Where's the cheapest place to buy Cyberpunk 2077?

3 years 4 months ago

Cyberpunk 2077 is finally here. After an eight-year wait and multiple delays, CD Projekt Red's massive sci-fi RPG has launched on PS4, Xbox One and PC - with PS5 and Xbox Series X/S upgrades due to arrive next year. Chris has tentatively recommended it in our Cyberpunk 2077 review, so if you're looking to pick up the game right now, here are the cheapest prices for Cyberpunk 2077.

Remember, if you buy the game on either PS4 or Xbox One you'll also get a free upgrade to the respective PS5 or Xbox Series X/S version when they are released in 2021. If you own either of the newly-released consoles, you can play these last-gen versions with a few boosts to performance thanks to the backwards compatibility feature.

A quick heads up if you are going to be playing on the base PS4 or Xbox One: the game does not run particularly well on either of those consoles. So far, players are experiencing poor performance, lacklustre visuals and an assortment of bugs. You can expect some improvement if playing on the PS4 Pro or Xbox One X, but it's clear last-gen hardware is going to struggle with Cyberpunk 2077. You can read the in-depth Digital Foundry analysis here.

Skyrim and Fallout 4 can be modded to run at 60fps on Xbox Series X

3 years 4 months ago

Word emerged last week that with a simple mod, owners of the Xbox Series X console were able to revisit The Elder Scrolls 5: Skyrim, and to play it at full 4K resolution at 60 frames per second. The evidence looked compelling and I wanted to try it out - and once confirmed, I had a whole bunch of further questions I wanted answers to. Would the mod work on Xbox Series S? What about PlayStation 5? And as Fallout 4 also supports mods on consoles, I had to wonder whether there was any way to run the game at 60fps there, ahead of Microsoft's official patch set to do the same thing?

The news of a working Skyrim 60fps mod first emerged on Reddit, courtesy of user annathetravelbanana, and looking into it, the story behind the mod doing what it does on Series X is intriguing. The original mod - known as Uncap FPS by Smudgey5000 - seems to be very old, and was actually designed for the original Xbox One. The way it works is to enable a higher frame-rate by disabling v-sync and removing the hard-set 30fps cap. On last-gen hardware, its effects and its overall usefulness are limited. On the intro cart ride, Xbox One X's locked 30fps becomes 33-43fps with a lot of judder and tearing. I imagine it's used in combination with other mods designed to improve frame-rate to push overall output higher. Regardless, on its own, it's not particularly impressive.

PS5 now warns you you're about to play the PS4 version of a cross-gen game

3 years 4 months ago

The PlayStation 5 now warns you that you're about to play the PlayStation 4 version of a game.

The warning, seemingly spotted first by Twitter user @Tidux, pops up when you attempt to play a PS4 game and a PS5 version is also available. The message provides the option to play the PS4 version or switch to the PS5 version.

This is a useful addition. In November, Eurogamer reported on how some PS5 users may have played the PS4 version of Call of Duty: Black Ops Cold War by mistake.

Afterparty is the best representation of what missing self-esteem can do to your life

3 years 4 months ago

Despite enjoying it during my initial review, I never connected to Afterparty in the same way as its predecessor Oxenfree, one of my favourite games. Both are narrative-focused - you walk two characters from A to B and pick dialogue options, some of these options will change the course the story takes. Your protagonists are young people with a very natural way of speaking - they mumble and interrupt each other should you so choose, sigh loud and use "like", like... you know.

I think I never liked Afterparty as much as Oxenfree because it's a less hopeful continuation of the same problems - Oxenfree ends at a point where Alex can choose to go to college in a different state and start over, whereas Milo and Lola spend college just as miserable as before. They aren't nice to each other. They may in fact be very tired of each other and ready to explore something new, but they're also scared of letting go.

Both games try to make a point about autonomy, about their protagonists never really being their own people, not only because they're literally being controlled by you. Alex is trying to move on from a traumatic experience in her life and needs physical distance for that, and Lola wants to move town after college, which frightens Milo enough to sabotage even a tentative attempt to do so. Alex in Oxenfree by contrast is much more of a video game hero protagonist, as she has the power to alter reality and undo the source of her trauma. What actually happened on Edward's Island, what happened to her brother before that, will be a thing only she remembers. I liked that option better, because what I want when thinking about traumatic experiences is a do-over. As Cher puts it: "If I could turn back time".

Save up to 89% on this massive 'Female Protagonist' Humble Bundle Sale

3 years 4 months ago

Humble have gone live with their annual 'Female Protagonist' sale, and this year the line-up is particularly good, and particularly cheap.

