Nintendo Shows Off How Miis Will Look in Switch Sports

2 years 1 month ago

Nintendo Switch Sports, a spiritual successor to Wii Sports, will let players create and play with unique avatars. But that doesn’t mean Miis are going anywhere.

In Nintendo Switch Sports, players can create a Sports Mate, a detailed avatar they can create and customize. But in the original Wii Sports, players were able to use Miis as their athletic counterparts. Well, they still can in Nintendo Switch Sports.

In the official Nintendo Switch Sports overview trailer, Nintendo detailed the process of creating a Sports Mate. But for the fans of Miis, you can still use your custom avatar, though their head will be attached to a slightly more detailed body as you can see in the image below.

You might want to create a Sports Mate.

Jokes aside, it’s nice that the upcoming Nintendo Switch Sports will have the option of using either a Sports Mate or Mii avatar.

Though not a direct sequel, Nintendo Switch Sports will bring various, motion-controlled sports minigames to the Switch. Nintendo will also be adding new sports games post-launch with golf planned for Fall 2022.

Why Roberta Williams Is Re-embarking on a Colossal Cave Adventure in 2022

2 years 1 month ago

Even after she retired from making adventure games, Sierra On-Line co-founder Roberta Williams never stopped having adventures.

After a legendary career as a pioneer of the adventure genre, creating games like King's Quest, Mystery House, Phantasmagoria, and many more, Williams has spent her retirement sailing all over the world with her husband and Sierra co-founder Ken Williams. And she's still creating, too, having just published her first novel last year - a historical fiction entitled Farewell to Tara.

"I do adventure games and I live my life as an adventure," she tells me in an interview at GDC last week. "I love adventure! I'll go and get it wherever I can get it."

Roberta%20Williams

But when the COVID-19 pandemic prompted lockdowns that halted many of her usual adventures, Williams needed a new project. At the time, Ken was learning Unity with the intent of making a new game of his own when Williams suddenly remembered a game that had been very, very special to her years ago: Colossal Cave Adventure.

"Without Colossal Cave, Sierra On-Line would never have existed, and I would not have my career, or Ken either," she says.

Someone Has Modded a Clever Recreation of Elden Ring's Missing 'Age of Absolute' Ending

2 years 1 month ago

A video is circulating purporting to show off a datamined secret seventh ending to Elden Ring that hasn't been seen before — but as cool as the video is, it's sadly fake. [Update 4/1/2022: The creator has confirmed it was an April Fool's joke.]

Spoilers for the ending of Elden Ring follow read at your own risk!

The video, posted by Elden Ring YouTuber Garden of Eyes conveniently around April Fool's Day, shows off the supposed "Age Absolute" ending. The first half of the video is the same as other endings, where the Tarnished restores Marika's severed head to her body. The differences begin as a five-fingered hand begins to appear in the background behind them as they do.

The scene then cuts to the throne room shown in other endings, but instead of the Tarnished sitting on the Elden Throne, the five-fingered hand is present, with the Tarnished appearing to worship it. The voice-over that plays is also the same as other endings, except for the final line: "The Age Absolute."

Hyper Light Breaker, a 3D Co-op Game Set In the Hyper Light Drifter Universe, Announced

2 years 1 month ago

Heart Machine has revealed Hyper Light Breaker, a 3D, co-op focused game set in the same world as the cult classic Hyper Light Drifter, coming to Steam Early Access in Spring 2023.

The announcement marks the sixth birthday of Hyper Light Drifter, the studio’s seminal action/adventure game that took players on a beautiful but melancholic journey through a ruined world. That first game was built around challenging combat and a wealth of secrets that offered brief glimpses into the game’s otherwise opaque narrative.

However, where Drifter offered a 2D single-player experience (albeit with a local co-op mode that was added post-release), Heart Machine is now looking at creating Breaker in 3D, with online co-op as the focus.

The announcement trailer (below) seems to indicate that Breaker will combine Drifter’s exacting combat with the elegant traversal mechanics seen in Heart Machine’s second game, Solar Ash. Speaking to IGN, creative director Alx Preston also noted that it will be “a little more systems-heavy, with more RPG mechanics” compared to Drifter, complete with a range of distinct playable classes.

“And when we say online cooperative play, we mean multiple players, not just you and another person; we're looking at a group of players that can go out and kill some monsters together.”

The online aspect represents a second major technological leap for Heart Machine since its debut; Solar Ash saw it make the transition from 2D to 3D, resulting in a game that was well-received, but took nearly twice as long to make as Drifter.

Neon White Preview: Hands-On With a High-Speed FPS

2 years 1 month ago

At a glance, Neon White might look like a first-person shooter, but it’s not really — or not entirely. It plays like a shooter, but the focus is more on speedrunning through levels. It also pulls elements from the visual novel genre to tell a rather in-depth story. During a recent demo, director Ben Esposito explained how these pieces fit together. I have to say, I’m intrigued.

