Atomic Heart Review - A Red Rapture

Atomic Heart

Platform: PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X/S, PlayStation 4, Xbox One, PC
Publisher: Focus Entertainment
Developer: Mundfish
Release:
Rating: Mature

After more than half a decade in development, Atomic Heart has arrived as the first title from developer Mundfish. This BioShock-inspired shooter is an impressive debut in many ways, and it wears its influences on its sleeve – for better and worse. The game’s dazzling world design, extraordinary production values, and fast-paced fights make for a solid campaign, but the derivative plot and often painful writing insist on dragging it down.

Atomic Heart’s premise is one of its most intriguing elements. The game takes place in an alternate-history Soviet Union that has become the world’s foremost superpower after World War II, thanks to the scientific innovations of Facility 3826. The player assumes the role of Agent P-3, an operative under the command of Soviet genius Dr. Dmitry Sechenov. When Sechenov’s latest social experiment goes wrong, P-3 is ordered to fight through the Facility’s rampaging robots and murderous mutants to reach the truth.

Microsoft Signs 10-Year Deal To Bring Call Of Duty To Nintendo

1 year 2 months ago

Call of Duty Modern Warfare 2 II Microsoft Nintendo deal 10 years

Microsoft has signed a binding 10-year legal agreement with Nintendo to bring Call of Duty to Nintendo players, presuming the company's colossal $69 billion acquisition of Activision Blizzard is approved.

Since the acquisition announcement last year, Microsoft has been attempting to prove to government agencies like the U.S.' Federal Trade Commission that this acquisition does not fall into any monopolistic activity and would not harm competitors like PlayStation. However, Microsoft has had a bit of a rough go at it. To counter, though, the company has been proactive in attempting to get the greenlight from the FTC, going as far as promising PlayStation that Call of Duty games will continue to come to Sony's consoles and agreeing to bring Call of Duty to Nintendo hardware

Metroid Prime has long been considered one of the crowning achievements of Nintendo’s GameCube library. However, the subsequent two decades have worn on the original release, but much like Samus by the end of each game, Metroid Prime Remastered brings the title back to full power.

Lies Of P Becomes A Real Game In August

1 year 2 months ago

lies of p

The release of the Pinocchio-inspired Soulslike Lies of P has been narrowed down to this August. A new story trailer introduces a seemingly villainous character, Simon, while highlighting some of the dangerous monstrosities waiting to dismantle players.

Lies of P unfolds in the fictional, Belle Époque-era French city of Krat as players control Pinocchio, a mechanoid puppet on a quest to become human. A certain Mr. Geppetto might be able to help with that, but Krat has been overtaken by sinister creatures Pinocchio must cut down using his multi-purpose mechanical arm.

The gameplay takes heavy cues from From Software’s work – Bloodborne in particular – as players take down enemies with deliberate sword attacks, while various mechanical arms grant abilities like firing lightning bolts or a grappling hook to reel in targets. Outside of battles, sidequests present the option of lying to characters, and the truthfulness of your answers alters the direction of these stories.

Lies of P will be available on PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X/S (including Game Pass), and PC. You can learn more by reading our hands-on preview from last year’s Gamescom.

Akka Arrh is a reimagined version of a prototype Atari arcade machine from the ‘80s. Originally scrapped due to a lack of interest, the trailer for the re-release claims that only three cabinets have ever been seen. 40 years later, when Atari reached out to veteran designer Jeff Minter (Tempest 2000, Polybius) to remake one of its games, he chose Akka Arrh. The result is a reimagining of the original concept, fused with Minter’s signature psychedelic visuals and some modern-day improvements. While the game can be fun, its cluttered visual design heavily detracts from the experience.

Crymachina Heading to Switch, PS4, PS5, and PC in 2023

In February, 2023, FuRyu teased a what seemed to be a new RPG. A teaser site noted that on March 1, 2023, all would be revealed. Now, NIS America and FuRyu came together to officially reveal the Switch, PS4, PS5, and PC action-RPG Crymachina. It will appear in Japan on July 6, 2023, then show up worldwide in Fall 2023.

The stars of Crymachina aren’t human. However, they are hoping to become so. Each of the three E.V.E are based upon people who did exist centuries before. People will follow them through a place known as Eden to discover if it might be possible for humans to return to the world. However, they’ll face opponents as they do so, leading to fights against various opponents.

The companies also revealed the two artists whose designs are behind the characters in the game. One is Rolua, who worked on the characters. The artist’s work also appeared in the light novel Boushokuki no Ken and in Star Ocean Anamnesis. The other is Yoshi., who is also working on the Kodansha game Izon.

NIS America also released a few gifs showing off some of the characters that will appear in the game. However, it didn't provide any names for the individuals.

