Hideo Kojima's Post On P.T's Anniversary Kicks Up PS5 Game 'Abandoned' Rumors Once More

2 years 8 months ago

BlueBox Game Studios' mysterious PlayStation 5 title Abandoned continues to be at the epicenter of conspiracy theories. Many believe, and not without merit, that Abandoned is secretly a Hideo Kojima game while others are sure it's something related to Silent Hill. Though studio head Hasan Kahraman has plainly stated in the past that Abandoned is its own game, in no way related to Kojima, Konami, or Silent Hill, that hasn't been enough to assuage fan theories. Following an additional Konami link was previously discovered, kicking the proverbial hornet nest once more, surrounding a Konami-sponsored podcast, it's now a Hideo Kojima post itself making waves in this particular whirlpool.

Today is the anniversary of P.T., the now-canceled interactive teaser for Silent Hills. The cancelation of this project upset many in the gaming community, as well as those working on it. The hope has always been that some day it would make a comeback, and some are convinced that Kojima's latest tweet may be another piece of this very confusing puzzle.

Frostpunk 2 Is Coming And It Takes Place Decades After The Original

2 years 8 months ago

Frostpunk, the bleak yet well-received survival game, is getting a sequel. 11 Bit Studios has announced that Frostpunk 2 is on the way and task players with once again braving a frigid hellscape. The catch is that this time it’s set 30 years in the future.

The age of coal has ended and now oil has become the frozen society’s most sought-after resource. Not everyone is on board with this direction, and those who are have become embroiled in faction wars and other conflicts. Like the first game, Frostpunk 2 blends city-building, survival, and choice-driven gameplay by putting you in the shoes of the leader of a struggling city. You’ve got hungry mouths to feed and not enough warmth to go around so it’s your job to make tough decisions in the type of politics that will net the best results. Ruling with an iron fist may have resources pouring in but will your people resent you? Does a more benevolent approach paint a picture of political weakness in the eyes of rival settlements?

Talking 12 Minutes With Willem Dafoe For 12 Minutes

2 years 8 months ago

Even five years after its promising premiere at PAX East in 2015, we still can’t wait to get our hands on 12 Minutes. The premise behind this inventive indie game is simple, you are a man stuck in a 12-minute time loop, trying desperately to prevent the death of your pregnant wife. But, in the middle of dinner, a police officer arrives and accuses your wife of murdering his father. Your wife dies during the ensuing struggle and no matter how many times you relive the scenario, the situation always ends in tragedy. The concept is strong, but so is its all-star cast: James McAvoy, Daisy Ridley, and Willem Dafoe. We talked to Dafoe and 12 Minutes’ director Luis Antonio about how this little indie game got such an impressive cast and how the narrative evolved throughout development.

Shin Megami Tensei V Unveils New Bethel Trailer

2 years 8 months ago

As is often the case in Shin Megami Tensei titles, the fate of the world is at stake and caught in a tug-of-war between the forces of good and evil. And, if other games in the franchise are anything to go on, perhaps other factions and philosophies as well. Often, your choices during the game lead to various different ending states. Shin Megami Tensei V looks like it's probably going in this direction as well. We won't have too long to wait until we are making those big choices, as the game is set to land on the Switch on November 12. Today, a new trailer hit that you can check out below.

Click here to watch embedded media

While you can pretty much set your watch by Shin Megami Tensei games and their core formulas, we've already seen some shifts in direction for V. Still, today's trailer gives us a peek at some things that look like they're playing it close to the established franchise roots. A look at a classic unit from the series, the Archangel, is available in detail from a screen here and we see plenty of the staples in play. We've seen all those abilities before, so we know for sure that the famous "one-hit kill" abilities like Hama are going to be around to dish out some pain – be sure to get protection for your allies and yourself!

Destiny 2 Season Of The Splicer's Conclusion Is A Perfect Picture Of Duality, Pain, And New Beginnings

2 years 9 months ago

Destiny 2's Season of the Splicer has finally reached its end, and not only did it bring chills and tears, but it also brings hope for the franchise's future. The latest season did more than bring new game aspects into the shooter, such as the Expunge and Override events, transmog, and much-needed Stasis tweaks in PvP. It also continued what Season of the Chosen beautifully laid out: a story that transformed the online adventure's weaknesses into strengths and provided Guardians with a tale that has as many twists as it does heartbreaks.

Warning: Massive spoilers lay ahead for the Splicer epilogue, so I recommend not reading past this point if you have not played it yet.