Neon White does have you running, jumping, and shooting from a first-person perspective, but the levels are short. Most can be completed in under a minute. The idea is to play and replay each level, earning rewards as you chart an optimal path to the end, trimming your completion time as you go.

Between levels, the story plays out like a visual novel as you learn what’s going on along with White, your amnesiac character. It turns out that Heaven, the eternal paradise, has become infested with demons. To exterminate them, God has enlisted a group of assassins from Hell. You play as one of the assassins, all of whom wear masks and have nicknames based on colors. You can chat up the other characters in a hub area called Central Heaven.

Stairway to Heaven

One unique aspect of Neon White is the weapon and ability system. In each level, you’ll pick up various cards that represent weapons you can use to blast enemies. But each card also has an ability you can use by discarding it. These abilities are crucial to completing the levels as fast as possible.

Xbox Backtracks on Removing 'Share to Twitter' Option

2 years 1 month ago

Microsoft has backtracked on changes to Xbox that would have removed the option to share captures directly to Twitter.

Earlier this month, reports hinted that an Insider build on Xbox consoles had removed the feature, meaning users would have had to upload screens to the Xbox app before sharing to Twitter from there. Fortunately, Microsoft has reversed course after fans objected, and the latest Xbox Insider update preview restores the option.

Brad Rossetti, the Xbox Insider Program Lead, confirmed the restoration of the feature in the latest beta update on Twitter yesterday.

Superfuse Preview: Homebrew Your Superpowers in This Diablo-Inspired ARPG

2 years 1 month ago

What if there was a Diablo-like ARPG where instead of selecting from a handful of preset abilities, you could handcraft your very own heroic persona down to the finest detail? That’s precisely what comic book-inspired superhero adventure game Superfuse hopes to deliver, and so far developer Stitch Heads Entertainment’s ambitious undertaking shows a lot of potential. The plethora of combat options feature dozens of combinations of abilities, modifiers, and status effects that pile on submenus within submenus to create one of the most disgustingly customizable hero-builders I’ve ever seen. It’s a stat-consumed nerd’s dream, and if Stitch Heads can pull it off I could easily see it becoming my next obsession.

Superfuse is a dungeon crawling style game in the vein of Diablo, but it trades in the wizard hat and dragons for a futuristic sci-fi world wrapped in a comic book aesthetic and art style. As you might expect, you spend a lot of your time blasting your way through hordes of enemies and collecting loot as you explore new areas, tackle quests, and level up. It’s a loop you probably know well if, like me, you’ve been addicted to life-consuming ARPGs of the past. But any similarity to my looting adventures of yesteryear ended the moment I opened up the menu and was greeted by piles upon piles of skill trees and customization options in one of the most intricate power-creation systems I’ve ever beheld.

Tekken Modder Adds Elden Ring Characters and the Director Says 'Plz Stop It'

2 years 1 month ago

A new mod for Tekken 7 has added Elden Ring fan favorites to the roster, but Tekken director Katsuhiro Harada has mixed feelings about it.

Created by Ultraboy, the Elden Ring Modpack replaces several standard Tekken fighters with a variety of Elden Ring characters – including Melina, Ranni, and our favorite Pot Boy, Alexander.

A video of the impressive mod has already gone viral, showcasing just how detailed the characters appear in the game.

Honestly, it’s impressive stuff. But Tekken director Katsuhiro Harada isn’t quite so impressed.

“Um... Sure, Elden is a Bandai Namco-funded title, and I was the production general manager in charge of Elden, so it's not irrelevant ... it's ridiculously well-made mod but plz stop it lol,” he said via Twitter.

Call of Duty Player Tries to Prove He's Not Hacking... and Accidentally Proves He's Hacking

2 years 1 month ago

Call of Duty: Vanguard semi-pro Kenji has been caught using hacks live on stream, thanks to his own monitor cam… which he was using to try and prove he wasn’t hacking.

According to Dexerto, the player was caught out during a 2v2 tournament where he faced iLuhvly and Sasuke who became suspicious of his actions.

Attempting to clear his name after being accused of using wallhacks, Kenji used a monitor cam to showcase his ‘legitimate’ gameplay – but accidentally exposed himself as a cheater in the process.

A wallhack allows players to see enemy players’ positions through walls. As you can see in the video above, Kenji’s screen shows boxes highlighting other players' positions, which he had presumably forgotten to turn off when he began streaming his monitor cam.

Weird West Review

2 years 1 month ago

In this alternate universe, the West was won by trying a bunch of ideas so crazy they just might work… and if they don’t, hitting the quick-load button to revert to an earlier save and trying something even crazier until you pull it off. Thanks to that freedom to experiment with its world as you explore, Weird West is one of those games that feels like a stealth and combat playground even as it tells five mostly serious, well-written stories with interesting decisions throughout and a thoughtful conclusion. And with so much ground to cover and replayability to investigate, it’s well worth putting up with some quirks and underwhelming loot.

