Nintendo Confirms Breach Of 160,000 Nintendo Network ID Accounts

Nintendo has acknowledged the breach of approximately 160,000 Nintendo Network IDs earlier this month, resulting in the possible exposure of some users' personal data such as their nickname, date of birth, and email.

As a result, Nintendo has disabled the ability to login to Nintendo accounts via a Nintendo Network ID for the time being.

Although credit card information was not a part of the breach, some users have reported unauthorized purchases through the linked payment methods associated with their accounts.

Nintendo is currently investigating the matter, and it has no evidence that Nintendo's databases, services, or servers have been breached.

The company says it will contact people with affected accounts to reset their passwords, and recommends that all users use two-factor authentication on their account to notify them of any unauthorized access.

Elijah Wood's Animal Crossing Visit Is As Delightful As You Would Expect

Actor Elijah Wood is known for many of his movie roles, none more memorable than Frodo in The Lord of the Rings trilogy. Right now during the COVID-19 pandemic, his best role is Elwood in Animal Crossing. Wood is clearly a big player of the game, and according to an Entertainment Weekly story, even took to Twitter to find the best turnip prices out there. Wood ended up replying to a tweet of Jessica Kovalick, who took snapshots of her Twitter exchange with Wood along with the time he spent on her island.

Wood didn't just come to make a profit off of his turnips. He spent time chatting with Kovalick, and was incredibly polite, asking if he could pick some fruit.

With Fortnite, you never know what to expect next. Thanos could appear in the world out of the blue or the entire game could be rendered unplayable because it was sucked into a black hole. Developer Epic Games has worked wonders with its events, often surprising players with them when they least expect to have their game upended. A few days ago, we reported Travis Scott was going to debut a new song through a musical event Epic Games dubbed "an other-worldly experience." The event is over and it fit Epic's billing perfectly. Fortnite is becoming quite the stage for reveals, whether it's for movies like Star Wars or music like Travis Scott's.

The production values for this musical experience were through the roof, putting on a show of enormous scale that was filled with color and style. You just have to see it for yourself. The tweet below gives you a brief highlight reel and you can see the entire event in the video above.

Microsoft Says We'll Learn About Xbox Series X Games Soon

Through Xbox Series X, Microsoft is launching its next-generation of video games later this year. We know of the Series X's power and base capabilities, but we don't know much about the games that will be adapted for this high-end hardware. From Microsoft's first-party efforts, Halo Infinite will launch with the Series X, and Senua's Saga: Hellblade II is in development for it.

In terms of ports, Microsoft showed off a little bit of how Gears 5 and other titles will be improved on the platform. From third-party developers, Ubisoft has a slate of games moving to next-gen machines, and CD Projekt Red says a next-gen version of Cyberpunk 2077 is also on the way. That's all we've really heard thus far. If system launches of old are a guide for Series X, there should be plenty of other games ready for launch day and even more within the launch window.

Iratus: Lord of the Dead Leaves Early Access Today On PC

Unfrozen's Iratus: Lord of the Dead leaves early access today on Steam. If you haven't heard of it, it draws plenty of inspiration from Darkest Dungeon with one major catch - you're the bad guy.

Instead of taking on misshapen dungeon denizens, you craft an undead army (quite literally, by assembling horrible creatures from parts) and take on those that would attempt to stop your necromantic rise to power.

Eliminate your enemies through traditional combat or by embracing fear mechanics to send your enemies fleeing in terror. Build up a base to keep your progress going, even when your minions end up being smashed into dust by the forces of good.

Rocket League Is The Right Game For Right Now

Rocket League needs no introduction. It’s car soccer. You don’t need to know much more than that, other than it’s one of the most popular competitive games out there, and a car flying through the air is an awesome spectacle. While I can’t say enough good things about Rocket League, I never really got into it. I played a few matches here and there, went pro in it for an evening, and then moved on to other games. My competitive gaming diet usually needs guns. Call of Duty, Overwatch, Battlefield, the list goes on and on.

Since 2016, Overwatch has been THE game for my competitive needs. While I can’t say I play it every night, it’s not a stretch to say I play it most nights. I have a great group of friends who join me for almost every session. I look forward to the competition we face and the bonding between us. They are the nicest group of guys I know, and while we get along great, once an Overwatch match starts, the competitive juices take over and our lively banter becomes intense and focused. There’s some finger pointing that comes with it, but we’re usually a well-oiled and polite machine.

