Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom Improves Cooking With a New Pot, Recipe Cards, and More

1 year 1 month ago

Cooking hearty, fulfilling, and occasionally dubious meals was an integral part of survival in The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild. Sure you could have skipped that feature entirely and just eaten 40 apples and a bag of raw meats every time your health was low after a time fight, but combining the right ingredients to cook a big custom meal that would boost your strength, stamina, and resistance to the elements was definitely a much smarter winning strategy.

Well, cooking is back in the upcoming sequel The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom and there are a few really cool new improvements to go with it.

Alien: Isolation’s Terrifying Introduction to the Perfect Predator - Art of the Level

1 year 1 month ago

Few video games capture the essence of their inspiration quite like Alien: Isolation. Creative Assembly’s 2014 survival horror looks as if it were made by the set designers of Ridley Scott’s movie themselves, such is the incredible attention to detail. But it’s the groundbreaking use of the xenomorph that makes Alien: Isolation such a triumph; this perfect organism is an engine for fear.

The game’s fifth mission, The Quarantine, marks the first moment in which the xenomorph actively hunts you through Sevastopol Station. Armed with little more than the iconic motion tracker, you must evade and escape cinema’s most terrifying predator. This is where Creative Assembly truly brought the Alien fantasy to life. But recreating the terror experienced by Ellen Ripley in the original film took more than authentic visuals and sound effects.

To find out how The Quarantine was made we spoke to two of the game’s developers about how Creative Assembly brought together astonishing AI, clever looping level design, and cutting edge lighting to inject pure terror into your first encounter with the alien.

The core of Alien: Isolation is a cat and mouse chase between your protagonist, Amanda Ripley, and the xenomorph. Prior games in the franchise depicted the aliens as cannon fodder for gung-ho Colonial Marines, but Creative Assembly looked to Ridley Scott’s tense original film, not James Cameron’s action-packed sequel, for inspiration. Much like in the 1979 horror classic, there’s just a single xenomorph in Alien: Isolation and you’re powerless to stop it. The only thing you can do is try to survive.

Totally Spies Is Being Revived on Cartoon Network and Max

1 year 1 month ago

Totally Spies! is being revived and headed straight to Cartoon Network and Max in 2024. French media company Banijay Kids & Family made the announcement in a press release today, confirming that Warner Bros. Discovery acquired the rights to the seventh season of the French-Canadian animated series.

The show centers around a trio of teenage girls — brainiac Sam, fashionable Clover, and clumsy Alex — who balance their high school lives in Beverly Hills and their jobs as secret agents for the World Organization of Human Protection (WOOHP), using new gadgets in every episode to get them out of whatever situation warrants them during their missions.

It's like the anime version of Charlie's Angels, except the girls actually see their boss instead of talking to him through a speaker box.

While later seasons of the original series saw the girls go off to college, the company said that Season 7 will be considered a reboot with the girls attending high school once again in a new city.

The UK's Activision Blizzard Decision is Tomorrow, And Signs Point to It Going in Xbox's Favor

1 year 1 month ago

Microsoft is gearing up to potentially overcome a significant hurdle in its acquisition of Activision Blizzard: the UK's Competition and Markets Authority (CMA).

The regulator, which works to reduce anti-competitive practices in the UK, had previously launched an investigation into the $69 billion deal, and released its provisional findings back in February. At the time, the CMA was concerned about a number of aspects of the deal including potential monopolization of the cloud gaming market, possible Xbox exclusivity of Call of Duty, and reduction of competition with PlayStation.

However, last month, the CMA released a statement saying one of its key concerns had been addressed, determining that if Xbox made Call of Duty exclusive, it would ultimately cost the company money. And in the last several days, multiple reports have emerged suggesting that the CMA is likely to approve the deal when it issues its ruling tomorrow.

The New York Post in particular says the deal has made "surprising progress" in both the UK and the EU recently thanks to Microsoft's promises to give both Sony and Nintendo access to Call of Duty long-term.

