7 Photography Games To Get New Pokémon Snap Fans Back Behind The Lens

2 years 8 months ago

Two weeks ago, we got a free expansion for New Pokémon Snap. The update introduced a range of fresh content to get digital photographers back in the NEO-ONE, including three new areas to explore, a handful of previously unseen Pokémon to capture, and an experimental technique that shrinks both vehicle and photographer. Don’t worry about the side effects; the shots are great!

While the expansion gave fans plenty of fun Pokémon-filled photo-ops, many may find themselves running out of new subjects this week. But if you’re not ready to put down the virtual camera just yet, here are some video games that will put your honed photography skills to good use.

Young Souls May Be The Best Reason To Fire Up Stadia In Ages

2 years 8 months ago

Among the new releases this week, you’d be forgiven if you missed Young Souls. Here’s why you probably haven’t given it the time of day: the game is a timed Stadia exclusive. Don't close this tab! The game is coming to other platforms this fall. I can’t wait for that day to come because I’m several chapters into the game and having so much fun that I’m upset you can only play it on Stadia right now.

At its core, Young Souls is a two-player beat ‘em up in the vein of Streets of Rage or Scott Pilgrim vs. The World. It’s also got RPG-style progression and a dungeon-crawling structure. As two orphaned twins, Jen and Tristan, you’re living a mundane life with your adopted father, a kooky scientist, in a small town. What isn't boring is that your father figure has been abducted by "gobbons" (basically goblins) and taken to a fantastical underground world. Since Jen and Tristan are rebellious teens, they’re more than happy to pick up a sword and battle through floors of dungeons to rescue him.

Good News, Skyrim Is Re-Releasing For The Millionth Time With Skyrim Anniversary Edition

2 years 8 months ago

QuakeCon 2021 is going on now and the annual showcase kicked off with a pleasant Quake remaster announcement and a plethora of intriguing panels to listen in on. It also came with the confirmation that Skyrim is re-releasing again for the billionth time, just in case anyone forgot it existed.

For a quick timeline, Skyrim, the fifth entry in the beloved Elder Scrolls franchise, first launched back on November 11, 2011, and instantly became a massive hit. So much so that Bethesda re-released it. And then released it again. And then again. The studio even released it on Alexa, the AI robot of our dreams, as a joke response to all of the memes about how much love Skyrim gets. Fast forward to 2021. Where — you guessed it — Skyrim is coming back again, this time with next-gen upgrades for PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X. Oh, and fishing. Skyrim is finally getting fishing.

Because this is called the Anniversary Edition, the latest re-release will be dropping on November 11 later this year, ten years post-launch.

QuakeCon 2021 is officially a go, and the annual festivities kicked off today with the return of the original Quake experience, only now it's even better. Shortly after Quake Remastered leaked on the Microsoft and Nintendo storefronts, Bethesda confirmed that the enhanced version of the game is not only on the way — it's already here!

So what is the new enhanced Quake experience, and where is it available? The enhanced version of Quake is available starting today on PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X/S (through backwards compatibility), PlayStation 4, Xbox One, PC, and Nintendo Switch. For those playing on a PS5 or Series X, expect a 4K experience at 120 FPS "available soon" as a free upgrade. The update is completely free to upgrade to the remastered version for those who own the game on Steam.

As a whole, the new and improved Quake aims to remain authentic to the original version, just with updates across the board regarding audio and visuals. With resolutions up to 4K and widescreen support, the enhanced models, dynamic lighting, anti-aliasing, depth of field changes, and the original soundtrack from Nine Inch Nails' frontman Trent Reznor all compiles to be an epic adventure.

Dead Space 2 Is At Its Best When It Finally Shuts Up

2 years 8 months ago

Dead Space 2 is an annoying game. Not a bad game by any means, but one that tests my patience and exhausts me for hours on end. It's because of a backend technical issue, but I feel lucky that we currently have our comments turned off. I dread what some of you would say down there after that first sentence.

The problem with Dead Space 2 certainly isn't its gameplay. Dismembering Necromorphs, juggling the various weapons and powers, and tense fights with numerous enemies feel great. I love all that. The problem with Dead Space 2 is its horror. More specifically, the game never knows when to shut the hell up.

For most of its playtime, Dead Space 2 is never interested in scaring the player; it wants to terrorize them. And admittedly, in the game's opening sections, this is incredibly effective. Protagonist Issac Clarke awakes to find himself strapped in a mental hospital – ostensibly because of what he's seen and experienced in the first game. However, a man is there, helping set him free. A woman calls you, explaining he's there to help you. You don't know these people, but if the sounds of destruction outside your room are any indication, there's no real choice but to trust them.

