Street Fighter 6 Trailer Highlights Outfit 2 Character Costumes

11 months 1 week ago

Street Fighter 6 Outfit 2

Capcom revealed the alternate Street Fighter 6 costumes, known as “Outfit 2” designs for all 18 characters in the initial roster. The alternate looks for returning and classic characters like Ryu, Ken, Chun Li, or Guile feature the original styles of the characters from previous games. Additionally, Director Takayuki Nakayama appeared on the PlayStation Blog to discuss about some of the re-designs and updates to classic characters, like Cammy.

Street Fighter 6 Director Takayuki Nakayama noted on the PlayStation Blog that developing a new numbered entry in the series was the perfect opportunity to give returning characters a significantly different look from their appearance in past entries. Some characters where especially difficult to re-design, like Chun-Li. Nakayama also commented about Cammy’s radical new design, and said that this new outfit would be akin to Cammy’s civilian clothes, while her classic leotard would be her battle outfit.

FFVII June 2023 Calendar Features Yuffie and Sonon from the Remake

June 2023's begun, and that means a new set of FFVII Remake calendar images. Square Enix took to Twitter to release the latest batch. This time, only designs from the remake appear. People can choose between a desktop wallpaper image with key art of both Yuffie and Sonon from FFVII Remake, or mobile portrait-style images of each character separately.

Here's the official announcement with all three options. Since no FFVII characters' birthdays fall in June 2023, no dates are highlighted in the June 2023 calendar. (When this does happen, the day of the character's birthday usually appears with a white circle around it. This happened with Tifa's May 3rd birthday.)

Meta Quest 3 is official, $499, and arriving this autumn

11 months 1 week ago

Following a swirl of reports earlier this year, Meta has made its latest consumer VR headset official; the Meta Quest 3 will launch this autumn, starting at a $499.99 USD price point.

Meta describes the Meta Quest 3 - which will be fully compatible with the existing Meta Quest 2 library - as the "first mainstream headset with high-res colour mixed reality", and promises "better displays and resolution", greater comfort, a 40 percent slimmer optic profile, and twice the graphics performance using "next-gen Qualcomm chipset".

Its mixed reality feature set includes "dual 4MP RGB colour cameras, a depth sensor for a more accurate representation of your play space, and 10x more pixels in Passthrough compared to Quest 2". Additionally, Meta has "completely redesigned" Quest 3's Touch Plus controllers, dropping the outer tracking rings and adding "TruTouch haptics".

Assassin's Creed VR Gets New Title, Teases Full Reveal at Ubisoft Forward

11 months 1 week ago

Assassin's Creed VR has been renamed Assassin's Creed Nexus VR, and it will launch later this year for Meta Quest VR headsets.

Announced at the Meta Quest Games Showcase, Assassin's Creed Nexus VR is the first game in the Assassin's Creed franchise to be playable in virtual reality. Originally announced in a blog post in 2021, Assassin's Creed Nexus was one of two VR games Ubisoft announced were in development for the Meta Quest VR headset along with Tom Clancy's Splinter Cell VR. However, it seems only Assassin's Creed Nexus VR will see a release, as Axios reporter Stephen Totilo reported last year that Ubisoft canceled the development of Splinter Cell VR (along with three other games).

Ubisoft previously confirmed in the blog post from 2021 that Ubisoft Red Storm, a subsidiary focused on Tom Clancy games such as The Division and Rainbow Six Siege, will take the lead on the development of Assassin's Creed Nexus VR (then called Assassin's Creed VR), with additional support from Ubisoft Reflections, Ubisoft Dusseldorf, and Ubisoft Mumbai.

New Action-Adventure-RPG Kromlech Announced With Live-Action Trailer

11 months 1 week ago

Developer Czech Perun Creative has announced Kromlech, a new action-adventure RPG with action-adventure elements that's in development for PC. No release date has been announced as of yet. It's not every day that a game is announced with a live-action trailer, but Kromlech has done just that, and you can check out that trailer above. A first batch of concept art is available in the gallery below.

Kromlech is set in a fictional world inspired by the early Iron Age Celts, among other cultures. Gameplay-wise, the developers are promising "brutal combat, challenge-based leveling, action-driven player decisions, an immersive world, no copy-paste enemies, roguelite elements," and more.