Tron: Identity Review

1 year 1 month ago

Despite its origins as a 1982 film about a video game-inspired world inside a computer, Disney’s Tron franchise doesn’t have the best track record when it comes to game adaptations in the post-arcade era. Bithell Games, the studio behind minimalist indie darlings like Thomas Was Alone and Volume, aims to change that with the release of its first collaboration with the house of mouse, Tron: Identity. Part visual novel, part hard-boiled detective story, Tron: Identity is a gorgeous new take on life on the Grid — even if its plot raises more questions than it answers.

For the uninitiated, Tron: Identity takes place in the Grid, a self-sustaining world inside of computers, where human-like “programs” fulfill their functions and serve the “user” (the person actually using the computer in the real world). The Grid was created by a programmer named Flynn, who’s been missing since the events of 2009’s Tron: Legacy. Flynn is referred to among programs as either an omnipotent, godlike being due to return any minute now or a myth, but he doesn’t appear in any way, nor do any other characters from the Tron movies. Tron: Identity is an entirely new story that builds on the franchise’s foundation and reveals yet another facet of life on the Grid.

Diablo 4: Here's How Long It Takes to Reach Level 100

1 year 1 month ago

Diablo 4 associate game director Joseph Piepiora has revealed that it will take over 150 hours to grind to level 100 in the upcoming action role playing game.

“Reaching level 100 will take 150+ hours for the average player experience,” replied Piepiora to a fan on Twitter, confirming the inevitable and significant time sink that Diablo 4 will represent when it launches on June 6 later this year.

Earlier this month the developer also revealed that it would take around 80 hours to complete each season’s battle pass, which will feature both a free, and paid premium track featuring more cosmetic rewards.

This isn’t the first time that a brief social media reply has imparted significant information about Diablo 4. Recently, the game’s general manager Rod Furgusson let slip in a Twitter reply that there were “no plans at the moment” to include the popular map overlay function in the game at launch.

Similarly, players found out that characters who fall in the PvP areas known as the Fields of Hatred will face permanent deletion on hardcore mode, when the game’s Global Community Director Adam Fletcher quote tweeted a question with the single word “permadeath”.

Redfall's Environmental Storytelling Taps Into the Corruption of Safe Havens | IGN First

1 year 1 month ago

So far, Arkane Studios' game playgrounds have been set in fantastical, odd futures or deteriorating steampunk cities. With Redfall, the team at Arkane Austin opted to take its immersive sim mechanics to something closer to a familiar but twisted reality. In an interview with Arkane Austin Art Director Karen Segars, IGN learned more about the inspirations for Redfall's scenic island town setting, design challenges and solutions for the co-op mechanics, and telling Redfall's story through its art.

Segars said their journey in designing Redfall began with a trip to New England that started in Bangor, Maine, and concluded a few days later in Boston, Massachusetts. It was October, making it the perfect time to collect close-ups of fall foliage and the general vibe of Redfall's Halloween setting. Redfall is not based on a particular location in New England but Segars said it's instead more of an amalgamation of locations including Camden, Bar Harbor, Old Orchard Beach, and Acadia National Park.

Segars said the district landmark locations were important considerations, not only aesthetically, but for Redfall's gameplay design. Redfall marks two major development milestones for Arkane: not only is it the studio's first major open-world game, but it's also its first optional co-op campaign.

Diablo 4 Dev Confirms That if Hardcore Players Die in PvP, They're Dead Forever

1 year 1 month ago

Hardcore mode has been a time-honored Diablo tradition going back to Diablo II, challenging players with the possibility of permanent death. But what happens if your Hardcore character happens to stumble into one of Diablo IV's Fields of Hatred? Well, watch your back.

Asked whether are consequences for Hardcore characters who die in Diablo IV's PvP, Blizzard community director Adam Fletcher said simply, "Permadeath."

In other words, it's time to roll a new character.

Hardcore players will want to watch their step then, since the Fields of Hatred can be entered at will on Diablo IV's open-world. There players can collect Shards of Hatred by killing other players as well as monsters. The areas also feature special vendors that serve as a further enticement to test your might in one of Diablo IV's PvP zones.

