Phasmophobia Is The Perfect Horror Game For Halloween

3 years 6 months ago

Click to watch embedded media

It's October and from the moment it hit the first of the month, we've been officially in Halloween mode. Whether you're looking for a new horror adventure to play for yourself or looking for one that's great for streaming, Phasmophobia is a fine pick for the month of spooks.

If the game name sounds familiar, you may have heard about it from this past weekend where this horror adventure skyrocketed to Twitch fame with averaging a viewership of over 100,000 concurrently. While that number has dipped a little bit now that the workweek has started, it's still a vibrant and active hub over on Twitch and for good reason.

It's important to note that Phasmophobia is an Early Access title on Steam, so bugs? You're going to run into them. Its graphics aren't the greatest and the mechanics can go from good to "what the heck just happened" really quick, but still? It's stupidly addictive and a large part of that is because of how this game sets up for playing with friends.

Quarantine Has Made Video Games About More Than Escapism

3 years 6 months ago

Video games are an escapist medium. That's what everyone always says. And it's true! They allow us to be whoever or whatever we want, no matter the realm of possibility. Wizards, monsters, survivors in the post-apocalypse, anthropomorphic marsupials named Crash – we can be anything. We can escape our day-to-day routines and problems, and we can live a life beyond our wildest expectations.

In 2020, this is perhaps essential. Between COVID-19, election season, and a constant barrage of bad news, reality is bleak. Exacerbating everything is the fact that, you can’t really leave your house unless you can help it, due to the risk of spreading or catching the virus. There has perhaps never been a better time in modern history to want to escape into the fantasy worlds of video games to just give ourselves a break from it all.

But despite all of this, I find myself wanting to draw my time in quarantine out, to make time go slower. I’m still escaping in a way, but not in the ways I used to. Rather than hide in a make-believe world by myself, I want to inhabit worlds with other people, I want to live in those moments and conversations.

Jurassic World Evolution Looks Quite Good On Switch

3 years 6 months ago

Click here to watch embedded media

Frontier Developments is launching Jurassic World Evolution on Switch as a "Complete Edition" on November 3. This bundle includes the core game, the DLC standalone adventures (Return to Jurassic Park and Claire's Sanctuary), and The Secrets of Dr. Wu DLC quest that adds wild dinosaur hybrids. All of the add-on dino packs and skin variants are also included. Basically, everything you can get your hands on in the PC and console versions is here, and it all looks quite good running on the Switch.

In a 40-minute demo I saw, the dino textures look a little muddied and some trees pop in as you fly over the park, but otherwise it looks like it runs quite smooth, allowing players to build the dino parks of their dreams. The one big change is that players can only have 100 dinosaurs in a park at once. Given the size of the maps, you likely will never hit this unless you are messing around in sandbox mode, but it is the one gameplay difference that you'll see when you are playing either on the go or on a TV. The font size is the same (and is said to be readable in handheld mode) and the load times looked to be clocking in around the same length as the console versions.

A Frontier spokesperson wouldn't reveal if more content is on the way for the game, both on the Switch and the other platforms, but did say that if something were added at a later date – even a bug-fix patch – it would reach the Switch version on the same day.

PSVR Is Backwards Compatible With PS5, But You'll Need A Different Camera

3 years 6 months ago

Both the PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X/S are killing it when it comes to backwards compatibility, including in the realm of VR. While PSVR will work on PS5, including PS4 VR games with it, there is one oddity that players should keep in mind: the PS5 camera won't work with it. And you'll need a PS4 DualShock controller.

In order to use PSVR, players will need the headset, the Move Controllers, and a camera. While working on the PS5, PSVR is confirmed not to be compatible with the PS5 camera, so if you're trading in your old system make sure to keep that little tidbit for yourself.