Nier Reincarnation Is One Of The Best Console-Like Games On Mobile

2 years 9 months ago

Historically, most mobile games have been seen as casual experiences known for streamlined controls, inviting color palettes, story-lite loops, and dreaded thirty-second ads. Classic arcade and puzzle titles – remember Temple Run? How about Candy Crush Saga? – continue to flourish on the small(est) screens because they aren’t massive timesinks with rigorous learning curves. However, more involved genres like battle royale and RPGs have been topping the Android and iOS most-played charts in recent years. Lengthy narratives and skill-based gameplay loops have come in console/PC-ports like Genshin Impact and PUBG Mobile. Nier Reincarnation, however, employs a happy medium. Heartfelt plotlines with striking visuals, Keiichi Okabe’s mesmerizing score, unintrusive microtransactions, and simple, but rewarding, combat controls establish Reincarnation as one of the best console-like games on mobile devices.

2 years 9 months ago

If you read our earlier preview about Boyfriend Dungeon, then you know we found it just as entertaining as it is weird. But weird is sometimes good, and Boyfriend Dungeon does weird very well. For those itching to woo some fancy weapons that coincidentally happen to be hot love interests, now's your time to chase those dreams because it arrives on Nintendo Switch today.

This game is perfect for those who enjoy games like Dream Daddy, and it starts by allowing you to create your character. The character creation is bare-bones, but you can choose basic options like hair colors, pronouns, and general vibe. Once your character looks the way you want, it's time to get out there and fight some dunj in a world where even the simplest weapon can be more than it appears. What a crazy coincidence that they all also happen to be ridiculously hot.

Publisher Game Mill Entertainment has pulled the curtain back on Nerf: Legends, a new sci-fi first-person shooter based on the popular Nerf toy line. The game arrives sometime this October and offers a more PG spin on a traditionally mature genre.

IGN broke the news earlier this morning, and the reveal trailer (posted above) shows off the real-life Nerf weaponry you’ll be using to blast adversaries in the face. 15 different Nerf guns based on the company’s Mega, Ultra, and Elite lines are at players’ fingertips. However, the guns fire laser darts instead of the traditional foam darts, and you can collect power-ups such as seeker, freeze, and magnetic darts. Weapons can be customized with various offensive perks and you can outfit guns and your character with cosmetic skins.

Axiom Verge 2 Launches Later Today

2 years 9 months ago

Axiom Verge was a true sleeper hit when it launched back in 2015. Solo designer Tom Happ’s love letter to classic 2D Metroid games inundated its audience in a world brimming with creepy, sci-fi creatures while maintaining that nostalgic NES/SNES aesthetic. Axiom Verge 2 was first announced during a Nintendo Indies Showcase in 2019. So, it’s fitting that the anticipated Metroid-like would premiere once again. The sequel looks even more intense than the previous entry.

The journey to Axiom Verge 2’s eventual release hasn’t been without hardship: we posted a delay announcement earlier this year. And despite this unfortunate news, the game is still slated for a worldwide launch in just a few days. Joe Juba excitedly reported that the sequel looks to build upon the foundation that the first Axiom Verge established in nuanced ways, “Axiom Verge wasn’t a mere imitator; it built on a solid foundation with its own signature elements. A heady sci-fi story and mind-bending meta elements put a contemporary twist on the familiar formula – and with Axiom Verge 2, players are about to learn even more about this series’ unique identity.”

Animal Crossing: New Horizons Update Focuses On Fixing Bugs, Including Music Syncs And DIY Glitches

2 years 9 months ago

Animal Crossing: New Horizons update 1.11.1 is here and its main focus, unlike previous patches, is primarily on bug fixes known in the game. From cloud glitches to de-synced music, here is what players can expect to find when they log into their islands alongside the recent seasonal events added

Animal Crossing: New Horizons Update 1.11.1

According to the most recent patch notes from Nintendo's UK site, the latest update tackles a few known issues in the game. One bug, in particular, addresses a bug in the DIY Recipes app on the in-game Nook device that would place certain recipes out of order. A separate bug fix tackles certain color variations not showing up properly in the Photopia item catalog, whereas a separate issue relating to the seasonal clouds not showing up quite as intended has been patched.

The final update in the latest patch notes includes a fix that applies to the closing time music not playing properly in Nook's Cranny. Some users have reported that the music is missing entirely, where others cite that it simply sounds off. Whatever you may have experienced regarding this specific bug, it looks like it's now fixed and ready to belt out those tunes as intended.