As well as the usual suspects (all those gritty Tomb Raider reboots), they've got the 2019 mind-bending action thriller Control, the brand new Resident Evil 3 remake, plus a whole host of Indie darlings like Gris and River City Girls. They've even included digital sleeper hit Prey for only £4. That's an entire 80% off. Not too shabby at all.

As usual, the games are available only on PC, and a portion of all the proceeds will go to charity. The deal is live until the 28th - so, six days and counting. It's well worth checking out for yourself, but in case you just hate scrolling, here's a few of our recommendations:

Call of Duty: Warzone and Black Ops Cold War datamine reveals first set of Mastercraft weapons

3 years 4 months ago

Call of Duty: Warzone and Black Ops Cold War dataminers have revealed the first set of Mastercraft weapons.

Mastercrafts, which return from Treyarch's Black Ops 4, are over-the-top weapon skins that transform a gun into something more. They're entirely cosmetic, so don't offer a gameplay advantage, but they sure do stand out.

Activision had teased their arrival earlier in December, but only now do we see what these guns actually look like.

PlayStation Store January Sale: All the deals you won't want to miss

3 years 4 months ago

While PS5s remain harder to track down than a needle in a needlestack, PlayStation fans can at least take solace in a proper good bargain. The Playstation January Sale began today and will run all the way until January 22nd, with a planned stock refresh on the 8th. The only exception is Call of Duty: Black Ops Cold War, which is 25% off, but only until January 5th.

Fans hoping to see Demon's Souls go on sale will be disappointed - the FromSoft remake is still sitting pretty at full price. But there are plenty other deals to choose from, including some big names from the past year. Here's a quick overview of the best discounts we spotted:

“This is an opportunity to be the scariest game on the next generation of hardware”

3 years 4 months ago

It was probably the stand-out reveal of this month's Game Awards show; a first look at the kind of survival sci-fi horror so many of us have been pining for, from the same people that brought us video game's defining sci-fi horror Dead Space. The Callisto Protocol, due in 2022 for PlayStation 5, Xbox Series S/X and PC, is the debut of Striking Distance Studios, formed by Glen Schofield and other veterans of EA Redwood Shores/Visceral Games - a project, fascinatingly, tied into the PlayerUnknown's Battlegrounds universe, seeing as it also comes courtesy of the PUBG Corporation.

"Well, I'm not sure how much I can even say about it," Schofield tells us in the aftermath of the reveal. "But you know, there is a lore, and there is a big storyline that's being written now. I've been wanting to do another sci-fi horror game. I mean, you know, I love doing sci fi and I love doing horror. I wanted to go back to exactly what I wanted to do. So I presented an idea to them - then we try and retrofit this storyline that they've been working on."

The story's set in a distant future on Callisto, Jupiter's second largest moon, and equal in size to a planet like Mercury - "It's a good size moon!" says Glen - and is confirmed to be third person and single player. Beyond that? There's not much more information on offer, partly through a desire from Striking Distance to keep its cards close to its chest, and partly because as a project it's still early days. What we can glean, though, is the direction Glen and his team - some 25 of which hail back to the Dead Space days - will be taking The Callisto Protocol, and indeed the survival horror genre.

Gearbox reaches agreement with Bobby Prince for use of Duke Nukem music

3 years 4 months ago

Gearbox and Bobby Prince have come to an agreement over the use of Duke Nukem music.

In 2019, Robert "Bobby" Prince filed a lawsuit against Gearbox, alleging he owned the copyright on some of the music in 2016's Duke Nukem 3D: 20th Anniversary World Tour, itself a remaster of the 1996 original.

Prince believed the use of his music in the earlier Duke games was subject to a licence agreement between Prince and 3D Realms. Thus, Gearbox did not own the rights to certain music it thought it owned the rights to.

Call of Duty: Modern Warfare deserves a next-gen update and a full-blown second year

3 years 4 months ago

I wasn't so keen on Call of Duty: Modern Warfare's multiplayer at launch. Most of the maps available to play at the back end of October 2019 were too big for their own good, resulting in boring play. Some of the maps were downright dirty. Piccadilly remains a blot on the Call of Duty multiplayer landscape, and I still have nightmares over sniper rifle glints peeking out from the safety of Euphrates Bridge. Add to this cluttered map design, a largely useless mini-map and upper-level windows all over the shop, and you got a camper's paradise right there.

A year later, I am craving more Modern Warfare, and I feel bitterly disappointed that the game feels like it's being left behind as Activision shifts focus to Warzone and Black Ops Cold War.