What ties Weird West’s plot together is a group of shadowy figures using a magical brand to force your character’s consciousness into the bodies of various unsuspecting people. It’s a clever play on the way so many games have us take control of a character who already exists in that world but still need to bring us up to speed on their identity: here, our character is going through the same confusion we are. On top of that, the fact that our character is also an amnesiac and has no idea how or why they’re playing this game of musical bodies is another mind-bending layer of mystery that definitely adds some appropriately intriguing weirdness to Weird West.

There's a Marvel's Avengers Bug and The Only Fix Right Now Is to Delete Your Progress

2 years 1 month ago

It looks as though Marvel’s Avengers has a game-breaking bug on PS5… and the only way to fix it right now is by deleting all your campaign progress.

According to player reports, the bug causes the game to crash every time you load it up, with many players claiming the game is currently unplayable as a result. The only fix, for now, is seemingly to reset campaign progress entirely:

“Our team is continuing to investigate the issue causing a crash for some PS5 players,” developers announced via Twitter. “We think we've identified a fix that is currently being implemented/tested. We hope to have more news by tomorrow morning and will continue to keep you updated.”

“In the meantime, here's a workaround that is resolving the issue for some players - just note that it will reset your campaign progress: Go to Operations and Reset your Reassemble Campaign Progress. As soon as you become young Kamala on A-Day, force close the game from the PS home screen, then you should be able to start Avengers Initiative.”

The New PlayStation Plus Revealed: Is It Worth It? - Beyond 743

2 years 1 month ago

On this week's episode of IGN's PlayStation show, Podcast Beyond!, host Jonathon Dornbush is joined by Brian Altano, Jada Griffin, and Mark Medina to dig into the latest PlayStation news of the week. And of course, the biggest topic on our minds is the new PlayStation Plus subscription tiers, how Sony is altering PS Plus, and whether we have enough details yet to know if it's worth subscribing to the higher tiers.

The panel breaks down their initial reactions to the new PS Plus three-tiered system, how it integrates PlayStation Now, and where it stands as an offering for PlayStation fans. We dig into the pricing structure, the availability of older libraries, the lack of PS3 downloads and PlayStation Vita as a whole, and whether different tiers appeal to new PS5 players, longstanding PlayStation fans, or both. We of course touch on the biggest question - what the library will actually look like, and knowing that PlayStation won't release its first-party games day one on the service, we discuss what they could do to make the game libraries worth subscribing to. We also discuss whether a metaphorical sandwich can help explain the different PS Plus tiers. We also hear from the audience on some of your thoughts on the PlayStation Plus changes!

Then, we dig into some other news for the week, like April's PlayStation Plus games, the renewal of a trademark and tthe hopeful return of our one true PlayStation hero Knack, Gran Turismo 7's recent apology and economy changes, GTA+ if you wanted info on another subscription service, and a bit of Brian's Elden Ring Experience.

Mario Strikers: Battle League Is Up for Preorder

2 years 1 month ago

Mario Strikers: Battle League is set to release exclusively for Nintendo Switch on June 10. This is a souped-up soccer game that uses a very different set of rules than the more sim-ified versions of the sport. Full contact is encouraged, and Mario, Peach, and company can turn the ball into a fireball before leaping dozens of feet in the air for a special kick. The game is up for preorder from a number of retailers.

Preorder Mario Strikers: Battle League

As usual for first party Nintendo games (though there are a few exceptions!), only one edition is being released for Mario Strikers: Battle League. You can preorder it in physical or digital format from the above retailers.

Mario Strikers: Battle League Trailer

What is Mario Strikers: Battle League?

The Mushroom Kingdom is a fantastical place, so it only makes sense that their version of soccer would be a little different from ours. This is a full-contact sport, so you can use items like Bob-ombs and Koopa shells to get a leg up on the competition.

A History of Every Nintendo Direct in the Switch Era and Beyond

2 years 1 month ago

Since 2011, Nintendo has cemented a new way to share information about upcoming games and projects to their audience outside of the usual summer events season promotions, the Nintendo Direct. Other companies followed suit - PlayStation State of Play, Inside Xbox, etc. - and for good reason. These shows, which range from a few minutes to nearly an hour, deliver exciting updates in a convenient way that forgoes the necessity to always hold in-person events that not everyone can attend, and they can happen at any time of year.

As Nintendo continues to use the Direct as its main way of detailing its biggest games, we thought it would be a great time to look back at the biggest moments from their long history.

We’ve chosen to focus on multi-game Nintendo Directs (no Nindie or Indie World Showcases as those have often been cyclically tied to events like GDC and PAX, no single-game or Pokemon Directs as those are also often cyclical, no Super Smash Bros. - Mr. Sakurai Presents, or the Super Nintendo World Direct) that have aired since the Nintendo Switch was released on March 3, 2017, and specifically we’re counting up the ones that occurred in North America. Don’t worry, we’ve also included some highlights of the years before as well.