Jump in with the Game Informer crew today to see the unexplored Iki island, Jin's dramatic backstory, and some pet-worthy wildlife. We might even get a glimpse of the expansion's new abilities, like the awesome-sounding horse charge. Our recent impressions piece calls the director's cut a "must-play for fans," but if you're still on the fence or just want to see some sweet Ghost of Tsushima action, join us for today's jaunt through feudal Japan!

Your guides for this wild island tour will be the stick-wielding Alex Stadnik, the invincible Dan Tack, and the fearsome Jill Grodt. The expansion's setting, the colorful Iki Island, is host to an entirely new story that features Jin attempting to confront another wave of Mongol forces. This includes the Eagle, a Mongol leader that could make even the mightiest warrior shake in their boots. Especially since the Eagle will be leading a new enemy type into battle: shamans. These warriors will keep our other enemies hyped for battle, and, even with a myriad of techniques mastered, they could prove quite the challenge. But it won't be all action.

Revealed today inside Call of Duty: Warzone, players were treated to a new look at the upcoming Call of Duty: Vanguard. This year on November 5, Call of Duty heads back to WWII as a backdrop for Call of Duty: Vanguard.

Moreover, Call of Duty: Vanguard explores WII with environments that have been traditionally explored, but also numerous other fronts and theatres.

Splitgate Open Beta Extended For The ‘Forseeable Future’

2 years 8 months ago

Splitgate, the free-to-play “Halo meets Portal” arena shooter, has enjoyed a rather successful open beta over the past few weeks. Hundreds of thousands of players have been having fun with portals, and the full launch was supposed to kick off in July. However, developer 1047 Games postponed the release to this month to bolster servers strained by the high player count. Now that we’re mostly through August, 1047 has provided an unexpected update. Instead of going 1.0 soon, Splitgate will remain in open beta indefinitely.

According to a press release from the studio, keeping the game in beta for the long(er) haul will allow it more time to continue improving the game's infrastructure to ensure it’s fully ready for primetime when that day comes.

“In looking at the issues facing the scalability of the game’s backend, the process includes far more than simply dealing with server capacity,” says 1047 CEO Ian Proulx. “We are focused on keeping the game stable for fans, and iterating on the game’s concurrent capacity in order to minimize player wait times. We want to do this the right way, and we want to be prepared for massive scale when we officially launch, all the while continuing to improve the beta with frequent updates, additional features, and improvements to server capacity.

Inspired By Madden, NHL 22 Introduces Superstar X-Factors To Change The Metagame

2 years 8 months ago

NHL 22 is ushering in a new console generation in style. This entry marks the first year the game launches on the PS5 and Xbox Series X/S, and it’s coming with a new look to celebrate, thanks to the series finally moving to EA’s Frostbite engine for both the new and previous-gen versions. Outside of visual upgrades, EA Vancouver looks like a team pinning all its hopes on its superstar talent to bring in the fans and victories, and it just might work.

Elevating The League's Best With X-Factors

EA Vancouver wants to better represent the players who are difference-makers and dangerous threats every time they step on the ice, like cover athlete Auston Matthews. Inspired by EA’s Madden series, this year introduces Superstar X-Factors for the elite players in the league. “Madden did a phenomenal job of telling stories of what makes a player special with their X-Factor feature set,” says NHL 22 producer Clement Kwong. “Not only does it enable great storytelling as we elevate the superstars, but [it] also introduces a new meta to gameplay that injects more strategy and competition for our core – something we haven’t really done to gameplay in recent years.”

Auston Matthews Of The Toronto Maple Leafs Is NHL 22's Cover Star

2 years 8 months ago

After making his cover debut on NHL 20, Auston Matthews is once getting the honor for NHL 22. Today, EA Vancouver revealed that the Toronto Maple Leafs forward is this year's cover athlete, and it's not unwarranted, thanks to the big year Matthews just had.

We usually don’t see a repeat cover this quickly, but Matthews is coming off an incredible season, scoring 66 points in 52 games and winning the Rocket Richard Trophy for being the top goal scorer in the league. The Leafs’ disappointing playoff run aside, Matthews is always fun to watch, as he’s one of the most creative and dynamic players in the game.