For the daring, though, there's the Fearless Combatant achievement, which can only be earned by getting 10 PvP kills in Hardcore Mode. Otherwise you can avoid Fields of Hatred altogether, which is likely the more prudent route unless you get to be especially powerful.

Deal Alert: Score a Meta Quest 2 256GB VR Headset for Only $330.56 at Woot

1 year 1 month ago

Today, Woot is offering the open box Meta Quest 2 256GB VR headset for only $330.56. Note that this is the larger capacity 256GB model. That's a rather significant price drop for what is already one of the least expensive VR headsets on the market. The lower capacity 128GB model normally retails for $399.99 new and the 256GB model for $499.99 new.

After over 2 years on the market, the Quest 2 is still far and away the best value when it comes to VR gaming. For a price that beats every other comparable VR headset out there, it offers a completely tether-free experience, phenomenal inside-out tracking, and a huge library of games. Also, starting August of 2022, you do not need a Facebook account to login to your Quest 2. That was justifiably a sore point for many people.

5 Tabletop Game Alternatives to Warhammer 40,000

1 year 1 month ago

Warhammer 40,000 and its fantasy equivalent Age of Sigmar are dominant in the tabletop miniatures space. They’ve remained popular for decades thanks to the evocative settings, high-quality miniatures, and comfortable rulesets -- not to mention the seemingly endless series of video games, books, and other media. But we’re not wed to Warhammer. Tabletop gamers have other options.

Many alternatives boast their own advantages, such as easier entry, cleaner systems, and innovative twists. These five games feature a variety of styles and settings. Each is an exceptional miniatures game full of satisfaction and reward.

Marvel: Crisis Protocol

While some say Marvel has peaked cinematically, it’s still tearing it up on the tabletop. The first thing to notice about Crisis Protocol is its stunning 40mm sized miniatures. These are fully plastic, multi-part models that require careful assembly, but the work pays off. The next thing you will inevitably be struck by is the hefty price. These large miniatures are expensive, and that’s something to be prepared for when considering this game.

Sony's Shuhei Yoshida Weighs on Rise of AI: 'Creativity Is More Important'

1 year 1 month ago

Shuhei Yoshida, Sony Interactive Entertainment's independent developer head, has opened up with his thoughts on AI and how he's seeing those tools used in game development.

In an interview with The Guardian, Yoshida dove into his current day-to-day over at Sony as he scouts developer talent for PlayStation, including experiences with AI. He knows the rise in AI tools concerns game developers and says he's already seen pitches from indies using software like Midjourney for art. The app generates images based on user descriptions, and, according to Yoshida, its use by one participant in an indie competition created "amazing, beautiful graphics."

It is a tool. Someone has to use the tool

"That is powerful," Yoshida said. "That a small number of young people can create an amazing-looking game. In the future, AI could develop interesting animations, behaviors, even do debug for your program.”

However, the technology isn't so universally embraced by video game developers or creative industries at large. In January, several artists launched a lawsuit against Midjourney for copyright infringement. Training for Midjourney's tools involves scrapping the internet for images, a process that forgoes artist consent to use their work to create something else.

When prompted for his thoughts on the ethical concerns around AI's place in game development, Yoshida explained his perspective on AI's place as a tool, learning, and creativity within the industry.

“It is a tool," Yoshida told The Guardian. "Someone has to use the tool."

Apple Scores Another Win in Epic Antitrust Dispute

1 year 1 month ago

The US Ninth Circuit Court of Appeals has ruled in favor of Apple's App Store policies, saying that it doesn't violate federal antitrust law. The ruling confirms an earlier decision in an antitrust case brought by Epic Games, Bloomberg reports.

The latest decision is another blow to Epic in its ongoing dispute with Apple over the 30 percent cut it takes in in-app purchases. The dispute resulted in Fortnite being removed from the App Store — a deliberate PR play intended to weaponize the battle royale's vast fanbase.

The case has been wending its way through the courts ever since, with the latest decision in favor of Apple. However, the court also upheld a 2021 ruling that the App Store violate California's unfair competition law, which resulted in an injunction forcing Apple to permit developers on its platform to link to outside payment options with their apps.