As we wait for the next Nintendo Direct that will hopefully reveal more about the Breath of the Wild sequel that was just delayed to Spring 2023 and more potential surprises, let’s take a look at all the Directs that led us to where we are today.

Meta Quest Gaming Showcase Announced For April

2 years 1 month ago

The second annual Meta Quest Gaming Showcase will take place on April 20 and will give fans a glimpse at the future of VR.

The Meta Quest Gaming Showcase, which was previously known as the Oculus Gaming Showcase, will air on April 20 at 10am PT/1pm ET/6pm BST and will have "new game announcements, gameplay first-looks, updates on games coming in the next year, and a whole lot of surprises."

While no teases were given for what specific games fans can expect from the show, last year's show featured updates on Resident Evil 4 VR, Star Wars: Tales from the Galaxy's Edge, Pistol Whip, and Lone Echo 2.

We very well learn more about the Splinter Cell and Assassin's Creed VR games that were announced last year, as well as the VR version of Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas.

The Story, and Enduring Legacy, of Resident Evil's Original Live-Action Opening

2 years 1 month ago

Greg Smith may look a little bit older now, but the resemblance is still uncanny. There’s the reddish hair, the bushy beard, and the stocky physique. All these years later, the Australian is still the spitting image of S.T.A.R.S (Special Tactics and Rescue Service) Alpha team member Barry Burton, a role he played almost thirty years ago for the original Resident Evil.

In 1995, Smith, along with five other foreigners living in Japan at the time took an acting gig for an upcoming game called, Biohazard. With development already underway, Capcom’s eventual horror classic already had character models and voice actors in place. But Biohazard’s director Shinji Mikami wanted to shoot some additional live-action scenes to bookend the experience and add to its sense of realism. This ask meant hiring a totally new set of actors who already resembled the characters and assembling a crew to shoot on location. The end result led to the now-iconic opening in which S.T.A.R.S Alpha Team arrives in the Arklay Mountains to investigate the whereabouts of the missing Bravo Team, as well as four different endings portraying the remaining survivors’ miraculous escape from the horrors of the Spencer Mansion. For Smith and the other actors, it was just another role; another way to make money while living in Japan. They couldn’t possibly have imagined what happened next.

The Stanley Parable: Ultra Deluxe Gets April Release Date

2 years 1 month ago

The Stanley Parable: Ultra Deluxe will come to Steam, Nintendo Switch, PS4, PS5, Xbox Series X/S, and Xbox One on April 27.

Described as a "significant expansion" to the 2013 original, Ultra Deluxe brings the cult classic to console for the first time, with the new content's script being longer than the original game.

The Stanley Parable is an experimental, narrative-driven first person game about choice, or lack thereof, and freedom. As described by developer Crows Crows Crows, "the rules of how games should work are broken" as "The Stanley Parable is a game that plays you".

Ultra Deluxe was revealed at The Game Awards in 2018 and was originally expected to launch in 2019, but following three separate delays across three years it's finally being released.

The scope of the game has grown considerably since the original was revealed, Crows Crows Crows said: "Early in development, the plan was just to bring The Stanley Parable to consoles with a few small tweaks, but as time went on we kept getting more and more excited about what else we could do with the game.

"Since The Stanley Parable was a game about surprises, we've tried to implement new content in ways that players won't be expecting."

Russian Loop Hero Developer Four Quarters Encourages People to Pirate Its Game Due to Sanctions

2 years 1 month ago

Editor's Note: The war in Ukraine is an ongoing, painful and emotive topic. IGN urges community members to be respectful when engaging in conversation around this subject and does not endorse harassment of any kind.

Update 03/31/2022: Loop Hero publisher Devolver Digital has told PC Gamer that it supports Four Quarters' stance, and was aware of it ahead of the announcement.

"Devolver Digital fully supports Four Quarters as they navigate this incredibly difficult period," the statement reads. "We've been communicating consistently with the team to help them wherever possible and were alerted of the statement ahead of time, which we back 100%."

Russian Loop Hero developer Four Quarters has encouraged those who are unable to purchase the game due to sanctions placed on Russia after its military invasion of Ukraine to pirate it instead.

As reported by Kotaku, these sanctions have made it difficult for people in Russia to purchase the game on online storefronts like Steam. Some of these potential buyers took to a Russian social media site called VK to ask how they can purchase the game while still supporting the developers in the process.

Four Quarters responded to these questions by telling players to "raise the pirate flag" and torrent the game if they can't purchase it. The developer shared a link to a torrent version of Loop Hero on RuTracker and reminded players that they should use a VPN when doing so.

PlayStation Plus Games for April 2022 Announced

2 years 1 month ago

Sony has revealed that the PlayStation Plus games for April 2022 are Hood: Outlaws & Legends (PS5 & PS4), SpongeBob SquarePants: Battle for Bikini Bottom - Rehydrated (PS4), and Slay the Spire (PS4).

As detailed on PlayStation.Blog, all three of these games will be made available at no extra cost to all PlayStation Plus subscribers on Tuesday, April 5.

