1 year 6 months ago

Welcome to the latest edition of the Giant Bomb Community Spotlight! I, @zombiepie, am once again honored to be your host as we look back on the best community-created works from the previous week.

With the site making a full recovery from the Great Giant Bombathon and the staff making the long journey back to their homes, things are finally getting "back to normal" with the usual programming populating the site.

Before we transition into the site-related news, I first want to issue a huge congratulation to a couple of Giant Bomb members. Over on Twitter, @MoonRei_Razing got married to another Giant Bomb fan and even ended up getting a tattoo in commemoration of all the memories the site and its many staff members have provided them. Please join me in wishing them and their partner a very happy marriage and a wonderful journey in the next stage of their lives.

Silent Hill F Will Be Written by When They Cry Writer

1 year 6 months ago

silent hill f

Konami has released a new Silent Hill game on the horizon during its Silent Hill transmission livestream: Silent Hill F. Ryukishi07, the creator of the When They Cry sound novel series of games, will be the writer. Taiwan-based studio Neobards Entertainment will develop the game, with Motoi Okamoto as the producer, and "kera" as the creature and character designer.

The trailer does not contain any gameplay footage, which implies that the game is still in the early development stage. However, it does give a good idea as to the general atmosphere that the game will have. It features a much more Japanese-inspired setting than the American aesthetic of the Silent Hill series. For example, a Japanese doll is prominent in the trailer, and the setting appears to be a rural shopping district in the 1960s. Plants and flowers are also key symbols for the game.

You can watch the trailer for Silent Hill F below. As a warning, there is some footage that those with trypophobia may find upsetting at around 1:12.

Silent Hill: Ascension Promises an Interactive Series in 2023

1 year 6 months ago

Silent Hill Ascension

Konami went all-out with new Silent Hill announcements during its livestream, and Silent Hill: Ascension might be one of the more unique takes on the series so far. It promises to blend community, live storytelling, and interactive mechanics. It's being produced by four companies: Genvid, which specializes in "Massively Interactive Live Events", Bad Robot Games, the game arm of the production company led by Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker Director J.J. Abrams, Behaviour Studios, developers of Dead by Daylight, and DJ2, which helped adapt the Sonic the Hedgehog films.

Check out the teaser trailer for Silent Hill: Ascension below.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=p7_QDCTX-Vo

The teaser shows brief shots of a monster, along with closeups of chat messages, emphasizing the multiplayer, community-led aspect of the game. Some of the chat messages tell "Amina", a character in the story, to "Run!". The teaser promised that the project would go live in 2023. During the stream, Genvid CEO Jacob Navok spoke of the appeal of "communal fear" that fans can watch together, and interact with en masse. Fan interactions with the story as it broadcasts live can change the story, with the outcomes becoming set in "canon", with "no reset button".

Silent Hill: Townfall Coming From Observation Developers

1 year 6 months ago

Silent Hill Townfall

More than just the Silent Hill 2 remake was on display at Konami's Silent Hill transmission livestream. Three entirely new Silent Hill-related games are also in development. One of them is Silent Hill: Townfall. It's being developed by No Code, which created Stories Untold and Observation, alongside Annapurna Interactive, which published games like Outer Wilds and Sayonara Wild Hearts. Konami aired a teaser for the new title during the stream.

Check it out below.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_wWF_TKSvzI

The Silent Hill: Townfall teaser doesn't show off gameplay footage, but does establish a mood. It begins with a monologue by a man talking to someone, saying the person he's talking to is "here to be punished". A shot of a portable television shows off various disturbing images and brief glimpses of some kind of monster, before resolving onto a blood-red wave crashing onto a beach.

A video message from No Code Creative Director John McKellan recounted memories of playing the original Silent Hill, and noted how much of an influence the series has been on the developers at No Code and Annapurna. He mentioned the focus of their own titles, Stories Untold and Observation, on "deep psychological horror," traits they want to use in weaving the narrative of Silent Hill: Townfall.

Return to Silent Hill Live-Action Film is in Production

1 year 6 months ago

Return to Silent Hill

A third live-action film adaptation of Silent Hill is coming, and it's coming from Christophe Gans, who directed the first Silent Hill movie. It's called Return to Silent Hill, and was announced alongside a remake of Silent Hill 2 during Konami's Silent Hill Transmission livestream event.

Konami aired a featurette to promote the Return to Silent Hill movie, featuring Gans himself and producer Victor Hadida.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=j_FOVN-UkEI

The featurette was light on concrete details, but it seems that Return to Silent Hill will take its main inspiration from Silent Hill 2. It'll also feature a man finding his wife, named Mary, in the iconic town. Gans spoke of the challenges of adapting "the language of the game" to the needs of cinematic storytelling. Though it's the third Silent Hill movie, it appears to be more connected to the first film than Silent Hill: Revelations, which was not directed by Gans. Gans also mentioned that Pyramid Head will make an appearance in the movie, but also that other familiar monsters will show up and make a "new impact".

Gans and Hadida also showed off concept art and snippets of storyboards from the film, and spoke on how they want to keep the story and "respect" at the core of the film, even as they acknowledge that "everything has changed" in the intervening 15 years. As such, "bringing something new" is part of the goal.

