Starfield Xbox Players Are Using Cross-Platform Saves to Gain Access to PC Console Commands

8 months 1 week ago

One of the best things about playing Starfield on PC is the access to console commands.

In Starfield, cheat codes are enabled via console commands, but they only work on the PC version of the game. These cheat codes let you do everything from spawning any item in the game to toggle god mode. Check out IGN’s Starfield console commands guide for a comprehensive rundown of how the cheats work.

Xbox Series X and S owners, however, do not have access to console commands. But players have discovered a workaround that, while limited, does let console players get in on some of the cheating action.

If you own Starfield on Xbox or Xbox Game Pass, you can download it on any PC for free via the Xbox App. Even if your PC is a potato (Starfield and potatoes is an actual thing), just run the game using the same Microsoft account so that your save files from Xbox are transferred across. Then get stuck in to the console commands.

Thanks to Microsoft’s cross-platform save system, the next time you run Starfield on Xbox, your modified save file from PC, along with its enabled cheats, carries over.

Players are using this trick to, for example, get around Starfield’s frustrating weight limit. You can also use commands like add more digipicks, medipacks, and credits on Xbox with this method.

Under The Waves' submarine 70s grief flat is nicer than my home

8 months 1 week ago

Oft' am I struck by the fact that video game homes belonging to characters in the depths of despair are nicer that all of the homes I've lived in myself. Granted, I'm a thirty-something in a country with a years-long housing crisis, so even the Baker House in Resident Evil 7 is of "I think I could just about afford that one day" status. But it comes to something when a 70s depresso-capsule at the bottom of the sea has more square footage and storage space than I do.

Under The Waves (which got patched today, and not before time because I've had one fatal error crash per play session since it came out last week so far) is about a deep sea diver called Stan, who is living and working at the bottom of a big wet metaphor for grief. You will know this because a) its Steam page says this up front, and b) it's not super subtle (this game is published by Quantic Dream). But, as newsman Edwin pointed out to me today, when was the last time the sea wasn't a metaphor for grief? It's never a metaphor for enjoying a nice raspberry ripple ice cream. And despite Stan making reference to "what [he's] been through" half an hour in, I think it does a great job with its chthonic sadness. You float about in your tiny little sub in a great misty darkness, listen to the extremely melancholy music, and you start thinking about sad stuff in your own life. But you get into Stan's capsule living area and you think "this guy has a carpet and a book nook, what the hell?"

Watch a robot parry a nuke in this Nier and Devil May Cry-influenced indie actioner

8 months 1 week ago

I like to think that I'm above the lure of Cool Violent Thing in Videogame these days, but when I see a lanky robot parry a nuclear shockwave with a katana as though swatting a wasp, I find myself Enthused.

The videogame in question is Pyrolith's V.A. Proxy, which I've had my eye on for a while, on account of it being inspired by Nier: Automata and Devil May Cry, with a landscape of megastructures and bruised and rusty art direction that calls to mind The Signal from Tölva. In this moody open world action game, you play one of three robots who awaken to find their memories gone, and promptly set out in search of their creator. It'd be an eye-catcher even without the atomic parry, which you can witness for yourself in the embedded clip below.

Starfield modders are trying to join up maps into complete planets, cue memories of Minecraft's Far Lands

8 months 1 week ago

Are Starfield's planets continuous spaces? Are they just collections of sealed-off maps that fake the presence of landmarks such as named cities beyond their invisible boundaries? I just don't even know any more, but Starfield mod creators are looking into it. One intrepid soul, Draspian, has tinkered with the code to disable said invisible boundaries, and in the process, revealed that planetary maps do, in fact, join together, though as you might be expecting, Starfield doesn't take kindly to being treated this way.

UPDATE 11/9/23: Konami has issued a statement on the potential return of Mason Greenwood to its eFootball game, and refused to rule out the possibility of the disgraced striker's return.

"We will take an appropriate action in consultation with licensors," a Konami spokesperson told Eurogamer, when asked whether Greenwood would be added back.

