Monster Hunter World: Iceborne's New Update Is Live, Alatreon Battle Coming In May

4 years 1 month ago

Click to watch embedded media

A long adventure in a fantasy world sounds like a good distraction right now. If you haven't ventured into Monster Hunter World yet, or its massive Iceborne expansion, now is a good time to do so. Conversely, if you've already gone through all of the content, you may want to check out the new title update that hit PlayStation 4 and Xbox One today. The PC version gets the update on April 8.

The update introduces two monster variations: Furious Rajang and Raging Brachydios. Both of these battles are for high-level hunters. Furious Rajang is more powerful than its standard counterpart, can pin hunters, and also can fire off new medium and long-range attacks. The beast also doesn't have as many weak spots. Raging Brachydios is coated in dangerous slime and can trap hunters. Defeating these beasts produces materials that you can use to craft new Palico weapons, armors, and gear.

The update also introduces layered weapons. Capcom says the layered weapons "alter the appearance of weapons without impacting their stats." Players will find even more layered weapon designs arriving in April. Additionally, players have a chance to receive rare decorations through Carved Feystones when helping other hunters with Assignments, and regular quests offer King Armor Spheres as rewards. You can also kick unwanted monsters out of a region with something called the Banishing Ball. Sounds useful.

PlayStation 5 Will Play "Almost All" Of The Top 100 PlayStation 4 Games At Launch [Update]

4 years 1 month ago

Update: In a recent clarification on the original PlayStation Blog post, Sony noted that the number of PS4 games expected to be supported through backward compatibility is much higher than PS5 lead system architect Mark Cerny's initial comments made it appear.

"We believe that the overwhelming majority of the 4,000+ PS4 titles will be playable on PS5," the post says. "We’re expecting backward compatible titles will run at a boosted frequency on PS5 so that they can benefit from higher or more stable frame rates and potentially higher resolutions. We’re currently evaluating games on a title-by-title basis to spot any issues that need adjustment from the original software developers."

Sony also notes that further updates on backward compatibility will be coming in the months ahead, along with more details about the PS5.

Original Story (posted 3/18/20, 12:05pm): During today's "Road to PS5" presentation, PS5 lead system architect Mark Cerny ran through a lot of technical details regarding Sony's upcoming hardware. Though the event seemed geared more towards developers than consumers, it did clarify some information about one of the topics gamers are passionate about: backwards compatibility.

Resident Evil 3 Brings Back The Knife Run

4 years 1 month ago

Knife-only runs have been a staple of Capcom’s community since the original Resident Evil on PlayStation. During these playthroughs, fans challenge themselves to complete various Resident Evil games using only the knife as their offensive weapon – no guns allowed.

A successful knife run is challenging and requires an intimate knowledge of the Resident Evil game being attempted. Unfortunately, knife runs were basically impossible in the remake of Resident Evil 2 because knives in that game would break. This was because knives were used as a defensive weapon that would prevent zombies from biting you. Some would argue that this made knives more valuable, but it had the unfortunate consequence of killing the knife run.

“We kept the knife inexhaustible [in Resident Evil 3], so you can use it forever,” says producer Peter Fabiano. “We're dealing with survival horror and everything is exhaustible. You run out of bullets. You run out of herbs. You run out of all the items you can use. So if you did run out of everything, what would you have? The knife. The director always wanted to make it so that you at least have your trusty knife. That’s always something you can rely on.”

Capcom went on to clarify that they are aware that hardcore fans like challenging themselves to knife-only runs, and that it has tested knife-only playthroughs in the office. The studio says that it's not easy, but some members on the team have completed the remake of Resident Evil 3 with only a knife.

Personally, I stick with the shotgun.

Prime 1 Studio Is Releasing A $2,400 Doom Eternal Statue

4 years 1 month ago

Standing in at 43 inches in height, Prime 1 Studio's Doom Slayer statue will likely jump out in any room you put it in. This statue is a part of Prime 1's Museum Masterline collection. If $2,399 is too steep of a price for you, Prime 1 is offering two additional versions with less bells and whistles.

The standard version is $1,799, features an LED light-up helmet, and base. The deluxe version is $1,999 and comes with the same things, along with two interchangeable right arms: one holding the Crucible, and another with either the Super Shotgun or Plasma Rifle. The ultimate edition comes with everything from the deluxe edition, along with another interchangeable right arm that can hold the BFG 9000, heavy cannon, or chainsaw.

