9 months 1 week ago

The first was a reveal for the game's next character to be added, A.K.I., and the second was for an upcoming collaboration with Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles to promote the latter's new movie.

A.K.I. is described as a "maniacal poison aficionado", and it's easy to see why from her reveal trailer.

Final Fantasy 16 sales did not meet high expectations, says Square Enix president

9 months 1 week ago

Sales of Final Fantasy 16 did not meet Square Enix's high expectations, said president Takashi Kiryu.

Last week the company's latest earnings report was released and while net sales increased, operating profit dropped 79 percent from ¥14.4bn to just ¥3.0bn.

During a post-earnings call to analysts, Kiryu said the high end of the company's expectations were not met and the slow adoption of the PlayStation 5 was a limiting factor, Bloomberg reports.

Square Enix Shared FFVII Remake Aerith Wall Market Dress Concept Art

9 months 1 week ago

FFVII Remake Aerith dress concept art

Square Enix shared new concept art and details of Aerith wearing a dress in FFVII Remake. The art shared includes color and black and white versions of one of the three dresses Aerith can wear in the game. Depending on how many Odd Jobs Cloud completes during Chapter 8 of the game, Aerith will be able to wear one out of three different dresses.

The concept art shared focuses only on the second dress. To obtain it, players need to complete between 3-5 side quests during Chapter 8. Aerith wears this dress to infiltrate Don Corneo’s mansion during Chapter 9 of FFVII Remake.

This particular dress includes floral motifs in various places, including the necklace Aerith wears, and decorations added to the dress. Additionally, Square Enix pointed out that Aerith’s hair is also slightly curlier than in her usual model.

You can take a better look at the new FFVII Remake concept art of Aerith wearing a dress here:

https://twitter.com/FFVIIR_CLOUD/status/1688384468686671872

Similarly, Tifa and Cloud can also obtain three different dresses depending on the player’s actions at different points in the game. Square Enix recently shared some concept art of one of Cloud’s dresses.

Final Fantasy VII Remake is readily available for the PS4, PS5, and Windows PC.

Where to Buy Pokemon Squishmallows

Squishmallow plushes from Jazwares are all the rage with kids these days, and Pokemon is as popular as it’s ever been. So it only makes sense that Pokemon Squishmallows would be incredibly popular. And buddy, they sure are. They’re so popular that many of the configurations are hardly ever available in stock anywhere. And if you do find one, it’s often from a third-party reseller that has jacked up the price. Highly uncool.

The world of Pokemon Squishmallow retail is a confusing place, but we're here to help. Below, we've gathered all the links in one place. You'll find info on where you can buy all the various Pokemon plushies in their various sizes, which range from 10 to 20 inches. A word of warning, though: prices flucuate like you wouldn't believe on the ones sold by third-party retailers (i.e. most of the ones available) so the prices below are based on the time of writing. Now let’s get down to it.

Winking Pikachu Squishmallow

Available at MSRP

The latest addition to the Pikachu plush lineup is Winking Pikachu. It's pretty much identical to the standard (and much harder to find) Pikachu Squishmallow, but its left eye is winking. So there you have it.

Baldur’s Gate 3 Now One of the Biggest Steam Games Ever

9 months 1 week ago

Baldur’s Gate 3’s huge launch swelled over the weekend, with the Dungeons & Dragons role-playing game breaking the 800,000 concurrent players barrier on August 6.

The peak concurrent count on Steam was 814,666, which puts Baldur’s Gate 3 in ninth-place in Steam’s all-time concurrent players list. It’s chasing down eighth-placed Hogwarts Legacy, seventh-placed Amazon’s New World, and sixth-placed FromSoftware’s Elden Ring.

Clearly, Baldur’s Gate 3 has exceeded all expectations, particularly those of developer Larian. Last week, Larian boss Swen Vincke said he told the developer’s IT team to expect 100,000 concurrent players max. Baldur’s Gate 3 is still the top-selling game on Steam by revenue.

The huge PC launch is said to have boosted interest in the PlayStation 5 version, which is set to launch September 6 (the Xbox version may or may not come out this year).

“Thank you everyone for all the love and support,” Vincke tweeted. “It brought a tear to many eyes and it's incredibly motivating for all of us. We can't thank you enough.”