Last week, Football Manager developer Sports Interactive said it would return Greenwood to its game after the player's move to Spanish side Getafe. Eurogamer has separately contacted EA for word on Greenwood's status in this year's EA Sports FC24.

I went on a live-action date in Like A Dragon Gaiden

8 months 1 week ago

I stumbled upon the cabaret club by chance. I was given limited time to play Like A Dragon Gaiden and told to explore thoroughly. But I didn't expect to stumble upon this.

I emerge into a city on a boat, complete with replica Osaka Castle. It's a hedonistic theme park, a Japanese Las Vegas, filled with gambling parlours, women in bunny ears, and a giant clown. Everything is luminous.

I potter around for a bit, eager to find out what awaits me in each building. The Like A Dragon (or Yakuza) series is known for its mini-games: mini car racing, karaoke, club management. Many of these return for Gaiden, including the cabaret club.

Megan Fox announced as Mortal Kombat 1's blood-thirsty Nitara

8 months 1 week ago

Megan Fox is lending her voice and likeness to vampire Nitara in Mortal Kombat 1.

Last night, NetherRealm announced Nitara will return to the series as a playable character for the first time in almost 20 years. In a new video showcasing the blood-thirsty fighter, Fox said the character resonated with her, perhaps acknowledging her own penchant for a few drops of the red stuff.

Nitara is "evil but also good," Fox explained in the video, adding that she is "trying to save her people". Fox said she had a lot of fun bringing her talents to Mortal Kombat 1, calling the series a "staple" on the gaming landscape. "We did all grow up playing the game... it is one of the greatest video games of all time".

Detective Pikachu Returns: The First Hands-On Preview

8 months 1 week ago

Over five years since Detective Pikachu and his human partner Tim Goodman were first cracking cases on the streets of Ryme City, the duo is back in Detective Pikachu Returns to solve the big cliffhanger leftover from the 2018 original: Where is Tim's father and Detective Pikachu's old partner, Harry Goodman?

I played the first Detective Pikachu over five years ago when it launched on 3DS, and I'm admittedly a little fuzzy on all of the twists and turns that happened over its 12-hour runtime. The developers at Creatures appear to be well-aware of the long gap between the original Detective Pikachu and Returns as well, as my preview of the game got started with Detective Pikachu pensively recapping the events of the original. But it seems like the only important detail carrying over from the first game is the mystery surrounding Tim's father. Once you're caught up on that, it appears even players who didn't experience Detective Pikachu can jump straight into Returns.

The 30-minute demo I played dropped Tim and Pikachu into the middle of a mystery in Ryme City, where humans and Pokémon live side-by-side. I've solved enough mysteries in my time to know you should always suspect the butler, but in this section of the game, Tim and Detective Pikachu are helping a butler who was injured during a robbery at the Denis Mansion. Talk about flipping a mystery convention on its head.

Payday 3: The Final Preview

8 months 1 week ago

Payday 3 comes with a laundry list of decisions that players will have to answer quickly when walking into the next job. Mask off or on? Creep around corners and avoid armed confrontation or bust in guns blazing? Engage in a hostage negotiation to buy some time or power through as quickly as possible? After 10 years and more than 200 updates since the Payday gang infiltrated Washington, DC, and after acquiring a few new associates along the way, the crew is picking up where they left off and heading to the greater New York City metropolitan area for Payday 3 — even crossing the Hudson River for a sting in New Jersey. They may have learned a few more tricks of the trade, but it’s up to the player to utilize them effectively. And, more often than not, going in with the goal of pulling off a job under the radar ends in reluctantly busting out guns. One false move is all it takes to blow it.

As much as I wanted to take advantage of the stealth tactics introduced here, I usually ended up bungling it by taking too long to pick a lock or being caught by a security camera I didn’t spot. Much like a real-world heist (uh, not that I would know), all the minutiae must be carefully accounted for to pull off a job as smooth as a Danny Ocean plan. At least the Payday games haven’t exactly conditioned its players to take a gentle approach to robbery, so when things go south, my team was ready to mow down en`dless waves of NYPD for the biggest take we could manage.