Genshin Impact March 2023 Calendar Features Qiqi

March 2023 is about to begin, which means a new Genshin Impact calendar. Each month, HoYoVerse releases an image on the Japanese Twitter account. This March, the main character is Qiqi.

Qiqi is a five-star Cryo character that is always available in the gacha pool in Genshin Impact. People might happen upon her most often as a pity-breaker, as there is a 50/50 chance of getting one of the general pool five-stars or the focus five-star on any limited-time character banner.

Here is the full Genshin Impact March 2023 calendar image.

  • March 6th: Yaoyao
  • March 10th: Shenhe
  • March 14th: Jean

Here’s How the Bleach Renji SH Figuarts Figure Looks

Earlier in February 2023, Bandai Namco announced a new piece of Bleach Thousand Year Blood War merchandise. It confirmed Renji Abarai would join the Bleach SH Figuarts figure line. At the time, it didn’t even offer a silhouette as a teaser and only noted an August 2023 release window. Now the character’s been completely revealed.

Here’s a closer look at how this Renji Bleach figure turned out. He will come with his Zanpakuto Zabimaru. It is in its Shikai state for two of the poses. However, it also looks like he can also be posed with it in its sealed katana state. (It is unknown if there will be a full sealed form for him to “wield.”) There will be five face plates with different expressions with the figure. From left to right in the example, they let him display stoic, smiling, stunned, shocked, and angry emotions.

Final Fantasy XVI Main Story’s Length Will Be Around 35 Hours

1 year 1 month ago

Final Fantasy XVI Length

Japanese outlet Famitsu recently talked with Final Fantasy XVI Producer Naoki Yoshida, Director Hiroshi Takai, and Combat Director Ryota Suzuki about how long it would take to beat the length of the game and the content included. The main story will take roughly 35 hours to complete. The overall total will be about double that amount when all side content is included. The main Final Fantasy XVI story will include 11 hours of cutscenes. [Thanks, Famitsu!]

Director Takai declared in the interview that completing the main story of Final Fantasy XVI will take players around 35 hours to beat. Meanwhile, Yoshida added that finishing it with a hundred percent completion and seeing all cutscenes might take between 70 to 80 hours. While the length of the main story was initially expected to last around 20 hours, this number increased during development.

With the inclusion of side content, the average length it might take a player to complete Final Fantasy XVI eventually grew longer. The developers also said that FFXVI will include 11 hours of cutscenes. That number doesn’t include custscenes included in side quests and other events unrelated to the main story, so the total number of custcene time will be higher than that.

In addition, Yoshida talked about the strict schedule the development team has been working under, saying that the team has been “working to death” in order to get the game finished by Summer 2023.

Mega Man Battle Network Tankobon to Appear in April 2023

mega man battle network tankobon manga

A new tankobon collecting chapters of the Mega Man Battle Network manga will appear in bookstores from late April 2023. The title is Mega Man Battle Network New Stories 2023. As the title implies, there will also be new chapters that did not appear in its original Monthly CoroCoro Comic medium. [Thanks, Famitsu!]

The reason why the New Stories 2023 tankobon will come out in April 2023 is because that’s around when the Mega Man Battle Network Legacy Collection will debut. As a reminder, its release date will be April 14, 2023 and it will come out for the PS4, Nintendo Switch, and Windows PC (via Steam).

There will be a total of five chapters in New Stories 2023. They are:

  • Lan Gets Amnesia?
  • Operation: Make Rock & Roll Friends Again
  • Fear! Uncover the Secret of Phantom Isle
  • Proto Man Runs Away From Home
  • Hanayashiki Mission 2: Destroy The Cause of The Rampaging Panda Car!

Ryo Takamisaki is the creator behind the Mega Man NT manga series. Thirteen tankobon appeared in Japan from 2001 to 2006, with the English versions appearing from 2004. Viz Media licensed it for North America.

How to Finish the ‘A Young Girl’s Wish’ Octopath Traveler 2 Side Story

How to Finish the ‘A Young Girl’s Wish’ Octopath Traveler 2 Side Story

A lot of the Octopath Traveler 2 side stories are straightforward. However, every once in a while there’s a multipart endeavor. Partitio’s Scent of Commerce gramophone quest and the “Procuring Peculiar Tomes” side story are two of them. However, I think I’d consider “A Young Girl’s Wish” one of the most potentially frustrating Octopath Traveler 2 ones. So much so that it was only after a friend offered an assist that I stopped losing my mind and found the last part. (Thanks, Chris!)

In “A Young Girl’s Wish” in Octopath Traveler 2, you’re dealing with the Apathetic Girl in Conning Creek. (She’s at the cemetery near Osvald’s former home.) She’s dying and essentially has a bucket list of things she’d like to experience before she goes. Which means you need to make her wishes come true.

