Elden Ring Creator Is Looking to Multiplayer Games Like Escape From Tarkov for Inspiration

1 year 2 months ago

While playing Elden Ring can, if you want, be a completely solitary experience, one of its best features is its multiplayer: PvP, PvE, and the esoteric messages players leave for one another that have become something of their own meme culture. Given the unique nature of all these multiplayer interactions, it's only natural that director Hidetaka Miyazaki has been doing a lot of thinking about multiplayer technology, and how it's used in games other than his own.

Speaking to IGN following Elden Ring's five wins (including Game of the Year) at the 26th annual DICE Awards, Miyazaki brought up the subject of multiplayer when we asked him what new technologies, trends, or ideas in gaming he finds inspiring or exciting right now.

"I'm not really sure whether this is the latest trend, but the multiplayer elements that in terms of both technology and the game designs, we keep updating [them]," he said. "So I'm really interested in that as one of the fans and one of the creators. Especially speaking of [Escape From] Tarkov, for example. So I'm basically paying attention to those elements as a creator and fan of the game.

Hironobu Sakaguchi Considering PC Port and Sequel to Fantasian

1 year 2 months ago

At the Monaco Anime Game International Conferences 2023 (MAGIC 2023), Final Fantasy creator Hironobu Sakaguchi looked back at his almost four-decade long career in a 90-minute panel hosted by IGN JAPAN.

While his first game The Death Trap dates back to 1984, Sakaguchi’s latest work Fantasian was released for Apple Arcade in 2021. Fantasian met critical acclaim for incorporating real-life dioramas as its location backgrounds, a stellar soundtrack by Nobuo Uematsu and an innovative battle system that allowed the player to aim attacks and stock random encounters.

However, since it was an Apple Arcade exclusive, many RPG fans did not get the chance to play Sakaguchi’s new epic. Now, it seems that Sakaguchi wants to solve this problem.

“Many people ask for a PC port, and I also hear demand for a sequel,” Sakaguchi said.

While nothing was officially announced during the session, Sakaguchi said that he wants to continue making games and hopes to be able to meet these expectations, as Fantasian is a title he is fond of himself.

“Fantasian is a title I hope more people will get to see for themselves in the future,” Sakaguchi said.

While Sakaguchi aspires to make a PC port and sequel, he emphasized that nothing has been decided yet. Fantasian released for the Apple Arcade split into two parts. Whether or not a potential PC port would be released as a single title is unknown.

Chrono Trigger Creator Reveals Development Struggles: “We Had to Tear the Project Down"

1 year 2 months ago

Chrono Trigger is widely considered one of the best RPGs of all time, but according to Hironobu Sakaguchi, it almost became a mediocre game.

At the Monaco Anime Game International Conferences 2023 (MAGIC 2023), Sakaguchi – best known as the father of the Final Fantasy series – looked back at Chrono Trigger, a game he worked on together with Yuji Horii (Dragon Quest) and Akira Toriyama (Dragon Ball).

“I was already a big fan of Akira Toriyama’s manga before I entered the videogame industry, so working together with him was like a dream come true for me,” Sakaguchi recalled. “The same could be said for the entire staff, so his drawings became a huge motivation for us.”

That doesn’t mean that Chrono Trigger’s development was an easy one. Sakaguchi said it was the most difficult game to make amongst all of the titles he has worked on, which is why it is very dear to his heart.

“It almost became a mediocre game, so we had to tear the project down and start all over from scratch,” Sakaguchi said.

An instant classic

That was undoubtedly for the best, as the final version that was released for the Super Nintendo Entertainment System in 1995 was an instant classic that is still being talked about nearly 30 years later. Sakaguchi himself was satisfied about the end result, and he recalls that Toriyama was happy about how the game turned out too. This led them to work together again on Blue Dragon, which was released 11 years later on the Xbox 360.

Shigeru Miyamoto Imagines What Nintendo Will Be Like After He's Gone

1 year 2 months ago

For more than 45 years, Shigeru Miyamoto has worked at Nintendo in some capacity, so it's hard to imagine the home of Mario without the veteran director and designer. However, Miyamoto thinks Nintendo will "probably be the same" even after he's gone.

In an interview with NPR, Miyamoto spoke about his inspirations, Nintendo's future, and how a shared vision at the company drives its familiar essence. When asked about a Nintendo without him, Miyamoto thinks the creators and executives still there will keep things mostly the same.