Todd Howard Had a Fun Reply to a Silly Question About Starfield PC Optimisation

8 months 1 week ago

Starfield development chief Todd Howard had a fun response after an interviewer asked him why Bethesda hadn’t optimised Starfield for PC.

The Bloomberg interviewer set up the question by saying they’d asked their viewers for questions for Todd Howard, and a “big question from many” was: “why did you not optimise this game for PC?”

After a brief pause in which Howard looked a little nonplussed (Xbox boss Phil Spencer has a little laugh, too), an answer that cut to the heart of the issue: “We did. It’s running great. It is a next-gen PC game. We really do push the technology so you may need to upgrade your PC for this game. But it’s got a lot of great stuff going on in it and the fans are responding awesome.”

The message is clear: if you’re having a hard time running Starfield on PC, upgrade your rig.

Of course, no game runs flawlessly on all PC configurations. System requirements are designed to give players an idea of what’s required before they buy. But Starfield’s ‘mostly positive’ user review rating on Steam suggests the PC version has launched in a good state, which is quite the thing for a Bethesda game. The Microsoft effect, perhaps?

Nintendo Reportedly Demoed Switch 2 at gamescom 2023, Visuals ‘Comparable’ to PS5 and Xbox Series

8 months 1 week ago

Nintendo reportedly revealed Switch 2 behind closed doors at gamescom 2023 last month, showing off the power of its upcoming next-gen console.

According to Eurogamer, the Switch 2 was shown running a ‘souped up’ version of Switch launch title Zelda: Breath of the Wild, although there’s apparently no suggestion the game will be re-released.

Meanwhile, VGC reported Nintendo showed off Epic’s The Matrix Awakens Unreal Engine 5 tech demo running on hardware with the specs Nintendo is targeting for its future console. The site said this demo ran using Nvidia’s AI-powered DLSS upscaling technology alongside ray tracing, with visuals ‘comparable’ to PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series consoles.

Nintendo is reportedly set to release its next-gen console during the second half of 2024, with development kits now with partner studios.

Apparently this new next-gen console can be used in portable mode, like the Nintendo Switch, and has an LCD screen as opposed to an OLED screen in order to keep costs down. It also comes with a cartridge slot for physical games. However, the crucial question of backwards compatibility with Nintendo Switch games remains unclear. Nintendo has yet to comment on the reports.

Starfield and Baldur’s Gate 3 Revive Age-Old RPG Debate About Encumbrance

8 months 1 week ago

It’s a debate as old as role-playing games themselves: should players have to deal with encumbrance?

The recent release of Larian’s Baldur’s Gate 3 and Bethesda’s Starfield have thrust the encumbrance debate back into the headlines, with both games employing a system that restricts how much stuff you can carry.

While each game employs systems and mechanics that let you carry more and more, it is inevitable that as a player, you’re going to have to spend a decent chunk of your time fussing with managing your character or characters’ carry weight limit.

In Starfield’s case, encumbrance is a big enough issue for some that they are willing to lose access to gaining achievements in order to increase the carry limit via console commands on PC. This in turn has made a mod designed to prevent the achievements from being disabled one of the most popular on NexusMods.

It’s a different situation on Xbox Series X and S, of course. Starfield on console does not grant access to console command cheats, leaving players faced with the dreaded encumbrance mechanic.

Starfield Players Are Really Trying to Pretend It's On PlayStation

8 months 1 week ago

Starfield is now available on PC and as an Xbox Series X and S console exclusive, but some players are really trying to pretend it's on PlayStation 5 too.

From using the DualSense controller to play the game, to creating custom "limited edition" Starfield PS5s, and even modding in the PlayStation Studios intro, some users have seemingly taken Bethesda's Xbox exclusivity hard.

Players can use the PS5's DualSense controller to play Starfield quite easily, of course, since the game is on PC and the DualSense is a fully supported gamepad there. Redditor aqkj questioned a Facebook advert showing a Starfield player using the PS5 controller before many fans commented they'd be doing the exact same with the PC version.