"There is a lively and important debate about the role played in our economy and democracy by online transaction platforms with market power," the three-judge panel said. "Our job as a federal court of appeals, however, is not to resolve that debate — nor could we even attempt to do so. Instead, in this decision, we faithfully applied existing precedent to the facts."

Dead Island 2 Sells More Than 1 Million Units in Three Days

1 year 1 month ago

Deep Silver and Dambuster Studios announced that Dead Island 2 has sold over 1 million copies within the first three days of release.

“Dead Island 2 has won fans from around the world with countless players snapping up a copy of the drop dead gore-geous game in the first 72 hours,” Deep Silver said in a press release.

Furthermore, in-game stats were revealed detailing how many players did certain actions. Thus far, players have slayed 1.1 billion zombies, hacked off 756 million zombie limbs, and sliced 45 million zombies in half. Additionally, players spent a combined total of 11 million hours with the game and collectively died 28 million times so far.

The latter number is also over twice the population of the game’s setting, Los Angeles.

If you’re still hankering for some more Dead Island 2, a UK insurance company is offering a Dead Island 2 life insurance policy for £8,000.

Dead Island 2 is available now on PC, PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X|S. In IGN’s Dead Island 2 review, we said, “Dead Island 2 is a hilarious gore-fest and a competent zombie-slaying adventure, but lacks creativity outside of its great sense of humor.”

Sega of America Is Unionizing

1 year 1 month ago

A supermajority of workers at Sega of America have announced today that they have formed a union under the Communications Workers of America, and are asking for voluntary recognition from company management.

The group, which is based out of Irvine, California, consists of 144 workers in departments such as brand marketing, games as a service, localization, marketing services, QA, product development, ops, and more. Referring to themselves as "AEGIS-CWA," they have filed for a union election with the National Labor Relations Board, which will take place unless Sega of America management chooses to voluntarily recognize the union first.

AEGIS has stated the following goals in its mission statement:

  • Higher base pay for all, following industry standards, with raises tied to the cost of living and inflation.
  • Improved, stable benefits for all, including healthcare, retirement, remote work opportunities, and more.
  • Increased, clearly outlined opportunities for advancement.
  • Balanced workloads and schedules, and defined responsibilities for all positions.
  • Adequate staffing of departments to end patterns of overwork.

“Working for SEGA is a passion for many of us and it’s been so exciting to see that through organizing, we can make this work a sustainable long-term career," said Mohammad Saman, Sega QA lead and AEGIS member. "By creating our union, AEGIS-CWA, we’ll have a say in the decisions that shape our working conditions and ensure the job security and working conditions we deserve. We’re excited to protect what already makes SEGA great, and help build an even stronger company, together."

Redfall Co-op Campaign Preview | IGN First

1 year 1 month ago

Alone, Redfall is creepy. The town is littered with stories of people who were attacked by or turned into vampires when the vampire gods took over the once-charming island town. Wandering through dark houses and caves with only a flashlight to guide the way heightens tension, even when armed. Developer Arkane Austin knows how to craft a menacing atmosphere. However, adding other players to Redfall noticeably changed the odds. Together we made quick work of basic vampires, their cult followers, and the mercenary group intent on taking us down. Instead of quiet mutters in the dark, there was camaraderie. And what was once a potentially chilling challenge through an infested city became a hunting party ready to take on the biggest baddies with guns and powers blazing.

I had the pleasure of playing about four hours of Redfall on PC with one, two, and three additional co-op members. In that time we liberated a community center, took on the procedurally generated vampire nests, fought mini-bosses, and did plenty of exploring. My temporary teammates at Arkane Austin indulged me in trying out the hard difficulty, and with that settled, we were off.

If you're most interested in the solo experience of Redfall, be sure to check out IGN's first preview of Redfall.

The Division 2 on PS5 and Xbox Series Is Unlikely as Developer Won't Leave Last-Gen Players Behind

1 year 1 month ago

Ubisoft has said that it is unlikely The Division 2 will see native PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S versions as that would mean leaving behind players who are playing on the last generation of consoles.