"You know, I really feel it's not going to change, " Miyamoto said. "It's probably going to be the same. There's, you know, people on the executive team, creators within the company, and also people who create Mario, they all have this sense of what it means to be Nintendo."

Miyamoto chalks that outlook up to a shared understanding at Nintendo. Even as the company introduces new ideas, he described a Nintendo where everyone is mostly on the same page.

"There's always the fact that it's a new idea, but also the fact that, is it a new idea that really has the essence of Nintendo or not? And I think that's something that, you know, we have this incredible shared vision, almost a little scary shared vision, about this. So I think there won't — it's not going to change," he said.

On that same note, when NPR asked the director which Nintendo world he would like to live in when it's time for the afterlife, Miyamoto offered a bittersweet sentiment. He loves his current environment, as he can "engage in so many different things." He joked he'd like it to remain in a similar place, but maybe at his desk or bathtub instead.

Parks Board Game Review

1 year 2 months ago

America is justly proud of its remaining areas of untamed wilderness, much of which is preserved through its national parks system. It’s been an inspiration to both artists and board game designers down the years, the latter giving us titles as diverse as hobby fare Cascadia to the much more mainstream National Parks-Opoly. But 2019's PARKS aims to give you the best of both worlds with some accessible tactical play married to art from the 59 Parks print series.

What’s in the Box

The stylized waterfall art of the PARKS box cover is a lovely piece of work, but it doesn’t prepare you for the treasures inside. Beneath the rules booklet, there are two custom trays of wooden components, suns and droplets, mountains and trees, all dyed in appealing pastel tones. There are also a number of brown wildlife tokens, each and every one cut to resemble a different animal.

The Thaumaturge, a New 'Story-Rich' RPG, Announced by Frostpunk and Witcher 1 Remake Developers

1 year 2 months ago

The Thaumaturge, a mystical new story-rich turn-based RPG from 11 bit studios (Frostpunk) and Fool's Theory (The Witcher 1 Remake) set in early-20th-century Warsaw, has been announced for PC. No release window has been given as of yet.

"Thaumaturge" refers to the ancient Greek word for one who performs supernatural events. So, yes, you can expect supernatural stuff to happen in this new isometric RPG. It promises "a unique take on combat, character development features, and investigation mechanics, touching upon the complex theme of inner demons." Watch the announcement trailer above and check out the first screenshots in the gallery below.

“The Thaumaturge revolves around the idea of demons both on physical and metaphorical layers, Fool’s Theory Design Director, Karolina Kuzia-Rokosz. “After all, it’s a game infused with 11 bit studios’ philosophy of meaningful entertainment. Its theme is evoked in different areas of the game with gameplay mechanics or narrative aspects being only a part of those.”

In The Thaumaturge, beings called Salutors exist between the real world and the shadows, and only the Thaumaturges can perceive the Salutors. 11 bit studios and Fool's Theory say "Salutors allow Thaumaturges to manipulate humans, preying on their secrets and insecurities, bending one’s will to their own needs while changing the world surrounding them."

We'll have more on The Thaumaturge after its appearance at the Game Developers Conference next month in San Francisco.

The Outer Worlds: Spacer's Choice Edition Announced for PS5, Xbox Series X/S, and PC

1 year 2 months ago

The Outer Worlds: Spacer's Choice Edition has officially been announced and will be bringing an improved version of the sci-fi RPG to PS5, Xbox Series X/S, and PC on March 7, 2023.

The Outer Worlds, which was developed by Fallout: New Vegas' Obsidian Entertainment, was first released in 2019 and brought players to a colony at the edge of the galaxy that has been overrun by corporations. Much like a Fallout game, players make choices, get into epic gun combat, interact with factions, journey alongside companions, and much more.

The Outer Worlds: Spacer's Choice Edition packages the base game and both DLCs - Murder on Eridanos and Peril of Gorgon - and comes with "higher resolution graphics, a dynamic weather system, overhauled lighting and environments, improved performance and load times, enhanced details on characters, an increased level cap, and much more."

If players already own The Outer Worlds and its DLCs for Xbox One, PS4, or PC, they can upgrade to the Spacer's Choice Edition on the same console of PC Store (if applicable) for $9.99. If you'd like to simply buy the game, it will cost $59.99.