The base reflects the end of a battle, with various skulls and the remains of a Pinky at the Slayer's feet. Preorders are open now, but the statue won't ship June 2021 at the earliest. You can see more images below.

Trainers Can Now Take On Pokémon Go's Paid Genesect Research Challenge

4 years 1 month ago

Niantic has made changes to Pokémon Go to adapt to the COVID-19 pandemic – including numerous ways to keep people from gathering in one location – and the latest paid challenge reflects this. I'm beginning my quest and I'm having no problem working through the goals from my home.

If players purchase the $7.99 ticket for the Special Research Task "A Drive to Investigate," they'll have between now and March 23 at 10 p.m. local time to finish it. Unlike previous tasks, this one is streamlined to feats you can handle from home, including catching element-based Pokémon, playing with your buddy, and battling other trainers (which you can do through the Battle league). To catch the elemental Pokémon, I recommend using incense to create more spawns. A huge supply of incense can be purchased in the store right now for just one gold, and they each last for an hour (opposed to the usual 30 minutes).

You'll only need to complete four of the five tasks to reach the Genesect encounter, although the fifth task gives you 10 extra Genesect candies. Good luck with the quest, trainers, and have fun!

10 Spoiler-Free Tips For Starting Animal Crossing: New Horizons

4 years 1 month ago

With Nintendo’s latest laid-back life simulation finally available today, players all over the world will be picking up Animal Crossing: New Horizons and escaping to an idyllic island paradise. The game is excellent (read our review), but it is also a slow burn that takes a while to introduce all of its systems. If you want a little guidance to help point you in the right direction – especially if this is your first Animal Crossing – these spoiler-free tips will give you a nudge without ruining any of the wonder.

Rocks are ridiculously important
If you haven’t played Animal Crossing before (which I hadn’t), you may not know that large rocks on the ground are far more than decorative scenery. They are part of your regular routine; every day, you can whack each rock several times with a shovel or axe to shake loose some goodies. This process is your major source of clay, stone, and iron (and occasionally gold), which are important ingredients in crafting. Plus, one rock per day is hiding a few thousand bells, so you should definitely prioritize this chore early on.

How To Make Money In Animal Crossing: New Horizons

4 years 1 month ago

There’s a bit of tension within the Animal Crossing games. On the one hand, you have relatively free rein to explore a town, make friends, and live life as you see fit. On the other hand, you start out with a fairly sizable debt to Tom Nook. You can choose to whittle that debt down little by little or ignore it altogether. Those are certainly options, but I prefer to focus on paying it off as quickly as I can. I don’t like having that number hanging over my head, and, more importantly, I like having all the housing upgrades that come with solvency – even if they mean more debt. Here’s how I’ve been paying off my expenses in New Horizons.

The early game

New Horizons starts out with a slightly different proposition: You don’t pay off your initial travel expenses with bells (Animal Crossing’s currency). Instead, you redeem Nook Miles at a kiosk in his tent. These miles can be earned by completing challenges, which are highlighted on your new phone. This portion of the game is quite self-explanatory. You’re essentially rewarded for nearly everything, and the miles will come pouring in. There are several simple ones that require virtually no effort, too. Do these if you’re looking for some easy ways to earn miles in the beginning that may not be quite so obvious.

Disaster Report 4 Demo Is Now On PlayStation 4 And Switch

4 years 1 month ago

Given what's going on in the world right now, inviting players into a different disaster scenario may not seem like the best idea, but the Disaster Report series has always been about people helping each other out, and we could use a lot of that right now. You can get a taste of what's to come in Disaster Report 4: Summer Memories through a playable demo that just released on PlayStation 4 and Switch.

Disaster Report 4 begins with a catastrophic earthquake striking Tokyo. As you work your way to safety, you will meet other people along the way and will have to make choices as to how you interact with them. You can see some of those interactions in the trailer below. Publisher NIS America hopes to have the full game in your hands on April 7 for PC, Switch, and PlayStation 4.

Play Assassin's Creed Odyssey For Free This Weekend

4 years 1 month ago

Click to watch embedded media

For those of you who aren't going anywhere this weekend, Ubisoft has a great game for you to check out this weekend. Running from March 19 through March 22, you'll be able to download and play Assassin's Creed Odyssey for free on your Xbox One, PlayStation 4, and PC. If you buy the game after the free period, all progress made during it carries over.