Ironically, upon the early access launch of Starfield on September 1, some users did have trouble getting their PS5 controller to work with the game, though this has an easy fix of downloading the DualSense app.

Persona 4 Golden Izanagi Figure Returns in March 2024

8 months 1 week ago

Persona 4 Golden Izanagi Figure

Megahouse revealed more information about the new Persona 4 Golden figure of Izanagi. The figure costs ¥28,380 yen (or about $192), and it is expected to release on March 2024 in Japan. Pre-orders for the new Izanagi figure will open on September 8, 2023 at 1pm JST, and it will be available from the Premium Bandai online store.

The new Izanagi statue belongs to the Game Characters Collection DX line of figures. This is version 2 of the original character figure, which appeared originally on January 2012. This new version was revealed as an unpainted prototype back in late May 2023.

The figure depicts the Persona in a combat pose, surrounded by blue flames. These flames are a characteristic visual in the Persona games that occurs when a character summons their Persona.

You can take a better look at the new Persona 4 Golden Izanagi version 2 statue here:

Izanagi is the starting Persona of the Persona 4 protagonist, Yu Narukami, and as such is a very popular character. Other recent Megahouse Persona merchandise includes a figure of Loki from the Persona 5 series.

The Switch 2 Reportedly Shown Off at Gamescom

8 months 1 week ago

Switch 2 Gamescom

Nintendo may have been showing off the Switch 2 at Gamescom 2023, according to reports. Eurogamer said the company apparently was presenting the new hardware to tech partners in private demonstrations. [Thanks, Eurogamer!]

Due to the private nature of the Switch 2 demonstrations, the reports don't tell us much about what we can expect from the new Nintendo hardware. However, reports do state that the game being used to show off the hardware was The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild. This suggests that either the game will be re-released on the new hardware or the new system will be backwards compatible with existing Switch games.

While there is no official confirmation of the existence of a Switch successor, rumors have been circulating about its existence for a while. VGC reported in July 2023 that dev kits for the Switch 2 may already be in the hands of some studios, although details on the system itself were scarce. If reports are true, the console may see a release in late 2024.

First, here's the FFXIV key art that prominently shows Zero at the center of things. Square Enix introduced her in the Endwalker expansion. However, it was the 6.2 Buried Memory story quests that she came more to the forefront. The art features characters like the Warrior of Light, Y’shtola, Alisaie, Alphinaud, and Estinien.

Nintendo Switch 2 tech demos and potential launch titles discussed

8 months 1 week ago

This week on the Eurogamer Newscast, we discuss today's report by Eurogamer that Nintendo is showing Switch 2 tech demos to developers, including at Gamescom last month. The new hardware from the Big N now feels closer than ever - but when exactly will it arrive?

More importantly, perhaps - for any Nintendo console - is what Nintendo game will it launch alongside? Will Switch 2's beefier specs be a smart time to finally launch Metroid Prime 4? Or does Nintendo go with the more mass market approach, and tap up its 3D Mario team?

Finally, since it's out and it's probably going to be the biggest game of the year, we discuss the opening moments of Starfield - beyond the hour we all spend in the character creator. Joining me this week to share their thoughts on all that are Ed Nightingale and Victoria Kennedy.

Miyamoto explains what Charles Martinet's Mario Ambassador job actually entails

Martinet, meanwhile, was announced to be starting a new position as a Mario Ambassador.

Now, in a new video message, both Miyamoto and Martinet have shared more on this new role.

Baldur's Gate 3 on PS5 is effectively the PC version at ultra settings

8 months 1 week ago

Baldur's Gate 3 is one of the most highly acclaimed games of the year, marrying the best of video games with the complexity and nuance of a Dungeons and Dragons campaign. It's unashamedly a PC-centric title, with a dense interface and controls best suited for a computer keyboard so it's not totally clear how well the game will fare on PS5. Adding to potential controller quirks, the PC build has rather problematic performance in a handful of areas later in the game, which threaten to disrupt the PS5 and its relatively meagre CPU. Happily, PlayStation 5 manages to deliver a creditable rendition of the game, but the now legendary Act Three continues to humble CPU performance - perhaps more than we anticipated going in.