In our review of The Outer Worlds, we said, "Obsidian has found its own path in the space between Bethesda and BioWare, and it’s a great one. And considering that new RPGs from either of those influential developers are still years away, this game couldn’t have been timed any better.

Announced during February's Pokémon Presents event, The Hidden Treasure of Area Zero expansion will feature two separate DLCs: The Teal Mask (launching fall 2023) and The Indigo Disk (launching winter 2023).

"In The Teal Mask, players will be chosen to take part in a school trip that is held each year in collaboration with another school. They’ll be taken to the land of Kitakami, where a great mountain towers over the land and the people live at its base," reads a plot synopsis.

"It is a place of tranquil natural expanses, featuring rice paddies and apple orchards. The trip seems to coincide with a festival regularly held in the village in Kitakami during this season, so the village is bustling with various street vendors and stalls. Players will meet new friends and Pokémon as they unravel the mysteries behind the folktales that have been passed down in this land."

Crime Boss: Rockay City Preview: Did Somebody Order Some Cheese With Their Crime?

1 year 2 months ago

Crime Boss: Rockay City was one of the bigger surprises to come out of The Game Awards last year: a brand new video game property from a relatively unknown studio, featuring a star-studded cast of relatively well-known actors – with a hard release date just a few months away, no less! The slick, colorful reveal trailer definitely turned some heads, but it also raised some eyebrows, since it focused more on who is in the game rather than what you’ll actually be doing.

After an hour and a half of hands-on time with Crime Boss: Rockay City, I now have a much clearer idea of what it actually is, but I also came away even more skeptical that it can actually achieve what it’s setting out to do.

Crime Boss is fundamentally a first-person shooter, but it aspires to be an ‘organized crime game,’ meaning stealth, strategy, and careful preparation will likely yield more favorable results than going in guns blazing. The obvious comparison to make is to Payday, the co-op bank heist series, but my time with it felt more like Left 4 Dead.

Three modes will be included at launch. There’s Baker’s Battle, the single-player campaign where players take control of Michael Madsen’s character Travis Baker and help him become the titular crime boss of the eponymous Rockay City. There’s also Crime Time, which consists of quick heists that can be played alone or cooperatively. Those earn you quick cash to unlock new crew members, gear, or contracts.

This Cryptic Fortnite Tweet Has Been Solved with ChatGPT

1 year 2 months ago

The most recent tweet from the @FortniteStatus Twitter account regarding downtime for update v23.50 included the developers doing some cryptography with a mysterious string of numbers. As recently announced, there is only a little over a week left of Fortnite Chapter 4 Season 1, so this is the perfect time for Epic Games to start teasing what might be next for the game, as hasn’t yet been word on if there will be a finale event.

As fans have been racking their brains over what the numbers could possibly symbolize (they definitely aren’t the numbers from the TV show Lost), an answer came from a very unlikely source: ChatGPT. That’s right, the AI chatbot has solved the puzzle, though the answer should’ve been obvious. Dataminer @HYPEX is the one who first posted the response from ChatGPT.

Destiny 2: Lightfall Reveals Its New Raid and Confirms Release Timing

1 year 2 months ago

Just a day shy of the release of Lightfall, Destiny 2’s next major expansion, developer Bungie took to Twitter to unveil the title of its upcoming raid content and reiterate its release timing. The raid itself is titled The Root of Nightmares and will go live on March 10, 2023 at 9 AM PST / 12 PM EST.

This means its addition will take place about ten days after the release of the expansion proper, which should allow players the chance to experience the story and prepare themselves for it without feeling the need to rush. The tweet also included a screenshot of a group of guardians standing at the raid’s entrance to tease players with what might be waiting for them within.

Moreover, the tweet also reminds players that Contest Mode will be activated for the first 48 hours of the raid’s release—rather than the traditional 24 hours—to ensure an even playing field among everyone challenging the DLC upon its initial release.

It’s also worth remembering that itemization will function a bit differently in this Lightfall raid as well, particularly when it comes to Adept weapons, which will be much stronger than they’ve been up to this point.

Atomic Heart is Robot Rocking It on Game Pass, & Only One Game Is More Played on Xbox

1 year 2 months ago

Since its release on Feb. 21, indie FPS Atomic Heart has been making its mark on Game Pass. In a recent tweet from industry sales analyst BenjiSales, it was revealed that the debut effort from developer Mundfish had claimed top three for all platforms available on the service; second in cloud downloads, and third on console and PC, respectively.