In a recent confirmation found on the Sony FAQ page, the company confirmed that incompatibility with the updated camera:

Yes, PlayStation VR games are included among the thousands of PS4 games that are playable on PS5. Please note that playing PS VR games on a PS5 console requires a PS VR headset, DualShock 4 wireless controller or PlayStation Move controller(s), and PS Camera (for PS4), which are sold separately from the PS5 console. Also, the PS5 HD Camera is not compatible with PS VR on PS5. You’ll need to use the PS Camera (for PS4), and the PS Camera adaptor (no purchase required), to use PS VR on PS5.

Mod Corner: Among Us Crashes Star Wars Battlefront II With This Mod

3 years 6 months ago

Sometimes with Mod Corner we have really helpful ways to enrich game experiences. Other times, we have shenanigans. The latest move for our mod recommendation feature falls under the latter corner with Among Us crashing yet another game: Star Wars Battlefront II.

The latest Mod Corner recommendation comes by way of Nexus user 'TheAsianRedneck'. The Among Us Star Wars experience retextures Yoda with custom Among Us models, including Red (super sus), Yellow, Black, and Blue.

It's a simple mod, nothing strenuous, and is super easy to install. Check it out in action with the video below:

Sonic The Hedgehog Skin Is Coming To Fall Guys

3 years 6 months ago

Sonic the Hedgehog skins are coming to Fall Guys for those jelly beans that 'gotta go fast.' First leaked last week, Mediatonic has confirmed that the Sonic skins are real thanks to today's Sega-themed live stream.

The Sonic skin is coming to Fall Guys on October 14, fully equipped with those iconic red shoes and white gloves. While not an exact replica, obviously, this is only the latest crossover that in-game jelly beans have seen, and it surely won't be the last.

For those that want to live out that blue fantasy, you're going to need some Crowns under your belt. Whether earned through natural progression in the game or through wins, this adorable Sonic rendition will cost a total of 10 Crowns.

From Half-Life to Portal, the crossovers will continue. It will be interesting to see where else Mediatonic takes the Fall Guys game, especially considering how quickly it skyrocketed in fame and the new season's arrival.

Ruffian Games Is Now Rockstar Dundee

3 years 6 months ago

Rockstar Games hardly needs any introduction, considering it is the company responsible for many of the industry's most successful games, like Grand Theft Auto V and Red Dead Redemption II. Such massive projects need lots of people and studios working together, and it looks like Rockstar recently acquired Ruffian Games to help with these efforts.

As reported by TheGamer, Ruffian Games (located in Dundee, Scotland) was officially purchased and renamed Rockstar Dundee. Information points to the two companies collaborating as early as last year, but in the meantime, the acquisition was completed and the name change finalized last week on October 6.

Ni No Kuni Developer Level-5 Allegedly Ends Operations In North America

3 years 6 months ago

According to GamesIndustry.biz sources, Ni no Kuni and Yo-Kai Watch developer Level-5 has been phasing out its North American studios since Summer 2019. The Level-5 International America and Level-5 Abby studios were hit with substantial layoffs last year.

In July 2019, Level-5 International America closed its design department and, earlier this year, Level-5 Abby COO Yukari Hayakawa was said to have stepped down from the company. As of right now, Level-5 has not publicly announced any future North American releases, which begs the question: Have North American operations stopped completely?

Personally, I don't have much experience with Level 5's Yo-Kai Watch series, but the two Ni no Kuni games were heart-warming Studio Ghibli-informed experiences with great characters and solid combat. While nothing has been confirmed, I'm hoping that Level-5 still plans to release their games in the West.

Third-person MOBA Smite has had some really wacky crossovers in the past, including an Avatar: The Last Airbender battle pass. Now, the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles are coming over in the same fashion, with the pizza-loving shelled heroes becoming skins for classic Smite characters.

Osiris gets a Leonardo skin, Sun Wukong can become Donatello, Loki becomes Raphael, and Mercury shows off a Michelangelo skin. What about Splinter and Shredder?

The battle pass featuring the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles is scheduled to land in November! Check out the trailer below.