It's interesting to look back at Modern Warfare's first year of life. As new maps were added to the game, I found myself playing it more and more. I had a blast with the chaotic Shipment. I love the flow of Rust. And Shoot House is one of the best FPS maps around. Modern Warfare's close quarters maps are brilliant, and it remains my favourite 6v6 game installed on my console hard-drive. Yep, I think Modern Warfare is a better 6v6 game right now than Black Ops Cold War.

World of Warcraft: Shadowlands review - don't call it a comeback

3 years 4 months ago

It wouldn't be right to suggest that World of Warcraft had ever, at any point during the last 16 years, been a less than popular and successful game. The days when it was thought the biggest game in the world are long behind it, but it has been reliably raking in subscription revenue and expansion pack sales on a considerable scale the whole time. It's also a fool's errand to mark any one expansion out as a return to form; many WOW players will argue that each expansion is either a disgraceful betrayal or a triumphant comeback, but different sections of the community seldom agree on which is which. (Meanwhile, long-term but less invested casual players like myself tend to think they're all pretty good.)

Yet something feels different this time. Shadowlands, WOW's eighth expansion - or perhaps we should more properly call it the ninth edition of the game - was briefly the fastest-selling PC game of all time this month, before Cyberpunk 2077 came out. Activision Blizzard CEO Bobby Kotick has been talking up this venerable franchise too, boasting of record player engagement before the expansion released and noting that it brings in over a billion dollars a year, making it the financial equal of stablemate Call of Duty.

The Cayo Perico Heist is a testament to GTA Online's lukewarm immortality

3 years 4 months ago

GTA Online is like a Xenomorph, in a lot of ways. It's an iconic behemoth, one that creates a parasitic relationship with its hosts and refuses to die. It also thrives unexpectedly during quarantine.

Grand Theft Auto 5 celebrated its seventh birthday during this noxious year, but Los Santos has never been busier. The game sold 400,000 copies in under four months in the UK, in the midst of our first national lockdown. That success might have had something to do with the *ahem* player-driven alien gang war that consumed the game (and most of social media) in April.

But if you need a stone-cold example of GTA Online's enduring relevance, Sony led with the damn thing during its PlayStation 5 reveal conference. In 2021, Rockstar's service sandbox will land on the monolithic mini-fridge and its router rival, the first of its kind to span three generations of consoles.

Xbox Countdown Sale cuts prices on AC Valhalla, Watch Dogs Legion and more

As January inches ever closer, Microsoft have launched their 'Countdown' sale - appropriately titled, as I think we're all counting down the days until 2020 is finally finished. The sale runs until January 3rd (right about the time the hangover should wear off) and covers several hundred games, including some of this year's biggest titles.

If you're looking to test out a new Series X or Series S console, there's plenty of options, including 40% off Immortals Fenyx Rising - not bad for a game that's hardly two weeks old. You can also get Assassin's Creed Valhalla for 30% off. The entire East Anglian coastline, yours for little more than £40. Who could say no to that?

Here's a quick overview of the best deals on offer right now:

AMD Radeon RX 6900 XT review: is it really worth a thousand dollars?

3 years 4 months ago

Not just Big Navi, but the biggest Navi of them all. AMD's Radeon RX 6900 XT completes the trio of next-gen graphics card launches from Team Red and on the face of it, it does seem like... the least interesting of them all? In all areas of the specification - bar one - RX 6900 XT is identical to the RX 6800 XT, a graphics card that costs a full $350 less than the new GPU's colossal $999 price-point. In essence, the only palpable difference between 6800 XT and 6900 XT is that the top-end offering gets the full complement of 80 compute units vs the slightly cut-back 72 in the cheaper product. But perhaps there's more to the spec than meets the eye and in combination with the fact that this is the absolute top-end, maybe that's enough to convince the most die-hard of AMD fanatics that this is the card for them.

Of course, the concept of a halo product commanding a colossal price premium is nothing new. Whether it's CPUs, GPUs, motherboards, storage or memory, it seems that at the top-end, there's a long history of a bit of extra frequency, a few more shaders or some extra RAM allowing manufacturers to ramp up prices in ways that are divorced from the concept of 'value' in every way. Intel had its Extreme Editions, Nvidia built a whole Titan brand around the concept, and while it offers much more memory, more compute and an out-there cooling set-up, the RTX 3090's price-point is far more audacious than AMD's.

Currys are still running discounts on their Switch Lite bundles

3 years 4 months ago

It's been a stressful year, hasn't it? Frazzled and burnt out, you might find yourself - oh, let's say four days away from Christmas - and still with no gift for your favorite child / sibling / spouse. If that's the case, and if you've got a couple hundred quid to spare, Currys may well come to your aid.