Assassin's Creed Valhalla: The Siege Of Paris Impressions

2 years 9 months ago

Assassin’s Creed Valhalla’s newest expansion, The Siege of Paris, is available today for season pass owners and will officially launch tomorrow. The DLC finds Eivor in West Francia, ruled by Charles the Fat, making allies and enemies to protect the Raven Clan. For those of you looking to hop into your longboat and cross the sea to the land of the Franks, here are my first impressions of the main story and new content.

The Siege of Paris is a dark adventure, both visually and thematically, offering Valhalla fans more of what they love. The DLC doesn’t stray too far from the game’s established formula, though it does introduce a host of new things. You’ll find a mounted enemy type, side quests called Rebel Missions, various fresh abilities, gear, and a ridable bear. While most of this is enjoyable, nothing breaks the Valhalla mold, so the new features feel familiar while appearing different. One of the novel, puzzle-like aspects of this DLC, the rat swarm, proves to be a clunky addition to the game. It requires you attack to ward off the little biting creatures, but Eivor's wild swings are more suited to the battlefield than herding rats. However, the ranged ability called Plague of Rats is an effective – if a little unsavory – tool to quietly clear out groups of soldiers.

Another Activision Blizzard Shareholder Issues Demands For Change, Calls Out "Inadequate" Response

2 years 9 months ago

Last week during the most recent Activision Blizzard investor's call, several shareholders shared concerns over what was being done following the details of a lawsuit from the California Department of Fair Employment and Housing (DFEH) against the company over reported toxic workplace culture. The bulk of the suit focuses on  "violations of the state's civil rights and equal pay laws," specifically regarding the treatment of women and other marginalized groups. Citing a "frat boy" culture, another shareholder is stepping out with a list of demands for the company to implement positive change.

The shareholder in question is an investment group called SOC, and the company is calling out Activision Blizzard's response to the recent allegations. In a statement that Axios was given access to, SOC says that even recent promises from current CEO Bobby Kotick do not go "nearly far enough to address the deep and widespread issues with equity, inclusion, and human capital management."

Sonic The Hedgehog 2 Casts Idris Elba As Knuckles And The Internet's Reaction Is Everything

2 years 9 months ago

Idris Elba has an impressive acting record, playing all sorts of characters that his talent brings to life. While he's kicking butt as Bloodsport currently with The Suicide Squad now in theaters, it looks like he's pivoting in a completely different direction for his next project: Sonic the Hedgehog 2.

The sequel to the live-action take is expected to drop on April 8, 2022, and while we are still waiting to learn more about the upcoming film's premise, we do have one particular confirmation that basically lit the internet on fire in one fell sweep: Elba is playing Knuckles. The actor shared the confirmation of his new role via Twitter with our first look at the character's redesign and it took about 0.002 seconds before half of Twitter began having a sexuality crisis.

Xbox Game Pass Is Adding Even More Indie Adventures To Its Growing Library, Including Stardew Valley

2 years 9 months ago

ID@Xbox provided indie fans with an entire showcase dedicated to new gaming adventures that are on the way. The showcase gave us incredible first looks at new indie games, as well as new info on already revealed titles, but it also came bearing Xbox Game Pass news, as well.

While not every game announcement slated to arrive on Xbox Game Pass later this year received a release date, we do at least have an idea of what else is on the way. Games like Stardew Valley are widely beloved in the gaming community, and its arrival to the subscription service library is one that has been requested a lot in the past. Other titles on the way include:

  • Aragami 2
  • Pupperazzi
  • Library of Ruina
  • Evil Genius 2 World Domination
  • Stardew Valley

I'm particularly excited for Pupperazzi, mainly because it's basically Pokemon Snap but with puppers. I don't know about you, but that sounds like paradise to me. Aragami 2 is slated to arrive next month, though Evil Genius 2 is expected sometime in the latter half of this year. More titles will be revealed in the coming month, but for now? We have Pupperazzi.

In case you missed last week's announcement about what other titles are on the way, here is everything coming (and leaving) Xbox Game Pass this month:

Team Fortress 2 Mod Aims To Remake The Game Using Half Life: Alyx's Engine

2 years 9 months ago

Team Fortress 2, despite a release way back in 2007, remains a popular go-to online shooter that continues to impress with its concurrent player account. The game offers strategy, comedy, and just a good time, which is why this particular mod undertaking is one to note.

A group of modders are utilizing the same engine Valve used for Half-Life: Alyx to essentially remake Team Fortress 2. Team Fortress S2 is the name, and the project consists of a team of passionate gamers coming together to further inspire love in the TF2 community. "We love it for its gameplay, story, its unique cast of characters and environments," boasts this group of modders, and they are showing that love by making this experience even better.