This news follows Sony's "all-new PlayStation Plus" that is set to launch in June with three separate tiers and, depending on what tier you choose, access to PS5, PS4, PS3, PS2, PS1, and PSP games. Unlike Xbox Game Pass, however, no tier will give you access to PlayStation first-party exclusives at launch.

Hood: Outlaws & Legends is an online multiplayer title that is, as our review puts it, a "Robin Hood fantasy heist game where you and a crew of outlaws steal from the heavily guarded fortresses of the rich and give it to the poor."

While we enjoyed our time with it, we also said that it "rewards sloppiness over cunning. That can be fun, but it also badly needs more content."

Matcho – a Match-3 FPS – Announced

2 years 1 month ago

Genre-blending is nothing new for video games, but we think it's safe to say that the following two genres have never been blended together before: first-person shooters and match-3 games. Yes, you read that right: Matcho is a match-3 FPS that also bills itself as an action-adventure game with an actual story. It sounds nuts but the trailer (which you can watch at the top of this page) is worth taking a look at.

In Matcho, you play as the twentysomething Max, whose mysterious illness has kept him confined to the Triagon laboratories in search of a cure. The plot involves aliens, a kidnapping, and Max's malady, and if it's anywhere as intriguing as Matcho's gameplay appears to be, then we might all be in for something very unique.

The Unreal Engine-powered game promises "a non-linear, humor-packed plot with multiple endings" as well as "an extensive, built-in parkour system lets you wall-run, double-jump, float, and dash in any direction." Combos and chaining attacks will lead to bigger wins and, presumably, more fun.

We'll be keeping a close eye on this one. If you'd like to as well, you can wishlist Matcho on Steam if you're interested. Matcho will be released on PC, PS5, and Xbox Series X|S.

Star Trek: Resurgence - The First Preview (IGN First)

2 years 1 month ago

Certain franchises lend themselves better to one genre or another. For example, you wouldn’t look for a Fast and the Furious strategy game just as much as you would expect a combat-oriented Star Wars Jedi game like Fallen Order. Star Trek is, bizarrely, a world that has been painted onto numerous genres rather well, from the excellent 2000 first-person shooter Star Trek Voyager: Elite Force to the still-running MMORPG, Star Trek Online. The latest core-gamer-aimed effort from The Next Generation’s 24th century era is Star Trek: Resurgence, which seems to be a perfect fit for Trek as a narrative adventure game, made by a group of ex-Telltale developers at Dramatic Labs who have proven themselves quite good at what they do.

Dramatic Labs is headed by Kevin Bruner, the Telltale founder whose roots in the adventure game genre trace back to his days working on Grim Fandango and Monkey Island at LucasArts. He had a heck of a run at Telltale, but Bruner and the Dramatic Labs team aim to make some noticeable improvements for Resurgence. First among them is the graphics engine; Telltale’s engine was famously long in the tooth long before the company shut down, so Bruner and the team partnered with Epic, and as such Resurgence uses the much prettier Unreal Engine.

Fast & Furious: Crossroads Is Being Delisted Less Than Two Years After Release

2 years 1 month ago

It looks as though Fast & Furious: Crossroads is being pulled from sale less than two years after it launched in August 2020.

An update from Bandai Namco has confirmed that Fast & Furious: Crossroads will be delisted by the end of the month, will all sales ending on April 29, 2022, at 4am CEST.

“If you bought the game digitally it will remain in your library and can be redownloaded in the future,” says an update on the game’s official website. “Any DLCs purchased before April 29, 2022, will still be available to use after this date.”

Additionally, the game’s online modes will also remain active for the time being. How long before that goes offline is anyone’s guess, however.

The critically panned game from Bandai Namco didn’t exactly win over gamers or fans of the Fast & Furious films. Although there’s no official reason given for the game being pulled from sale, it’s likely that the negative response has a lot to do with it.

Digital copies of the game will remain in your library, so you can always re-download it in the future if you want. But no new copies will be sold after April 29. Additionally, you can still use any DLC you’ve purchased. So, don’t worry if you’ve picked up any additional rides – they’re safe.

Fast & Furious: Crossroads is described as a team-based vehicular heist action game with players taking on high-speed heists and adrenaline-fueled stunts alongside the likes of Vin Diesel, Michelle Rodriguez, and Tyrese Gibson.

But don’t get too excited…

How PlayStation Plus Compares to Xbox Game Pass and Nintendo Switch Online

2 years 1 month ago

After months of reports, rumors, and hopes, Sony has finally announced an overhaul to its subscription service plans, with the rebranding of PlayStation Plus in June. While the name remains the same, the service has evolved with some new additions, such as limited-time game trials, and the shift of another PlayStation service under the PS Plus umbrella, with PlayStation Now’s capabilities being brought into the Plus fold.