"Since gracing the cover in NHL 20, Matthews has firmly established himself as one of the top goal scorers and personalities in the league," says NHL 22 producer Clement Kwong. "As an NHL superstar, he's a new generation of player, pairing size with speed, strength with skill, and stache with style."

The Ghost of Tsushima Director’s Cut Is A Must-Play For Fans

2 years 8 months ago

Ghost of Tsushima was one of 2020’s best games. As one of the swan songs to the PS4’s exclusive library ahead of the new generation of hardware, Sucker Punch’s Japanese feudal epic ticked all the boxes – slick combat and stealth, breathtaking visuals, and a mature and thoughtful story about the nature of loss. It also featured one of the most memorable game endings in many years. After that, what more could be added that wouldn’t feel like a retread?

Quite a bit, as it turns out.

Ghost of Tsushima Director's Cut (PS5) | New Gameplay Today

2 years 8 months ago

Click to watch embedded media

While I don't need to regale you of the trials of 2020, last year was an absolute banger of a year for video games. Titles such as The Last of Us Part II, Hades, and Animal Crossing: New Horizons wowed us with emotional stories, frenetic moment-to-moment gameplay, and a much-needed sense of escapism from the world crumbling around us.

One of the year's main highlights was also a PlayStation exclusive and didn't feature Joel or Ellie. Ghost of Tsushima wowed us when it was first released last year and was a stark reminder that the development team over at Sucker Punch knows how to make great video games.

The studio hasn't rested on its laurels, though, as Ghost of Tsushima Director's Cut will launch later this week, and (we're not bragging, we promise) we've gotten to go hands-on with all the latest additions.

A Bee Almost Ruined The Beginning Of Skyrim

2 years 8 months ago

Let's be real; the beginning of Skyrim was iconicRiding in on the cart towards your execution and the "you're finally awake" line has essentially become the new Rick Roll when it comes to memes. Not only was the scene itself pretty awesome in its own right, but the fade to black effect only to end up in the Skyrim cart has become a steadfast joke to put into TikTok videos, trailers, and other gags that point towards the game with a thousand releases. Little did we all know that one tiny bee almost ruined it all.

Nate Purkeypile, a former developer who worked at Bethesda for Skyrim, dropped this little nugget of truth over social media talking about the various issues this one scene gave the team. Nowadays, bugs in Bethesda games are nothing new. In fact, even the studio pokes fun at itself for some of the more oddball glitches found in its engine, but in this case? It was an actual bug that caused things to go awry. Purkeypile opened up about the beginning sequence and how the smallest things can cause everything to go off the rails.

Predicting Every Elden Ring Boss

2 years 8 months ago

From Software titles feature some of the best bosses in gaming, putting the player against what seems impossible until they work out a solution. That can be upping stat points, calling in a friend (or making a new one!), or simply learning when to dodge, parry, or roll. If you’re like me, it often involves lots of rolling. From Souls to Bloodborne to Sekiro, we can look at what bosses Hidetaka Miyazaki and the team at From Software have come up with over the years to perfectly (and highly scientifically) predict exactly what bosses we’ll see in their upcoming open-world take on the Souls formula. I can’t wait for the wild ride next January. What can we expect to see? Warning: Potential spoilers from all From Software games ahead.

One Hidden Ultimate Dragon Boss

Early screens and footage indicate that the world of Elden Ring has multiple dragon opponents, possibly roaming the open world looking for a snack. However, From has a fairly interesting history with these giant winged monstrosities. Yes, we can almost certainly expect to see a dragon on a bridge somewhere, and it’s going to breathe fire on the bridge and burn unexpecting travelers. That’s a given. But historically, there’s also a good possibility that a bigger, tougher dragon that could be missed is hidden behind a “takedown and discovery.”

Cyberpunk 2077’s 1.3 Patch Address Myriad Of Issues And Adds Free Content

2 years 8 months ago

CD Projekt Red is still righting the ship that is Cyberpunk 2077, and its latest patch plugs up some more gameplay, performance, and stability leaks while also tossing in some free, albeit small, pieces of content. Patch 1.3, the follow-up to the substantial 1.2 update, is now live for all versions of the sandbox RPG and aims to make the wild ride across Night City a lot smoother.

Upon downloading the patch you’ll be treated to three new pieces of content. First up is an alternative appearance for Johnny Silverhand, which you access in the settings tab under “Additional Content.” You also get the Rare/Iconic quality multilayered syn-leather Deltajock and Luminescent Punk jackets. After completing the mission “The Ride” and receiving Viktor’s message, you can find these jackets in V’s apartment stash. Lastly, you gain access to the Archer Quartz "Bandit" vehicle, which you can either buy or earn as a reward depending on your choices after finishing up the "Ghost Town" job and getting a message from either Dakota or Rogue.

