Swordship review - this game is a marvel

1 year 5 months ago

Do you like fonts? If you like fonts, you must play Swordship. (After Pentiment.) Swordship gets fonts. It loves fonts. And it's not just the fonts themselves, but what the game does with them. Finish a level and "LINE CLEAR" is laid out on the ocean. Finish sorting your earnings and "SHIPPED" is splashed across the screen. This is a game where the fonts make things beautiful. It's even a pleasure to die, because "GAME OVER" is arranged so artfully.

Beyond the fonts, Swordship is still rather excellent. This is pure arcade brilliance, actually, a fast-paced avoid-'em-up with a maritime larceny twist. Your Swordship is a dinky yellow mischief-maker, a needle-thin arrowhead of a craft that can open its tiny jaws to grab containers lost to the ocean, and then pinch them. It can't shoot, not really anyway, but it can trick nearby enemies into killing each other. Collect containers, get the enemies to kill each other, all within the narrow confines of a single top-down screen, which is given a bit of zip by the fact that everything on the screen is actually racing over the surface of endless waves. That's Swordship's whole deal. But as with the fonts, it's not the rules of the game so much as what the game does with the rules.

Okay, so collecting containers. You're racing along, moving left and right and up and down and a container is approaching. You know this because a bright yellow line appears on the screen - a shipping lane. Get into that and collect the container! Zing! I don't think there is actually a greater feeling in any game I've played this year. Pure connection. So now, you have a container in your mouth. You can use it as a bomb to wipe the screen of enemies, or you can bank it, which means waiting until a drop-off point appears on screen and hovering there for a few seconds.

Need for Speed Unbound tech review - profound improvements, bold artistic touches

1 year 5 months ago

After spending most of the last decade as a Battlefront and Battlefield support studio, Criterion Games is back with a full-fledged arcade racing adventure. Need for Speed Unbound is a boldly stylised open-world racer, with graffiti-inspired particle effects and cel-shaded character models. Criterion Games' last full titles were the much-loved Hot Pursuit and Most Wanted, so is Unbound a worthy sequel - and are the new visual effects an impressive addition or unwelcome distraction? Plus, how does the game hold up on PS5, Series X and Series?

Let's get the basics out of the way first - resolution and performance. Series X and PS5 both target 4K while Series S opts for 1440p, but dynamic resolution scaling (DRS) attempts to keep a locked 60fps by dropping internal resolution in heavier moments. I counted as low as 1800p on PS5 and 2016p on Series X, but in general play PS5 is around 1944p and Series X is at full 4K (2160p). Meanwhile, Series S can be as low as 1080p, averaging 1296p, so you get a noticeably softer image than the 4K-like results on the premium consoles.

In terms of performance, the situation reverses. PS5 is more-or-less locked to 60fps, but Series X and Series S see one-off frame-rates drops fairly commonly and more occasional drops to 51-57fps during intense races. Given the higher average resolution on Series X, it's possible that the DRS could be tweaked to ease GPU load and iron out these heavier drops - and if there are other underlying issues they ought to be solved. Right now though, PS5 offers the best overall experience for NFS Unbound.

Need for Speed: Unbound released last week, but has sadly struggled to make much of an impact.

In the UK weekly boxed game chart, the new Need for Speed only managed to chart in 17th place - that's behind last year's Just Dance 2022 and the Lego Harry Potter Collection.

UK sales data seen by GamesIndustry.biz reveals the game's physical sales were down 64 percent on the series' previous entry, 2019's Need for Speed: Heat.

FTC reportedly softens stance on blocking Microsoft Activision Blizzard merger

1 year 5 months ago

The US Federal Trade Commission reportedly looks to be leaning towards an approval of Microsoft's $68.7bn Activision Blizzard takeover.

Previously, the FTC's involvement in the deal had signalled a headache for Microsoft, which is facing regulatory approval around the world, and close scrutiny here in the UK. A lawsuit looked imminent - potentially blocking the acquisition, or carving out major concessions.