Yoshida Says Final Fantasy XVI Team Interested in PC Port

1 year 1 month ago

Final Fantasy XVI PC

In an interview on the Japanese Playstation Blog, Final Fantasy XVI Producer Naoki Yoshida clarified his previous words regarding the possibility of the game getting a PC release. Final Fantasy XVI is going to be a PS5 timed exclusive for a period of six months after its release on June 22, 2023. During the interview, Yoshida said that the game won’t release on PC immediately after the exclusivity period, but that the development team is interested in eventually making a PC port.

Here is a direct quote from Yoshida about FFXVI, the six-month exclusivity period, and a possible PC version:

I want to make it clear that the PC version will not release in six months [after the initial release date.] (…) We would like to release [a PC version] eventually, and I think we will, but right now we are not at a stage where we can say when.

Yoshida wanted to clarify his previous statement from back in January 2023, when he told people to buy a PS5 if they wanted to play the game. In this new interview, the producer said that he didn’t mean to imply a PC version was out of the picture, but that the hypothetical PC version wouldn’t release immediately after the exclusivity period, as it would take more than six months to optimize the game for PC.

Deal Alert: 1TB Micro SDXC Memory Card (Nintendo Switch Compatible) for $84.98

1 year 1 month ago

Amazon is currently a Micro Center 1TB Micro SDXC card for only $84.98. That's one of the least expensive 1TB Micro SDXC cards we've seen, and it's fully compatible with the Nintendo Switch console.

If you've started compiling a collection of digital games, you probably already know just how limited the Switch's base storage capacity. With only 32GB of starting space (and some of it reserved for the OS), you'll barely fit The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild and Pokemon Sword or Shield, which tap out at 13.5GB each! There's only one expansion slot in the Switch console so you want to make sure you get the biggest card you can afford.

1TB Micro SDXC Card (Switch Compatible) for $84.98

Micro Center is a legitimate company; they have about two dozen retail stores and they've been around for over 40 years. This particular brand of Micro SDXC card has over 14,000 reviews on Amazon with an average user score of 4.6/5. The Micro Center "Premium" card has a faster Class U3 rating, which means it boasts a minimum read speed of 30MB/s. Of course if you plan to use this in a Nintendo Switch, it doesn't even matter. The Nintendo Switch can only support U1 (10MB/s) speeds, so a higher rated U3 speed will just be throttled back down to U1 speeds anyways. So make sure your money goes into maximum storage capacity, not maximum speed.

Age of Wonders 4: The First Preview of This Wild 4X Game

1 year 1 month ago

I've spent thousands of hours of my life exploring, exploiting, expanding, and exterminating my way through 4X games like Age of Wonders 4. But typically, even at the end of the most epic campaigns stretching across the ages, it all disappears when I'm done. Win or lose. Like tears in rain. In Triumph Studios' latest fantasy civilization builder, though, the end is only the beginning. My beloved ruler can ascend to godhood and join a pantheon that persists from one world to the next, continuing to have an impact on the bigger picture and unlocking new empire options. And while I haven't seen it play out over dozens of campaigns yet, it's a very exciting prospect.

This was actually my first foray into Age of Wonders proper, as I was introduced to the series through the sci-fi spinoff, Planetfall. And it feels very similar, with a Civilization-like overworld where you build cities, exploit resources, train armies, and deal with rival powers. When two armies meet on the map, though, Age of Wonders 4 zooms way in to an XCOM-like, turn-based battle system where each of your units can move and act independently. Fortunately, these fights don't tend to drag on so long that it bogs down the pacing of the overworld stuff, but they still give you enough time to pull off some clever tactics.

Suicide Squad: Kill the Justice League Is a Litmus Test for Live-Service Games

1 year 1 month ago

Rocksteady Studios is an insanely talented game developer. If they didn’t single-handedly prove that you could make an amazing AAA superhero video game, they sure as hell get the lion’s share of the credit thanks to the deservedly beloved Batman: Arkham trilogy. But they left Batman behind after 2015’s Arkham Knight, and…we haven’t heard from them since (hat tip to the fun little 90-minute Batman: Arkham VR experience that launched alongside the PSVR1 in 2016). Eventually, we got the official word as to what the studio was doing next: Suicide Squad: Kill the Justice League, a four-player co-op live-service third-person shooter.

Individually, none of those descriptors make my skin crawl, but together? Yikes. And unfortunately, after last week’s extended Suicide Squad gameplay showcase at the Sony State of Play (yeah, I know, this is an Xbox column, but it’s an Xbox game too so just roll with me here), those adjectives all describe Kill the Justice League, a game in which the primary objective of the game appears to be <checks notes> “shoot and/or punch anything purple.” Oh, and it’s also got a Battle Pass and it requires an online connection at all times, even if you’re playing solo.