Amazon Games Pulls The Plug On Crucible

3 years 6 months ago

Amazon Games is shutting down Crucible's servers on November 9. The free-to-play hero shooter has been out for a little under 6 months. Despite its three, vastly different multiplayer modes and extensive cast, Crucible had difficulties finding success as well as a large-scale, dedicated playerbase. Amazon Games promises that players who have purchased Crucible microtransactions will, ultimately, be refunded.

We enjoyed Crucible's moment-to-moment engagements for the most part, but felt that many of its highlights weren't very memorable. Amazon Games' Crucible was slated to be a substantial first foray into game development. With this sudden cancellation, it's hard to speculate what Amazon Games' plans are for the future.

The Outer Worlds 2 Rumored To Be In The Works

3 years 6 months ago

The Outer Worlds 2 looks to be in development, at least according to a recent rumor by industry insider Daniel Ahmad. With the Peril on Gorgon DLC out now for players to enjoy, this Fallout New Vegas 2 in space take could have an even brighter future ahead.

On the cusp of the announcement that The Outer Worlds will be launching on Steam soon, Ahmad took to social media to share that "a new entry in the franchise is being explored, currently in pre-production."

It's important to note that there are many games in the ideation stage, and not all of them make it off of the cutting room floor. While intriguing to see that Obsidian is reportedly looking into more Outer Worlds, a lot can change during the pre-production phase.

Silent Hill Recreated In Animal Crossing: New Horizons, Because Why Not?

3 years 6 months ago

While we don't have a new Silent Hill game announcement to share, one Animal Crossing fan put their horror spin on their island in New Horizons. Animal Crossing: New Horizons offers unlimited creativity and because of that, mashups are a pretty common occurrence. That being said, one Redditor did a pretty phenomenal job at bringing this particular horror franchise to life in the Nintendo adventure.

The below Redditor took a screenshot of their island on one particularly foggy day, equipped with the infamous "Welcome to Silent Hill" sign. With the additional Halloween flair thanks to the ongoing Fall event, this person did a pretty stellar job at making sure the atmosphere is on point. They also provided a reference look with an actual Silent Hill poster for comparison:

Welcome to Silent Hill ☠️🌑💀 from r/AnimalCrossing

This post immediately became popular on Reddit, with many Animal Crossing players asking for the OP to make this creation an uploaded town as a visitable Dream Island. For those that haven't played since Dreams invaded the game, this just means that players can visit certain dreams of other players, created by those looking to go even more outside of the lines in terms of creative contributions.

Ghost Of Tsushima On PS5 Will Achieve 60 FPS With 'Game Boost'

3 years 6 months ago

Click to watch embedded media

Sucker Punch's Ghost of Tsushima is a stunningly beautiful story that helped end the era of PS4 on an incredible note. For those interested in Sony's Game Boost feature, this is an option that will make the PS4 game even more breathtaking.

The PS5 Game Boost feature aims to improve performance of PlayStation 4 titles and Ghost of Tsushima will greatly benefit from that. For those that play this Sucker Punch title on the next generation of PlayStation, they will note a potential 60 FPS experience thanks to this particular boosting addition.

Tsushima will also be taking advantage of the PS5 SSD capabilities, insuring faster loading times for those playing.

Even more so, Sucker Punch also promises that players will be able to transfer their saves from the PlayStation 4 system to the PS5, something that is not guaranteed for all titles going into next gen. For those looking to make the jump from PS4 to PS5, this save transfer can be done via external storage or via WiFi, something Sony talked a little more about earlier today.

Are Free-To-Play Games Good Now?

3 years 6 months ago

I don’t remember exactly when I became familiar with “free-to-play” as a specific designation, but I do know that I had no interest in playing the games it applied to. From shoddy MMOs to Facebook distractions, I thought of all free-to-play games were thinly disguised attempts to siphon money from players – all while meeting only the barest possible definition of “game.” The only one I spent considerable time with was Farmville, but that was because I was writing a piece for Game Informer’s May 2010 issue that ended up being about how terrible and predatory Farmville was. After that, I generally wrote off free-to-play games.

