Mudrunner's filthy motoring is free on the Epic Games Store this week

3 years 5 months ago

Having long-since dropped the “Spintires” part of its name, mucky motorist Mudrunner is now dropping its price tag. Temporarily, at least. Saber Interactive’s trudging off-roader is this week’s free game over on the Epic Games Store, letting you wrestle your jeep of choice through the hostile wilderness all the way ’til next Thursday, at which point it’ll be replaced by indie platformer Cave Story +.

Microsoft Flight Simulator's next update plots a course for the UK

3 years 5 months ago

See that blurry coastal mess up there? That’s North Berwick, my one-time childhood home and the first stop in my jaunt across Microsoft Flight Simulator‘s painstakingly thorough recreation of planet Earth. It’s been done dirty, I reckon, but that may be about to change. The next World Update for Asobo’s jet-setter is heading to the UK, sprucing up ol’ Britannia with improved landmarks, landscape resolution and plenty of sightseeing spots sometime next January.

Bum-Bo's free DLC is back on track after a pretty crap year

3 years 5 months ago

We haven’t heard from deckbuilding Isaac spin-off The Legend Of Bum-bo in a while, have we? After launching in a shaky state last year, the cardboard sewer-crawler creators went silent. Finally speaking this week, creator Edmund McMillen explained that the team have had a particularly rocky time with 2020 – and that hopefully, things have settled long enough to finally get back on track on that free DLC promised way back when.

Dell’s 240Hz Alienware monitors have always been firm (if rather expensive) favourites here at RPS, but one of their US “door buster” [cms-block] deals has finally brought their excellent AW2518HF down to just $250 – that’s a saving of over 50% off its original price (not to mention $100 cheaper than what you’ll find on Amazon at the moment) and a great deal for those after a brilliant 240Hz G-Sync Compatible screen.

How do you play Sea Of Thieves with no sight? You steer the ship

3 years 5 months ago

Some Sea Of Thieves folks on a little boat doing a quest.

We tend to talk about games as very visual experiences because, for most, they are. But, for some, there are more important things than framerates and 4K resolutions – namely, actually being able to play games in the first place. I spoke to Sightless Kombat, an accessibility consultant and “gamer without sight”, who told me how far games still have to come before they’re fully accessible for players like him.

So, how on earth does someone with no sight play games? The answer is a lot less complicated than you might think.

This Teardown modder wants to help you smash up the real world

A fishing boat crashes into a line of floating wooden shacks.

Outside of Teardown, most of us will never know the thrill of bombing industrial lots or driving a dump-truck into a billionaire’s mansion. But while I won’t be taking a sledgehammer to my office anytime soon, I can rest easy in the knowledge that I may soon be breaking it down on my desktop – with one programmer showing off a delightfully destructive montage of real-world wreckage inside Tuxedo Labs’ digital smashing yards.

WD's fastest 1TB NVMe SSD drops to £100 for Black Friday

3 years 5 months ago

A top down view of the WD Black SN750 NVMe SSD.

The [cms-block] have been positively roasting so far this week, particularly when it comes to WD’s NVMe drives. First we saw huge discounts on their stonkingly good Blue SN550 drive, and now Amazon and Ebuyer have been doing battle over the 1TB Black SN750, dropping prices to £100 to beat its previous Prime Day deal of £120. As such, this is the cheapest this premium NVMe drive has ever been, and a much better buy than the £151 Samsung 970 Evo Plus.

Podcast episode 119: the fashion in games special

3 years 5 months ago

A Paolumu from Monster Hunter: World, which is a kind of white furry bat that can inflate itself, like a flying pufferfish. It can be turned into a lovely coat.

Today we hit the yearly milestone of deciding it was finally cold enough to turn the heating on. You hold out as long as you can, obviously. Not made of money. Perhaps we could have lasted longer if we’d had very fashionable coats made out of the skin of a rare bat monster, such as you can hunt and kill in Monster Hunter: World.

Yes, from this thrilling segue you’ll now be aware that this week’s episode of The Electronic Wireless Show is all about fashion in games. We talk about Dark Souls, we talk about Hitman, we talk about Fable. All the hits! Since Nate is regrettably still bust, it was just me and Matthew again, but we fill the time by discussing peacocks. Plus! The second instalment in the ConeGate Conspiracy. Will Matthew be able to secure a parking space? Will the scaffolding go up okay? Catch up today, and stay tuned for a further update next week.

MechWarrior 5 DLC delayed to avoid Cyberpunk 2077

3 years 5 months ago

A mech stompin' and shootin' in a screenshot from MechWarrior 5's Heroes Of The Inner Sphere DLC.