Update: It's Probably Okay To Play Counter-Strike and Team Fortress 2 Right Now

Update: 4/22/2020

Valve has issued a statement regarding the leak, saying they are investigating things but that they currently have no reason for players to be alarmed or to discontinue play of the titles in question. Valve commented: We have reviewed the leaked code and believe it to be a reposting of a limited CS:GO engine code depot released to partners in late 2017, and originally leaked in 2018. From this review, we have not found any reason for players to be alarmed or avoid the current builds (as always, playing on the official servers is recommended for greatest security). We will continue to investigate the situation and will update news outlets and players if we find anything to prove otherwise. In the meantime, if anyone has more information about the leak, the Valve security page (https://www.valvesoftware.com/en/security)

Firaxis On How Chimera Squad Ties Into The Larger XCOM Universe

Last week, Firaxis surprised us with the announcement of a new standalone XCOM game. You won’t have to wait long to play this unique spinoff, but since the game is a bit of a departure for the series, we chatted with lead designer Mark Nauta about the origins of the project and how XCOM: Chimera Squad is canonically tied to the rest of the franchise.

What were some of the elements and challenges you got excited to tackle with Chimera Squad?

Nauta: After releasing XCOM 2 and the War of the Chosen expansion, we felt there were still gameplay possibilities that had yet to be discovered or explored within XCOM, and tackling them together allowed us to explore some of the fundamentals of XCOM without having to rebalance the entire game and its expansions.

Valve's Artifact Is Getting An Overhaul, Includes A Single-Player Campaign

Valve's digital card game Artifact hasn't had any meaningful updates since it released, but now with "Artifact 2.0" on the horizon, Valve has dropped a little information about how the game is being changed and renovated for a second chance at greatness.

While some of us enjoyed the game quite a bit at launch, plenty of folks have been waiting to hear what changes are coming to the game - and now Valve has shared some of them! New mechanics, a shared mana pool across lanes, progression systems, and more are all covered in the latest word from Valve over on Artifact's store page on Steam.

Of particular interest is the concept of a single-player campaign that can be used as a vessel to tell some of the stories of the Dota 2 cast inside Artifact. While there's no word as to when Artifact 2.0 is rolling out, players that already own the original game are likely to be tapped for beta testing before a wide release happens.

Trademark Reveals Xbox Series X Logo

A recent Microsoft filing with the U.S. Patent and Trademark office, as discovered by a Reddit user, has revealed the logo for the Xbox Series X.

The design of the logo appears to support the persistent rumor that the Series X is one version of Microsoft's next-gen console, with a cheaper, scaled-down version coming at some point. To date Microsoft has only announced the Series X.

Trademark filings don't always come to pass, so we'll have to wait for official confirmation from Microsoft on the logo.

The Xbox Series X is due this holiday season.

Ravens' QB Lamar Jackson Is The Madden NFL 21 Cover Star

Last year Madden NFL 20 cover star Patrick Mahomes shattered any notion of a Madden cover star Curse by leading his team, the Kansas City Chiefs, to a Super Bowl title. Now, it looks like Baltimore Ravens star QB and the NFL 2019 league MVP Lamar Jackson wants to carry on the anti-curse by being on the cover of Madden NFL 21.

Jackson and the Ravens announced the news themselves via a video tweet, with Jackson low-key psyched about the honor. Jackson had a phenomenal 2019 season in only his second year in the league, although the Ravens lost to the Tennessee Titans in the AFC divisional round.

Madden publisher/developer Electronic Arts has not officially made its Madden 21 cover star announcement just yet, but acknowledged Jackson's leak as official.

The 2020 NFL Draft is this week, and traditionally, EA Sports uses the event to deliver some news about the upcoming late summer title, so maybe today's announcement is just the beginning.

Cover Reveal – Grounded

Obsidian has made a name for itself within the RPG space, having worked on titles including Pillars of Eternity, Fallout: New Vegas, and The Outer Worlds. A small team within the studio wanted to do something a little different with Grounded, a survival game that takes place within the confines of a single backyard. If that sounds like a small chunk of real estate for a game, there's a twist: You've been shrunken down to about a centimeter, which makes encounters with aphids, ants, and – of course – spiders, potentially deadly.

