Pay $32 for a brand-new full-size HyperX mechanical keyboard

6 months 1 week ago

Mechanical gaming keyboards used to be premium options available to very few, but now they often go on sale for extremely low prices - even from big names. Today HyperX joins that list of big-name bargains with their Alloy Origins full-size mechanical keyboard dropping to just $32 when bought from GameStop in the US, versus its original price of $109.99. That's a great bargain for a keyboard with red (soft linear) mechanical switches, optional RGB lighting and a high-quality metal chassis.

Co-op voxel survival 'em up Enshrouded will release in January

6 months 1 week ago

The open world co-op survival game I liked most was Wurm Online, in which every action was performed via a right-click menu and we needed a town meeting to discuss who would spend the hours necessary to flatten a small patch of land.

I therefore look at co-op survival game Enshrouded, with its voxel building, grapple hooks, wingsuits, and think: pah, what tomfoolery. This looks fun. Not at all my sort of thing. It might be yours, though. It's now got a January 24th release date and a new trailer, below.

Nintendo developing live-action The Legend of Zelda movie

6 months 1 week ago

Still doubtless beaming from the runaway success of this year's Super Mario Bros. movie, Shigeru Miyamoto has confirmed a live-action The Legend of Zelda movie is in the works.

Details are sparse at present, but Miyamoto, announcing the news on Nintendo Japan's Twitter/X account, said the project has already been in development for "many years now". As per an accompanying press release, Miyamoto will produce the movie - which is being co-financed by Nintendo and Sony Pictures Entertainment (Sony will also handle worldwide theatrical distribution) - with Avi Arad, responsible for "many hit films", also producing.

Arad's films, if you're wondering, are primarily (but not exclusively) within the superhero genre, ranging from this year's acclaimed Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse and its celebrated 2018 predecessor, to 2022's Tom-Holland-starring Uncharted adaptation, as well as the likes of Venom, Morbius, the live-action Ghost in the Shell, and next year's Borderlands movie.

Ibrahim Nobunaga's Ambition Awakening

Koei Tecmo announced that Ibrahim, a Nijisanji VTuber, will appear in Nobunaga’s Ambition: Awakening as free DLC. Players have until November 20, 2023 to download him.

In Nobunaga’s Ambition: Awakening, Ibrahim will be “Ib Rahim,” who is an officer living in the Sengoku Era of Japan. Not only is he playable, but he’ll also be a star in a new event. This event focuses on the Honnoji Incident. Ibrahim (or Ib Rahim) will look different from his usual avatar. There is a partial mask over his right eye, and he has much longer hair, complete with a more Chinese-inspired outfit.

This is not the first time that Koei Tecmo has collaborated with Anycolor to put a Nijisanji VTuber in one of its games. In 2021, Kuzuha, Sister Claire, and Debidebi Debiru appeared as playable units in Romance of the Three Kingdoms XIV. This was also a free download.

BioWare release new Mass Effect 5 "Epsilon" trailer while hinting about Mass Effect 3 connections

6 months 1 week ago

Years of anticipation finally became reality last night when a videogame company posted a video of somebody in a sharp trench coat and mirror visor walking down a dim hall, swivelling dramatically to eyeball the viewer, then casually drawing a pistol and walking into a roomful of unfocussed Potential. This is Mass Effect 5, actual title possibly Mass Effect: Epsilon - "epsilon" being the Top Secret Codename of this hidden page on the Mass Effect website. What does it all mean? I don't know. It's a nice coat, though, isn't it? I like those padded red lapels.

This month's Humble Choice contains Unpacking

We crowned Unpacking our game of the year in 2021 for its human storytelling and satisfying puzzles of tidying things up. In her Unpacking review, Malindy Hetfield called the game a "calm and tactile little sim" which also allows players "personal expression and finding fun in what's literally just stuff".

Oh and you can find our entire Five of the Best archive elsewhere on the site.

Doors. I love a good door. I stop to take photos of doors while I'm walking around the real world. To me they suggest adventure, because who knows what might be behind one? Were I reading a story, that door might lead to another world. Have any of you read Stephen King's The Dark Tower series? Yeah, that. Doors are motifs for adventure that have been used over and over again.

Mudkip Joins Build-a-Bear Pokemon Plush Collection

6 months 1 week ago

Mudkip

A Pokemon Mudkip plush bundle is available to order from Build-a-Bear. This set costs $72, and it’s only available online.

The bundle will come with the Mudkip plush, a raincoat set, and a sleeper. Though Build-a-Bear offers the option to turn your toy into a scented one, the Mudkip is not eligible for that. The plush will also come with a sound chip which can play five different sounds. If you click on the video on the webpage for it, you can hear what it sounds like. Mudkip sounds like it does in the anime rather than in the game. You can put the sleeper (which looks like a onesie) or the raincoat on Mudkip, or you can simply leave it as is.

The Pokemon franchise has always been popular with the toy market due to the many species in the series. Build-a-Bear has released several Pokemon plushes in the past. Examples include Teddiursa, Sprigatito, Growlithe, Leafeon, and Umbreon.