However, a fresh report by the New York Post into the FTC panel set to decide the deal's fate suggests the trade body is now looking more likely to let it pass.

Grinding gears

1 year 5 months ago

Game of the Week goes out to all of our supporters as part of the Eurogamer Essentials newsletter. There's going to be a slight shake-up of the supporters program in the near future (don't worry - it's all good news) so stay tuned for more details, and thanks as ever for your support - it's much appreciated.

It’s been, I’m sure you’ve noticed, a big week for big new games. The Callisto Protocol (which I’ve just spelt correctly for the first time without having to correct myself, which feels like some small progress) is delivering its spin on Dead Space before we get the remake proper next year, while Marvel’s Midnight Suns sounds truly sublime, but - and this won’t come as a surprise, I’m sure - it’s another game that’s caught my attention this week.

We’ve yet to post our Need for Speed: Unbound review; EA didn’t supply any pre-release code (or any post-release, for that matter) so I’ve been making the most of the 10-hour trial on EA Play. Indeed, I’ve just squeaked beyond those 10 hours and the fact I didn’t mind paying up for the full product suggests I’m having some sort of fun, but dear lord is this thing slow to get going.

How GTA3's predecessor fell out of favour with Nintendo

1 year 5 months ago

While the Nintendo 64 has its legion of fans today, there's no doubt that the all-conquering PlayStation decimated it in terms of sales, with most accounts putting the final figure at a ratio of three to one in favour of the Sony console. Much of this was down to the perception of the respective machines: the PlayStation was cool, appealing to an older demographic with a higher disposable income. The Nintendo 64, with its plastic cartridges and Mario games, despite Nintendo's best efforts, wasn't.

Maybe that perception would have changed if Nintendo hadn't decided to part ways with DMA Design, the studio that would go on to become the all-conquering Rockstar North. But Body Harvest, the game that emerged from the curtailed relationship remains a cult favourite, and the tale behind its development contains many twists and turns.

DMA began life in the late 80s, formed by Scottish entrepreneur and programmer David Jones, and initially developed games for chiefly the 16-bit computers such as the Commodore Amiga. Joining it a year later was artist Stacey Jamieson. "One day, my mum saw an advert in the newspaper and said, 'you love art, and you love games - why don't you apply for this?' So I did."

Then followed an extended 30-minute event mode where players were tasked with reforging the Island anew, using a mix of familiar and fresh locales that look set to appear in Chapter 4.

Nintendo addresses controversial Smash World Tour fan competition closure in lengthy statement

1 year 5 months ago

Nintendo has shared a lengthy statement in response to recent claims it told organisers of the unofficial Smash World Tour that the popular fan competition, including this month's concluding Smash World Tour Championships, could "no longer operate".

The Smash World Tour, an "international tournament circuit in which competitors for both Ultimate and Melee can qualify for the Smash World Tour Championships", is described by organisers as the "the largest esports tour in history, for any game title". This year's event, which ran between March and November, incorporated 6,400 live events around the world, attracting 325,000 in-person entrants.

With the tour now concluded, this year's Smash World Tour Championships was due to beheld between 9th-11th December, but organisers announced on Tuesday (as reported by Kotaku) they had "received notice the night before Thanksgiving from Nintendo that we could no longer operate". As such, December's Championships and the entirety of next year's Smash World Tour have been cancelled.

The Callisto Protocol looks great on PlayStation 5, at least

1 year 5 months ago

What began as an endeavour to expand the world of PUBG: Battlegrounds has instead morphed into an original narrative-driven horror experience known as The Callisto Protocol. Crafted by Striking Distance Studios, home to veteran Dead Space developers, the game leads the charge back into the depths of sci-fi horror. With promises of intricately detailed visuals and authentic character rendering, The Callisto Protocol stands to deliver one of the most visually striking Unreal Engine games to date. We'll examine what makes it special, including its reliance on ray tracing and its 60fps performance mode, focusing on the PlayStation 5 version of the game.

