPDATE 19/02/20: It's disappointing news for console players, as while cross-save between Switch and PC is now official, CD Projekt Red has said the feature will not be brought to PlayStation 4 or Xbox One. In the near future, at least.

The reason for this is because the option was "designed for the Switch version specifically, together with Saber Interactive - the team which was closely cooperating with us on the Switch port," CD Projekt told USgamer. "There are no plans regarding similar functionality in the other versions of The Witcher 3."

Aard luck.

Next in No Man's Sky: an organic spaceship you can grow from an egg

4 years 2 months ago

I'm really not sure what I was expecting from No Man's Sky's next update after Hello Games surprise-released a music and audio tool at the end of last year, but I'm almost one hundred percent certain it wasn't an organic spaceship you can grow from an egg. And yet here we are, with the Living Ship update due out today on Xbox One, PS4, and PC.

No Man's Sky's fascinating new mode of transport - a somewhat unnerving blend of insect and tentacular deep sea monstrosity - can be grown from Void Eggs, a process initially requiring players to complete the new Starbirth mission sequence that begins at the Space Anomaly.

Hello Games notes that Living Ships come with their own unique range of organic technologies, and that players can hatch and evolve procedural upgrades in order to grow their own custom ships. Furthermore, multiple ships can be hatched from additional eggs.
