Someone Turned Starfield’s Lockpicking Into Its Own Game

7 months 3 weeks ago

Released earlier this month, Starfield is Bethesda’s long-in-development and much-hyped open-world space RPG. And while the hundreds of planets and spaceship building are cool and all, I particularly enjoy Starfield’s fantastic lockpicking minigame. Apparently I’m not alone, because someone out there has taken the…

Revisiting Konami’s Messy, Misguided Saw Games On The Eve Of Saw X

7 months 3 weeks ago

I’m seeing Saw X tonight. The ever-wearier death game horror movie franchise has been toying with soft reboots since 2017’s Jigsaw and 2021’s Chris Rock-led Spiral, but neither really got the series back off the ground. Saw X is a prequel injected between the 2004 original and its 2005 sequel, and marks the first time…

Counter-Strike 2 probably shouldn't be able to dine out on CS:GO's positive reviews

7 months 3 weeks ago

At the time of writing, Counter-Strike 2 has 7.5 million reviews on Steam, 88% of which are positive. That's pretty good going for a game that released less than 24 hours ago.

Except, of course, that the vast majority of those reviews are for Counter-Strike: Global Offensive, a game that is no longer playable. If you filter the reviews to just yesterday and today, you'll find that there have been 3450 of them, just 59% of which are positive, which would give Counter-Strike 2 a rating of "Mixed".

Nearly a year on, Minecraft Dungeons' November 2022 update confirmed as its last

7 months 3 weeks ago

Five years after its initial unveiling, developer Mojang has confirmed development on Minecraft Dungeons has reached its end, and that the game's 1.17 update - which released ten months ago, back in November 2022 - will be its last.

Minecraft Dungeons, a collaboration between Mojang and developer Double Eleven, was well-received when it launched in May 2020 - Eurogamer's Tom Phillips called it a "strong extension to the franchise, and by far the most promising Minecraft spin-off released to date" at the time.

By the time February 2021 rolled around, Minecraft Dungeons had amassed over 10m players, and was popular enough that a second season pass of DLC content was announced after its first came to and end. Mojang then announced it would introduce a live-service style seasonal model - complete with battle pass - as 2021 drew to a close.

A New Elder Scrolls Mobile Game Just Dropped, and It Looks a Lot Like Fallout Shelter

7 months 3 weeks ago

Pretty much out of nowhere, a new Elder Scrolls mobile game just dropped, and it’s basically Fallout Shelter, Skyrim-style.

The Elder Scrolls: Castles appeared with little fanfare on Google Play today. It’s listed as early access on the Google Play page, but it’s currently free to download and play on Android devices. Per the Google Play listing, Castles is “a new mobile game that puts you in control of your very own castle and dynasty. Oversee your subjects as the years come and go, families grow, and new rulers take the throne.”

Each day in real life spans an entire year in The Elder Scrolls: Castles, the listing says, and over the time, players train subjects, “name heirs, and maintain order to help your kingdom flourish.” The Elders Scrolls: Castles will also have quests that include “classic Elder Scrolls foes to collect valuable items and keep your kingdom growing.” You can see more in the slideshow below.

As mentioned, it all sounds very similar to Fallout Shelter, another Bethesda construction and time management sim initially released for iOS in 2015 that had players overseeing a Vault and the Dwellers in it. Fallout Shelter found enough success to be brought to Android later in 2015, then PC in 2016, Xbox One in 2017, and Nintendo Switch and PlayStation 4 in 2018.

Sony Reveals 6 New Games Coming to PS VR2

7 months 3 weeks ago

Earlier today, Sony announced a handful of games on the way to the PlayStation VR2.

Posting these announcements on both the PlayStation Blog and the social media platform X (formerly Twitter), Sony shared new details on six games that will be playable on its headset. With release dates varying from next month to next year, here's a roundup of the six VR games Sony highlighted that are coming to PS VR2 soon.

Among Us

PlayStation's first announcement was that Among US VR will arrive on PS VR2. Though no release date was announced, the news is great for PS VR2 fans, as it was released on Meta Quest and Steam VR headsets nearly a year ago; it seemed only a matter of time before Schell Games released a PS VR port.

Journey to Foundation

Inspired by the Foundation novel series by the late American author Isaac Asimov, Journey to Foundation is an upcoming VR sci-fi RPG where players will explore uncharted regions of outer space. Players assume the role of an agent for a shadowy organization and become involved in a battle for "control of all humanity."