Baldur’s Gate 3 Dev’s Top Tip for D&D Newcomers: ‘Take It Slow and Trust the Dice’

9 months 1 week ago

If you’re playing smash hit Baldur’s Gate 3 but have never played a game like it or Dungeons & Dragons before, you may find it difficult and overwhelming.

Baldur’s Gate 3 can be a complicated and punishing experience, especially in combat. There’s a lot to think about during each encounter, and the game itself does little to help the player understand its many systems.

As an RPG based on the 5th-edition Dungeons & Dragons rule set, Baldur’s Gate 3 doesn’t work like many other popular video game RPGs, so for newcomers there is a degree of unlearning that needs to be done to succeed.

While D&D veterans instinctively understand how to compose a balanced party, position their characters advantageously before initiating combat, and how to maximise their chance to hit, the unfamiliar may be left feeling bewildered and downbeat as they repeatedly fail combat encounters. And given just how incredibly popular Baldur’s Gate 3 has become, it seems reasonable to assume there are many newcomers having trouble right now.

IGN has a useful Baldur’s Gate 3 beginner’s guide that includes tips and tricks, but Larian director of publishing, Michael Douse, took to Twitter to offer some useful advice that gets to the heart of the experience Larian aimed to create.

Baldur's Gate 3 players already have a bazillion requests for modders - I have only one

9 months 1 week ago

Baldur's Gate 3 is the CRPG with a billion and one features, but there will always be players who want a billion and two and yes, I am among these insatiable souls. I cracked a fresh save over the weekend, having bid a sad goodbye to my early access Tiefling rogue, and I already know what I’d like from the game’s modding scene, or preferably, a forthcoming official update. No, it isn’t new races, or increased party sizes, or the removal of the weight limit (which you can get around by offloading spare loot to your Tardis-esque interdimensional campsite). What I’d like most is the ability to switch between characters during dialogue. You’ll trigger many of these conversations without warning as you explore the world, and I routinely bumble into chitchats the character I’m controlling isn’t quite prepped for.

The joys of Pokémon Go Fest London

9 months 1 week ago

Pokémon Go's newly-introduced Showcases are one of my favourite additions to the game in years. They're local leaderboards, in a nutshell - a feature which first debuted in developer Niantic's now-canned NBA All-Stars - that let you show off specific Pokémon and win in-game rewards. What's really great about Showcases, though, is their smart design with a very low barrier to entry, meaning there's no need to meet other players, or cough up for premium items in order to get involved. This ease of taking part has ensured Showcases are a success, but has also led to something of a revelation for me, as I've looked at my local leaderboards and read dozens of player names I've never seen around my area before. These are people who aren't in my local raid groups and whose names don't regularly appear in gyms, but who are still clearly playing and enjoying the game every day. And the fact this is possible is a great sign for Pokémon Go's ongoing popularity in general, I think - that a very wide spectrum of people are playing and finding fun in the game, and doing so in different ways.

Baldur’s Gate 3 Hotfix 1 Patch Notes Tackle Bugs and Crashes

Baldur’s Gate 3 players who experienced bugs and crashes immediately after launch may find some relief with a new update. Larian announced a new version of the game is live. Updating it brings it up to 4.1.1.3624901. This update doesn’t add any new features. It also temporarily halts cross-saves, due to saving issues, ahead of fixes to prepare it for the PS5 launch. The full Baldur’s Gate 3 Hotfix 1 patch notes go over all the changes.

Fixing Baldur’s Gate 3 patches and bugs blocking progress is such a major focus with Hotfix 1 that there is a whole section dedicated to them. There are 18 specific ones handled. Some of them are major, like Steam API startup crashes or one that keeps you from progressing after talking with a certain boss. A few are incredibly specific and let someone finally have a Zariel tiefling Guardian.

However, the Baldur’s Gate 3 Hotfix 1 patch notes section with the most fixes is the Cinematics one. There are 38 issues tackled there. Six of them deal with spoilers.

Here are the full Baldur's Gate 3 Hotfix 1 patch notes for 4.1.1.3624901 from Steam. Note that there are some spoilers in the "Cinematics" section.

