Dying Light 2 teams up with The Walking Dead for a "thrilling" crossover event

9 months 4 weeks ago

Good news, Zombie fans – two of the genre's biggest IPs, Dying Light and The Walking Dead, are partnering up for a "thrilling" crossover event.

Right now the details are scarce, but Techland popped up on Twitter to inform fans that it was "joining forces" with Skybound's The Walking Dead for a new event in which you'll get to "survive, scavenge, and slay the undead like never before".

"We know a thing or two about fighting the undead," the official Twitter account for The Walking Dead responded, although neither account told us what the event will entail, nor when we can expect to play it – we've just been asked to "stay tuned for more info".

Final Fantasy 6 contains a scene of perfect desolation - and not every player gets to see it

9 months 4 weeks ago

Final Fantasy is one of the most famous video game franchises in history. The first game in the series was released so long ago (1987) that I wasn't even born at the time, and several entries that followed became classics of the role-playing genre. Final Fantasy 16, the latest installment is one of the biggest games of the year now in 2023 - this is a franchise that has shown an awe inspiring level of success and longevity.

One of the various classics in the series is Final Fantasy 6. When FF6 was released in Japan and North America on the Super Nintendo in 1994, Yoshinori Kitase (the game's director) wasn't quite in the position to travel abroad and get a sense for the game's reception outside of Japan. On international PR tours years later, however, he was surprised to find that many Westerners - in contrast to the Japanese fans - seemed to actually prefer FF6 to the much more famous Final Fantasy 7.

I realised this too, perhaps even around the same time as Kitase, when I was a teenager and browsing gaming forums in the early 2000s. I grew up adoring FF7 on the PlayStation (my first console), so the idea that the preceding game was just as good, if not better, was exciting. I wasn't able to play FF6, however, until it had an extremely delayed release in Europe in 2007, via the Game Boy Advance.

Diablo 4's most elusive rare item has finally dropped in the wild - here's what it does

The last of Diablo 4's super-rare elusive items have finally been discovered in the wild.

Last week, Diablo 4's lead class designer, Adam Jackson, jumped online to "clear up" the confusion around some of Diable 4's rarest unique items, and it's from Jackson that we learned the names of the six rarest ones: Andariel's Visage, Doombringer, Harlequin Crest, Melted Heart of Selig, Ring of Starless Skies, and The Grandfather.

Up until that point, some extraordinarily lucky players had discovered five of the six items, but the most elusive one, Melted Heart of Selig, was still the stuff of legend… until yesterday, it seems, when the item finally dropped for a Chinese necromancer.

Toby Fox says there's one area to go before Deltarune Chapter 3 "playable all the way through"

With the second instalment of Toby Fox's reportedly seven-part "nonviolent" RPG Deltarune steadily approaching its second anniversary, fans are understandably eager to hear when more will be on the way, and while Fox mightn't be ready to divulge that particularly bit of information yet, he has now offered a development update.

Deltarune - which charts the adventures of human teenager Kris and their lizard friend Suzie in the mystery Dark World - launched its first chapter toward the end of 2018 as a free download. A second instalment - also free - arrived in September 2021, followed by the news a third, fourth and fifth chapter will all launch simultaneously at a later date.

The big question for Deltarune fans, though, is when, and the answer, if Fox's latest progress report is anything to go by, still sounds very much like 'not any time soon'. Fox does reveal, however, the team is currently working on Chapter 3's last overworld area - and once that's done, "the chapter will finally be playable all the way through".

Ubisoft reportedly remaking pirate adventure Assassin's Creed: Black Flag

While it continues struggling to get one pirate adventure out the door - by which I mean its very long-in-the-works Skull and Bones - Ubisoft is reportedly prepping another: a remake of its rum-soaked high seas gem, Assassin's Creed: Black Flag.

News that Ubisoft has finally decided to give everyone what they more or less wanted in the first place comes via Kotaku, which claims, citing two sources familiar with the publisher's plans, that the remake is "still in its earliest stages".