Rainbow Six Siege Adds New Resident Evil Skin Where Players Can Transform Into Leon Kennedy

2 years 8 months ago

Click to watch embedded media

Rainbow Six Siege is no stranger to bringing some interesting crossovers into the game with unique skins. My favorite to this day is probably the Pickle Rick mashup, but for fans of Capcom's Resident Evil series, the latest skin tribute might be right up your alley. Leon Kennedy, a prominent character in the horror franchise, is crashing the world of operators as a new skin for Lion mains, following in the footsteps of another mainstay character earlier this year.

Joining the Resident Evil fun with the latest crossover is Leon and his cosmetic pack comes with unique headgear, Leon's uniform, weapon skins, and more for the operator Lion. The face itself appears more Lion than Leon, but the uniform is spot-on. Lion also got a little bit of a makeover, getting more of a Leon-esque hairstyle to go along with his sweet new digs:

Goodbye Volcano High Pushed To 2022

2 years 8 months ago

Goodbye Volcano High was one of the most eye-catching console exclusives from the PlayStation 5’s reveal presentation. The coming-of-age story centers on high school teenagers dealing with the pressures of advancing to the next stage of their lives. They also happen to be strange, dinosaur-esque creatures. We still don’t know a ton about it, and that might remain the case for a bit longer because the intriguing narrative title has been delayed to 2022.

Developer KO-OP tweeted a message announcing the delay, explaining that pandemic-related challenges and the fact that the game’s story has been rebooted are the two primary factors for the change in release timing. The team also states that they want to avoid crunching to get Goodbye Volcano High out the door sooner. You can read the team’s message below.

El Shaddai Gets PC Launch Date And Bonus Goodies

2 years 8 months ago

Earlier this year, we found out that 2011 cult-favorite El Shaddai: Ascension of the Metatron is heading to PC. After a couple of false alarms regarding its release date, we know that the game comes to Steam on September 2.  A new trailer also revealed pricing as well as extra goodies such as additional story content and more.

If you missed El Shaddai during its launch, the beautiful and bizarre game is best described as a third-person action platformer with a wacky story inspired by the apocryphal Book of Enoch. You play as the book’s namesake, Enoch, and you’re searching for seven angels to prevent a catastrophic flood. The game was released for Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 but was never ported to PC (or anywhere else, for that matter). That’s been unfortunate because while it’s a weird game, it’s also quite good, which makes its move to Steam exciting for both fans and curious newcomers.

The Steam version will include a post-game digital novel called Lucifer’s Fall. Publisher Crim is also releasing a digital artbook with over 90 pages of illustrations and a 61-song soundtrack.

Does Fortnite's New Imposter Mode Take Among Us 'Inspiration' Too Far?

2 years 8 months ago

Epic Games revealed a new temporary mode for Fortnite, a whodunnit experience that is drawing a lot of attention for the wrong reasons. In many instances, the gaming community will liken an experience like this to Among Us due to the indie game's rocket into popularity over the past year. But does Fortnite's new mode, called Imposter, have one too many similarities to be a coincidence? It seems that way, and the folks behind Among Us feel the same.

Fortnite has been party to numerous crossovers in the past, usually as a collaborative experience between Epic Games and another company. However, InnerSloth was not included in the conversation about Fortnite's Imposter mode, which — by the way — is what the murderer in Among Us is called. When the new mode was announced, the Among Us comparisons immediately began, but it wasn't until I dove in deeper that I realized this was more than simple inspiration; it really is an unofficial crossover. The problem with it being unofficial is that InnerSloth, which is a small indie team, in no way benefits from the new Fortnite mode, whereas Epic Games has everything to gain. At least they did until the Among Us team started to speak out.

New Pokémon Brilliant Diamond And Shining Pearl Nintendo Switch Lite Console Revealed

2 years 8 months ago

During today’s Pokémon Presents showcase, we got a deep dive into the new and revamped features coming to Brilliant Diamond and Shining Pearl, including character customization and Pokémon hideaways. But that’s not all that long-time Diamond, and Pearl fans should be excited for. The chief operating officer of The Pokémon Company, Takato Utsunomiya, also announced and revealed the Dialga and Palkia Editions of the Switch Lite.