Perhaps to the surprise of nobody, the one single player game that is still king of the hill on Xbox remains Hogwarts Legacy. It will take quite the effort or at least a little more time for any contender to knock the wizarding world from its lofty perch.

With its content and themes, Atomic Heart was bound to catch some buzz on the gaming scene. These early returns are quite encouraging, and perhaps indicative of the demand for someone to fill the BioShock-esque void.

Destiny 2 Nerfs a Dominant Titan PvE Exotic While Its Warlock Counterpart Remains Untouched

1 year 2 months ago

Bungie has officially rolled out its latest round of fixes for Destiny 2, as the 7.0.0.1 update is officially live. As always, the patch notes for the newest update features plenty of quality of life and minor bug fixes that fans may not even notice.

However, if you’re a Titan player, there’s definitely a section of the notes that will stick out to you, especially since Warlocks remain unaffected by comparison. To be exact, it’s the section regarding the Exotic known as Heart of Inmost Light:

  • Heart of Inmost Light: Reduced duration of the empowered ability buffs in PvE to five seconds (down from 10 seconds). Reduced bonus class ability regeneration while empowered to +25% per stack in both PvE and PvP (down from +150% and +38%, respectively).
    • This change is intended to decrease how easy it is to get and maintain a 2x empowerment bonus in PvE, as well as reduce the total amount of bonus ability energy provided. The goal is for Heart of Inmost light to remain strong in ability-focused builds, while giving room for other Exotics to shine as well.

If you’ve played Destiny 2’s endgame as a Titan, then you know just how powerful this Exotic has been when playing PvE. As such, it makes a bit of sense that it’s getting balanced, and a lot of people saw it coming.

Heart of Inmost Light wasn’t the only Exotic many thought would get the hammer, though, as the Starfire Protocol for Warlocks has also dominated the PvE endgame by a large margin compared to everything else. Pretty much everyone and their mother assumed a nerf was coming for this one too when Lightfall drops, but, as it turns out, only Titans are the only ones that suffer getting nerfed, and Warlock status quo remains the same.

Destiny 2 Update 7.0.0.1 Alleviates an Annoying Mechanic With Just the Push of a Button

1 year 2 months ago

On Feb. 27, 2023, Bungie rolled out its latest round of patch notes for Destiny 2 in the 7.0.0.1. As always, there were plenty of bugs and small quality-of-life issues that were resolved, but there were also some notable changes to gameplay mechanics as well.

Even though it’s not necessarily a game-changer, and isn’t something that casual players are likely to notice, one such change comes regarding the way Destiny 2 players go about unlocking Artifact perks. Now, instead of having to hold down a button for one second to unlock an Artifact perk, you’ll simply be able to use a single button press.

Other helpful touches include the ability to stun Champions even when they’re in animation, as well as higher stats for armor pieces that drop in Master difficulty while playing Grasp of Avarice, Duality, and Spire of the Watcher.

Dead Space Remake Faithfully Recreates The Original Game’s Most Iconic Trailer

1 year 2 months ago

Motive Studio’s remake of Dead Space has delivered another fitting homage to the original game with its own suitably twisted variation of the iconic ‘Lullaby’ trailer.

It’s been something of a series tradition for each Dead Space game to feature a trailer with a haunting rendition of a child’s lullaby juxtaposed with the grisly scenes of death and mayhem to be expected in EA’s survival horror series. The Dead Space remake ‘Lullaby’ trailer is almost a shot-for-shot remake of the trailer for the original game complete with the bone-chilling vocals featured in the eerie cover of ‘Twinkle Twinkle Little Star’.

The original trailer for the game is considered to be iconic for fans of the series for showcasing the sheer level of dread that players experienced in the game as well as establishing the game’s grim dark tone. The new Remake version not only has the same effect as the original did 15 years ago but also further showcases the love Motive Studios very clearly has for the series.

8 Shoujo Anime You Won’t Help But Fall in Love With

When it comes to shoujo anime, there are a ridiculous amount of great titles to watch. Shoujo anime is any anime that’s geared toward teenage girls and young women, so it spans a variety of genres (although many of them include romance even if they’re not strictly romance anime). However, for most shoujo lovers, there are several that stand out among them all. Here are the best shoujo anime of all time in no particular order.