The game was actually revealed in February, but today's announcement revealed that Journey to Foundation arrives on PS VR2 (plus Meta Quest) on Oct. 26.

Edifier's excellent R1700BTs speakers are down to $159.99 at Amazon US thanks to a $40 off coupon

7 months 3 weeks ago

Beijing-based audio brand Edifier makes some of the best value speakers in the business, often offering significantly better performance, functionality and aesthetics than more well-known Western brands. I've reviewed a half-dozen of their speakers over the years, and each one has been impressive.

I'm currently recommending Edifier's R2000DB and S3000PRO speakers over at Eurogamer, but today an even more affordable model is on sale at Amazon US: the R1700BTs. These 2.0 bookshelf speakers normally go for $199, but today you can apply a $40 coupon on the product page to bring these speakers down to... $159, if my maths are correct. That's a solid deal for speakers that come with a litany of positive critic and user reviews.

Elder Scrolls just got a Fallout Shelter-style mobile game on Google Play

7 months 3 weeks ago

Bethesda's next fully fledged Elder Scrolls game might still be five-plus years away from release, but if you're truly suffering from series withdrawal symptoms, the company has just unceremoniously shoved a Fallout Shelter-style Elder Scrolls game onto Google Play.

As spotted by IGN, The Elder Scrolls: Castles is now available to download, tasking players with managing their own, yes, castle through a steady process of room-by-room expansion, while also dealing with the whims of their kingdom - by deciding how to respond to their subjects' requests, Reigns-style - at the same time.

Oh, and there's a questing element too, in which players will need to create heroes, kit them out with gear, and send them into battle against "classic Elder Scrolls foes" in order to collect resources that'll come in hand elsewhere.

Xbox Is Having its Best Stretch of Game Releases Since Fall 2007

7 months 3 weeks ago

Just because I know that headline will have some of you primed to start typing in the Comments section, know that this column isn’t about Xbox exclusives. Those, as we all know by now, are still dripping out of the Xbox Game Studios spigot rather than flowing. But the back-pressure is rising, and I’m sure I’ll write more about what’s next in a future column. For today, I want to focus simply on games being released for the Xbox Series X and S right now, this Fall, whether they’re exclusive or not. Most of them aren’t, certainly, but it doesn’t make the following statement any less true: we are in the single biggest 90-day stretch of game releases since Xbox 360’s historic Fall 2007.

That legendary run, culminating in the second anniversary of the Xbox 360 on November 22, included an insane smorgasbord of games that were exclusives: Halo 3, BioShock, Mass Effect, The Orange Box, and Project Gotham Racing 4. Throw in the multiplatform releases of Rock Band, Assassin’s Creed, and Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare and, quite honestly, I’m not sure if we’ll ever top that. But Fall 2023, aka Right Now, is sure doing its damndest to try! Take a look at what’s come out recently and what’s still on the way in the next couple of months:

Midautumn builds upon Hades to explore an Asian diaspora experience

7 months 2 weeks ago

Hello! Since today sees the celebration of 2023's Mid-Autumn Festival, we decided to take another look at Midautumn, which Liv wrote about beautifully back in June. Enjoy!

Roguelikes have a hell of a reputation: unforgiving, inscrutable, and not for the faint of heart. After all, the genre is a lineage of games that emerged from Rogue, an ASCII game known for being notoriously challenging. But the genre's penchant for loops and repetition - which stems from its games' deadly combination of brutal combat, limited health and permadeath—also makes it a rather unorthodox medium for developers looking to deliver a narrative-driven experience. This is a mould that the roguelike Hades has already broken with its atypical accessibility and multi-layered storytelling, and it's this particular formula that Midautumn is inspired by. To its team of developers, Hades has paved the way for the game to impart a story about an Asian diaspora community, faced with the threat of gentrification.

"We were very excited by the idea of roguelikes in telling stories, in types of stories that are harder to tell," says creator Sherveen Uduwana. "What [Hades] opened up for us was, suddenly there are a lot more people that are familiar with some of these conventions and mechanics of how you tell stories in roguelikes, so it's doing some heavy lifting for us in being able to tell a less well-tread story in games."

Knights of the Old Republic Remake is slowly getting expunged from the internet

7 months 2 weeks ago

UDPDATE 5.45pm: Following the discovery that trailers for the Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic remake were being systematically scrubbed from the internet, Sony has blamed a music licensing issue, describing the steps as "normal".

