Animal Crossing: New Horizons Update 1.1.4 Adjusts Egg Spawn Rate

4 years 1 month ago

The Animal Crossing: New Horizons community has been up to its stylish haircuts in eggs over the last week, but a new update to the game calms it down with the egg output. According to the official patch notes for version 1.1.4, which you can read below, the "appearance rate" of Bunny Day egg drops has been adjusted through April 11.

Reports of the new egg drop rate first came from Siliconera prior to the patch's English translation. The adjusted drop rate will be in effect until April 11, then go back to a higher drop rate on Bunny Day proper, which is April 12. Though you may already have all the eggs you need, it does make sense for them to become more commonplace on the holiday itself.

Final Fantasy 7 Remake Review Roundup

4 years 1 month ago

Final Fantasy 7 is one of the most beloved games in Square Enix's catalog, and this week it finally gets its long-awaited remake. The Final Fantasy 7 Remake is just the first part of the story, with more entries to come in the future. That has left some wondering if this entry would feel like a complete package, and the answer from critics is in.

The consensus is a resounding yes. Critics agree that despite the limited scope, FF7 Remake is a complete work in its own right and a loving tribute to the classic game. GameSpot's Final Fantasy 7 Remake Review concludes that this entry takes what was great about the original and makes it even better. As a result, it has become the latest of only a handful of games to earn a 10/10 from GameSpot.

"The majority of the game is new material, lovingly introduced to further detail a picture that had been painted in broad strokes," Tamoor Hussain wrote. "This isn't a game that panders to fans, as newcomers can also enjoy the majesty of Midgar and learn to love characters for the first time, all while playing a mechanically dense and rewarding role-playing game. Even if it's just a piece of the original Final Fantasy VII, this remake takes one of the most beloved games of all time and elevates it higher."

Final Fantasy 7 Remake PSA: Don't Skip The Side Missions, And Here's Why

4 years 1 month ago

So you've been waiting 15 years for the remake of Final Fantasy VII, and you can't wait to speed through the whole thing to satisfy that insatiable nostalgia of yours, but take a deep breath because you're going to want to experience everything the game has to offer. Yes, that means completing every side mission, which you can easily get locked from doing if you keep pushing the story forward.

When the original Final Fantasy VII was released 23 years ago, it spent a good chunk of time in Midgar, running you through an overview of the world, the story, and characters. Still, because it was such a big game, you had to spread your one-wing eventually and fly away to pursue other endeavors across the planet, relegating the city of Midgar to only some late-game shenanigans.

Final Fantasy 7 Remake PSA: How to Find The Keycard During That Chapter 3 Side-Mission

4 years 1 month ago

When you jump into Final Fantasy VII Remake's first semi-open area, you're likely to become confused by an early side mission called Just Flew In From The Graveyard. This relatively simple quest requires you to venture back into an abandoned factory you visited during a previous side mission. Your objective is to exterminate a single flying Drake, but the catch is you need a keycard to open a locked door leading to where it's located.

The quest giver Gwen says that the keycard is hidden in one of the breakable Shinra boxes found in the abandoned factory. Unfortunately, the boxes in the area are pretty easy to miss, so if you've played normally up until this point, it's likely you'll have spent the past half-hour scouring every nook and cranny looking for that accursed keycard. It certainly took us a while.

To find the keycard, head back to the area where you grabbed the Fire Materia during your first run through this area completing the Nuisance in the Factory side mission. If you didn't nab it, head to the location we've marked in the map screenshot below.

Apex Legends Developers Say Crossplay Is "Important", But It's Not Confirmed Yet

4 years 1 month ago

Apex Legends is one of the biggest and best battle royale games out there, but it's missing what many consider an important or essential feature--console crossplay, which would allow PS4 and Xbox One players to team up or fight against each other. In a new interview with Game Informer magazine (as relayed by GameSpot sister site Comicbook.com), general manager Dusty Welch and director Chad Grenier have talked about wanting to include this feature.

Welch told the magazine that they saw how crossplay is now "something that is kind of expected in the industry and is important to a game like ours." He says that he and Grenier personally play on different systems at home, and wish they could team up.

"On a personal level, yes, we'd love to do that and party up on the weekends," Welch says. "I think it's an important thing to get to."