Story-wise, the developers describe Kromlech as such: "The tapestry of our world had been woven by the gods with great care a long time ago. Only the mountains and the winds can remind us of those ancient times now. Under the guidance and the protection of the gods, our civilization has prospered and grown. Yet the Golden Age was not meant to last. The flames of war scorched the land and sown chaos in their wake. Darkness took hold of the hearts of many as kin slaughtered kin. The threads of the divine plan are becoming undone and what is the gods’ response? Deafening silence… However, there is yet hope. People whisper rumors of a fearless champion, a paragon of the old ways. “Cronach” they call him. Perhaps it will be him, who will lead us back into the light. In this life, or the next…"

Stay tuned for more on Kromlech as development progresses.

AEW: Fight Forever - The Final Preview

11 months 1 week ago

When it launched in 2019, All Elite Wrestling emerged as an alternative to the mainstream of Professional Wrestling – a genre of sports entertainment that had mostly run without substantial competition in the US for decades. Its upcoming game, AEW Fight Forever, largely finds itself in the same position. It’s an arcadey and old school alternative to the more realistic and simulation focused WWE 2K series, and on that front, it succeeds at what it sets out to do. Based on about two hours of playtime with a pre-release build, Fight Forever is the kind of simple pick-up-and-play fun that wrestling games used to be, even if it is a bit rough around the edges.

I got to play Fight Forever at Gamescom last year as well, which you can read all about here. My thoughts largely haven’t changed since then, even though I’ve gotten to play with a bunch more wrestlers, more match types, on a more polished build. What impressed me this time around though were all of the small touches that really make each individual wrestler come to life. One of the issues that inevitably affects all wrestling games is that many of the wrestlers feel very samey, largely because they all pull moves from the same humongous pool of maneuvers. But Fight Forever has a number of really nice small touches that go a long way into making the characters feel unique.

Redfall's Development Was Reportedly So Troubled That Devs Hoped Microsoft Would Cancel It

11 months 1 week ago

Arkane Studios' development of Redfall was reportedly so troubled that its developers hoped Microsoft would cancel the game after acquiring the company in 2020.

Bloomberg released a report having spoken to several anonymous sources familiar with Redfall's development after it launched last month to poor reviews and significant technical issues. These sources claimed Redfall struggled with a misguided vision, staffing issues, and more.

Things allegedly became so bad at Arkane that, despite having put two years into Redfall at the time of the Xbox acquisition, staff wished it would be rebooted as a single player game or cancelled altogether.

The switch to a multiplayer focus, which was reportedly pushed for by parent company ZeniMax, appeared to be a major cause of Redfall's issues. Developers who worked on the single player Prey (which is a format Arkane is known for thanks to hits like Dishonored) were now working on a multiplayer game, and Bloomberg reported that 70% of these staff members left by the end of Redfall's development.

Replacing them was also claimed to be an issue for the same reasons: applicants looking to replace these roles were developers passionate about single player and not the multiplayer experts that Arkane needed. This led to what's claimed to be a "perpetually understaffed" team of less than 100 employees.

Spider-Man 2: How Insomniac Set Out to Create a 'Borderline Brutal' Venom Suit

11 months 1 week ago

In 1982, then Marvel Editor-in-Chief Jim Shooter purchased the idea of a black costume for Spider-man from a 22-year-old fan named Randy Schueller for $220 dollars. After rejecting Schueller’s story ideas, Shooter came up with the suit being made of an alien material, the Symbiote that would alter Peter’s powers as well as his look. The rest, as they say, is history.

Already one of the coolest and most beloved Spider-Man designs in comic history, Insomniac Games will be taking its own spin on the costume when Spider-Man 2 comes out later this year. During the first gameplay trailer, Insomniac revealed Peter Parker will be getting his own Symbiote costume along with a suite of new powers, and new troubles.

IGN sat down with Insomniac’s creative director Bryan Intihar and game director Ryan Smith to discuss the origins of their suit concept and how Insomniac approached the Symbiote costume.

If you played Insomniac’s first Spider-Man game, you might have wondered why the Symbiote suit wasn’t one of the unlockable costumes in that game. According to Intihar, at the time of Spider-Man 1 development, the team was debating whether to include the suit or not.

“When we were deep in production of Spider-Man 1, we talked about what suits we were gonna feature. And of course, as you’d probably imagine, the black suit — the Symbiote suit — came up and we kind of decided, are we gonna just give it as a visual thing, or are we actually gonna go bigger with it?”

Warhammer 40K: Rogue Trader – How Did it Take This Long to Get a Warhammer CRPG?