Speaking to MP1st, creative director Yannick Banchereau explained why Ubisoft hadn’t released a new version of the game on current generation consoles.

“That’s unlikely because if we really wanted to take full advantage of those, since we only have one version of the game that is available on all platforms, taking full advantage of those would mean that the game would no longer be available on the old generations,” he said.

Beanchereau continued: “We still have a lot of players that play on all generations and we are not ready to leave them behind and ask them to upgrade. Right now we are trying to make sure every time we add something, it still runs smoothly on the old gen as well.”

While there won’t be PS5 or Xbox Series X|S versions of The Division 2 any time soon, Ubisoft did release a patch back in 2021 that gave the game a 4K and 60 FPS upgrade for those consoles.

Ubisoft has already confirmed its fifth year of support for The Division 2 starting in June 2023, with Season 1 including a rogue-lite feature called Descent Mode.

Call of Duty Is Getting a Board Game Adaptation Next Year

1 year 1 month ago

Call of Duty: The Board Game, a tabletop adaptation of Activision's seminal shooter series, has been announced with a 2024 release window. A Kickstarter campaign for the strategy game will launch this fall.

As reported by Variety, the Call of Duty tabletop game comes from Arcane Wonders, the company behind Sheriff of Nottingham and Onitama. It's set within the rebooted Modern Warfare timeline and will feature maps and weapons from the games.

Designer Bryan Pope also told Polygon: "[Players] simultaneously plan out [their] moves secretly and then resolve those at the same time out on the map. Line of sight is easily determined by colored lines on the map, and when you do have eyes on your opponent, combat happens. It’s all about outsmarting and outmaneuvering your opponent to get in the best possible position to win in a fight."

However, Arcane's ambitions for Call of Duty: The Board Game extend well beyond the two-player, $50 USD base game. It's being treated similar to a live-service video game with additional content — operators/miniatures, weapons, maps, and modes (including Zombies and co-op campaigns) — being added over time. Pope described it as "a series of products within the same game system."

Horizon: Forbidden West Sequel Seemingly on the Way as Guerrilla Confirms 'Aloy's Next Adventure'

1 year 1 month ago

Guerrilla Games appears to have quietly announced a Horizon: Forbidden West sequel while detailing a management reshuffle on its website.

“We have full confidence in our new leadership as they steer Guerrilla towards a bright future, expanding the world of Horizon with Aloy's next adventure, and our exciting online project,” read a post spotted by Eurogamer announcing the departure of veteran studio director Angie Smets.

Smets has been promoted to head of development strategy at PlayStation Studios following a near 20 year stint at Guerrilla Games. Future Horizon games will now be developed under the leadership of co-studio directors Joel Eschler, Hella Schmidt, and Jan-Bart van Beek.

As for the sequel, Guerrilla Games’ creative director Mathijs de Jonge had previously alluded to the potential trilogy by stating that the events of Horizon: Forbidden West — including its “cliff-hanger” ending — had set up some key plot points for a possible third game.

"Horizon is really about mystery; each of our stories has been about uncovering mysteries in both the old world and the present day, when the game takes place," explained Jonge last year. "Indeed, there is plenty of backstory that we can tap into to develop new storylines and create new mysteries from what we’ve already established."

The daily deals for Sunday, April 23 include a Tears of the Kingdom preorder for $59.99 ($10 cheaper than everyone else), a $10 preorder discount on Star Wars Jedi Survivor, and a whole lot more, including the still-available preorders for the Nintendo Switch OLED Tears of the Kingdom Edition. Cheers!

Preorder The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom (Switch) for $59.99

Tears of the Kingdom is out on May 12, and it costs $69.99 nearly everywhere. SuperShop has a nice discount though, costing just $59.99 when you use our exclusive coupon code "IGNZLDA". SuperShop used to be called Daily Steals. They are a legitimate site; we've ordered physical games from them ourselves in the past and they've always arrived in new, unopened condition.