April 3’s patch was more extensive, with 17 different causes of game crashes being identified and patched. Patch 1.0.4 also introduced tweaks for increased stability and performance, removed certain debuffs that would hinder the player at night and balanced parts of the campaign.

E3 2021 Dates Set, But Expect A "Reimagined" Show

4 years 1 month ago

E3 2021 has locked in dates, and will happen from June 15 to 17, 2021. Gamesindustry.biz is reporting that the ESA has set these dates following the cancellation of E3 2020, and that they've said that the event will be "reimagined."

What exactly this means isn't yet clear, and it will likely be some time before we know exactly what E3 2021 will look like.

E3 2021 might have needed to look different even if COVID-19 hadn't forced the cancellation of this year's showcase--2020 was set to be the second year of E3 without PlayStation, and regular E3 Colosseum host Geoff Keighley was planning on missing the event for the first time in 25 years.

Mafia II: Definitive Edition Revealed By Korean Rating Board

4 years 1 month ago

Mafia II released for PC, PS3, and Xbox 360 in 2010, and now, a decade later, there's some evidence that a new version of the game might be on the way. Gematsu is reporting that the Game Rating and Administration Committee of Korea has rated something called Mafia II: Definitive Edition.

Whether this definitive edition of Mafia II is a Switch port, a PS4 and Xbox One remaster, or even a next-gen version of the game, is unknown. An official announcement will hopefully come soon and clear up any confusion.

It would not be the first time a 2K release has been revealed by a ratings board in 2020-- the Switch ports of XCOM 2 and The BioShock Collection both leaked early through ratings boards, as did Activision's Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 Remastered.

The most recent game in the Mafia franchise is 2016's Mafia III, developed by Hanger 13. That studio is currently working on a new project that will be unveiled this year--it's unclear whether or not it will be a game set in the Mafia universe.

Mafia II received an 8.5/10 in our original review, and was praised for "deliver(ing) fun shoot-outs and pockets of shocking brutality in a world you're delighted to be a part of."

Rocksmith 2014 Edition DLC Ends After 383 Weeks, Team Moves On To New Project

4 years 1 month ago

Rocksmith 2014 Edition is ending its DLC support after over five years of weekly releases. The newly released Opeth song pack is the final piece releasing, Ubisoft has announced, and the game's library is now complete after 383 weeks straight of DLC releases.

Rocksmith 2014 Edition now features 1570 songs if you bought all the DLC, spanning seven decades of artists (plus Bach, an 18th century outlier). According to the post to the Rocksmith website, the team is moving away from DLC because they have "been hard at work on a new project."

"For over a decade, we’ve watched players learn, grow, and constantly surprise us with your talent, creativity, and eagerness to help one another reach your goals," the post reads, referring to the 2011 release of the original Rocksmith. "We truly could not be more proud to play a part in this guitar journey with you."

Although there will be no new DLC, the team behind the game promises that "the Rocksmith Dev Stream will continue (in a new format), along with some more surprises." It's unclear whether the team's next project will include guitars, too.

Last Of Us 2 Director Says No Decision Yet About Digital-Only Release, As He Reflects On The Delay

There is a built-in anticipation; you can't wait for this thing that you've been crafting and honing and sometimes dreaming about. You can't wait to get it into people's hands, and see their reactions; what they like, what they didn't like or where the story takes them. Xbox Series X Will Push Subscription Model For Next-Gen Launch, Phil Spencer Says

4 years 1 month ago

Microsoft is going to push its smartphone-style All Access subscription program for the Xbox Series X launch later this year. Speaking to IGN, Spencer said Microsoft is looking to "go big" with Xbox All Access for the launch of the Xbox Series X later this year.

In fact, Spencer used the plural, saying Microsoft will "go big with [Xbox All Access] at the launch of the consoles." He might have simply misspoke, or he might have been referring to Microsoft's previously discussed plan to launch more than one next-generation console this year.

In addition to the Xbox Series X, Microsoft is reportedly working on a lower-cost next-gen Xbox under the codename Lockhart. The "Series X" name designates the model name of the next-gen Xbox, which leaves room for Microsoft to release more next-generation consoles beyond the one we know about.