All players who login this weekend will get Ezio's Roman armor set for free. This armor is available to people who are downloading Odyssey for the first time, as well as longtime players who are returning to the game. The armor is unlocked through Ubisoft Club, and includes the Milanese Sword.

If you are playing on PlayStation 4, you won't be able to earn Trophies during the free period, and should you purchase the game afterword, if you want them, you'll have to replay those sections of the game that the trophies are associated with. Due to what Ubisoft calls "technical mumbo jumbo," Epic Game Store players will have to re-download the entire game if they upgrade to the full version.

For more details on all versions, check out Ubisoft's official Assassin's Creed website.

How Resident Evil 3 Made Nemesis Scarier Than Mr. X

4 years 1 month ago

Mr. X was the breakout star of Capcom’s Resident Evil 2 remake. That trench coat-clad, paleface monster looked a bit absurd, but we stopped laughing as soon as he started chasing us through the halls of Raccoon City’s police station. The remake of Resident Evil 3 has an intimidating Tyrant of its own, but this creature will be an even bigger part of the experience. If Capcom has its way, Nemesis will put Mr. X shame.

“The fact that he's this hulking mass constantly chasing after you make him pretty scary,” says producer Peter Fabiano. “The fact that he can use weapons, the fact that once he appears he's going to be constantly in your face trying to get at you, and the fact that he can use his tentacles to grab you all makes him incredibly formidable. We wanted to make him feel imposing and I think that comes through in his movements and his appearance. His appearance is something that we put a lot of time and effort into, trying to get just right.”

Cover Reveal – Resident Evil 3

4 years 1 month ago

Resident Evil is an industry staple, but the series’ earliest entries are hard to revisit, which is why Capcom has been diligently remaking these classic adventures for the modern era. Unlike most remakes, Capcom’s Resident Evil series gets more than a facelift. These new games have been reimagined from the ground up with new environments, gameplay mechanics, and puzzles. Capcom’s newest remake, Resident Evil 3, stars series vet Jill Valentine as she races through Raccoon City’s streets during the zombie outbreak. Unfortunately, a towering bioweapon called Nemesis is always just a few steps behind her and always ready to make her life difficult at every turn.

For issue 324 of Game Informer Magazine, we went hands-on with Resident Evil 3 and played through an exclusive segment of the game starring Umbrella's mercenary Carlos Oliveira. We talked with Capcom’s producers and art team about how they reenvisioned Raccoon City and the monstrous Nemesis for this generation. Finally, we include our thoughts from our time with Resident Evil 3’s Resistance mode, a 4v1 asymmetrical multiplayer game that is more fun than we expected and worth revisiting when Resident Evil 3 releases in April.

Where's Our Doom Eternal Review?

4 years 1 month ago

Doom Eternal's review embargo is up, but the multiplayer servers are not online, meaning critics haven't been able to play any of Battlemode yet. For this reason alone, I won't post Game Informer's Doom Eternal review until I get the chance to explore what this avenue of play has to offer.

Battlemode promises to be quite different than Doom's traditional multiplayer offerings, and is designed as an asymmetrical multiplayer experience that pits a player-controlled Doom Slayer against two player-controlled demons. The concept is cool, and playing as bad guys is always fun, yet developer id Software and publisher Bethesda Softworks weren't able to find a way to get it in front of me for the review. From what I can tell from Battlemode's menu, it appears to be a fairly substantial experience, with plenty of unlockables, like skins for the Slayer, demons, and weapons, as well as victory poses and more.

Now the good news: Doom Eternal's single-player campaign is bloody brilliant, and just keeps getting better as it goes. I adored 2016's reimagining of Doom, and this sequel absolutely crushes it. The gunplay is electrifying and loaded with depth. With a wide selection of weapons and gadgets to cycle between, and heightened environment traversal, the Slayer rips across the battlefield like an acrobat who has gone nuclear. He's a sight to behold and fun as hell to control.