This Fallout 4 Overhaul Mod Transforms The Common Wealth Into A Full-Fledged Horror Game

3 years 6 months ago

Click to watch embedded media

It's Halloween! Well, almost! And while there are a ton of amazing horror games out there, there is one Fallout 4 mod I can't help but to recommend for those wanting a new horror experience in a familiar place. For this week's Mod Corner, we're getting 'spoopy'.

The Fallout 4 Pilgrim: Dread of the Common Wealth mod is a complete overhaul experience that came out in 2017. It's a mod I've personally used and can't recommend enough. For those that like Fallout 4, this is a great way to jump back in while still being able to experience something new.

Click here to watch embedded media

The mod itself is inspired by the horror film The Witch and it captures that subtle horror and evil immersion perfectly. How overhaul mods work is that it's not a simple retexture, it's a complete shakeup to the game as a whole. This experience changes the weather, it completely revamps the in-game audio, and the lighting? The lighting is more than a little spooky.

Star Wars: Squadrons Studio Motive Has Several New Games In The Works

3 years 6 months ago

Earlier this week, an EA Motive dev confirmed that Star Wars: Squadrons would be getting no new additional paid content, but that doesn't mean this studio doesn't have its hands full. In a recent EA blog update, Motive's Patrick Klaus offered a little insight into what's next for this team.

When talking about the new mission for Motive, "To empower players to create, experiment, live, and share their own unique stories," Klaus also spoke a little bit about future plans. Part of living up to that new mission statement is to truly aim to be innovative, an artistic goal that is not without risk. With encouragement for all creative teams, Motive is working on "several" new games that will usher in a new era for this particular studio.

In addition to Star Wars: Squadrons, we’re also working on several unannounced projects. Innovation is tough, but it’s also exciting and energizing. With our new mission, we're trying a lot of things and testing many ideas which you can’t get attached to, as iteration and experimentation are healthy and a key to finding something great. The team is super talented and we’re all striving to make aspirational games that push the boundaries of what players expect now and into the future.

New Xbox Series X Commercial "Power Your Dreams" Stars Daniel Kaluuya

3 years 6 months ago

The next generation of gaming arrives next month and both PlayStation and Xbox camps are bringing the hype! Both the PS5 and Xbox Series X/S systems have something unique to offer for next gen, and a new commercial from Team Green aims to take that excitement even higher.

The Power Your Dreams TV spot features Black Panther's Daniel Kaluuya as a sequence of mortgages kick off. Kaluuya ventures from various worlds that will be playable when the next generation arrives, including Assassin's Creed, Halo, Destiny 2, and more!

It wouldn't be an Xbox TV spot without some Halo action, including the superhero drop Master Chief does in one scene. Despite Halo Infinite's delay (press F to pay respects), the marketing is still very much a go as the team at 343 Industry continues towards development. While not a launch title, which is what the primary focus of this commercial is about, the Halo-verse is incredibly ingrained in what Xbox is known for, it makes sense to see this IP so prominent in this video.

Full List Of PS4 Games That Will Not Work On PS5

3 years 6 months ago

The next geneneration of gaming is almost here and with backwards compatibility being a feature for both the PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X/S systems, the current generation doesn't have to be left behind. That being said, just like with Xbox, not all PS4 titles will be able to play on the new system. Here is the full list of PS4 games that you will not be able to play on the PS5 system.

PS4-only games

  • DWVR
  • Afro Samurai 2 Revenge of Kuma Volume One
  • TT Isle of Man - Ride on the Edge 2
  • Just Deal With It!
  • Shadow Complex Remastered
  • Robinson: The Journey
  • We Sing
  • Hitman Go: Definitive Edition
  • Shadwen
  • Joe's Diner

A mass majority of PlayStation 4 titles will be available to play on the PS5 systems, amassing more than 4,000 titles to choose from. In a recent post by the PlayStation Support page, Sony added "Some functionalities that were available on the PS4 console may not be available on PS5 consoles. In addition, some PS4 games may exhibit errors or unexpected behavior when played on PS5 consoles."