Baldur's Gate 3 has been available on PC for about a month now and most of the findings from that version apply equally to the PS5 release. It's definitely a good-looking game, though not a boundary-pushing one - its visual best suited to the elevated camera angle. Up close, you see the limitations of Larian's proprietary engine tech, with lighting and model detail that doesn't always survive close scrutiny, but it looks perfectly fine most of the time, especially in naturally-grounded outdoor scenes.

Nintendo’s Shigeru Miyamoto Issues Heartfelt Thanks to Former Voice of Mario, Charles Martinet

8 months 1 week ago

Nintendo development legend Shigeru Miyamoto has issued a video message thanking the former voice of Mario Charles Martinet.

Last month, Nintendo announced that Martinet, the original voice actor of Mario who has played the character since 1996, is "stepping back from recording character voices for our games" and will now serve as a "Mario Ambassador”. Nintendo later confirmed Martinet does not voice Mario in upcoming Switch exclusive Super Mario Bros. Wonder.

In the special video message issued today, September 7, Miyamoto recalled when Martinet made his debut as the voice of Mario in 1996’s seminal 3D platformer, Super Mario 64, his penchant for calling the Nintendo legend “papa!”, as well as the many trips the pair had taken together promoting Mario and Nintendo across the globe.

Miyamoto said he was “deeply grateful” for Martinet’s work bringing Nintendo characters to life for nearly 30 years. “Charles-san, thank you very much,” Miyamoto said.

Starfield Fans are Obsessed With Putting Todd Howard in the Game

Starfield is officially out, and modders have been working hard creating helpful add-ons, from useful, quality-of-life mods such as revamping the inventory UI to unofficially adding support for DLSS. Others have added more cosmetic things like reskin in-game clothes. And then there are some people out there who keep modding Bethesda's Todd Howard into the game.

Several individuals have posted mods on NexusMods, replacing miscellaneous things with Todd Howard's face. One mod by ronaldmoon, for example, replaces every single portrait in the Constellation Lodge with a picture of Todd Howard. ScarClaw72's mod replaces the Starfield logo and splash screen with pictures of Howard. While GeraldMods replaces the flashlight texture with a picture of Howard's face.

How The Last of Us Was Brought to Life for Halloween Horror Nights 2023

8 months 1 week ago

Universal Halloween Horror Nights Orlando 2023 is in full swing, and the most exciting new addition is a haunted house based on Naughty Dog’s The Last of Us video game. Naughty Dog co-president and The Last of Us creator Neil Druckmann and Universal Orlando Senior Director Mike Aiello took IGN on a walkthrough of the house just hours before its grand opening, and then once night fell, we got to walk through it ourselves. Druckmann and Aiello shared how this collaboration came to be, the biggest challenges they faced, and how they captured The Last of Us’ signature tone.

It All Started With a Tweet

Having grown up in Miami, Florida, Druckmann would often make the trek to Orlando for Halloween Horror Nights each year. After a visit to Universal Studios Orlando in December 2021, Druckmann tweeted out, “I’d love to do a TLoU Halloween Horror Nights attraction! Who do I need to talk to?!” As it turns out, he needed to talk to Aiello, the man at Universal who could make it happen. And after seeing the tweet Aiello excitedly sent him a message to get the ball rolling. The rest is history.

Modding Starfield Blocks Achievements, So Modders Modded That Out

8 months 1 week ago

Starfield mods can do anything from improve its systems to break the game, but installing one also turns off achievements — so someone modded that out.

As reported by VG247, one player has now created a pretty major workaround for achievement hunters on Steam. Brunph on modding website NexusMods has created the aptly titled Achievement Enabler mod, which essentially allows endless meddling without any consequences.