When CD Projekt Red announce a Cyberpunk 2077 release date, they plant a neon battle banner on the calendar and shouting “FIGHT ME, COWARDS” at other developers. Most, sensibly, decline to. The makers of MechWarrior 5: Mercenaries had planned to launch its first DLC on December 10th but, well, that’s the date Cyberpunk is now due. So rather than fight a colossal mech built of neon tubing, sheet glass, and garish merch, Piranha Games have decided to delay Heroes Of The Inner Sphere. It’s now due in spring 2021 – assuming Cyberpunk 2077 is not delayed again.

Baldur's Gate 3's next patch will make you start a new save

3 years 5 months ago

A close up screen shot of Astarion the rogue from Baldur's Gate 3. He is also very smug, and I have no time for him.

A new early access update is headed to Baldur’s Gate 3 soon, and be warned: it will break save file compatibility, requiring players to start a new save to play with the patch. You will be able to revert to the previous version of the game to continue an existing save, mind, just without any of the newness. Yeah it’s a hassle but it’s to be expected when playing an unfinished game in early access, really.

In the US, that’s the same as it was during Prime Day last month, but in the UK it’s gone that bit further, beating its Prime Day price by another £13. Call Of Duty: Black Ops Cold War multiplayer review

3 years 5 months ago

I've selected my operator, a bloke called Beck.

It’s that time again where we spin 180 degrees away from Infinity Ward, turn to Treyarch, and see what type of Call Of Duty they’ll slide into our hands. I expected to say “Oh titanic megacorporation, thank you so much for the shooty bang bang”, while stifling a massive yawn, but honestly, I’m buzzed off Call Of Duty: Black Ops Cold War’s multiplayer offerings. It’s reawakened my post-dinner excitement to get online with The Boys™ that’s lain dormant since we burned ourselves out on Warzone. I just wonder how long this feeling will last.

There have been some great [cms-block] this week so far, but this new £700 off deal from Ebuyer on one of Razer’s Blade Pro 17 laptops arguably tops the lot of them, if only because the sheer number of extra goodies you get with it effectively turns it into a full-on desktop replacement. Indeed, not only are you getting a powerful Core i7 processor and RTX 2070 Max-Q graphics chip to power its fancy 300Hz display, but you also get a mouse, keyboard and headset with it. Heck, they’re even throwing in a Razer water bottle, too, presumably so you can continue salivating over how much money you saved long after it’s arrived in your home.

At last, a game that is 100% about the aesthetic

3 years 5 months ago

A giant and imposing feminine face made of bits of floating metal looks upon the player character.Godfall

came out earlier this month. It is an ARPG looter-shooter, except the combat is almost entirely melee, so its a, uh, hacker-packer? But what it really is, is a game that is more dedicated to the look than any I have ever played. I’ve been diving in and out of it for the past couple of weeks and it is so beautiful, and so extreme and specific in its beauty, that I am charmed by it.

Godfall is epic, overwrought, sci-fi fantasy, so it’s a lame nerd’s idea of what is cool, and I love it. It’s like the video this guy would make for a DragonForce video if he had unlimited budget. It is Lord Of The Rings via a Monster Hunter fashion Tumblr. It is the “tears in rain” speech from Blade Runner, but as if that was performed by Jareth the Goblin King in his castle of M.C. Escher stairs, twirling a handful of magic crystal balls. Oh my god, oh my god, it is Jupiter Ascending. Did you see that? The movie where Channing Tatum is a literal dog soldier but with wings, and Douglas Booth tries to marry Mila Kunis who is the reincarnation of his dead mum? It’s that, it’s that it’s that.

SteelSeries' Black Friday deals are much better than Amazon

3 years 5 months ago

Like me, a deals maniac, SteelSeries have obviously caught the [cms-block] bug a wee bit early, because they’ve got some great member discounts on some of our favourite gaming mice, keyboards and headset picks – many of which beat the prices you’ll find on Amazon this week. They’re among some of the best [cms-block] and [cms-block] out there, and since ‘member’ here means ‘person who has signed up to their website for free’, you should probably take a look if you’re in the market for clicky-clacks or speaky-hears.

There are some not-insignificant reductions on some of SteelSeries’ most premium hardware, including £40 off the flashy Apex Pro keyboard. Plus, one of our favourite gaming mice, the Rival 310 is down to a dealstastic £35.

Square Enix to make working from home permanent

The pandemic has forced many companies to challenge their ideas about how they make games, especially about having everyone together in offices. Final Fantasy makers Square Enix shifted to working from home this year, and it’s gone so well that they’re choosing to open this up as a permanent option for many. They say this will let them increase flexibility and diversity, help with work-life balance, and ultimately be more creative. They expect 80% of employees will be working from home when this scheme launches next month. It’s pretty great to see such a prolific company being open to this.