Valorant Unveils New Map And Character For Act III

3 years 6 months ago

Riot Games is bringing Act III to Valorant starting on October 13. Various elements of the season will roll out over time, with the brand new map hitting immediately. It's called Icebox, and it's aptly named. A frozen facility with two detonation points, the new map has a focus on skirmish gameplay.

Oh, and there's something else new on the map too — the zipline! Get vertical and get fast as you catch your opponents by surprise and speed quickly across the environment. Icebox is slated to be available on October 13.

A bit later into Act III on October 27, players can experience the new agent Skye. Hailing from Australia, Skye is a master of beasts. Kind of like a druid in futuristic military agent form, Skye can impair enemy vision, heal teammates, and sic her beast companions on opponents.

Blaston Is A Matrix-Inspired Neon Shootout VR Game With Big Ambitions

3 years 6 months ago

Blaston is a PvP fighting game that's entirely in VR with some impressive, creative minds behind the adventure. With Left 4 Dead's Mike Booth and Doom's Tom Hall on board with the folks over at Resolution Games, Blaston is an unapologetic experience that isn't afraid to simply be what it is: a straightforward PvP experience that is just meant to be fun.

We recently had a chance to go toe-to-virtual-toe with the team behind this game to square off and shoot out. Immediately upon putting on the VR headset, my mind went straight to Cyberpunk with the neon colors and futuristic tones. That being said, the game itself plays like an old western shootout, pitting one player against another in a Matrix-style race to be the last man standing.

The game is simple: players face off against another person in a neon-drenched close-quarters arena. When the countdown hits zero, both players must utilize an arsenal of weapons to take each other out. Resolution Games CEO Tommy Palm tells Game Informer that each weapon was designed with sports in mind, giving them a playful edge to keep Blaston appropriate for all ages without making it camp. While not campy, some of the weapons are downright cute, and each has a its own strength when taking to the realm of PvP.

Your Guide To Genshin Impact And Gacha

3 years 6 months ago

By now, you've probably heard of Genshin Impact. I spoke highly of the game in my review, but that didn't offer any tips for getting started. That's what this guide is for! Get ready to learn how miHoYo's game-as-a-service adventure works. For reference, all my Genshin Impact play has been on PC using a wired Xbox controller, but the game is available on PlayStation 4 and mobile devices.

What Is Genshin Impact?

Genshin Impact is a free-to-play adventure game where you control a party of four adventurers in a big open world. Mini-arenas, small dungeons, bosses, puzzles, hundreds of chests, secrets and more are scattered around the world. It is essentially a game-as-service adventure title with many JRPG, ARPG, and MMORPG mechanics and features, though it is important to note that it is not a MMORPG. As a game-as-service, only two of Genshin's seven (possibly eight) regions are in the game right now, and that means there is way more of this amazing world coming, in terms of story, characters, quests, areas to explore, and more. You can get a taste of what's coming in this trailer here. We can see that we're going to get a frozen region, an Egyptian-themed area (With an Anubis character? Yu-Gi-Oh baby!), and a lot more. For reference, we are currently on Act 1 ... of 8 in that trailer. Wow.

FIFA 21 Career Mode And Pro Club Saves Won't Transfer To Next-Gen Consoles

3 years 6 months ago

If you've purchased FIFA 21 on current-gen consoles and are planning to pump tons of hours into Career Mode, Pro Clubs, Online Seasons, and Co-Op Seasons, be forewarned: your saves won't transfer to the PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X/S.