Preorder the Nintendo Switch OLED The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom Edition Right Now

The Nintendo Switch OLED Tears of the Kingdom Edition console is out in less than 2 weeks. Preorder it at Amazon or Best Buy for $359.99. This version includes custom-themed Joy-Cons, a dock, and a Switch case, although, unfortunately, it doesn't come with a copy of the game.

Save $10 on Jedi Survivor Preorders at Newegg

Jedi Survivor comes out this week and the hype is real. I'm excited to jump in myself and feel the Force again. Preorder the Xbox version on Newegg and use the code SWSVV to save $10.

Daily Deals: You Can Preorder Tears of the Kingdom and Jedi Survivor Each for $59.99

1 year 1 month ago

Just because it's the weekend doesn't mean there aren't some good deals going on right now. You can still use the code IGNZLDA to secure The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom for $59.99, plus one of the best low-cost TCL 4KTVs is back down to its must-grab sale price. Here are the bestb deals for April 22, 2023.

Use Code 'IGNZLDA' to Save $10 on Tears of the Kingdom

There are few games as anticipated in 2023 as The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom, and I'm not just speaking for myself here. The vast majority of people are pretty stoked on it, and those who aren't don't need to explain themselves. To each their own, I say. Use the code IGNZLDA to get $10, making it the same price as every other new Switch game.

Save $10 on Jedi Survivor Preorders at Newegg

Here's another massive game hitting soon. Jedi Survivor comes out April 28, and if you preorder it for Xbox at Newegg and use the code SWSVV you can save $10, which is pretty great. This is another game I'm really excited about, but I think Jedi Survivors will probably be eclipsed by Tears of the Kingdom for me.

Great Price on a TCL 55" Roku 4-Series TV at Walmart

I cannot recommend this TV enough at this price. It's the exact price I paid for when I got mine a couple years back, and mine is an older model. It's a great TV for a great price, and if you want good 4K picture with Roku functionality, this is the choice to make. Now go get lost on the streets of Roku City.

Twitter's API Changes Appear to Have Caused Microsoft to Disable Xbox Console Screenshot Sharing

1 year 1 month ago

Twitter's recent API changes appear to have caused Microsoft to disable Xbox screenshot and clip sharing on console and via the Game Bar on Windows. Fortunately, the ability to upload to Twitter via the Xbox app is still working.

Xbox's Twitter account has been responding to users who are Tweeting about their problems with trying to upload screenshots to the social media platform, including @ShadowBoy662 who wasn't able to share Minecraft content.

"We have had to disable the ability to share game uploads to Twitter directly from the console and Game Bar on Windows," Xbox's Twitter account wrote. "You can still share your favorite moments to Twitter via the Xbox app for Android and iOS."

It also shared a "quick lesson" on sharing screenshots and clips via the Xbox mobile app.

Trinity Trigger Is a Rare JRPG That Lets You Save the World with Your Friends

1 year 1 month ago

Japanese role-playing games are more available and accessible than ever before. However, there are very few traditional games that allow multiple people to party up and play through its story together. Square Enix’s Mana franchise and Bandai Namco’s Tales of series are probably the best known for this in the past. Among some other one off titles, Trinity Trigger aims to add to that short list. While there seems to be a lack of depth in combat and how interesting the world is remains to be seen, Trinity Trigger’s first impression shows potential.

A young man named Cyan stars in Trinity Trigger as the Warrior of Chaos, and along with friends Elise and Zantis in tow they are traveling the world of Trinitia to find the Weapons of the Gods to prepare for a fate-defining battle with the Warrior of Order. Each party member has a partner known as a Trigger, which is more or less an animal-like companion that's fully self-aware and voiced who also transforms into your weapons. All party members can eventually gain access to every weapon type by exploring dungeons, but they all have their own expertise. Cyan excels with the sword, Elise the bow, and Zantis with his axe. I unfortunately did not get to explore an entire dungeon, but you can expect puzzles and a boss fight along the way.