"A few months ago, when s&box started to release access to the Source 2 tools and ways to create custom game modes, we started to ask ourselves: 'How would TF2 look like if it was ported to Source 2?' We know that Source 2 provides a lot of graphical improvements as well as a new physics engine," says the team when reflecting on how this project came to be. "It is a lot more up-to-date to modern game development standards, compared to the two-decades-old Source, yet similar in some ways. So seeing this game in a new modern engine really interests us."

Windjammers 2 Open Beta Kicks Off Tomorrow

2 years 9 months ago

Windjammers 2 has been coming along for a good while now, and although it still doesn’t have a release window, developer Dotemu suddenly announced it’s getting an open beta beginning tomorrow. The team also confirmed that the game is coming to PlayStation consoles after previously being listed for Switch, PC, and Stadia.

If you’re cocking your head sideways, wondering what the heck a Windjammers is, the original game hit arcades in 1994 and is essentially air hockey but with a frisbee-like disc. Two players face off in one-on-one bouts using colorful characters sporting individual strengths and weaknesses to try and lob the disc into the other’s goal. Its fast-paced action made it a cult favorite, and an enhanced port of the game came to PS4, Vita, and Switch. Meanwhile, the sequel was announced in 2018, so needless to say, it’s been quite a long time coming for today’s announcement. For an additional refresher on how the game works, a new trailer helps bring players up to speed.

GTA 5 On PS5 Will Run At 4K And 60 FPS

2 years 9 months ago

Rockstar Games already told Grand Theft Auto fans earlier this Summer about its next-gen upgrades planned for GTA V, but it looks like PlayStation Germany had just one more thing to add. According to a recent blog post from the German arm of PlayStation, GTA 5 on PS5 will run at a 4K and 60 FPS setting.

The expanded GTA 5 experience on PS5 aims to make buying this game for the 100th time just a little more reasonable, including making significant tweaks to the way it looks and plays. This includes a "smooth 60 FPS" experience, according to PlayStation Germany, as well as a "crisp 4K resolution." The automatic Google translate option on Chrome struggled with the translation just a little bit, making the enhancements almost hilariously sound like a threat: "You've never seen the criminal metropolis Los Santos so beautiful when the skyline shines thanks to a bold graphic update in crisp 4K, and you make the city extremely smooth and unsafe thanks to a smooth 60 FPS." Because everything in this world should be "smooth and unsafe," to be perfectly honest.

Turtle Rock Addresses Back 4 Blood Beta Racial Slur Heard In-Game

2 years 9 months ago

Back 4 Blood

The most recent Back 4 Blood beta period housed a lot of fun and wild zombie kills, but some beta players noticed something was off when running down hordes of zombies. A few videos have been shared on social media from Back 4 Blood players that sounds like the zombies are saying a racial slur. The original video began gaining traction, causing other players to note similar instances heard in-game.

With the N-word seemingly being said by the undead, the videos quickly went viral, causing WB Games and Turtle Rock to quickly make a statement regarding the find. In the tweets below, the first two videos that went viral can be seen. The community seems divided on what it is. Some are saying it just sounds like a zombie moan, while others swear that it's a slur. What you hear is for you to decide, but the studio has made a statement regarding whether or not a slur was intentional (via Kotaku):

The full statement reads as follows:

It's About Time Video Games Remembered That Dodgeball Is Super Rad

2 years 9 months ago

Dodgeball has to be the most entertaining yet totally underappreciated team sport. It challenges two teams to eliminate each other by throwing balls at each other’s faces/crotches (I guess you could aim for other body parts, too) until only one is left standing. That’s amazing! What other sport lets you pelt people with objects and get away with it? When you think about it, dodgeball is basically a real-life deathmatch mode but less bloody – most of the time.

I would also argue that dodgeball lends itself to moments of individual badassery more than any other team sport. Any fifth-grader will tell you they never felt like the main character until they caught two balls in a row or swept an entire squad singlehandedly. Even the dodgeball itself is the best ball in sports. That satisfying “bing” sound upon nailing a body part? Try replicating that with a dumb old football or golf ball. The impact is so quiet that all you hear are the pained groans of the recipient. Lame.

The reason is that the real-life MLB will host a special game between the Chicago White Sox and New York Yankees on a specially-constructed field adjacent to the actual Field of Dreams in Dyersville, Iowa this week (August 12 to be exact). The in-game stadium is based on this new field and the team worked closely with the venue’s architects to help bring it to life. You can read more about how the developer painstakingly recreated the playing field by reading their PlayStation Blog post