Yusuke and Goemon Bewilder Their Enemies in Persona 5 Tactica

Persona 5 Tactica Yusuke

Atlus shared a new Persona 5 Tactica character trailer focused on Yusuke Kitagawa. His Phantom Thief codename is Fox, and he fights alongside his Persona Goemon. Yusuke is an art student from Kosei High School. The new introduction trailer showcases one of Fox and Goemon’s new skills.

Although Yusuke looks like a composed and polite young man, his devotion to art often leads him to say things that are out of touch with the real world. The contrast between his appearance and behavior often leaves everyone around him perplexed.

The latest Persona 5 Tactica trailer showed one of Yusuke’s new abilities. The name roughly translates to “A Phantomlike Thief,” and it allows him to create three copies of himself with the smoke of Goemon’s pipe. The smoke clones can be used to distract enemies and draw agro from them.

Check out the new Persona 5 Tactica trailer introducing Yusuke here:

Bloodborne Hack Shows What a PlayStation 5 Version Would Look Like

9 months 1 week ago

A hacked version of Bloodborne running in 1080p and at a 60 frames per second has revealed what the much-requested PlayStation 5 version would look like.

Twitter user Illusion used a hacked PS5 to get FromSoftware's beloved gothic horror RPG running at an advanced performance and shared more than two minutes of gameplay (below). The 60fps mod for Bloodborne, which is otherwise locked at 30fps on its native PlayStation 4, was developed by hacker and dataminer Lance McDonald.

"Illusion has done it," McDonald said in a tweet. "My Bloodborne 60fps patch has been ported to run within the current state of PlayStation 5 hacking [and] exploitation: real retail PS5 hardware running Bloodborne at locked 60fps in full 1080p."

Fans have long-requested an update to the 2015 game, with a PC version perhaps being the most sought after version. Things even got so desperate that when Bloodborne-like Lies of P received a PC demo, players immediately modded FromSoftware assets into the game.

Red Dead Redemption on PS4 and Nintendo Switch Confirmed, PC Gamers Left Hanging

9 months 1 week ago

Red Dead Redemption and zombie add-on Undead Nightmare are coming to PlayStation 4 and Nintendo Switch on August 17, Rockstar has announced.

Rockstar’s 2010 Western adventure, which only launched on PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360, is being ported to PS4 and Switch by UK developer Double Eleven Studios, with PlayStation 5 backwards compatibility supported.

The port is not a remaster or a remake but a "conversion", according to Rockstar, and includes newly supported languages such as Simplified and Traditional Chinese, Korean, Polish, Brazilian Portuguese, Russian, and Latin American Spanish. It costs $49.99 on the Nintendo Switch eShop and PlayStation Store, with physical versions arriving October 13.

The trailer is below:

Rockstar gives no mention of PC or Xbox versions. Red Dead Redemption is already available on modern Xbox consoles via backwards compatibility with the original Xbox 360 version. However, the lack of a PC version, which Rockstar has never officially released, is sure to come as a disappointment.

Red Dead Redemption introduces series star John Marston as he journeys across the American west and Mexico to track down the last remaining members of the notorious Van der Linde Gang. The events of 2018’s Red Dead Redemption 2 lead directly into the story of its predecessor.

Red Dead Redemption on Nintendo Switch and PS4 also includes Undead Nightmare, the story expansion that sees Marston fight to survive the zombie horde.

Magic: The Gathering to Get Cards Based on Bethesda's Fallout Franchise

9 months 1 week ago

Magic: The Gathering is collaborating with Bethesda's Fallout franchise to release a set of Commander decks, Wizards of the Coast has announced.

The undisclosed number of decks launch in March 2024 and are seemingly themed after factions of the Wasteland (such as the Brotherhood of Steel and the Railroad) and include bloodthirsty raiders, towering super mutants, irradiated monsters, and deadly retro-futurist robots.

Unlike other crossover sets — like the recent Lord of the Rings release that contained a $2 million card — Fallout won't be released in booster packs but is instead restricted to Commander decks: ready-to-play starter products for Magic: The Gathering's casual format that don't require additional purchases.