Ubisoft Singapore - the same studio still trying to finish the embattled Skull and Bones - is "heavily involved" with the project, which isn't expected to complete "for at least a few years".

The Lord of the Rings: Gollum studio Daedalic reportedly lays off 25 employees, exiting game development

Daedalic Entertainment, the company behind this year's critically lambasted The Lord of the Rings: Gollum, is reportedly set to exit game development and has laid off around 25 employees as part of the move. Additionally, a second Lord of the Rings game in development at the studio is said to have been cancelled.

Daedalic's The Lord of the Rings: Gollum, which was announced in 2019 for release in 2021, finally arrived last month, following numerous setbacks and delays. Its reception was less-than-positive, however, with Eurogamer's Christian Donlan calling it a "well-intentioned mess" in his 1 out of 5 review. It was something of a surprise, then, when reports surfaced soon after that Daedalic was currently working on a second Lord of the Rings game.

According to German website Games Wirtschaft, however, that game - which has reportedly been in the works since mid-2022 - is no more, with development now cancelled as part of Daedalic's sudden decision to shift away from development and solely into publishing following Gollum's poor reception.

F1 23: a huge technical upgrade - but do the new RT features make a difference?

The release of Codemaster's F1 23 gives us the most complete version of the series to date, with an upgraded version of its in-house EGO Engine and the return of the fan-favourite Braking Point story mode. The game also includes more ray tracing features, as this year dynamic diffuse global illumination (DDGI) is added on PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X, Series S and PC. DDGI extends an already deep list of RT technologies from last year's game, which included reflections, ambient occlusion and shadows. Going into the game, I was curious to see how much of an upgrade DDGI enables, how close PS5 and Series X can come to the maxed-out PC version, and what settings make sense for PC players.

Let's get to the basics first. Both PS5 and Xbox Series X target a full 3840x2160 during gameplay, with matching shadows, textures and draw distances. Interestingly, the game's many RT features are only active during menu sequences, pre-race buildup and replays. Once the race begins, traditional rasterised techniques like screen space reflections (SSR) and ambient occlusion (SSAO) replace the RT reflections, RT shadows, RTAO, and DDGI. These less demanding techniques allow these consoles to hit the full 4K, while with RT enabled you'll see scaling from lower resolutions - the lowest I spotted was 3072x1728 during replays (80 percent of 4K). Alongside the resolution drop, these RT-enabled areas also tend to run at an obviously sub-60fps frame-rate, including a 30fps cap in the menus.

The Legend of Heroes: Trails Into Reverie - a heartfelt conclusion that signals new beginnings

Returning to Crossbell and Erebonia left me surprisingly sentimental. Only three years have passed since my introduction to Nihon Falcom's RPG series, but Trails Into Reverie still feels pleasantly nostalgic, retreading familiar ground with a new high-stakes plot that provides critical reflection. After an incredibly long journey, Reverie calls time on Class VII and the Special Support Section's arcs while moving towards a new beginning.

Set five months after Cold Steel IV, a renewed struggle for Crossbell's independence kicks off this latest conflict with wide-reaching consequences. Split across three routes, you jump between the Crossbell police department's Special Support Section led by Lloyd Bannings, Class VII from Thors Military Academy, and the mysterious 'C.' Over-the-top action complements a compelling story even though Crossbell's plight feels overly drawn out. Still, some surprising twists redeem this.

Where Reverie shines is through its characters, and each route brings fresh perspectives to their actions. Rean, the man publicly revered as a war hero by Erebonia, finds his role scrutinised after being used as a nationalist icon. The SSS, long idealized as "heroes" by the Crossbell public, suddenly face the reality that such expectations have placed upon them. C's route is hard to discuss without spoilers, but I enjoyed this redemptive tale. Two wars and imperial occupation have left some deep scars, leading to an intriguing re-examination of prior events.