Fruits Basket

No best Shoujo anime list would be complete without Fruits Basket. The anime was originally released in 2001 but never made it past a single season and included a few issues that would’ve made it hard to adapt after the manga was completed. However, in 2019, the series was redone and complete, topping the charts in the years the three seasons were released.

Pokemon Sleep Arrives This Year, with a Pokemon GO Plus Plus Device… No, That Is Not a Typo

1 year 2 months ago

A new mobile Pokemon title is on the way, and it involves sleeping! Brought to light by the footage showcased during the annual Pokemon Presents event, the aptly titled Pokemon Sleep is a new mobile game that hopes to encourage better nighttime habits/patterns alongside an intuitive way to enhance your Pokemon Go activities. While the game itself doesn’t have a firm release date, its tentative release is this summer on both Android and IOS mobile platforms.

The game itself centers around an island, with Snorlax being the would be the centerpiece. As players get more sleep, they attract certain Pokemon that seemingly mimic the players’ sleep patterns. More specifically, each of the three starting Pokemon from the original games showcases the sleep players may be categorized as getting. For example, dosing is synonymous with Bulbasaur, Snoozing is attached to Charmander, and Slumbering to Squirtle respectively.

One of the most intriguing things is that certain obscure sleep habits seem to attract Pokemon sleeping in unique positions. At the end of the day, players will be essentially sleeping and receiving rewards in the form of finding all these different styles/associated Pokemon.

Pokemon Presents Details Gimighoul in Pokemon GO & New Features

1 year 2 months ago

The Pokemon Day Pokemon Presents stream brought tons of new information about the Pokemon GO Plus + device that can be used with GO. On top of that, it looks like Pokemon GO will now be able to connect with Scarlet and Violet to get different forms of Vivillion and one other previous uncatchable golden creature.

First off, it was announced that the Pokemon GO Plus + device is back on track for launch to work with Pokemon Sleep and GO. It works just like the Poke Ball and the original Plus device. Additionally, anyone who connects a Plus + device to their GO game will receive a set of Special Research tasks that will let them catch a Snorlax wearing a sleeping cap.

After that, it was announced that Scarlet and Violet on the switch now support connection with Pokemon GO. There are a few different things that can be done with this game linking. First, players will be able to send the postcards they get from Pokemon GO to the Switch games to find different forms of Vivillion in Scarlet and Violet. Each real-world location corresponds to a different type of Vivillion in the console games.

The other benefit of connecting the games is that players who use this function will get to catch Gimighoul in their roaming form in Pokemon GO. This is the first time that this species will be catchable in this form in any Pokemon game.

It was also mentioned that Gimighoul can be evolved into Gholdengo in Pokemon GO by using 999 Gimighoul Coins. Just like with the Mystery Box that featured Meltan, there’s a special item called the Coin Bag that lets players encounter roaming GImighoul in GO. It can be used once per day to encounter Gimighoul just like using Incense.

The event is focused on the 3.5-year anniversary and the new sync pairs feature some of the best trainers in the Galar region.

The new event doesn’t have a set name but features champion sync pairs from six different regions. The champions included are Cynthia with Garchomp, Lance with Dragonite, Alder with Volcarona, Iris with Hydreigon, Diantha with Mega Gardevoir, and Steven with Metagross.

The other announcement from today featured Galar region Neo Champions. This means Leon and Charizard are making their return, but there are also three more Galarian sync pairs coming to the game, each with their own Galarian form legendary bird.

Hop is dressed up like his big brother, Leon, and is paired with the Fighting/Flying Galarian Zapdos. Beded is dressed up in an outfit reminiscent of his mentor, Opal, and is paired with the Psychic/Flying Galarian Articuno. Marnie wraps things up wearing a pink and black dress that matches the color scheme of her partner Pokemon, the Dark/Flying Galarian Moltres.

On top of that, until Mar. 18, players can simply sign in 10 different days to receive a daily 10-pair ticket scout for free. That means you’ll be able to do 100 scouts as long as you sign in 10 times between now and Mar. 18. On top of that, players who log in between now and Mar. 27 will receive 3000 free gems.

Pokemon Masters EX is a free-to-play game available on Android via the Play Store and iOS via the App Store.