So with the new version of PlayStation Plus on the way, how closely does it compare to its competition? To better understand the rebrand’s offerings in conjunction with other subscription services, let’s take a closer look at how it has not only evolved from its initial form but also how it differs from Xbox Game Pass and Nintendo Switch Online. The short answer? All three certainly share some commonalities, but there’s actually some quite different focuses when it comes to how these services are enticing would-be subscribers, so let’s dig in.

Gundam: The Witch From Mercury Will Feature the Series' First Female Protagonist

For the first time since its debut in 1979, a Mobile Suit Gundam series will feature a female main character.

Bandai Namco released a new teaser trailer for The Witch From Mercury showing the protagonist's short red hair blowing in the wind, and Gundam Aerial booting up towards the end. The series looks to have a modern art style and inspirational music if the trailer is anything to go by.

Produced by studio Sunrise, this is the first Gundam TV show since 2015's Mobile Suit Gundam: Iron-Blooded Oprhans. There will also be a prologue to The Witch From Mercury, which features two other Mobile Suits, Beguir-Beau and Gundam LFRITH. Rainbow Six Siege Creative Director on Permanent Arcade Mode, Cross-Play, and More

2 years 1 month ago

Boots On the Ground

We conducted some exclusive recon on all the new updates for Year 7 of Rainbow Six Siege. Here are top takeaways from our debriefing session with Alex Karpazis, Creative Director of the franchise, with insight on what you can expect to excite in Year 7.

Living for Deathmatch

A big addition that should make jumping into Siege a smoother experience for beginners is the new game mode, Team Deathmatch. It features five-on-five gameplay and no special abilities. “We’ve been asked about this kind of game mode for a while and we’re super happy to ship it in Season 1,” Karpazis revealed. “Team Deathmatch is a lot more approachable for new players to understand how our gun handling reacts and how destruction works in the game.”

A New Reverence for Reputation

In Season 2, you’ll start seeing signs of a new Reputation System—a behind-the-scenes monitor that has been quietly active for about a year. “It highlights players who are positive in the Siege community, while making sure we have the proper tools to address cheaters and toxicity in our game, where we have a zero-tolerance rule,” Karpazis said.

Phase 2 of the Reputation System is slated to launch in Season 3; it screens for inappropriate voice and in-game chat violations and makes sure that players who abuse those systems don’t have access until they appropriately change. “In Season 4, you’ll see a Reputation System in full that can reward players for good behavior and features a more robust mechanism for penalizing or banning players for toxicity or cheating,” he vowed.

Street Fighter 5 Definitive Update Features Cel-Shaded Graphics And 79 Pages Of Patch Notes

2 years 1 month ago

Capcom has unveiled everything players can expect out of the Street Fighter 5: Champion Edition's final update – including a staggering 79 pages worth of patch notes. Dubbed the "Definitive Update", today's substantial patch has no shortage of fresh content.

The pixel filter pays homage to the series' past by bathing the game in a classic arcade aesthetic that really hammers home the nostalgia, but it’s the cel-shaded filter that truly offers something special. The crisp new visuals of the filter add depth and vibrancy to the game's 45 characters and their various attack animations, and could become a new fan-favorite way to play.

Street%20Fighter%205%26%2339%3Bs%20Definitive%20Update%20includes%20an%20attractive%20new%20cel-shaded%20filter.

Meanwhile, the 2022 Premier Pass will provide players with costumes for Seth, M. Bison, and Akira, re-colors for all 45 characters, two fighter profile themes, five titles, and 10,000 Fight Money. Capcom is also planning to release new tracksuits for every character over the course of the Capcom Pro Tour.

Xbox Games With Gold for April 2022 Revealed

2 years 1 month ago

Microsoft has announced that March 2022's Games with Gold are Another Sight, Hue, Outpost Kaloki X, and MX vs ATV Alive.

As revealed on Xbox Wire, the four Games with Gold will be available to anyone with Xbox Live Gold or Xbox Game Pass Ultimate, with Another Sight and Outpost Kaloki X available on April 1.

Another Sight is a side-scrolling fantasy adventure where players take control of a girl and her cat in a journey beyond reality. It was released in 2019 and takes around five or six hours to complete.

Also available on April 1, but only until April 15, is Outpost Kaloki X, a light-hearted space-station tycoon game with ridiculous characters and stories that released almost two decades ago in 2004.

In our 7/10 review, IGN said it's "an entertaining and surprisingly deep experience. For anyone looking for a quirky, unique experience, it's worth it to shell out to drop this onto your hard drive."

Available later in the month on April 16 is Hue, another game which concludes after around six hours. This 2016 platformer has players change the colour of the environment to solve puzzles, reveal hidden objects, and phase out obstructions.

Zelda: Breath of the Wild 2 Fans Already Have Theories About That Broken Master Sword

2 years 1 month ago

Nintendo announced today that it would be delaying the long-awaited Zelda: Breath of the Wild sequel to Spring 2023, but a brief bit of footage included in the announcement has led to fans across the internet coming together with a common question – what's going on with the Master Sword? Some of them already have intriguing theories.