Wizards of the Coast failed to reveal a specific release date, which characters or games would be included, or how many decks would be released, though crossovers usually include four.

"One thing that has remained constant throughout our 30-year history is how much our players love Magic," said global play lead Bill Rose of the announcement. "As we look to the future, one of our guiding principles is to continue to curate new and memorable gameplay experiences, whether you’ve been playing Magic for a couple of months, years, decades, or anything in between."

Blizzard Banned Diablo 4 Players Who Used Controversial Character Realm Transfer Exploit

9 months 1 week ago

Blizzard said it has banned Diablo 4 players who used a character realm transfer exploit that went viral late July.

The bug let players transfer their Eternal Realm characters into the Seasonal Realm. To exploit the glitch, players needed to be in a group with a friend in the Seasonal Realm, briefly disconnect from the internet, then log back into the Seasonal Realm with their Eternal character.

Eternal characters who exploited this glitch potentially benefitted from the Seasonal Blessing experience boost, which might have let them level up faster than they would normally be able to. Eternal Realm characters were also able to carry over their gear and inventory items, which created obvious issues for the balance of the Seasonal Realm Blizzard has created.

When the exploit hit the internet, Diablo 4 players predicted Blizzard would respond by wielding the banhammer, and so it has proven. In a post on the Diablo forum, community chief Adam Fletcher said Blizzard had patched out the exploit in a recent hotfix, and banned “select accounts” who used it.

“I just wanted to let everyone know that this was addressed a few days ago in our last hotfix and hasn’t been present in the game since,” Fletcher said. “We have also actioned on select accounts related to this incident. We appreciate everyone for bringing this to our attention.”

Red Dead Redemption Comes To PlayStation 4 And Switch Next Week

Red Dead Redemption Switch PlayStation 4

Red Dead Redemption is one of the best games of the PlayStation 3/Xbox 360 era, and it hasn’t migrated from those platforms since it arrived in 2010. After 13 years, that finally changes with a surprise jump to PlayStation 4 and Switch.

Rockstar announced today that Double Eleven Studios is creating these ports, which include the zombie-themed Undead Nightmare expansion in one package. This also means that PlayStation 5 players can experience the game due to PS4 backwards compatibility. While it's unclear if these versions feature any kind of performance or graphical improvements, they do have additional language support for simplified and traditional Chinese, Korean, Polish, Brazilian Portuguese, Russian, and Latin American Spanish.

Street Fighter 6 DLC Character A.K.I. Gets Twisted Teaser Trailer

Street Fighter 6 AKI

Following her announcement as the first all-new character to join the Street Fighter 6 roster by way of DLC, A.K.I. gave fans a taste of what to expect when she is added to the game this fall. During this weekend's Evo 2023 fighting game tournament, we received a host of new announcements, including new characters added to the roster of the upcoming Mortal Kombat 1 and even a surprise TMNT collaboration with Street Fighter 6. However, Capcom didn't stop there, as it gave us the first teaser trailer for its 20th playable character, A.K.I.

Deathbound Is A New Soulslike With A Unique Class-Based Twist

Deathbound Soulslike Indie Game Revealed Gameplay Trailer

Publisher Tate Multimedia and developer Trialforge Studio have released the debut trailer for Deathbound, its new Soulslike action RPG with a unique class-based twist coming to Steam next year.

Set in a crumbling civilization where unnatural science clashes with fanatical faith, players take on the role of a warrior set on confronting the Church of Death. In this world – Ziêminal – there's no good and no evil; just monsters and enemies in your way. And if today's Deathbound trailer is anything to go on, they won't go down without a fight.

Check out the Deathbound reveal trailer for yourself below

As you can see in the trailer above, players can freely switch between various heroes of different classes in a party at any time, and they'll need to do so to survive in specific situations. Trialforge Studio calls this a "Binding System, allowing players to absorb the essence of the fallen warriors found throughout the world." Using the collected essence, players can obtain new skills and abilities to transform their playstyle, or they can use it to form a party of heroes they can then switch between.