Microsoft lawyer skips ahead to "Elder Scrolls 16" release, apparently coming in 2026

During the proceedings, Microsoft's lawyer took to the floor in a bid to clear up a bit of a misunderstanding surrounding Bethesda's Elder Scrolls series. However, in doing so, they perhaps made things a touch more confusing.

Game of the Week: First-person games are always a head trip

Hello! This week our Game of the Week is actually two games - apologies to any purists. This is partly because I simply cannot choose between Synapse, a VR shooter that Ian absolutely adored, and Sludge Life 2, the parkour and graffiti adventure that I have finished playing and am still thinking about.

But it's also partly because interesting things happen when you put these two games together. In terms of genre, they're very different, but in terms of preoccupations they both share quite a lot.

They're both games that really explore the first-person perspective. I know: this is a popular viewpoint for games, and has been for decades. But games like Synapse and Sludge Life 2 serve as reminders that it's still a very interesting viewpoint too. The fact that it's widely used hasn't really taken the strange magic away that much, and sometimes games come along that make that magic really visible.

Baldur's Gate 3 dev says Xbox version still coming but "compromises" may have to be made

Larian Studios has once again addressed the Xbox version of its upcoming RPG Baldur's Gate 3, confirming that while it's still in the work, the developer may ultimately be forced to make "compromises" in order to release on the platform.

Larian's struggles with Baldur's Gate 3 on Xbox first surfaced in February, when - amid fan fears the game was a PlayStation console exclusive - the studio confirmed it was working on an Xbox version but that it had "run into some technical issues - particularly with split-screen co-op."

In a statement provided to Digital Foundry shortly after, Larian explained its decision not to formally announced an Xbox release was more specifically down to issues it was having getting "split-screen co-op to work to the same standard on both Xbox Series X and S". And now, in an interview with IGN, studio founder and creative director Swen Vincke has shared more.

Master Detective Archives: RAIN CODE - A murder mystery in need of conviction

The Danganronpa franchise, spearheaded by creator Kazutaka Kodaka, has endured an afterlife far beyond its humble origins as a PSP murder investigation and school life simulator run by a maniacal two-tone bear. It shows what good writing and character design can get you. Characters like Junko Enoshima are perhaps more recognisable today for their place in TikTok cosplay circles and Tumblr discussions than for the games they came from.

The power of online fandom is intertwined with Danganronpa’s legacy, where even minor characters are beloved and memorable because of how clearly-defined their personalities and motives are from visuals alone. As a result, a dedicated fan base latched onto the game’s unique psycho-philosophical clash of hope and despair. Even now he’s left the series behind to found Too Kyo games with his good friend, and fellow cult creator, Kotaro Uchikoshi, experiences like Death Come True and World’s End Club, while of mixed quality, retain Kodaka signature violent rumination on justice.

Still, as those are smaller experiences, it’s hard not to view Master Detective Archives: Rain Code as the return of Kodaka, his first major release since the end of the Danganronpa trilogy in 2017. Rather than throwing a bunch of unhinged schoolkids into a tightly-controlled environment where their only means of escape is the successful murder of their friends, we're in for a fantasy-mystery adventure. This is a game that blends Ace Attorney’s investigative intrigue with Persona-esque Mystery Labyrinths, all channeled through the stylistic filter of the creator’s iconic hit franchise.

Original The Settlers creator's Pioneers of Pagonia gets first in-game trailer

When we were first introduced to Pioneers of Pagonia, a new city builder from original The Settlers designer Volker Wertich, earlier this year, there wasn't much to go on beyond a brief description and a teaser video. Now, though, with its early access release steadily drawing nearer, we've been given a first proper look at the thing via a new in-game trailer.

Pioneers of Pagonia, to get the fundamentals out the way, sets players loose on the titular (and procedurally generated) islands of Pagonia with the goal of establishing a presence through production, economic expansion, and exploration, making use of the resources they uncover - and the alliances they forge with Pagonia's not always friendly inhabitants - along the way.