For our latest cover story, we played Grounded for several hours and had lengthy discussions with the team. We learned how they landed on its Honey, I Shrunk the Kids-like setup, what working within that tiny scale meant for its design, and how they've adapted to their new working-from-home reality.

Final Super Mario Maker 2 Update Lets You Build Your Own Worlds

Super Mario Maker 2

Since its launch last summer, Super Mario Maker 2 has received multiple free updates. These have ranged from adding new course elements and playable characters like Link to improving the online multiplayer suite through new modes and activities. Nintendo has announced the final free update for Super Mario Maker 2, which hits this week, will add the ability to string together courses into their own worlds.

World Maker mode gives you various components and themes with which to lay out your overworld map. Each world strings together multiple courses with a starting point and an end castle. World Maker mode supports up to eight worlds containing a maximum of 40 courses total, allowing players to essentially create their own Mario games from the individual courses they have or will create.

Super Mario Maker 2

For those who just want more elements to create with, Nintendo is also expanding the toolbox with myriad new course elements. Players can now add the Koopalings to courses as enemies. Each Koopaling has his or her on distinct movement pattern, giving them a unique flavor depending on which one you place in your stages.

Does Wastelanders Improve Fallout 76?

Following a problematic launch in 2018, Fallout 76 has improved over time, and its most promising expansion called Wastelanders just launched. Developer Bethesda Game Studios clearly listened to its player base for this new content, moving away from the stance of “every human in the world is another player” to littering the wasteland with NPC denizens. Players said the wasteland felt lifeless and barren, and now it has some life to it. While many of Fallout 76’s legacy issues are still front and center, having fleshed-out characters to talk to does improve the storytelling, which in turn makes the game slightly better.

Being able to stand face-to-face with the Overseer and get to know her (not to mention run and gun with her) goes a long way in breathing life into this world, and she’s just one of many new faces you’ll see as you explore and take on new quests. You’ll meet the Overseer right out of the gates (whether you are a new player or one who is returning), and are put on a mission that has you working on an inoculation for the Scorched plague, which is oddly on topic right now.

Valorant Beta Is Still Fun A Week Later

Check out my previous impressions for a sense of how I felt about Valorant when we first got a chance to play Riot’s 5v5 competitive tactical shooter.

A week later, I’m still having a blast discovering how to get the most out of abilities, barking out the names of locations on maps that I’ve now memorized to teammates, and trying to make shotguns a thing. Valorant seems to have a really great groundwork to build on, and I guess that foundation is what we’ll be watching closely when we move into the summer launch window. Sure, the stuff that’s there is fluid, fun, and “esports ready” out of the gate, but there are a number of aspects that are going to be critical to keep an eye on.

First: modes! Let’s face it. Not everyone that plays Valorant is MLG ready, and not everyone is going to want to play competitive bomb-planting wars 24/7. Asking for something like a team deathmatch is probably too much and too bizarre of a choice for a game like this that’s so heavily focused in tactical coordination, but perhaps there are other options to draw more casual players in without irritating the more hardcore base – something like co-op would do the job nicely, and let players that don’t always want a nail-biter match with twitch corner-peeking and popping have some rest and relaxation.

Star Wars Episode I: Racer Hits PS4 And Switch In May

Released more than two decades ago on Nintendo 64, Star Wars Episode I: Racer stood out to many as one of the better things to spin off of Star Wars: Episode I – The Phantom Menace. While that title would later come to other consoles, including Dreamcast, it largely disappeared until GOG brought it back on PC in 2018. It was recently announced that the podracing title would be coming to PS4 and Switch, but we finally have a date: May 12.

Star Wars Episode I: Racer features 25 playable characters including Anakin Skywalker and Sebulba, as well as tracks spanning eight different worlds. While both versions support local splitscreen multiplayer, the Switch version gives players the ability to compete in LAN races using multiple Switch consoles. As part of the updating process, Aspyr has uprezzed all of the FMV sequences in the game, remapped the controls to feel natural and responsive on modern controllers, and added Trophy support on PS4.