Dredge Review

1 year 1 month ago

I didn’t know I needed a cosmic horror-fueled fishing game in my life – at least, not until I played Dredge. It’s not exactly a full-blown management sim ala Fishing Planet, but this 12-hour expedition through haunted open waters is both mysterious and compelling enough to tickle my brain and tug on all the right heartstrings. I felt possessed into flinging myself overboard with an unhinged smile cast across my lips, like one of its many macabre characters. …Figuratively speaking. Starting small and slow is a challenge, but upgrading my fishing boat led Dredge to spout forth a flurry of meaningful improvements to my fishing speed, inventory capacity, and my ability to scope out and evade the plethora of dangers that might rear their ugly heads at night.

Managing this fishing boat is no plank walk; five unique zones fit cozily within its relatively compact open world, hiding enough secrets, quests, and unique varieties of cartilaginous fish to fill its duration without overstaying its welcome.

All I know is that I’m a contract fisherman who’s rescued by the townsfolk of a remote island settlement called Greater Marrow. I’m given a new boat and… that’s all. But due to Dredge’s simple fishing and movement mechanics, this is pretty much all I need to know before I can begin my quest for fish on the open ocean, and it’s there that I’m immediately treated to a gorgeous sunrise stretching over the horizon. Leaving the bay of Greater Marrow for the first time and drinking in the sights and sounds is a treat.

To end the festivities, we thought it’d be fun to look back at some of the best examples of AI in movies, TV, and games and have you decide which character is the best.

From HAL 9000 to Cortana to GLaDOS to Skynet, there have been a ton of examples of AI that can stand shoulder-to-shoulder with the best we organics have to offer. Now, we understand the line between AI and robots can be a thin one, but we think some of our more advanced robotic and android friends are just as alive as we are and deserve some love in this Face-Off.

Do you think Terminator 2’s T-800 claims the top spot? How about the MCU’s Ultron or Star Trek: The Next Generation’s Data? We’ve selected 103 AI characters from the most beloved movies, TV shows, and video games to “Face-Off” against each other two at a time. Will you choose Battlestar Galactica’s Cylons over the Machines from The Matrix? Mega Man over Bender? The choice is yours…

UK Insurance Company Offers Dead Island 2 Themed Life Insurance Package

1 year 1 month ago

A UK insurance company is now offering a Dead Island 2 life insurance policy that will pay for bereaved friends to travel to Los Angeles for a zombie-themed wake.

As reported by VGC, the Dead Happy life insurance company, which offers a variety of different life insurance packages (with some quirkier than others), is offering the Dead Island 2 package for £8,000.

"Send your mates to the real LA for a zombie cocktail fuelled party before it goes to hell," reads the insurance description. "A wake to end all wakes, in your honour."

The package covers funeral expenses as well as the booze-fuelled trip, insisting that "we should all die responsibly". Dead Happy makes clear, however, that it can't force someone's friends to travel to LA, and that the Dead Island 2 package, alongside the rest of the company's offerings, are just wishes.

While some of the packages, called Deathwishes, are fairly simple, like leaving money for a charity or paying off debts, others do fall on the quirky side. These ones include sending your ashes to space and getting a bronze statue of yourself made.

In our 7/10 review of the actual game, IGN said: "Dead Island 2 is a hilarious gore-fest and a competent zombie-slaying adventure, but lacks creativity outside of its great sense of humour."

Disney Speedstorm Early Access Review

1 year 1 month ago

You may have heard Disney Speedstorm was going to launch as a free-to-play kart racer from the crew behind Gameloft’s long-running Asphalt series. In fact, you may have heard this because that’s what we told you about it back when it was unveiled in June last year. Well, that’s changed. It’s still a kart racer from the Asphalt team, but it’s not actually going to officially launch in its free-to-play state until late 2023 or early 2024. What we have in its place is an “Early Access” version of Speedstorm that just… costs money to play – which, of course, is how all good video games worked before the game industry started copying the gambling industry’s homework. However, despite packing an entirely decent brand of arcade racing action on track, Speedstorm’s drowning level of gacha guff and free-to-play DNA may leave those shelling out a fee to play feeling a little goofy.