Embellished with artwork of the two legendary Pokémon, the special Switch Lite is reminiscent of the Nintendo DS Lite Onyx Dialga and Palkia Editions released in 2006. The Switch Lite copies release on Friday, November 5, just a couple of weeks before the Brilliant Diamond and Shining Pearl games launch worldwide. Now, you can travel the lava-infested canyons, sandy seaports, and teeming grasslands of Sinnoh in style. You can get a better idea of what the console will look like in the photo below.

Pokémon Brilliant Diamond and Shining Pearl are remakes of the original Diamond and Pearl games launched in the West in 2007. While a few new updates are bound to make the fourth-generation games feel more contemporary, that classic Pokémon feel will still be on display. John Carson put it best:

Pokémon Brilliant Diamond And Shining Pearl Trailer Shows Off New Gameplay Features

Today’s Pokémon Presents presentation put a big spotlight on Brilliant Diamond and Shining Pearl, the enhanced remakes of the fourth generation games coming to Switch. Whether you’re exploring the Sinnoh region for the first time or you know it like the back of your hand, a bevy of new features aims to make the adventure deeper than ever.

The Grand Underground is a unique area chock full of special activities. You can dig up fossils and create secret bases that you can decorate by placing various Pokémon statues. There are also Pokémon hideaways, new areas that feature Pokémon roaming freely, and the monsters you encounter change depending on which statues you place in your underground HQ. Some Pokémon can only be found in the hideaway, meaning you’ll want to visit it frequently if you plan on completing your Pokedex.

Pokémon Brilliant Diamond And Shining Pearl Will Offer Character Customization

2 years 8 months ago

The August 2021 Pokémon Presents showcase offered up trainers a new look at what Legends Arceus will have to offer, including a revamped combat system and some new forms! What was also revealed is the confirmation about a highly requested feature for the Brilliant Diamond and Shining Pearl games, as well. Both Pokémon Brilliant Diamond and Shining Pearl will bring trainers back to Sinnoh, where they will meet up with Professor Rowan to battle it out against Team Galactic. Pokémon Unite Coming to Mobile This September With Sylveon and Mamoswine Joining The Battle

2 years 8 months ago

Today’s Pokémon Presents kicked off with some updates on the pseudo-MOBA Pokémon Unite. Not only did we get a glimpse at a couple of new playable Pokémon, but a release date was announced for the iOS and Android versions, as well as some extras on all platforms.

Starting with the new characters, two new Pokémon will be joining the roster sometime soon. Shown off today were the Twin Tusk Pokémon Mamoswine and Fairy Eeveelution Sylveon. No dates were given for either character's release, and more disappointingly, we didn’t see hide nor hair of when Blastoise is set to hit the game.

Pokémon Unite is coming to mobile devices on September 22 for both iOS and Android. All three platforms will be able to play with one another through crossplay. Those who have collected the Unite License for Zeraora as a Switch launch bonus can carry the Pokémon over to the mobile games.

New Pokémon Legends Arceus Gameplay Revealed Showing New Growlithe Form And Revamped Combat

2 years 8 months ago

The August 2021 Pokémon Presents showcases showed a few new details about the open-world Pokémon Legends Arceus adventure, a storyline with a Feudal spin, and the freedom to explore. With RPG elements woven into the story, the next step of the Pokemon franchise aims to bring a little more adventure back into trainers' lives.

The latest look at gameplay for Pokémon Legends Arceus shows off the various pocket monsters we will encounter, including an adorable first look at the new Growlithe. The visuals are stunning, but the trailer explored the different styles of enemies, fully equipped with menacing red eyes and upped stats to make the challenge of the hunt even harder.

The battle system has also seen major changes, including the strong and agile styles for Rhydon and Crobat. Changes to the battle system have been a huge talking point in the Pokémon community for a long time now, so to see the many changes reflected in Pokémon Legends Arceus is a welcome surprise. Pair that with the element of stealth, and we've got an exciting new adventure ahead.

Time-Travel With The Help A Giant Magical Squid In Kraken Academy

2 years 8 months ago

We all know the first day of school can be anxiety-inducing. There are new subjects to learn, new classmates to avoid looking stupid in front of, and perhaps it’s an unfamiliar building entirely. What if you had to relive that first day again and again? Moreso, what if you had to do it to help a giant, magical squid save the world from peril? You may have enrolled in Kraken Academy, a, shall we say, quirky adventure game coming next month.