Today's footage shows Link holding what appears to be a destroyed (melted? Corrupted?) Master Sword near an orb of light, leading many fans to wonder if his quest (or part of it) could end up revolving around reforging the series' classic weapon.

Reddit users Zeldatroid and Capable_Afternoon687 even speculate that a journey to reforge the sword could ultimately be leading up to a final showdown with Ganon to see him defeated once and for all, opening the way for future games to include fresh villains.

More concerning is the question of what could've possibly caused such damage to the series’ all-powerful sword. Malice – a corrupted sentient goo found around Hyrule in Breath of the Wild – reaches out and grabs Link's arm in a previous trailer, which could explain why the character appears to feature an arm cover or prosthesis of sorts in the new footage. It's possible, then, that this attack on Link led to the destruction of the Master Sword as well.

The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild 2 Delayed to 2023

2 years 1 month ago

The sequel to The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild has been delayed to Spring 2023. We got a tiny piece of new footage in return.

Series producer Eiji Aonuma announced and apologised for the delay in a video (below), saying "in order to make this game's experience something special, the entire development team is continuing to work diligently on this game, so please wait a while longer." No specific reason was given for the delay.

Eiji Aonuma described a little about the game amid the announcement, saying: "As previously announced, the adventure in this sequel will take place not just on the ground as in the previous game, but also in the skies above. However the expanded world goes beyond that, and there will be an even wwider variety of features you can enjoy, including new encounters and new gameplay elements."

Most of that was backed by footage we'd seen before, but one extra bit of footage has been added, showing a closer look at the new tattooed Link(?) we've previously glimpsed, and what seems to be a corrupted or broken version of the Master Sword.

Uncharted Mobile Spin-Off Closes Down

2 years 1 month ago

The Uncharted: Fortune Hunter mobile game has been shut down.

Developer Naughty Dog announced the news on Twitter (below), saying the game will no longer be available to download on Android or iPhone devices, and all in-game purchases have been disabled.

Fortune Hunter is a puzzle platformer game that released alongside Uncharted 4: A Thief's End in May 2016, featuring more than 200 levels for series' protagonist Nathan Drake to overcome.

The game will still be playable in offline mode for those who have it downloaded already, but once users delete the app or change phones, Uncharted: Fortune Hunter will be gone forever.

Despite not making a huge splash in the gaming sphere when it launched and remaining relatively quiet since, the game was fairly well received by users. Its rating on the Apple App Store is a 4.4 out of 5 while on the Google Play Store it has a 3.9 out of 5.

While the Uncharted Movie was released earlier this year, the gaming side of the franchise has been relatively dormant since 2017 when Uncharted: The Lost Legacy was released on PlayStation 4.

Fortnite Zero Build Is a No-Build Battle Royale Mode That Is Here to Stay

2 years 1 month ago

Fortnite Zero Build is a new no-build battle royale mode that is here to stay following the beginning of Chapter 3, Season 2: Resistance that saw building temporarily removed from the main game for a short time.

As detailed by The Fortnite Team, Zero Build can be found in the Discover page as Solo, Duos, Trios, and Squads playlists. As the team notes, "You can access the Discover page by clicking on the "CHANGE" button above "PLAY!" in the Lobby."

Much like it was in the main game, all players will have access to a recharging Overshield that will help make up for the lack of cover that building would usually provide. Without building, you will need to "show off your sharp shooting, sharp thinking, and sharp sense of space as you take on the battle full-tilt."

Building has been gone since Fortnite Chapter 3, Season 2 began, and when it returns, those who had been waiting for this new way to play will still be able to play with a no-build mode.

Alongside the launch of the new season, Epic Games announced that it would be donating all of its Fortnite proceeds to humanitarian relief for people affected by the war in Ukraine for a two-week period. As of March 25, the donations have amounted to $70 million.

Bungie Sues Those Behind Fake YouTube Copyright Claims - Before It Knows Who They Are

2 years 1 month ago

Bungie is suing those behind a series of fake copyright claims that plagued Destiny content creators (and Bungie itself) last week. It just needs to find out who they were first.

As reported by TorrentFreak, the developer is targeting ten anonymous individuals, and while Bungie doesn't yet know their identities, the lawsuit claims "it will discover them soon, via subpoena or otherwise."

Several channels, including Bungie's own, had DMCA (Digital Millennium Copyright Act) strikes filed against them, causing YouTube to take a number of videos down. Bungie has criticised the site for not identifying the claims as fraudulent.

The developer said in the lawsuit: "Given the ease with which malicious actors can exploit YouTube’s flawed DMCA practice and harm Bungie’s community, Bungie brings this action to recover for the [John] Doe defendants’ tortious and illegal conduct, and, frankly, to demonstrate to anyone else stupid enough to volunteer as a defendant by targeting Bungie’s community for similar attack that they will be met by legal process."