11 months 1 week ago

It’s truly bizarre that across the nearly 30 years of Warhammer video games, we haven’t had a single one that attempted to channel the tabletop Warhammer experience by utilizing the genre that feels best suited to do so: CRPGs. But that’s all about to change, as Pathfinder developer Owlcats has been cooking up something to fill this void. During an extensive hands-off demo of Warhammer 40K: Rogue Trader, I checked out its extremely chunky turn-based combat system, drowned in its plethora of dialogue options and social skill checks, and nodded approvingly at its lovingly faithful depiction of Warhammer’s morbid universe. While it’s still very early, so far this CRPG is shaping up to be everything I’ve wanted from a Warhammer video game.

If you’ve ever played (or even glanced at) a game of Warhammer 40K, then you probably know it’s designed for a hyper-specific kind of nerd who loves calculations, large-scale drama, and an incredibly detailed world one could easily get lost in. Warhammer 40K: Rogue Trader caters to that same kind of player by being as much of a CRPG as one could imagine.

Meta Quest Gaming Showcase Announces 7th Guest VR, Bulletstorm VR, Stranger Things VR, Asgard's Wrath 2, And More

11 months 1 week ago

With the airing of The Meta Quest Gaming Showcase, you could argue that we are officially in the season formerly known as E3. This morning, ahead of its stream, Meta shared details about its upcoming Meta Quest 3 headset, which included a few teases for games that would be revealed during its stream, which you can find the details for below.

The showcase ended with the reveal of Asgard's Wrath 2. The original Asgard's Wrath is one of VR's biggest, most ambitious (and well-reviewed) games. The sequel picks up where the story of the first game left off while adding all kinds of new mechanics. You can find more on Asgard's Wrath 2 in the upcoming issue of Game Informer's magazine, where we spoke with the game's director. The other exciting element of the sequel is it will be coming to Quest 2.

The 7th Guest VR appears to be a full remake of the original classic puzzle game but in VR. If you're unfamiliar, The 7th Guest was a landmark puzzle game for PCs that was released in 1993 and featured some of the first use of full-motion video in a video game. You can read our oral history on the game here.

Somehow we’re already in June, which makes me both cosmically confused about the passage of time and quite happy because it’s now Pride Month. That also means that queer indie developers have once again banded together and organised the third annual Queer Games Bundle on Itch.io, offering over 450 video games, board games, zines, books, soundtracks, and other creative stuff for the price of one AAA game: $60. All proceeds are split between the participating developers, and there’s some very cool stuff included.

Samba de Amigo VR game heading to Meta Quest 2 and Pro

Another Samba de Amigo game is in development, as Sega announced a VR entry during the Meta Quest Showcase. It will launch in Fall 2023. It will be available on both the Meta Quest 2 and Meta Quest Pro for $29.99. There will also be a cosmetic pre-order bonus that makes it look like Samba is wearing a Meta Quest 2 VR headset and holding its controllers instead of maracas.

The announcement included some details about how the VR rhythm game will work. Players will hold the Meta Quest controllers like maracas and move in time with the indicators they see in the headset to “play” through its songs. The base game will include 40 tracks. Sega did confirm additional music will appear as DLC. In addition to the single player mode, there will be a World Party option. This allows someone to go online and play through songs with up to seven other people. However, even if you don’t opt to play with others, you can check online leaderboards to compare your scores on songs to others’.

Here's the first batch of screenshots showing at how the VR version of Samba de Amigo will look:

Ubisoft teases June showcase and mystery game in new sneak peek trailer

As we teeter on the edge of Summer Game Fest and the Season of Big Announcements, Ubisoft is revving up for June's Ubisoft Forward showcase with a new trailer highlighting at least some of the games that'll feature - and one vague tease that may or may not be Star Wars.

Ubisoft Forward, which is being broadcast live from Los Angeles - as good an excuse as any to resurrect that old Just Dance dance number, if you ask me - takes place on Monday, 12th June, at 6pm BST/10am PDT. A pre-show of undisclosed content will begin a quarter of an hour earlier.

The main event will feature a closer look at the publisher's upcoming slate of releases, with Assassin's Creed Mirage, Avatar: Frontiers of Pandora, and The Crew Motorfest all now confirmed for a showing. We'll probably also get at least some updates on Ubisoft's raft of other lingering titles, including its free-to-play games and the perpetually delayed Skull and Bones - but not, as we recently heard, the now-rebooted Prince of Persia: Sands of Time remake.