For those of you curious about how Speedstorm’s Early Access program works – and what you’ll receive for your money beyond simply being able to play it – a 5,000-word FAQ awaits you on its official website. This is roughly 4,950 more words than I generally like to absorb before playing what’s ostensibly a family-friendly kart racer. At any rate, if you come out the other side of that under the impression Speedstorm is a mobile game masquerading as a PC and console game, know that in its current Early Access state that feels like a fairly accurate way to describe it.

How to Play the Tomb Raider Games in Chronological Order

1 year 1 month ago

Tomb Raider has a chartered history, with Lara Croft delving into ruins and tombs all over the world. Overcoming any and all obstacles set in her path, Lara has elevated herself into an exclusive and lauded pantheon of iconic video game protagonists.

With a new Tomb Raider currently in development at Crystal Dynamics and therefore a new Lara adventure on the horizon, we’ve created a chronological list of every Tomb Raider game so those interested can start (or restart) their spelunking adventures from the very beginning.

Jump to:

How Many Tomb Raider Games Are There?

There are a total of 19 Tomb Raider games that have been released as of 2023. These games are split over 3 different timelines, each distinct from one another, offering different plotlines and a slightly different spin on Lara and her supporting cast.

14 of these games have been released for home consoles, 6 also supported handheld portable consoles, and 6 were supported on mobile devices. Tomb Raider: The Prophecy, Lara Croft and the Guardian of Light, Lara Croft and the Temple of Osiris, Lara Croft Go, and Lara Croft: Relic Run are all stand-alone titles, and therefore will not be included on these lists.

Fortnite CCO Knows 'Exactly' How He'd Make Movie Adaptation, But Don't Expect One Anytime Soon

1 year 1 month ago

It seems like every video game franchise is getting a film adaptation these days, but one popular game you probably won't see on the big screen anytime soon is Fortnite, according to Epic Games' chief creative officer Donald Mustard.

In an interview with Collider, Mustard said the company was not "actively working on" a Fortnite movie at the moment, but then explained that a future adaptation is still a possibility:

"To me, I wanna do stuff that always just feels authentic and is a great story," he said. "And so, it's not something we're actively working on right now. I'm not gonna say it would never happen. In fact, I mean, I know exactly how I would do the Fortnite whatever. Exactly. I know exactly the story I’d want to, but it's not the focus right now. I don’t have time."

Mustard then added that Epic Games has a relationship with production company AGBO via investment, suggesting an adaptation might happen via that connection one day. But he also noted that given Fortnite's success, he wouldn't exactly have to work hard to get one greenlit. "Oh yeah, a Fortnite movie gets greenlit by any studio in a second. It’s just there's other stuff we're working on right now."

Street Fighter 6 Demo Announced Alongside Year 1 DLC Fighters and Single-Player World Tour Details

1 year 1 month ago

The Street Fighter 6 Showcase has not only revealed that a demo for the latest entry in the legendary fighting franchise is available now on PS5 and PS4 and soon on other platforms, but it also announced who the Year 1 DLC fighters will be alongside new details for the single-player World Tour mode.

Let's start with the demo, which will let players check out a bit of the World Tour Mode and certain modes in Fighting Ground. Furthermore, players will be able to use the extensive Avatar creator to build their very own fighter that can be imported into the full game when it is released on June 2, 2023. Progress in the World Tour Mode, however, will not carry over.

The demo is available right now for PS5 and PS4, and it will arrive on Xbox Series X, Xbox One, and Steam on April 26.

Street Fighter 6 to Get Four DLC Fighters in Year 1

Street Fighter 6 is meant to be a platform that will keep fighting fans coming back for years to come. To help with that mission, Capcom will be releasing new fighters to keep things fresh and exciting.

In the first year, Street Fighter 5's Rashid will kick things off in Summer 2023. Newcomer A.K.I. will be the second fighter in Autumn 2023, Street Fighter 4/5's Ed will be third in Winter 2024, and Super Street Fighter II Turbo's Akuma will finish Year 1 in Spring 2024.

While it's always exciting to have new fighters join a roster, these fighters will also be added to the World Tour mode so players can interact with them, learn more about their history, and incorporate their moves into their own Avatar.