The Best Switch Controller (April 2020): Pro Controllers, Fight Sticks, And More

4 years 1 month ago

Back when the Nintendo Switch console first released in March 2017, I started looking for the best Nintendo Switch controller to make all my games play just a bit better. While the current model (which sports improved battery life over the launch model) is great, the tiny, flat Joy-Cons at the console's sides leave something to be desired (at least the Switch Lite has an actual D-Pad). Thankfully, Switch players have all kinds of options when it comes to Nintendo Switch accessories. Whether you prefer to play the Nintendo Switch console with a PS4 or Xbox One controller, play using the Joy-Cons while they're charging, or just love gaming on the go, there's an accessory tailor-made for you. You can even make the console more comfortable by improving the grip on the console itself, so you don't drop it and damage the screen (though you should probably still get a tempered glass screen protector, just in case).

The official Nintendo Pro controller is still the best Nintendo Switch controller for the console overall (it has a great battery perfect for long gaming stints, easy charging, and can be used with a Nintendo Switch dock or even if you're using the console in tabletop mode), but it's also somewhat pricey. But even if you're looking for something else, we're on the case.

Call Of Duty: Modern Warfare's Multiplayer Is Free To Play Right Now

4 years 1 month ago

Call of Duty: Modern Warfare's battle royale spin-off, Warzone, has been immensely popular, but if you've wanted to try the core game's regular multiplayer modes, then you have your chance right now. Modern Warfare's multiplayer will be free until April 6 at 10 AM PT / 1 PM ET. That's only three days, but even if you don't end up buying the full game, it's a good opportunity to level up your weapons and create some loadouts for Warzone--all of your Warzone purchases and levels also carry over to multiplayer.

Anyone who has already downloaded Warzone can simply select the "Multiplayer" option from the main menu to access the free multiplayer weekend. If you don't currently have Warzone, then be sure to download it soon, so you can play as much as possible. Unfortunately, if you want to keep playing Modern Warfare's multiplayer past the free weekend, it looks like you'll need to pay full price--no discounts have been revealed as of yet.

One of this weekend's available playlists includes "Stocked Up, Locked Down," which rotates between 10v10 Atlas Superstore and 6v6 Shoothouse maps through modes like Team Deathmatch, Domination, and more--unfortunately, the April Fool's Day playlists have been removed. Other game modes you can expect include the 64v64 Ground War game type and Gunfight, the latter of which is a 2v2, last-man-standing battle. It's incredibly tense and is perfect to take on with a friend.

Rainbow Six Siege's Ying Is Becoming A More Offensive Spearhead Thanks To New Patch

4 years 1 month ago

Ubisoft has revealed the Operator changes for Rainbow Six Siege in Update Y5S1.2. In this update, five Operators are being adjusted--Ying, Jäger, Mozzie, Buck, and Goyo--with Ying getting a noticeable buff to up her utility in combat. A few guns are getting balance changes too.

In a the update's patch notes, Ubisoft writes that the update replaces Ying's claymore (which recently replaced her frag grenades) with smoke grenades, a change the developer hopes will "increase the level of synergy she deploys when spearheading" the attacking team's assault, specifically when it comes to circumventing Mira's Black Mirrors or Goyo's Volcàn Shields.

The update also ups the damage on Ying's T-95 LSW light machine gun from 43 to 46 and the number of Candelas she has from three to four. Both changes should help her both disorient and deal out damage more quickly, which in turn will likely increase her utility both as the first one to breach an enemy's team defenses and her likelihood of winning a one-on-one duel.

Rainbow Six Siege Devs Talk Balancing And Why Pushing Players "Out Of Their Comfort Zone" Can Be Good

4 years 1 month ago

Ubisoft has clarified its stance on balancing Rainbow Six Siege for the game's professional players, specifically what it meant by earlier stating, "if professional players are not happy with our proposed features, then that means we are going in the right direction." In a blog post for the in-game Operator adjustments in update Y5S1.2, Ubisoft said it merely wanted to convey that it's the developer's job to push Siege's playerbase out of its comfort zone on occasion.

"It is true that part of our balancing efforts is to push every player, professionals included, out of their comfort zone," Ubisoft wrote. "This does not mean we are going about things to be intentionally frustrating for these players, but instead make adjustments to ensure our professional players are the best at the game as a whole, and not a specific update or meta. We also have to consider the entire player-base, and while some aspects of professional play will trickle down to general matchmaking, not all do (Goyo for example)."