Based on our testing, PS5 is most obviously the lead platform for development - it's been solid throughout the review period, while we've had a bunch of problems with Xbox Series and especially the PC versions of the game (the latter of which is essentially unplayable right now). We'll be talking about the various issues on other systems in a separate article, but to see Striking Distance's vision best realised, it's PS5 that's the best place to play for now.

The Callisto Project was created with one of the final iterations of Unreal Engine 4 and with access to a full motion capture studio - and this game makes full use of both in its stand-out character rendering, with a cast rich with Hollywood talent. Performance and motion capture help bring these characters to life, but what separates Callisto is the fidelity with which these characters are presented in-engine.

The Callisto Protocol: Xbox Series versions have issues - and PC is almost unplayable

1 year 5 months ago

We already covered the PS5 version of The Callisto Protocol in our tech review, but some major issues in the PC and Xbox versions of the game's pre-release code meant that we want to cover these platforms separately.

Let's start with PC, where DF crew member Alex Battaglia has been testing the game for the past few days. Sadly, there's no good news here - the game is a disastrous state as of launch. First up, this is yet another Unreal Engine 4 title that doesn't precompile its shaders, meaning that the first appearance of new models and effects is accompanied by a hefty stutter that can bring even a high-end Core i9 12900K and RTX 4090 rig to its knees - with even longer hitches on weaker systems. What'a happening here is that shader code is compiled as it's needed, resulting in continual freeze-frame hitching every time you encounter a new effect that requires a new shader.

Shader compilation stutter is a massive problem with this game, ruining the sense of immersive dread the game is trying to create, and is only solved by playing through the whole game so that your second playthrough is stutter free - where's your Shader Butler when you need them? This issue could be solved by having the game precompile shaders on first boot, and even though this would delay the action and require redoing each time the game or GPU drivers are updated, it would at least ensure a smooth experience once in-game.

Nintendo just doesn't seem as bothered about its mobile games anymore

1 year 5 months ago

Nintendo once had bold plans to quickly branch out into a raft of mobile game releases - but no more. When it launched its first app, Miitomo, back in 2016, Nintendo's then-boss Tatsumi Kimishima said four more smartphone games would debut in the following 12 months.

In reality, Nintendo took several years to hit that milestone, and in the years since has shuttered several of them. Just one new Nintendo mobile game has launched in the last two years: Pikmin Bloom, developed by Pokémon Go maker Niantic.

This week, as Dragalia Lost joined Dr. Mario World and Miitomo on Nintendo's shutdown game scrap pile, the publisher offered a brief update on the continued importance it places on its smartphone efforts.

The Callisto Protocol review - a Dead Space-alike built on simpler pleasures

1 year 5 months ago

Let's get it out of the way right off the bat, shall we? The answer is: yes. Yes, The Callisto Protocol is Dead Space in fancy threads.

Yes, The Callisto Protocol - just like Dead Space - takes place in deepest, darkest space hundreds of years from now. Yes, The Callisto Protocol - just like Dead Space - features horrifying zombies that don't shuffle and moan as much as they screech and barrel towards you. Yes, The Callisto Protocol - just like Dead Space - explores not just the horror of an infectious disease that reanimates the dead, but that of humanity's cold, blind ambition, too. In some respects, it does these things better than Dead Space; in others, not so much. Either way, I had a bloody good time.

Should we be surprised the games share so much DNA given they've been created (or co-created, in Dead Space's case) by the same man? Probably not. Having replayed Dead Space quite recently, Isaac Clark's ordeal burns bright in my mind, so - consciously and unconsciously - I compared the two pretty much all the way through. With similarities almost too numerous to count - Jacob's Core health bar, the inventory menu, the dismemberment system, the signature stomp, there's even a gondola scene! - I suspect it'll be hard for anyone who's played Dead Space not to make those comparisons. Kirkhope's impressive credits include Banjo-Kazooie, Donkey Kong 64, Viva Piñata, and more recently, Ubisoft's Mario + Rabbids, and Bayliss has designed characters for the likes of Battletoads, Killer Instinct, Diddy Kong Racing, and Yooka-Laylee. He was famously also behind Donkey Kong's redesign.