"As part of normal business, we delist assets with licensed music when the licenses expire," a Sony spokesperson said in a statement provided to Eurogamer. The only music featured in the Knights of the Old Republic Remake trailer was the Disney-owned main Star Wars themed, so that very much appears to be the culprit.

What we've been playing

If you fancy catching up on some of the older editions of What We've Been Playing, here's our archive.

I'm fascinated by the new story missions in Overwatch 2 because in them, I can so clearly see Blizzard's ambitions for a fully-fledged PvE game. Except, of course, that vision didn't pan out and so the work was salvaged and released as paid-for add-ons instead.

Farewell to Sony's Jim Ryan

7 months 2 weeks ago

This week on the Eurogamer Newscast, we bid farewell to PlayStation boss Jim Ryan, who has announced his departure from the company after almost three decades of service.

We look back at Ryan's tenure at the top of Sony's console business, which included the launch of PlayStation 5 and the acquisition of Bungie. Sony has seen huge sales successes, of course, but is this down to the company's continued direction or simply an open goal from the last console generation?

Announced just before we recorded this week's show, we also discuss the shock cancellation of Hyenas, the loot shooter from Sega's UK studio Creative Assembly that was being demoed to the public only last month. Such a last-minute scrubbing of a game launch is startling - we discuss why the decision may have been made.

Portable Xbox Series S Screen is Now Officially Licensed by Xbox

7 months 2 weeks ago

UPSpec Gaming has announced that its xScreen for Xbox Series S is now an official 'Designed for Xbox' licensed product. This means it has undergone rigorous testing and validation by the Xbox Quality Assurance (QA) team, providing additional reassurance to potential buyers of the portable screen.

We gave the xScreen a 7/10 in our review, stating: "UPspec’s xScreen is a fantastic portable monitor that makes the most compact ninth-generation console to date a lot more portable-friendly. Requiring just a single cable to power both the display and monitor, the xScreen is a good accessory for Series S owners who want to make their console portable or just be able to play when all the other screens in your household are occupied."

While the original price tag of $250 may still be seen as premium more than a year later, it's worth noting that the xScreen is presently available at a discounted rate of $209.99 on Amazon for those who are interested in acquiring this fully licensed portable screen.

The xScreen boasts an 11.6-inch 1080p foldable IPS display, available in a single white color variant. Its design is sleek and minimalist, featuring a foldable hinge that provides a laptop-like experience when connected to the Series S console. To connect the xScreen to the Xbox Series S, you'll need an HDMI cable and one of the USB-A ports located on the back of the console.

Ed Boon gets tongues wagging with Ghostface and Jigsaw tease for Mortal Kombat 1

Many have surmised this means these less than friendly faces will soon be making their way into Mortal Kombat 1 as part of the game's DLC. As one fan noted in the replies, "Jigsaw would be perfect with the new Saw coming out".

Game of the Week: The impossible becomes the possible in Cocoon

7 months 2 weeks ago

The week's Game of the Week was not a tough pick. Cocoon is astonishing stuff, and happily the most thrilling game I have played this year - quite a thing to say when the year's been as rich as 2023.

I reviewed the game yesterday, but I was very taken with Polygon's piece, by Grayson Morley. Morley writes this: "A late-game puzzle involves the creation of an impossibility. Something that seems to break the game’s rules, and yet doesn’t, under the ever-thickening logic of Cocoon." Firstly, yes, "ever-thickening" is lovely, suggesting that logic is some kind of homeostatic process, something like myelin bunching in the nervous system. Secondly, though, I read that and realised: I know the exact moment being discussed. In fact I will never forget it.

I love games and art in general that go from the possible to the impossible and remain comfortable with what they have done. In literature, there's a brilliant term for this, which I probably misunderstand and misuse, but anyway, here goes: it's called negative capability. As it was once explained to me, negative capability is an author or artist's ability to pursue truth and beauty past the point which they are logical. It's a pursuit of beauty into a realm that cannot fully be understood, but which must instead be appreciated on an emotional level. To put it another way, it's about how good you are at using words when you're in pursuit of the wordless.

Mortal Kombat 1 Developer Ed Boon Teases Fans With Ghostface and Jigsaw Image

7 months 2 weeks ago

Mortal Kombat 1 development chief Ed Boon is up to his old tricks again, teasing fans about potential upcoming DLC characters.

Boon tweeted an image showing a number of famous horror villains, including Freddy Krueger, Jason Voorhees, and Leatherface, all of whom have green ticks because they have appeared as a guest character in Mortal Kombat in the past.