Right now you can get a Nintendo Switch Lite and a copy of Super Mario 3D All-Stars for £220, £17 off the regular price. A similar bundle with Animal Crossing: New Horizons is £15 off. Bump up the spending a little more, and you can get Minecraft and Animal Crossing along with a Switch Lite for £240. There's even a choice of snazzy colours, including blue and pink. Sorry, turquoise and coral.

With another company these deals might seem unimpressive, but by Nintendo standards they're downright philanthropic. The discounts are a holdover from Black Friday, when Currys led the way with a number of decent Switch and Switch Lite bundles. It's surprising to see so many still in stock, as at the time of writing they remain some of the best Nintendo deals on the market. If you're looking to snatch up a last minute gift these are all available for in-store pick up. Just don't forget your mask!

Spider-Man Remastered may be coming to the PS Store as a standalone release

3 years 4 months ago

A page advertising the standalone version of Marvel's Spider-Man Remastered has popped up on the official PlayStation website.

At the time of writing, the only way to obtain the remastered version of the PS4 game is to buy Spider-Man: Miles Morales Ultimate Edition. But now it has its own listing on the PlayStation website, fans are now speculating that it might be teasing an imminent standalone release, particularly as there's no mention in the page's small print that you can only play it if you buy Sony exclusive, Miles Morales Ultimate Edition.

Of course, it's possible this is merely a mistake and right now, and it doesn't seem as though players can purchase the Remastered version without Miles Morales. We've reached out to Sony for confirmation either way - watch this space.

While only a tech demo and lacking both music, sound effects, and any obvious gameplay, it looks amazing for a demo made two decades ago. The brief video sees you, as the titular bug, explore a cel-shaded rendition of The Simpsons' kitchen and lounge, avoiding Homer's feet as you go.

GOG advises Cyberpunk 2077 players to "keep a lower amount of items" to avoid corrupting save files

In a response posted on the GOG website, CDPR has confirmed that once corrupted, there's no way to recover the save, so it recommends you keep "a lower amount of items and crafting materials".

How videogames explore our ancient, troubled love affair with fire

3 years 4 months ago

Why do human beings love fire? Why do we find it hard to look away from even the smallest candleflame? Many anthropologists put it down to simple inheritance: the hominids who became our ancestors were those most susceptible to fire's charms, for all its peril. Fire gave us cooking and tool-making; it freed us from the tyranny of the sun, allowing people to gather and work after dark; the ability to control it conferred status and thus, a foundation for more elaborate social structures. It was both an everyday tool and a terrible supernatural force to worship and wield against enemies. Small wonder that, thousands of years later, we seek its likeness in artworks of all kinds, from the hellish radiance of Francisco Goya's El Incendio to the smouldering poltergeists of The Sims.

Artworks like these may explore and even celebrate fire, but they also illuminate our distance from it. As Professor Daniel Fessler of the University of California argues, fascination with flame today isn't a universal human hallmark, but specific to post-industrial, "developed" regions where actual, open fire is seldom encountered. Fessler notes that children in areas where fire is an ordinary sight are drawn to it at first, but lose interest around the age of seven. Those of us who grow up in more "civilised" places never learn to live with flame, and are thus never able to overcome this infant fixation. For us, fire remains exotic, alien, a thing we fantasise about even as we are encouraged to think of it as a viral invader.

Assassin's Creed Valhalla gets festive with a Yule event

3 years 4 months ago

Ah, what could be more festive than getting very drunk and starting a brawl?

Valhalla's Yule Festival is now live, and brings with it some festive changes to your Viking settlement from 17th December to 7th January. You can expect lots of snow in Ravensthorpe, along with revellers and a variety of Yuletide activities to keep you entertained, including drunken brawls, archery challenges "and more". Taking part in these activities earns you Yule Tokens which can be redeemed for a range of goodies in the Festival Shop. You can take a peek at the list here.

It's worth noting, however, that this event only unlocks once you've completed one of the story arcs (such as Grantebridgescire or Ledecestrescire), and the rewards can only be redeemed during up until 7th January. The items range from 15 to 150 tokens in price, with the sum total of all the items reaching 775. Players have found that the maximum you can earn in a challenge is 70 tokens by doing a full round of brawling, so if you want everything, you could be there a while.

It's got a great cast.

Can you tell I am playing for time? I'm sorry. I would normally have padded this section out with a screenshot of iPlayer on Xbox Series S, but the system wouldn't let me take one!

Among Us is coming to Xbox next year

3 years 5 months ago

Hot on the heels of the news that Among Us is now on Nintendo Switch, another console has joined the murder party, as the game has now been announced for Xbox - and will be available on Game Pass when it launches. Oh, and if you have Xbox Game Pass for PC, you can grab Among Us for free right about... now.