What's better: auto-level up, or auto-detect graphics settings?

Last time, you narrowly decided that soulslike bloodstains are better than ghosts walking through walls. That sounds to me like the decisions of cowards who not only don't want to be got by ghosts, they want to be warned about the presence of any danger. This week, I ask you to choose between two automatic assists. What's better: auto-level up, or auto-detect graphics settings?

Bright and breezy horror hotel thingy Roman Sands RE:Build gets an intoxicating demo

6 months 1 week ago

Paratopic was a muddy, blood-filled VHS cassette of a game, a game of midnight highways, pinched, pixellated faces and acidic service station lighting. The next game from developer Arbitrary Metric, Roman Sands RE:Build, is... very different, at least on the surface.

The first Act of the new Steam demo sees you staggering onto the beach below some kind of tropical resort. You wander up past the pools to the cavernous lobby and are immediately set upon by haggard guests, who appear to think you're a member of staff. So you become a member of staff, fetching margaritas, tracking down the check-in ledger and running downstairs to adjust the boiler settings. You earn XP from quests towards employee ranks that unlock useful items at vending machines. And you try to work out what you're doing here, and why everybody's so terrified of the sun. I haven't deciphered the mystery yet.

Persona 5 Tactica PC Steam Version Goes on Sale Early

In what seemed to be a leak, Persona 5 Tactica ended up already available to purchase and play on Steam for the PC briefly on November 8, 2023. Its release date is November 17, 2023. [Thanks, Wario64 and Faz!]

The game was supposed to appear on Steam on either November 16, 2023 or November 17, 2023, depending on your region. However, the page updated and the game was temporarily live and able to be purchased. Both the $59.99 standard and $79.99 digital deluxe versions were already available. As Wario64 and SteamDB noted shortly after, Atlus and Valve caught and fixed the issue.

This also was apparently a playable version. Those who purchased Persona 5 Tactica on Steam following the update showed it can already be played on a PC immediately. As noted by Faz on social media, the person was already in the main menu and starting the game.

Full-fat Resident Evil Village on iPhone is a captivating tech demo - but hard to recommend actually playing

6 months 1 week ago

Apple's made some big moves to support Mac gaming over the past year, with ports of Resident Evil Village and No Man's Sky, plus the Game Porting Toolkit translation layer that allows Macs to run PC games. Finally those moves are beginning to pay dividends for Apple's much more popular iOS and iPad OS devices as well, with the port of RE Village for iPhone 15 Pro and M1 and M2-based iPad models.

This port promises the full-fat game experience, somehow delivered on a device that can fit in the palm of your hand. Today we'll be evaluating Village on the brand new iPhone 15 Pro, to see just how well this beautiful console and PC showcase translates to a pocketable gadget. Is this a genuinely good experience, or do the mobile concessions simply cut too deep?

I'd be remiss if I didn't emphasise how amazing Resident Evil Village looks on the iPhone right off the top. This is an extremely accomplished visual effort that is very similar to the existing console releases of the game, and the graphics are astonishing. Village is, bar none, the best-looking mobile title I've ever seen. The incredible quality of the PBR materials and environmental density really stands out on a six-inch screen, with no obvious cuts or modifications from the game's appearance on more power-hungry systems.

Our favourite Grand Theft Auto pieces we've published over the years

6 months 1 week ago

It's happening. After some chonky leaks and release dates hints, we now know Grand Theft Auto 6 will be officially unveiled in December.

Even though it's an announcement of an announcement, it's still a seismic moment in the world of video games, because that's the level of influence GTA has, and I've no doubt it will be a talking point for many weeks, months, and years to come. GTA 5 managed to straddle three generations of console hardware, after all.

Few gaming series are as famous, or as rich with material, which is why we've written so much about Grand Theft Auto over the years. We've looked at it from every angle we can think of, from the scorching Hot Coffee scandal to interviews with the people who created the very first GTA, to people who role-play as cops in GTA Online.

Reality Bytes: The 7th Guest VR is a sumptuously spooky remake

6 months 1 week ago

Hallowe’en may be over (just), but for this month’s Reality Frights, I’ve got a wonderfully seasonal game for you. It’s the brand-new remake of the grand old mystery puzzler The 7th Guest, a game which Bill Gates notably referred to as “The new standard of interactive entertainment.” In fairness to ol’ William, he said this seven months before Doom blew out the new standard’s insides with a 12-gauge shotgun, shunting PC gamers’ tastes away from kitsch adventure games and toward grisly murder-fests. But The 7th Guest is nonetheless fondly remembered for its spooky atmosphere, alongside its blend of pre-rendered backgrounds and live action cutscenes you could call ‘pioneering’ had it not proved such an evolutionary dead end.

Today, the original 7th Guest looks more dated than Henry VIII, which is probably why this remake replaces everything but the very skeleton of the 1993 original. The game still takes place in a creepy mansion belonging to a murderous toymaker, and still involves six eccentric guests to the house searching for a missing boy named Tad. But it’s otherwise been completely rebuilt, with whole new puzzles and whole new mechanics, all designed to be experienced in first-person VR.