DF Weekly: PS5 exploit opens the door to new PS4 60fps upgrades

9 months 1 week ago

Perhaps inevitably, Digital Foundry Direct Weekly returns once again with a new episode and it's fair to say that we have an exceptional line-up of topics and supporter questions this week. We've already posted an article about path-traced lighting coming to Skyrim, but what stood out to me this week was news about the discovery of a new exploit for PlayStation 5 - and it's already delivering 60fps upgrades for PS4 titles that never received any kind of official patch.

Console exploits aren't talked about much because of their piracy-adjacent nature, but the scale and scope of the 'PS5 Hack' is limited by a number of factors, not least that the exploits have already been patched by Sony. To use an exploit on the PS5 means you can't run any new games and you can't go online. It then becomes more of a technical curiosity, and one of those curiosities is that a range of frame-rate unlocking patches that only work on exploited PS4 and PS4 Pro consoles can now be adapted to run on PlayStation 5, with most of the patching work being carried out by an individual known as Illusion.

The release on PS4 and Switch isn't a remaster unfortunately - Rockstar has called it a "conversion" produced by Double Eleven Studios, which has quite a bit of experience in porting games to modern consoles.

Metal Gear 60 Million Sales

Konami announced that the Metal Gear games franchise achieved sales of 60 million copies worldwide. This information was revealed in the latest update to the company’s corporate information, placing Metal Gear among their most high-profile franchises. [Thanks, Anime News Network!]

While there haven’t been any new games in the Metal Gear franchise since 2018’s Metal Gear Survive, the high sales number indicates that it's still popular. There is a revival on the way though. The Metal Gear Solid Master Collection Vol 1, a remastered compilation of Metal Gear Solid, Metal Gear Solid 2 and Metal Gear Solid 3, is coming to modern systems on October 24, 2023. Metal Gear Solid 3 is also getting a remake in the form of Metal Gear Solid Delta: Snake Eater.

Other high-profile franchises in Konami’s financial information include Yu-Gi-Oh! and their sports titles. The Powerful Pro Yakyu baseball series sold 24.8 million copies on consoles, with roughly 40 million downloads for the mobile titles. Their soccer series, eFootball, reached 700 million sales, if sales of older Pro Evolution Soccer and Winning Eleven games are included.

Final Fantasy Magic the Gathering Triple Triad

A Final Fantasy collaboration is coming to Magic: The Gathering. Wizards of the Coast made the announcement at GenCon 2023 as part of the Magic at 30 panel.

Details are sparse on what designs will be featured in the Final Fantasy set. However, Wizards of the Coast confirmed that the series will cover the whole series, covering everything from the first game to Final Fantasy XVI. The set will be released physically and will be available on MTG Arena, the digital version of the game.

It’s not the first time that Wizards of the Coast worked with Final Fantasy staff. In 2019, the Japanese release of the War of the Spark expansion featured unique art from Japanese illustrators. One of these was famed Final Fantasy character and logo designer Yoshitaka Amano, who produced artwork of Liliana, Dreadhorde General. Other Japanese artists who've produced artwork for Magic: The Gathering include Yoji Shinkawa and Junji Ito.

New Shonen Jump Manga Is Shojo Null

New Shonen Jump Manga Is Shojo Null

The first new manga series to appear in Shonen Jump in August 2023 is Shojo Null by Kanae Nakanishi and Akima. The first chapter is available to read worldwide via MangaPlus and Viz Media. It is free to read online.

Shojo Null begins with a rather shocking panel of a character in a dress saying, “I’ve made up my mind! I’m going to kill all those nasty humans!” It then reveals that the character is a robotic creation known as a Gijin. These are designed to be mindless automatons who perform less desirable tasks and jobs. That initial character is Fuji-93106, a military Gijin who was the only survivor of a crash. We then learn that a young boy named Riaha, whose father realized Gijin were sentient beings. He found and saved Fuji-93106, who says their name is Marie, and is housing them. The first chapter deals with what happens when Marie is exposed to the outside world.

This is one of three new Shonen Jump manga to show up lately. Sachi’s Records: Sachi’s Book of Revelation and Wild Strawberry both started their runs in July 2023. However, this is the first new series to start in August 2023. Before that, Ice-Head Gill debuted in June 2023.

Shojo Null is now running in Shonen Jump, and the next new chapter of the manga will appear on August 11, 2023.