In response to Eurogamer's questions about the reasons behind this decision, FIFA Executive Producer Aaron McHardy stated that the team chose to focus on cross-generation improvements rather than enabling transferable saves for all of the game modes: "We decided that the time required to make all modes transferable was better used to build new features and improvements across the entire game, along with addressing feedback from our players." McHardy would go on to explain that server-based modes like Volta and Ultimate Team will transfer over instead.

We thought FIFA 21 was entertaining for the most part, but the constant grind often made progression a slog. Check out our review here

New Mortal Kombat 11: Ultimate Kollector's Edition Features Sub-Zero Mask, But Only For Some

NetherRealm and Warner Bros. Studios has confirmed that a Mortal Kombat 11: Ultimate Edition is on the way and it will include the three new fighters revealed with Mileena, Rambo, and Rain. Also confirmed is a sweet new collector's (kollector's*) edition with a Sub-Zero mask that looks stunning. The bad news? It's only for the EU.

Warner Bros. tells Game Informer that the below Sub-Zero edition will only be available in the EU and will not be making its way over to the Americas. While sad, because it really does look incredible, it is nice to see Sub get some more love, especially with how incredible the vanilla game's collector's edition was.

For those in the EU, or for those that are planning to import, it comes with a 1:1 scale Sub-Zero Mask, a steelcase, exclusive Avalanche Sub-Zero DLC, and the Mortal Kombat 11: Ultimate game package as well. Ultimate comes with the following:

Doctor Strange Will Be In Spider-Man 3

3 years 6 months ago

Benedict Cumberbatch's Doctor Strange will be joining the cast of Spider-Man 3. A stand-in for Nick Fury and the late Tony Stark, Doctor Strange will serve in a father-figure/mentor role for Peter Parker as he takes on Jamie Foxx's Electro and any other unannounced super villains. Doctor Strange's appearance will continue to tie the Spider-Man movies to the extensive MCU. Additionally, Spider Man: Homecoming and Far From Home Director Jon Watts is returning to helm the third film with shooting slated to start in October.

Doctor Strange's involvement might mean that Spider-Man 3 will explore alternate universes, but that's just speculation. What do you think the third web-slinging film will be about?

A Live-Action Kingdom Come: Deliverance Adaptation Is In Development

3 years 6 months ago

It feels like every month we are learning about another video game getting the movie adaptation treatment and today, another one has been added to that lineup. A live-action Kingdom Come: Deliverance adaptation is confirmed to be in the works from Warhorse Studios.

According to Variety, former Netflix executive Erik Barmack is working alongside Warhorse Studios to adapt the Kingdom Come: Deliverance game. This game is set during the Medieval Holy Roman Empire and while it sold over 3 million units, the reception to the title itself was less than stellar. Over time, the title garnered more positive feedback after several major updates were pushed and while it is one of the more successful games set during this particular time period, it's not one many would expect to get a full movie adaptation.

This RPG was developed by Warhorse Studios and was published by Deep Silver for this gen. This open-world adventure does have a lot of side stories and a bases tale as well that could supplement an adaptation, but it looks like this project is still very early on in its development.

Minecraft Movie No Longer Has A Release Date

3 years 6 months ago

With COVID-19 still not contained in certain areas in the world, many aspects of daily life are still in a constant state of disruption. The movie business is just one of the many industries impacted by the pandemic, including the upcoming Minecraft movie. When announced, the Minecraft film was set for 2022. Unfortunately, that date has been rescinded and not replaced with a new projection for launch.

With so many game adaptations coming to film and TV, Minecraft is a smart pick. Since it launched back in 2011, this title has amassed incredible player counts and numerous expansions inspired by other franchises. Minecraft has more than solidified itself as an iconic entry into gaming history with various spin-off games and even books.

Steve

The Minecraft movie is under Warner Bros. with a trailer of directors leaving the project. First, Shawn Levy exited the role of director only to be replaced by Rob McElhenney, who also left. Back in 2018, Warner Bros. recruited Aaron and Adam Nee to come in with a new script, though eventually Allison Schroeder later came in with her own script with Pete Sollett signing on to direct.