Konami Announces Silent Hill 2 Remake is in Development

1 year 6 months ago

Silent Hill 2 Remake

Konami has officially confirmed what rumors had hinted for some time: Observer and The Medium developer Bloober Team is developing a remake of Silent Hill 2. A teaser trailer for the project opened the company's Silent Hill Transmission livestream event. On consoles the game will be exclusive to the PS5 for at least 12 months, though it will also release on PC.

Check out the Silent Hill 2 remake teaser trailer below.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8qPdInnvMzg

The trailer features Silent Hill 2 protagonist James Sunderland walking around the fog-choked town of Silent Hill in search of his wife, Mary. Also sighted are monsters like the writhing nurses and Pyramid Head.

Though in development by Bloober Team, the remake project involves Masahiro Ito, who served as art director on the original version of the game. According to Ito, Konami approached him about participating in the remake three years ago, dating the Silent Hill 2 remake to as early as 2019. Composer Akira Yamaoka is also involved. He said that the remake will have a "new musical style", and that they hope to balance pleasing existing fans with drawing in new ones.

Members of Bloober Team also delivered a brief presentation to talk up the effort, and spoke of recreating what made Silent Hill 2 so well-regarded, while still providing some modernizations. Some behind-the-scenes footage showed off ongoing performance capture work.

The Sims 4 Goes Free-to-Play, New Project Rene Title Teased

1 year 6 months ago

the sims 4 project rene

The Sims developer Maxis is working on what it's calling "the next-generation Sims game and creative platform". Its working title is Project Rene. Based on the details released during EA's "Behind the Sims Summit" stream event on October 18, 2022, the game is likely to be the next entry in the mainline Sims series. However, rather than being called The Sims 5 (or something similar), it being in the early stages of development precludes official confirmation beyond "Project Rene". It's a similar situation to when The Sims 4 was first being teased. At the time, EA only referred to that game as Project Olympus before formally confirming that it was The Sims 4 later on.

Warhammer 40,000: Darktide Captures the 40k Spirit in its Closed Beta

1 year 6 months ago

Warhammer 40,000 Darktide

The Warhammer 40,000 franchise is well-known for its absurd, maximalist scale. It takes place tens of thousands of years in "the grim darkness of the far future, where there is only war". A galaxy-spanning fascist empire ruled by a living corpse wars endlessly against equally unpleasant hordes of aliens, heretics, and mutants. Fatshark's new gameWarhammer 40,000: Darktide, manages to capture this sense of vastness not by expanding a player's perspective, but by reducing its scope. You're not witnessing the battles of massive armies, but struggling to stay alive against the hordes with three buddies at your side.

Those acquainted with Fatshark's work on the Warhammer: Vermintide games should find Darktide familiar. Like the two titles set in the Warhammer Fantasy universe, Warhammer 40,000: Darktide is a four-player co-op experience pitting a quartet of players against hordes of enemies. The main difference is the presence of guns: Every character has a ranged weapon drawn from Warhammer 40k's deep arsenal of crazy sci-fi-tinged firearms. But don't call it a shooter! Everyone's got guns, but when the crowds close in, out comes a wicked array of melee weapons, ranging from spiked pipes and sharpened trench shovels to psychic swords and Thunder Hammers. This "hybrid combat" approach pretty much ensures that there's a time and a place for either.

Digimon World Next Order Will Come Out on Switch in 2023

1 year 6 months ago

digimon world next 0rder order switch

The Nintendo Switch version of Digimon World -Next Order- International Edition (stylized as 0rder instead of Order) will come out on February 22, 2023 in Japan. The game first launched on PS Vita in 2016, then launched for PS4 globally in 2017. In Japan the PS4 version was called the International Edition. [Thanks, ryokutya2089!]

Some new elements to the Switch version of Digimon World -Next Order- International Edition will include a new Beginner Mode, as well as the option to run. Bandai Namco didn't confirm if the new additions will be retroactively added to the existing PS4 versions of the game. Bandai has also not made any official statements regarding a western release of the Switch edition.

Like other Digimon World games, it is an open-world RPG in which you command a Digimon partner. You can also fuse two Digimon together through ExE Evolution to make a stronger one. One of Next Order's innovations was the addition of a second companion, for a total of two Digimon in combat. Players would also feed, raise, and train their Digimon to increase their battle strength. The plot of the game focuses on your effort to save the Digital World from Machinedramons wreaking havoc. Over 200 Digimon from across the franchise are featured. So far, aside from Beginner Mode and running, the Switch port does not have any key differences from the previous versions.

Konami Announces Silent Hill 2 Remake, Silent Hill F, A New Movie, And More

1 year 6 months ago

Konami shared a number of Silent Hill announcements today as part of its Silent Hill Transmission presentation confirming many longstanding rumors, as well as putting others to bed.

Arguably the biggest news from the presentation is that Bloober Team, the developer behind The Medium and other horror games, is remaking Silent Hill 2. The trailer for the game showed scenes from the iconic game with all-new visuals. The Silent Hill 2 remake is coming to PC via Steam and will be a PlayStation 5 console exclusive for at least a year after launch.