Dead by Daylight Is Getting a Movie Adaptation

1 year 1 month ago

Multiplayer survival horror game Dead by Daylight is getting a film adaptation from Atomic Monster and Blumhouse.

As reported by Variety, the two horror movie powerhouses are teaming up with developer Behaviour Interactive to create the film, though haven't shared any details outside of it being an expansion of the Dead by Daylight universe.

The film is also likely still a few years away, as Atomic Monster's James Wan and Blumhouse's Jason Blum have only just started searching for a director and screenwriter. Wan, Blum and Behaviour's executive vice president Stephen Mulrooney will act as producers.

"We couldn’t be more thrilled to work with Jason Blum and James Wan, two giants of the horror film industry, to further expand the Dead by Daylight universe,” said Mulrooney "At Behaviour, our motto is to create unique moments, together, forever. Atomic Monster and Blumhouse are the ideal partners to craft Dead by Daylight’s killer entrance onto the big screen."

Wan said he and his team at Atomic Monster are big fans of Dead by Daylight, which is "perfect for a scary cinematic adaptation" thanks to its "building of an incredible environment teeming with atmosphere and terrifying villains".

For those worried the film might lose the essence of what Dead by Daylight is all about, Blum added that the team is hoping to find a director and screenwriter who is already a fan. "[We] think it’s imperative we find someone who appreciates and loves the world as much as we do, to help us bring the game to the big screen," he said.

"I would love to see it," McGinn told GamesRadar about a potential remake of the open-world sandbox game. He certainly isn't alone in his thinking as he told the outlet that Hit & Run is "still the highest-rated Simpsons game ever made, according to Metacritic."

The 2003 video game was a critical and commercial success, with players praising the game for its "brilliant use" of the license and its parodical take on Rockstar's Grand Theft Auto franchise. (According to McGinn, the game was pitched to the publisher as "GTA for kids.")

Hit & Run was unique as it featured a fully-realized digital Springfield for the first time ever, with many of the show's iconic locations and characters dotted across its different "districts" (levels) for players to explore while also participating in various story-based missions.

You can still play Hit & Run thanks to some handy emulators that allow for modern controllers, but that hasn't stopped fans from calling for a remake with a modern interpretation of Springfield, especially since the animated series now has over 740 episodes to draw from.

1 year 1 month ago

Nintendo has announced that Mario Kart 8 Deluxe's Booster Course Pass Wave 4 is arriving next week on March 10.

The release date was announced in a new trailer (below) in which Nintendo showed off the eight new tracks coming to the game alongside the return of Birdo as a playable character.

The eight tracks featured in Wave 4 are Singapore Speedway, Bangkok Rush, and Amsterdam Drift from Mario Kart Tour, Donkey Kong Summit from Mario Kart Wii, Riverside Park from Mario Kart Super Circuit, Mario Circuit from Mario Kart DS, Waluigi Stadium from Double Dash, and one brand new track: Yoshi's Island.

Birdo will also be making a return in all of its vibrant colours, and will feature in the medium weight class alongside the likes of Mario and the Inkling Girl.

The eight tracks will only be available as part of the $24.99 Booster Course Pass and not as an individual add-on, though purchasing the DLC also grants users to the 24 previously released courses and another 16 later in the year.

The Booster Course DLC kicked off in March with Wave 1 bringing Paris Promenade, Toad Circuit, Choco Mountain, Coconut Mall, Tokyo Blur, Shroom Ridge, Sky Garden, and Ninja Hideaway to Mario Kart 8 Deluxe.

Resident Evil 4 Remake: 8 Exciting New Details

1 year 1 month ago

Resident Evil 4 Remake is just a few weeks away but IGN got one more look at the highly-anticipated survival horror game ahead of the launch, with plenty of enticing new details to pore over. While we would have preferred to actually play the game, especially since it’s so close to release, instead we were shown just under 20 minutes of new Resident Evil 4 Remake footage. However, it gave us enough of a look to spot some of what we think will be the biggest changes coming to the horror classic.

Parrying

In an interview with IGN about how the development team figured out what new gameplay mechanics to add to Resident Evil 4 Remake, director Yasuhiro Ampo said, “when looking into making the remake, the team didn’t want to disturb the main mechanics that the original game had. However, when looking into the game, they looked into what they could add on top of what was already there, what was already good, and making everything even better.”

To highlight this philosophy, Ampo specifically cited knife combat, which is enhanced from the original. In the original Resident Evil 4, Leon would use the knife as a last resort; in the Remake, Leon is able to parry attacks, making the knife not only a viable weapon but a necessary one, especially if you’re running low on health.

Parrying enemy attacks transforms the knife from a last-ditch tool and glorified wooden crate opener into a defensive tool where you’re able to keep yourself alive just a little bit longer, so long as you have the dexterity to block incoming attacks.