The defendants allegedly created Google accounts to launch the takedown requests between March 17 and 22, and as Bungie added: "as far as YouTube is concerned, any person, anywhere in the world, can issue takedown notices on behalf of any rights holder, anywhere.

New PlayStation Plus Won't Add First-Party Exclusives at Launch

2 years 1 month ago

Sony's upcoming overhaul of the PlayStation Plus subscription service may sound a bit like Xbox Game Pass, but there's one important distinction: first-party exclusive games will not be added to PlayStation Plus on the day they release (at least not yet).

Talking to GamesIndustry.biz, PlayStation boss Jim Ryan said: "[In terms of] putting our own games into this service, or any of our services, upon their release... as you well know, this is not a road that we've gone down in the past. And it's not a road that we're going to go down with this new service. We feel if we were to do that with the games that we make at PlayStation Studios, that virtuous cycle will be broken. The level of investment that we need to make in our studios would not be possible, and we think the knock-on effect on the quality of the games that we make would not be something that gamers want."

That makes it pretty clear: God of War Ragnarök will not be available day one on PlayStation Plus. Nor should we expect brand new games from the likes of Naughty Dog, Insomniac, or Guerrilla to arrive on the service the day they launch.

At least, not for now. Ryan said, "I don't want to cast anything in stone at this stage. All I'm talking to today is the approach we're taking in the short term. The way our publishing model works right now, it doesn't make any sense. But things can change very quickly in this industry, as we all know."

Here's How Much Each New PlayStation Plus Tier Will Cost

2 years 1 month ago

Sony has finally announced its revision of its PlayStation Plus subscription service, effectively combining PS Plus and PS Now, alongside adding premium tiers that look likely to compete with Microsoft's Xbox Game Pass. There's a brand new three-tier structure to the service, Essential, Extra, and Premium.

The Extra tier will cost $14.99/month, and includes up to 400 PS5 and PS4 titles, while the Premium Tier will cost $17.99 a month and include all of those games, alongside an extra 340 additional games from PS3, PS2, original PlayStation, and PSP. The membership tiers will officially come into place starting in June, with a phased approach across Asia and North America, before making its way everywhere else.

How Much Does the All-new PlayStation Plus Cost?

We've included a detailed breakdown of the costs just below here, but putting it simply, if you want to remain on your basic PlayStation Plus subscription, you're looking at PS Plus Essential.

This costs $9.99 a month, and includes all the benefits you're already used to, including online multiplayer access, cloud game saves, monthly free games, and more. PS Plus Extra and Premium are what many will compare to the Xbox Game Pass model.

PlayStation Officially Announces 'All-New PlayStation Plus' Subscription With Multiple Tiers and Retro Games

2 years 1 month ago

Sony has finally revealed its Xbox Game Pass competitor, an "all-new PlayStation Plus" that brings together the existing PS Plus and PS Now into a three-tier subscription service that includes up to 700 games and access to retro games at the top tier. It will open for some markets in June and roll out worldwide regionally after that.

After months of reports, and even longer being speculated about, Sony finally revealed the new service today. It consists of three tiers, PlayStation Plus Essential, PlayStation Plus Extra, and PlayStation Plus Premium. As part of the move, PS Now will be closed down, with members migrated to the Premium tier, with no change to prices at launch.

At its top tier, the new PS Plus will offer more than 700 games for streaming or download (including streaming on PC), and the library will be "regularly refreshed". PS3 games will be available as streaming-only titles, while PS1, PS2 and PSP games will come with download or streaming options. Sony has made clear that (at least for now) first-party exclusives will not be launched into the service for any tier, unlike Xbox Game Pass.

The native PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series versions of Apex Legends are now available.

As part of the Warriors Collection event, developers Respawn Entertainment and Panic Button temporarily brought back Control mode, added an arena map, released limited-time items, and quietly launched the next-gen versions.

Apex Legends runs in native 4K resolution on the new consoles, with 60hz gameplay and full HDR. Next-gen players will also have improved draw distances and more detailed models.

The developers also outlined a number of updates coming in the future, including 120hz gameplay, adaptive triggers and haptic feedback on PS5, and other general visual and audio improvements across both consoles.

While the new version of Apex Legends arrives automatically through Smart Delivery on Xbox Series X and S, PS5 users need to take a few more steps.

New World Update Finally Completes the Game's Main Story

2 years 1 month ago

Update: Amazon has announced that Heart of Madness will now be released on March 30 after a bug was found.

An enormous New World update arrives on March 29, and it finally completes the game's main story.

While the patch includes literally hundreds of changes, it's headlined by the inclusion of the game's final main storyline quest, called Heart of Madness, through which players can finally take on the mysterious and evil Isabella.

The new story mission is given by Yseult Meredith at the Mountain Home Outpost in Shattered Mountain and developer Amazon Games recommends players be at level 60 with Gearscores between 550 and 570.

It's not clear what Amazon Games plans to do with the storyline of the game beyond your confrontation with Isabella, although we'd guess there may be tease included.