Call of Duty Modern Warfare 3 finally has its release date: November 10, 2023.

Confirmation comes from a teaser trailer, below, which includes snippets of dialogue from series star Captain Price and Shadow Company boss Phillip Graves, who said: "Never bury your enemies alive." Guess Graves survived the events of Modern Warfare 2 then!

“The ultimate threat awaits,” reads the brief description of the teaser, below:

There’s not much else to go on, but we do know Modern Warfare 3 sees the return of proper slide cancelling after a not so subtle tease sent to Call of Duty influencers. A number of leaks have already revealed weapons and even key art, the latter of which is now confirmed by today’s teaser. Activision has yet to confirm platforms for Modern Warfare 3, but a release on PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X and S, and PC is expected.

Sega Unveils Super Cute Trailer for Sonic & Friends Animated Shorts on TikTok

9 months 1 week ago

Sega dropped the trailer for the Sonic & Friends animated shorts series on TikTok.

The company posted the trailer on the TikTok page for its Japanese branch on Monday, August 7. Sonic & Friends gives us a look at Sonic, Tails, Amy, and Knuckles in CGI chibi form having all sorts of fun while foiling Dr. Eggman’s plans, whatever they may be.

The title Sonic & Friends implies every character in the Sonic the Hedgehog game series may appear alongside Sonic’s small circle of friends, including Shadow, Rouge, Cream, and maybe the Babylon Rogues. However, it’s unknown if any of those characters will be part of the animated shorts.

The TikTok trailer for Sonic & Friends comes over a month after Sega filed a trademark in Japan bearing its name. Fans had speculated Sonic & Friends may relate to a new game, but the mark was filed under multiple classifications, including Machines and Appliances, Toys, Paper, Clothes, and Educational and Recreational. Those categories imply Sega may explore merchandising opportunities with the Sonic & Friends branding aimed at young children.

Remnant 2 Developer 'Looking at' Crossplay Support

9 months 1 week ago

Remnant 2 developer Gunfire Games is "actively" working on crossplay for its popular co-op shooter.

Confirmation comes from Gunfire Games president and Remnant 2 director David Adams, who held an AMA recently on the Remnant subreddit. One of the questions asked was whether or not Gunfire Games was looking into adding crossplay into Remnant 2. Adams confirmed the feature was in the works.

"Yes, we are looking at it," Adams wrote. "There are issues with the different platforms and what they require in order to allow crossplay, but it is being actively worked on."

Adams also provided an update on the invite issue currently plaguing the PS5 version of Remnant 2. Adams admitted the issue "got buried" and that "for the foreseeable future," Gunfire Games plans to just support joining your friend's game via the join menu.

Remnant 2 was released last month as a sequel to Gunfire Games' 2019 shooter Remnant: From the Ashes. Despite some performance issues, Remnant 2 was met with critical and commercial success, becoming one of the best-selling games on Steam, and selling one million copies in its first week across all platforms.

Activision Confirms Call of Duty Modern Warfare 3 Slide Cancelling With Obvious Tease

9 months 1 week ago

Activision has confirmed slide cancelling returns for Modern Warfare 3 with the release of an obvious tease sent to Call of Duty influencers.

Warzone streamer Swagg received a package over the weekend that included a pair of slides, a can, and a call phone. What could it possibly mean? Slide-Can-Cell.

Not that further evidence was required, but Swagg also received a text message that sealed the deal: “You’ll be expected to move more quickly in Al Mazrah.” Al Mazrah is the fictional setting of last year’s Modern Warfare 2.

Slide cancelling is a long-running movement option in the Call of Duty series that high-skilled players use to avoid enemy fire. It involves cancelling the slide animation, thus resetting your tactical sprint and maintaining momentum even as you slide about.

Slide cancelling was in the original Warzone and 2019’s Modern Warfare, but for Warzone 2.0 and Modern Warfare 2 developer Infinity Ward stopped it from working as it used to (you can't slide cancel out of a tactical sprint), sparking a vociferous debate among the player base. While the community came up with their own way of performing slide cancels in both games, these methods involve more inputs and are not as powerful. Modern Warfare 3, then, looks set to U-turn on slide cancelling, speeding up movement in the process.