Konami followed up with Silent Hill Townfall, a new game from developer No Code, the creators of Observation and Stories Untold. The teaser shared for the game offered little in the way of game details, but the implication is that it will be something different for Silent Hill.

Christophe Gans, the director of the original 2006 Silent Hill movie, is returning to create a new Silent Hill film titled Return to Silent Hill. Gans appeared during the presentation to talk about how the movie will be an adaptation of Silent Hill 2. Filming and casting are still in the works, but Gans did have a handful of concept art to share.

Warner Bros. Games announces Mortal Kombat: Onslaught, a Mobile-Exclusive RPG

1 year 6 months ago

Text reads "Mortal Kombat: Onslaught." Around it, Scorpion, Sub-Zero, and other Mortal Kombat characters face off.

Warner Bros. Games has announced Mortal Kombat: Onslaught, a mobile-exclusive Mortal Kombat experience. The game is described as a collection role-playing game where players build a roster of fighters from the Mortal Kombat universe and “unleash them in massive real-time group battles.” It’s more than just battles, though – Onslaught is also said to feature a cinematic story experience where fighters have to defeat a “dark and dangerous threat.”

This is not the first time Mortal Kombat has appeared on a mobile device. Mortal Kombat Mobile was released in 2015 alongside Mortal Kombat X and eventually adapted characters and features from Mortal Kombat 11 as well. Mortal Kombat Mobile has been downloaded over 150 million times since its launch, so it’s no wonder WB Games wants to release more games from the franchise.

October 8 marked the series’ 30th anniversary, and Mortal Kombat: Onslaught seems to be a celebration of that. Not only is it the newest mobile game in the series, but it’s also the most recent title since the release of Mortal Kombat 11 Ultimate in 2020. As far as the future of the series is concerned outside of the mobile market, Netherrealm has been pretty quiet lately. Outside of our interview with franchise co-creator Ed Boon where he said we'd have to wait a little longer, the most recent news we’ve received has been this tweet:

When it was first announced, PlayStation didn't reveal too much about its take on the Xbox Elite Series controller type, but it was clear that it was a "pro" version of the DualSense controller, aimed at PS5 enthusiasts. A Plague Tale Requiem Review Game Informer

Going into A Plague Tale: Requiem, developer Asobo Studio’s follow-up to 2019’s A Plague Tale: Innocence, I was prepared for the usual jump in quality and scale that most sequels embrace. I underestimated just how significant that leap would be, though. Calling Requiem a standard sequel is a disservice; Asobo has created a Plague Tale epic. It feels Odyssean in scope and storytelling prowess. Although much of it came together for me by the end of my 20-plus hour journey through medieval France, the game feels strained by its sheer size, especially in its first half. Still, I’m more impressed by Requiem’s boldness and near across-the-board improvements than not.

Mario + Rabbids Sparks Of Hope – Review In Progress

1 year 6 months ago

Mario + Rabbids Sparks of Hope

Mario + Rabbids Sparks of Hope doesn’t release until Thursday, October 20, but the review embargo lifts today. However, I’m still journeying through Mario’s latest tactical crossover, so I’m not ready to give a full verdict as of yet. In the meantime, however, here are some impressions based on roughly the first half of the game.

As a fan of Kingdom Battle, I’ve enjoyed what I’ve played of Sparks of Hope. It retains the core strategic gameplay of the original, so if you liked the first game, you’ll probably enjoy this as well. Removing the grid and having freedom of movement feels liberating, however, and is one of the big game-changers. It's interesting because this doesn't change my approach to playing a turn-based tactics game. Heroes still have limited ranges and can’t move after attacking. But controlling heroes as I would in a regular third-person game feels better and adds flexibility in positioning while, potentially, making it more inviting to non-tactics fans. I also like how Ubisoft Milan applied this philosophy to encounter and stage design. Certain enemies and level hazards operate in real-time; a lit bob-omb explodes in seconds regardless of turn order, and I love that I can avoid certain dangers by simply running out of the way instead of planning steps ahead to do so.

Hellena Taylor Says Bayonetta 3 Absence Due To "Immoral" Compensation, Calls For Fans To Boycott The Game

1 year 6 months ago

Hellena Taylor Bayonetta 3

Update - October 17: Jennifer Hale has responded to Hellena Taylor's scathing claims against Platinum Games that Taylor declined to perform in Bayonetta 3 due to unfair compensation from the studio and her subsequent call for a boycott of the game. Hale, who is the new voice of Bayonetta in the game, posted the following statement on Twitter

With regard to Bayonetta 3 As a longtime member of the voice acting community, I support every actor's right to be paid well and have advocated consistently for this for years. Anyone who knows me, or has followed my career, will know that I have great respect for my peers, and I am an advocate for all members of the community. I am under NDA and am not at liberty to speak regarding this situation. My reputation speaks for itself. I sincerely ask that everyone keep in mind that this game has been created by an entire team of hard-working, dedicated people and I hope everyone will keep an open mind about what they've created. Finally, I hope that everyone involved may resolve their differences in an amicable and respectful way. With love and respect to you all, Jennifer Hale