Animal Crossing: New Horizons Is The Most Welcoming Game I’ve Played In Years

4 years 1 month ago

I love playing life sims. I enjoy how the genre transmutes low-stakes routines into compelling loops and satisfying progress, all in a peaceful domestic package. However, despite being a longtime fan of The Sims and Harvest Moon series (and sinking hundreds of hours into Stardew Valley across various platforms), I never gave Animal Crossing a fair shot. I resolved to change that with Animal Crossing: New Horizons. When we were sent copies of the game, I dove in to act as support for Jeff Cork (whose review you can read right here), but I was not prepared for how completely absorbing this world is. Both thematically and mechanically, Animal Crossing: New Horizons is among the most welcoming games I’ve ever played.

Resident Evil 3 Demo Coming Soon

4 years 1 month ago

Click here to watch embedded media

Capcom has announced two separate chances for you to get your hands on Resident Evil 3 before it comes out on April 3 (PS4, Xbox One, and PC).

The game's demo – featuring Jill Valentine, Carlos Oliveira, and a terrifying Nemesis – is out this Thursday, March 19 (12 a.m. Eastern on Xbox One and 1 p.m. Eastern on PS4/PC).

The demo also includes an exclusive, post-completion cinematic trailer, as well as an interesting side challenge: Twenty Mr. Charlie statues are strewn throughout the demo for you to find (with an onscreen counter that keeps track of your tally). There's no word on what will be your reward if you get them all.

Resident Evil 3 includes the Resident Evil Resistance multiplayer online component, where a single player-controlled mastermind tries to wipe out four players in a certain amount of time by unleashing bioweapons and setting traps.

Capcom is starting an open beta for Resistance, starting on March 27 (3 a.m. Eastern on PS4/Xbox One and 1 p.m. Eastern on PC) that runs until the game launches on April 3. Participants can play as Daniel Fabron, one of the four masterminds in the mode, and one of four of the final game's six survivors.

For more on the game, check out our hands-on impressions in this episode of New Gameplay Today.

Microsoft Reveals The Power Of Xbox Series X

4 years 1 month ago

Today on Xbox Wire, Microsoft revealed the full specs for Xbox Series X, and let Digital Foundry and Austin Evans take this powerful hardware for a test drive. The hardware used for these hands-on sessions isn't the final model that will ship to retail, but Microsoft is clearly comfortable enough at this point to say this is what the Series X will be.

The tests highlight the power of Series X, which Digital Foundry points out is "capable of running four Xbox One S game sessions simultaneously on the same chip." In the video below you can see just how much faster Series X can load games.

Click here to watch embedded media

We're still going to get some load times, sadly, but they are dramatically reduced on Series X.

Xbox Wire's Editor-in-Chief Will Tuttle also broke down how Quick Resume works. "Since game states will be stored directly in the system’s SSD, they’ll even persist after you turn off the console, unplug it entirely, or even take a system update," he wrote. "One of the testers on the team unplugged his console for a week, then took an update, and was still able to continue right where he left off without so much as a loading screen." You can also see this feature in play in the video below:

Where Is Our Persona 5 Royal Review?

4 years 1 month ago

Persona 5 Royal hits later this month, but you may be seeing some reviews around the internet right now. However, this is a long RPG (over 100 hours), and I haven't reached the end yet. One of the key selling points of this enhanced edition is a whole new semester at the end of the narrative, so I want to be sure to experience that before I render my final verdict.

However, with around 75 hours put into the game, I am sure that Royal delivers the best way to experience Persona 5. The new interactions, confidants, and palace additions give more context to the story and fun ways to further connect with the world. I really like Kasumi and Maruki, two new confidants introduced in Royal. These characters not only add interesting and endearing conversations and scenes, but they give you meaningful upgrades and stat boosts for ranking them up. However, I am disappointed and confused about why Kasumi only has 5 ranks instead of the normal 10 for confidants.

If Kasumi eventually joins your party as a full-fledged Phantom Thief, I haven't gotten there yet. I'll have to wait to see what happens, but don't expect to have a brand new party member injecting new life into the group dynamic anywhere in the first 3/4 of the game. Additionally, while I love most of the changes to the palaces and palace bosses, the worst palace of the original game (I won't spoil it here, but if you played Persona 5, you know the one) is actually made even worse thanks to some alterations.

We went live earlier, but you can still catch the full archive above. If you can't get enough Replay and our other shows, remember to subscribe on YouTubeTwitchMixerTwitter, or Facebook to get notified when we go live each week! Thanks and enjoy the show!