In regards to Goyo, the Ember Rise Operator has a low pick and low win rate. Apparently, not many casual players see much utility in placing booby-trapped deployable shields--which makes a lot of sense given that they can be just as big of a detriment to Goyo's fellow defenders as to the opposing attackers.

Resident Evil 3 Remake's Best Mode Is Hidden

4 years 1 month ago

The Resident Evil 3 remake sticks very close to the original's action-focused take on survival horror. While this can give you a greater feeling of control in your struggle to survive the hordes of undead, the game can often feel like it leans too heavily on action, resulting in encounters that aren't very scary. While Resident Evil 3's campaign is brief, and the game doesn't have much in the way of bonus content, completing the story on Hardcore difficulty opens up a new difficulty mode that feels closer to a survival horror experience--presenting RE3 at its best.

After completing Hardcore mode, which is the hard mode available from the beginning and which has more aggressive enemies, RE3 will open up a bonus difficulty called Nightmare. Essentially a "very hard" mode, it includes tougher enemies and less ammo and reshuffles item locations. Those changes are already a lot to deal with, but what makes Nightmare mode so interesting are the remixed enemy encounters. In addition to throwing more zombies at you, tougher monsters appear much earlier, and Nemesis is far more aggressive and faster than before. My Nightmare mode playthrough, which rounded out to about four hours, offered a more worthwhile approach to RE3's survival horror, that actively placed more pressure on me as it went on.

One of the reasons why survival horror is so effective is that it actively creates an air of uncertainty, of not knowing what awaits around the corner. This feeling will inevitably be diminished once you've gotten an understanding of the dangers in each environment, especially on repeat playthroughs. What I appreciated most about Nightmare mode is that it almost immediately lets you know that things aren't going to be the same this time around.

Amazon Prime Day Reportedly Delayed Due To Coronavirus Pandemic

4 years 1 month ago

Since 2015, Amazon has held its massive Prime Day sale in July each year, offering big discounts on thousands of products on its storefront, including great deals on PS4, Xbox One, and Switch games. But it looks like this year's Prime Day will miss its expected July date due to the coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic.

Reuters has reported that it viewed "internal meeting notes" revealing Prime Day will be delayed until August at the earliest. Given the fact that Amazon is currently prioritizing shipping household and health items, it's not surprising that a sale featuring a significant number of non-essential items across categories like tech and entertainment would be delayed. Last month, Amazon announced it was suspending stock shipments to its warehouses for non-essential goods until April 5.

Amazon doesn't reveal dates for its events--including Prime Day--until right before the sales begin, so it's possible we won't learn the new Prime Day window for months. The retailer declined to comment on Reuters' report.

Xbox Highlights Upcoming Indies With New "Spotlight" Series

4 years 1 month ago

As the coronavirus pandemic has scuttled all public gatherings, companies have been moving their announcements and press events online. Microsoft has announced that as part of its effort, it is hosting a series of indie showcases called ID@Xbox Spotlight.

"Given the global situation right now, of course, we're not able to show off games to press and players in person, so we're excited to announce a new series of videos on the ID@Xbox YouTube Channel that will highlight independent developers--ID@Xbox Spotlight," the company said in a blog post.

As part of the announcement, Microsoft unveiled six Spotlight videos to highlight a wide array of games, some of which were just announced for Xbox One in these presentations for the first time. The videos cover a large selection of games, but Microsoft boasts that it has more than 1,600 games in development through its digital indie publishing program.

Tarantula Farming In Animal Crossing Is Broken Because Of A Pesky New Critter

4 years 1 month ago

Animal Crossing: New Horizons has only been out for two weeks, but players quickly found a way to exploit spawns for valuable bugs to get rich. One of these money-making schemes involved farming tarantulas, the semi-rare and nocturnal arachnid that are worth 8,000 bells each if you can catch them. But the arrival of brand new bugs for the month of April has also meant new competition for the profitable tarantula--the giant water bug is here and it's ruining Animal Crossing's tarantula island.

We have a whole guide on tarantula farming, but the gist of it is this: you head to a deserted island via Mystery Tour and clear out all the resources like rocks, trees, stumps, and flowers. This removes spawn conditions for other bugs, which will force the tarantula to spawn more than usual. Previously, players didn't have to worry about bodies of water on their deserted island, because in the Northern Hemisphere at least, there were no seasonal bugs that spawned on water. Enter: the giant water bug.