Without the mod, Starfield saves are very sensitive to exploits. Using console commands (a list of which can be found in IGN's Starfield guide) or installing mods essentially marks the player as a cheater, meaning any saves using them can no longer obtain Steam achievements.

While it's unclear if the Achievement Enabler mod allows console commands to be used without consequences, it definitely allows mods. This means players can install some pretty exploitative upgrades that make achievement hunting a lot easier.

There is a more innocent side of this, of course, as it also lets Starfield players install mods that just improve certain features without breaking the game and still enjoy achievement hunting. Bethesda's own inventory system has been a big frustration for many players, for example, so someone made a mod to improve it. Turning off achievements for someone installing this is perhaps a little harsh, but adding the Achievement Enabler mod will allow players to continue as normal.

Starfield Players Discover Infinite Money Exploit

8 months 1 week ago

Starfield hasn't been out a week yet but players have already discovered an infinite money exploit that's very similar to that in The Elder Scrolls 5: Skyrim.

As reported by PC Gamer, YouTuber vNivara uploaded a video showing how players can access infinite amounts of credits by breaking into shop vendors' secret stashes, stealing all their wares, and then selling them back.

This works the same as the main infinite money exploit in Skyrim, but is perhaps more likely to get patched out as it involves falling through the map instead of finding a sneaky stash under some rocks in Dawnstar.

Players will need to prepare a little before accessing this area by obtaining the Power Boostpack mod and reaching Rank 2 in the Boost Pack Training Skill.

vNivara shows exactly how to access the vendor chests, which sit underneath New Atlantis, with a bunch of parkour moves and jumps that eventually lead to a fall through the map. Players can then steal everything from the chests, however, before warping back topside.

Vendors can then be reset by heading off to another planet, resting for a bit, and zooming back, letting the player rinse and repeat the method for an infinite amount of cash.

EA Sports UFC 5

Platform: PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X/S

Release:

The EA Sports UFC franchise made its debut in 2014, the first MMA game released by the company following its non-UFC-licensed title, 2010's EA Sports MMA. Letter From The Editor #12: a note about spam and the modern reality of writing about big video games

8 months 1 week ago

Hello folks. How was Baldur's Gate 3 August for you? Ready for Starfield September? I hope you are, because lemme tell you, it's coming all right. In truth, I was surprised (and somewhat saddened) by some of the comments we received around our Baldur's Gate 3 coverage. If you missed them, they were mostly in the vein of saying our increased volume of BG3-related posts felt like "spam", harking back to when we (and the internet at large) all went similarly bananas over Elden Ring last year. Affogato review: Persona goes on a coffee date with tower assault dungeon crawling

8 months 1 week ago

Sometimes, a game sits at such a cross section of my interests that it almost feels made specifically for me. In the case of Affogato, it’s three of my favourite types of games mashed together: it’s Coffee Talk by way of Persona by way of any card-based tower defence game – only here it’s sort of "reverse tower defence", as the game's Steam page is keen to point out. It's your own card units that are the ones moving along pre-defined tracks wreaking havoc on stationary enemies, not the other way around. Maybe tower assault would be a better term, but that's by the by. Served with a dollop of anime froth on the top, Affogato should be my exact cuppa joe. But despite its intriguing ingredients, I wouldn't say it's been wholly successful in slooshing them all together.

Star Ocean: The Second Story R Noel Character Trailer Appears

There’s a new Star Ocean: The Second Story R character trailer, and this one stars Noel Chandler. He’s a later game recruit. He also isn’t limited to certain routes, like a few other characters. He’s known as being one of the symbology users and someone you can rely on for support.

Here’s his trailer. It begins with the Star Ocean: The Second Story R scene where everyone meets Noel for the first time. He’s living in a cabin in the Endangered Species Protection Zone. After that, he joins the group to investigate a disturbance. After that, we get to see him in battle. He first performs an earth-based spell that summons a rocky titan. After that, he uses Stone Rain.

Here's a list of the other Star Ocean: The Second Story R character trailers we've seen so far:
