Does Grand Theft Auto 6 deliver the generational leap we were hoping for?

5 months 1 week ago

The first Grand Theft Auto 6 trailer has arrived - a little ahead of schedule - and despite its minuscule run-time, it's an important piece of media. Not only is this our first look at what's likely to be the biggest game of the generation, it's also our first indication of how Rockstar has innovated its technology for the latest PlayStation and Xbox hardware. It's doubly significant bearing in mind that the only GTA game of the PS4 and Xbox One era was an enhanced version of a title originally built for Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3. In essence, we're looking at a technological leap that encompasses two console generations - and even with the meagre amount of material we have to look at, it's already looking highly promising.

First of all, as always with trailers - particularly debut trailers - we have to examine the plausibility of what we're seeing in a world where even 'in-engine' footage can look a generation apart from the final game. Is this actually real-time footage from the game engine itself running on target hardware? Is this level of quality attainable by today's hardware. The good news is that based on what we're seeing here, we're inclined to believe this is representative of the actual game.

First of all, pixel-peeping apart, there's Rockstar's track record on this kind of thing. Going back to its accompanying media for Grand Theft Auto 5 and Red Dead Redemption 2, what we saw may have benefited from dramatic, cinematic camera angles, but there were enough real-time rendering artefacts to confirm that this was indeed the actual game running at its core. It's the same with Grand Theft Auto 6. Rockstar put out an ultra HD trailer and could have run it from PC with all settings dialled up and at full, native 4K resolution. It did not do that.

Nexus Mods removes anti-gay Baldur's Gate 3 mod

5 months 1 week ago

Nexus Mods has removed a mod which changed the gender of a character in a same-sex relationship in Baldur's Gate 3 and banned the account which uploaded it.

The mod, called Ser Aylin (no longer available on Nexus Mods but a version has been archived on Wayback Machine), targets Dame Aylin and turns her into a "fully immersive male version" of herself by changing her model, using AI to alter the voice performance of actor Helen Keeley, and changing NPC dialogue lines.

Following Ser Aylin's upload by user Yedlike to Nexus Mods on 3rd December, Baldur's Gate 3 fans protested against the mod and asked others to not support it, noting it's part of a larger mod pack called No Alphabets. On 4th December, Nexus banned Yedlike for violating its community rules.

Lego Fortnite Reveal Trailer December 7 Launch Adventure Survival Crafting Epic Games

Alongside the launch of Fortnite Chapter 5: Season 1, Epic Games revealed Lego Fortnite, a new experience that takes the familiarity of Fortnite and mashes it together with Lego for a new survival adventure experience. Today, Epic Games and Lego released a cinematic trailer for Lego Fortnite that reveals crafting, combat, multiplayer team-ups, a massive world to explore, and more.

The trailer begins with a standard Fortnite character – Brite Bomber – running into a reality-shifting rift that transports her to a Lego-fied world. There are Lego sheep, castle-like structures, rolling hills and plains, and, unfortunately for this character, a storm. She runs into the castle to discover a crafting bench of sorts where she crafts an axe, and that's where her survival adventure begins.

What's better: Ricochet attacks, or blue shadows on dodges and dashes?

5 months 1 week ago

Last time, you decided that Diablo's Tristram theme is better than chain explosions. I hadn't peeked at the votes while voting was still underway so I'm a little surprised by the outcome, given how much of the discussion favoured explosive practicality over emotive plucking. This week, I ask you to pick between two different types of cool missing. What's better: ricochet attacks, or blue shadows on dodges and dashes?

Final Fantasy XIV Plates Can Cost Over $400

5 months 1 week ago

Final Fantasy XIV plates Bahamut header

Square Enix announced that it will collaborate with Tsutaya (the pottery brand, not the rental stores) on maki-e plates to commemorate the tenth anniversary of Final Fantasy XIV. The plates will be available to pre-order from December 12, 2023 until January 15, 2024.

Wajima-nuri is a type of Japanese lacquerware that differentiates itself from other lacquerware with the usage of multiple layers of urushi in the undercoat. Though the precise details of when this particular style of lacquerware came about, historians believe that the current version of it came about during the early Edo period. The reason why Square Enix and Tsutaya will work together to release wajima-nuri plates is to try and interest younger people in the ancient art.

There will be two wajima-nuri plates available for the Final Fantasy XIV collaboration. The first one focuses on Bahamut and the second references Meteion. The Bahamut plate costs 66,550 JPY ($451.75) and the Meteion plate costs 40,700 JPY ($276.30). Another Bahamut plate will be on display at the Final Fantasy XIV fan festival in 2024.

That's right, it's time to get out of your bedroom and touch some virtual grass.

Shadow Gambit's pair of expansions are a fitting farewell for Mimimi's tactical masterpiece

5 months 1 week ago

Pour one out for Mimimi Games today, readers. Despite announcing they were shutting up shop following the release of this year's fantastic Shadow Gambit: The Cursed Crew, today marks the grand finale for their stealth strategy masterpiece in the form of a new free Treasure Hunt update, and the release of their two paid expansions. Each brings a brand-new pirate to The Red Marley's undead crew, as well as their own half-dozen story missions to play through spread across islands old and new, and once you've begun each of their respective questlines, they're readily available to play in any of the game's regular plunderings, too.

Mimimi have kept the identity of these pirates a secret until now, but after playing both DLCs for a big chunk of the last week, I'm confident in saying this is exactly the swansong Shadow Gambit deserves - with one of the expansions in particular bringing a poignant touch of coming full circle on Mimimi's work as a studio. Naturally, spoilers circle these waters like hungry sharks, but if you're resigned to such a fate, let's dive in below.

I hope GTA 6's Vice City embraces the mundane

5 months 1 week ago

Rockstar has released a 90-second GTA 6 trailer! Wowee! No seriously, ignoring my cynicism for a second, it does look really impressive. As I mentioned in our RPS reacts piece, I'm genuinely excited by the prospect of a renewed Vice City and you bet I'll be there for the inevitable five-minute narrated trailer that begins with a person saying, "Welcome to Vice City".

There's no doubt Vice City is going to be dense and chaotic, going by all the twerking and the social media parodies of real life Florida folks. But really, I do hope that Rockstar doesn't just reserve next-gen's horsepower for wildness. I want some peace, some quiet, some innocuous suburbs to laze around in. That would be nice.

Take note, Metroid likers, Ultros is one trip you won't want to miss in 2024

5 months 1 week ago

Ultros is one of those games you can't help but pay attention to. Back when it was first revealed in May at Sony's pre-notE3 PlayStation Showcase, its colourful, fever dream visuals from Hotline Miami artist El Huervo instantly made it stand out among all the drab multiplayer shooters jostling for attention. Then, between talk of it being set inside a cosmic uterus known as The Sarcophagus and having to use seeds and plants over successive runs to alter the shape of the map to your whim, it only became more intriguing. Now, after playing almost two hours of this Metroid-y roguelite for myself, there's still a lot about it to take in and digest, but holy moly what a thing to behold at the same time. This is surely going to be one to watch for Metroidvania likers when it comes out on February 13th next year, because cor, this is looking really quite good, folks.

Arcade Paradise VR Heading to Meta Quest

Nosebleed Interactive and Wired Productions announced its laundromat and arcade management simulator Arcade Paradise is getting a VR version for Meta Quest headsets. It is “coming soon” to the systems, and the product page is already live.

The premise in Arcade Paradise is that players are tasked with working at a laundromat. You wash and dry people’s clothing for them, while also tending to the place. However, in the back room you can set up an arcade. Profits from the arcade cabinets and laundry can be reinvested back into the business, allowing you access to new cabinets. There are 35 cabinets available to “buy” in-game, though DLC expanded the range of the original release, and these are playable minigames inspired by actual arcade games or other titles in various ways.

Here's the first trailer for the VR version of the game. It offers an idea of what to expect from the new approach to the title.

Genshin Impact Artifacts and Expeditions Quality of Life Changes Coming in 4.3

HoYoVerse revealed that the 4.3 update for Genshin Impact will make two requested Artifacts and Expeditions quality of life changes. These will make it easier to sort or finish tasks.

When it comes to the Genshin Impact Artifacts, there will be new filtering and locking options. For example, you can sort by which set, then choose to search by lock state, level status, and if it is equipped. It will be easier to sort by set when in the equipping screen. It will also be possible to search and lock based on the main affix and minor affixes, so you could make sure ones that focus on attack or critical rates could be locked.

As for the Genshin Impact Expeditions, there will be two new buttons when you visit Katheryne at an Adventurers’ Guild location. If everyone is dispatched, you can select the Claim All button to claim all of the items when these assignments are done and call folks back. Once you do, there will be a Dispatch Again button. Pressing that will send everyone out on the exact same Expeditions again.

Destiny 2 staff reportedly worried about Bungie's future

5 months 1 week ago

Employees at Destiny 2 developer Bungie have said they feel anxious about their current status at the company, following layoffs earlier this year.

As you may recall, layoffs were first reported at the developer in October. At this time, studio CEO Pete Parsons publicly commented on the cuts, calling it "a sad day". Around 100 employees were said to be affected.

Now, in a new report by IGN, many remaining at the company have said the studio is implementing a variety of other cost-cutting measures across the board, in order to remain an independent subsidiary within Sony (which acquired the developer in 2022). There is concern among staff that Bungie may lose its independence within Sony should Destiny 2 fail to meet financial goals.

Persona 3 Reload Yukari Battle Outfit Emphasizes Her Role as an Archer

Persona 3 Reload Yukari Battle Outfit Emphasizes Her Role as an Archer

Atlus shared new insights from Persona 3 Reload character designer Azusa Shimada about the new battle outfit for Yukari. Her new outfit is designed to reinforce the idea of Yukari being both a fashionable person and a cool fighter.

The A-line silhouette of her new jacket is intended to reinforce her aesthetic as an archer, explained Azusa. Furthermore, she wears her jacket in a casual manner, and pairs it with widely visible neck and chest accessories to emphasize the idea that she’s a fashion-conscious person.

Azusa also said that he wanted to make her combat equipment, bow, and quiver look heavy. The reasoning behind this is so that she would convey the feeling of being a cool fighter, as much as she is cute and fashionable. In a similar fashion, Yukari’s jacket is designed to flutter and move when she casts Wind elemental spells.

You can take a better look at the new Persona 3 Reload combat outfit for Yukari, and original Japanese commentary on it here:

Review: Lego Bricktales VR Is the Coziest Quest Game

Review- Lego Bricktales VR Is the Coziest Quest Game a

The VR version of Lego Bricktales is a perfect example of a game working better on a new platform than its original one. While I enjoyed playing it on a PS5, getting to actually zoom in on dioramas and build on virtual tables in my lap or on my coffee table is far more intuitive and fun.

We’re an observer in Lego Bricktales VR. We watch from above as a young individual reunites with his grandfather to help restore a dilapidated amusement park. How? They work alongside a robot named Rusty that was rehabbed by aliens and go through portals to other areas to assist people in need. In so doing, they earn the Happiness Crystals necessary to clean up the place, get the mayor off Grandpa’s back, and potentially make even more people happy.