It’s the villains who have a green question mark plonked on top who we’re most interested in, however. Michael Myers, Pinhead, Chucky, Jigsaw, and Ghostface are all teased here by Boon, and the Mortal Kombat community is responding as you’d expect.

Earlier this month, dataminers dug into Mortal Kombat 1 and found evidence pointing to potential unannounced DLC characters. While NetherRealm has already announced the characters set to appear in Kombat Pack 1 (check out IGN's Mortal Kombat 1 character guide for more), based on unearthed voice lines Kombat Pack 2 may include Jade, Cassie Cage, Kung Jin, Noob Saibot, Cyrax, and Ghostface from the Scream films. There’s even a suggestion the T-1000 from Terminator and Conan the Barbarian will appear in Mortal Kombat 1 at some point. Boon’s image shows Ghostface with a question mark, which tallies with the datamine.

Cyberpunk 2077 Lead Reveals How to Become a 'Warlock Netrunner' in Phantom Liberty

7 months 2 weeks ago

Cyberpunk 2077 director Gabe Amatangelo has revealed how to become what he believes is one of the most fun archetypes in Phantom Liberty: "a warlock netrunner."

Speaking to PC Gamer, Amatangelo said the combination of the monowire cyberware and quickhacking multiple enemies can essentially inflict a never-ending cycle of chaos if done well enough.

"There [are so many fun builds], but I'd say the netrunner, spreading hacks with the monowire from the Relic Tree," Amatangelo said when asked which build he recommended players try. "That one's so much fun, especially if you are able to work in the combos and the rhythm for refunding your memory and your cooldowns. When you do it in concert with the monowire, you get the bonuses from the spreads."

Players can quickhack enemies in Cyberpunk 2077 to cause all sorts of problems, from short circuits to malware infections and more, but doing so costs the player RAM or memory that needs to replenish. Amatangelo's warlock netrunner essentially overcomes that problem, however, by using a combination of skills to replenish that memory very quickly.

"Basically, the bonuses you get from combos happening, you set a debuff hack on one person, you spread it to a few, and then you do a follow-up hack on all of them — you get the bonuses and memory refunds from all of them," he continued.

Mojang Brings Minecraft Dungeons Development to an End After Hitting 25 Million Players

7 months 2 weeks ago

Mojang has ended development on Minecraft Dungeons three years after launch and after hitting an impressive 25 million players.

Minecraft Dungeons is a dungeon crawler spin-off that launched for Nintendo Switch, PlayStation 4, PC, and Xbox One in May 2020, and for Xbox Series X and S in February 2021. IGN’s Minecraft Dungeons review returned a 7/10. “Simple and fun to play, Minecraft Dungeons is a good entry-level dungeon crawler, but it doesn't dig too deep,” we said.

In a note to players, Mojang said Minecraft Dungeons “exceeded our wildest dreams”, but “every journey has an end”. Update 1.17, released November 2022, goes down as Minecraft Dungeons’ last, and now Mojang has moved on to new projects “that continue to explore experiences in the Minecraft universe”.

This means there are no new features or content updates planned for Minecraft Dungeons. “We do intend to continue bringing new experiences to the Minecraft universe and give our team the freedom to keep exploring the types of games they're passionate about — just as they did with Dungeons!” Mojang continued.

Despite this, Minecraft Dungeons remains online and playable. “There are still plenty of adventures to be had together with your friends; dungeons to spelunk, ancient hunts to conquer, and toppling a Tower whose layout will continue to rotate,” Mojang said.

Xbox Controllers Are Already Back on Sale in the UK Before Prime Day 2

7 months 2 weeks ago

Xbox controllers have once again gone back on sale in the UK, this time dropping to just £39.99 at most retailers. The sale comes only weeks before we see Amazon's Prime Day 2 (Prime Big Deal Days, October Prime Day) return on October 10-11.

Black Friday season will also soon be upon us, and we're also expecting to see similar discounts on Xbox controllers, games, and other accessories over the next couple of months. But, if you want to get in on the sales early (just in case we see your favourite colour sells out), then the deal is available here for all to check out.

What to Expect from Prime Day 2 and Black Friday?

Gaming console deals are usually some of the hottest sales of Black Friday, but you can also usually get some pretty great discounts on video games and accessories as well. These price cuts usually come in the form of popular games dropping under £30 or a BOGO sale.

The sales usually exclude the best new games of the year, but if you don't mind browsing top games of the past 5 years then you can usually find a really good deal. Some of the best Nintendo Switch games dropped under £30 last year, for example.