RPS GOTY Revisited: 2013's Kentucky Route Zero goes nowhere fast, and that's why we love it

11 months 1 week ago

When RPS awarded Kentucky Route Zero the title of Game Of The Year in 2013, only two episodes out of an eventual five had been released. If this sounds like a bland statement of fact, just think about it for a second. I can't recall any other time an episodic adventure game has received GOTY-level praise before it was even concluded, let alone only 40% done.

Episodes three through five arrived sporadically: in spring 2014, summer 2016, and — after what must have been an agonising hiatus — the start of 2020. Having bypassed this wait to play the game for the first time only recently, I feel wistfully as though I'll never share quite the same fond feelings for it as contemporary fans (like our own reviews ranger Rachel, who recently named KRZ one of her all-time favourite indie games). But I'm also quite relieved that I didn't have to exercise that kind of patience. I mean, I'm very good at neglecting to carry on with games for years at a time despite thoroughly enjoying what I've played so far. But I like doing it on my terms, you know?

Hideki Kamiya Says Bayonetta 3’s Multiverse Concept Existed Since the First Game

11 months 1 week ago

Bayonetta 3 Multiverse

PlatinumGames revealed that the idea of Bayonetta 3’s multiverse concept existed since the first game's creation. Speaking as part of the latest Bayonetta 3 developer diary, Creator Hideki Kamiya revealed that the multiverse was always in the background of the games.

Kamiya and the rest of the team revealed further behind the scenes details around the multiverse concept. The team wanted to see Bayonetta travel the world, with each country being the equivalent of its own movie.

They also discussed the choices behind some of the locations. The Tokyo setting of the first segment of the game was designed to give a striking first impression of seeing Bayonetta in Shibuya. The China setting was originally planned to have large scale battles with entire armies on the Great Wall. They also shared some concept art for the Egypt and France settings.

Kamiya also assured fans that Bayonetta 3 is not the end of the series. He mentioned that he has ideas that could stretch to Bayonetta 9, which is something he has discussed before.

Stalker 2 dev says Russian hackers have leaked test build online, asks fans not to share

11 months 1 week ago

Ukrainian developer GSC Game World has asked fans not to share an early test build of Stalker 2, stolen and leaked online by Russian hackers as part of what it calls a "year and a half" attack.

GSC Game World - which relocated from Kyiv to Prague last year following Russia's invasion of Ukraine - first confirmed it was the target of Russian hackers back in March, when it revealed an employee's accounts was hacked and that the studio had been threatened with blackmail.

"We are a Ukrainian company," it wrote at the time, "and like most Ukrainians, we have experienced many things that are much more terrifying: destroyed houses, ruined lives, and the deaths of our loved ones. Attempts to blackmail or intimidate us are completely futile".

Final Fantasy 16: Exclusive Mid-Game Boss Battle Gameplay – IGN First

11 months 1 week ago

Final Fantasy 16 is June 2023’s IGN First! We’ll be bringing you tons of exclusive content all the way up to the game’s release on June 22. To kick things off, check out this lava-hot boss battle against Liquid Flame. “Liquid Flame awaits you at the Inner Sanctum of Drake’s Breath, a location you visit somewhere mid-game,” Director Hiroshi Takai tells IGN.

For longtime fans of the 35-year-running series, the name Liquid Flame might sound familiar. That’s because Liquid Flame is one of the most iconic bosses of Final Fantasy V, which was also the first game in the series Takai worked on as a developer. Takai was not the one who decided to include this nostalgic foe in Final Fantasy XVI, though, as Creative Director Kazutoyo Maehiro came up with the idea. Maehiro also wrote Final Fantasy XVI’s story, and he says that Final Fantasy V was the game that inspired him to become a creator himself.

Producer Naoki Yoshida explains: “Takai was one of the original developers for Final Fantasy V, so it is a title he has very strong feelings for. And Maehiro, well, he’s a real nerd – he’s a Final Fantasy nerd, a game nerd, and he’s crazy about detailed scenarios. Just as with Final Fantasy XIV, the many references to the series’ history come from these two guys. It’s just their touch.”

Explaining why he wanted to include Liquid Flame, Maehiro adds, “There are various reasons. First of all, I’m just a huge fan of Final Fantasy V. For me, Liquid Flame left a lasting impression because of how the character takes many different forms and shapes during battle. Drake’s Breath is a volcano stage with lava as its main concept, so for this area’s boss I thought, ‘Who else but Liquid Flame!’”