40 different building types have also been promised for Pioneers of Pagonia's Steam early access launch, along with more than 70 different goods and dispersed production chains. A co-op mode is also planned, meaning you'll be able to be a ruinous blight on the land (or otherwise, I suppose) with a friend in tow.

RoboCop: Rogue City is having a closed playtest next week

As we clomp stompily toward RoboCop: Rogue City's September release, like some, oh, I don't know, machine-augmented crime fighter, developer Teyon and publisher Nacon have announced a closed playtest is happening next week.

RoboCop: Rogue City - which is build around an "original story" set between RoboCop 2 and 3 - looks to land somewhere between a first-person shooter and cybernetically enhanced detective adventure, whisking players to the rain-slicked streets of Old Detroit to solve crimes, slay baddies, and perhaps even turn a few wrong 'uns into goo.

"Explore open areas and complete your objectives according to your own sense of justice," explains Teyon. "Finding evidence, interrogation and maintaining public order are just some of your daily tasks as a police officer. But don't take decisions lightly: your choices can determine the fate of citizens and the result of your mission."

This week's biggest headlines from the FTC vs Microsoft trial

Nvidia GeForce RTX 4060 vs RTX 3060 review: higher frame-rates, less VRAM

Regularly topping the Steam hardware survey as the most popular graphics cards, Nvidia's 60-class products are often the 'go to' product for the mainstream gamer, with the green team usually dominating, even when rival products can be just as good or even better. With 60-class, the power of the GeForce brand comes into its own and to be fair, Nvidia has delivered some excellent GPUs. The GTX 1060 is still supremely popular, while last-gen's RTX 3060 is currently the cheapest GPU you can buy with 12GB of VRAM - an increasingly important spec point. You can think of the RTX 4060 as broadly on par with the old RTX 2070 Super - a $499 product back in 2019 - so it's generally faster than the 3060, but it does ship with just 8GB of RAM.

That's clearly a challenge for the new card, even though its suggested retail price is actually lower than its predecessor, the issue being that discounting means RTX 3060 can be a lot cheaper - and capable of superior price vs performance ratios in some scenarios while stocks last. The fact is that VRAM is becoming increasingly more important and Nvidia cutting it by a third gen-on-gen is problematic. That's a shame because the inherent advantages of the Ada Lovelace architecture are all present and correct on the RTX 4060 and, in the case of DLSS 3 in particular, we're seeing gaming feats on this £289/$299 product that nothing else can get close to.

Synapse - a pure power fantasy that epitomises everything great about virtual reality

It starts with a squeeze of the trigger and a flick of my left wrist. Where once stood an enemy, gun raised and pointed in my direction, there's now an empty space. Looking up I follow the body as it arcs through the air, and there I catch it with my telekinesis powers and slam it into the ground below where it smashes into digital shards on jagged, monochromatic rocks.

Spotting a group of enemies hiding behind cover I reach out with my telekinetic powers and use them to lift an explosive barrel into position above their heads. Then, with a simple clench of my fist, the barrel explodes sending rocks and bodies flying in all directions.

Later, while holding an SMG in my right hand, I use my psychic powers to snatch a flying Sentinel enemy out of the air and pin it to the floor before peppering its body with bullets until it explodes and melts away.

Here's how Pikmin 4's time rewind feature works

Pikmin 4's time rewind feature is a big addition to the series, though I admit being apprehensive at first around how it might be deployed. After a week with the game - and you can read some of my early thoughts here - I've come to use it sparingly, but appreciate its existence.

As its name suggests, the feature allows you to skip backwards and undo any sudden calamity. Though in doing so, my initial fear was it risked devaluing the Pikmin series' usual high stakes.

After all, the frequent likelihood of imminent Pikmin death - their agonising squeals, the sad sight of their soul floating slowly upwards - acts to ensure you approach each situation with care.
