Hayley Atwell Cast As Lara Croft In Netflix’s Tomb Raider Anime

2 years 7 months ago

Netflix announced it was developing an animated Tomb Raider series back in January, and now we know it will be an anime and who will be voicing Lara Croft. Hayley Atwell, whose roles include portraying Agent Peggy Carter in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, will portray the iconic explorer.

In addition to Marvel, Atwell’s credits include 2015's Cinderella, Christopher Robin, and the upcoming Misson Impossible 7. As for the show itself, Netflix still hasn’t divulged plot details or a premiere date but confirms Lara’s next adventure takes place after the events of Crystal Dynamic’s Tomb Raider reboot trilogy, which concluded with 2018’s Shadow of the Tomb Raider. Atwell will be the third actress to portray this version of Lara following Camilla Luddington, who voiced Lara the reboot trilogy, and Alicia Vikander, who portrayed a live-action take on the modernized Lara in 2018's Tomb Raider film.

Marvel’s Wolverine Is A 'Mature', Full-Sized Game, According To Creative Director

2 years 7 months ago

Insomniac Games revealed last week that it’s got another superhero game in the works, Marvel’s Wolverine. With that excitement came a lot of questions. What style of game will it be? Who’s voicing Logan? Will it be an R-rated gorefest or tonally in the ballpark of Marvel’s Spider-Man? We now have an answer to a couple of those questions.

Wolverine’s creative director, Brian Horton, took to Twitter to announce his role on the project. Horton previously directed Spider-Man: Miles Morales, which prompted a fan to ask if the Wolverine’s scope was similar in size or something bigger. Horton responded by simply stating Wolverine will be “full size, mature tone.” He doesn’t elaborate beyond that, but I’m sure some fans will breathe easier given some of the online worries that Wolverine might be a sunshine and hugs parade. Now, “Mature tone” doesn’t necessarily mean it’ll be M-rated, but we’ll have to wait and see.

Epic Games Appeals Judge's Decision In Case Against Apple

2 years 7 months ago

Following a ruling on Friday that resulted in an injunction against Apple, Epic Games has chosen to continue its legal pursuits and appeal the decision. Judge Yvonne Gonzalez-Rogers has decided Epic did not give sufficient evidence to prove Apple was a monopolistic force in the video gaming space.

“Notice is hereby given that Epic Games, Inc… appeals to the United States Court of Appeals for the Ninth Circuit from the final Judgment entered on September 10, 2021 (ECF No. 814), and all orders leading to or producing that judgment,” reads the appeal Epic filed on Sunday. Why appeal the result, including an injunction that opened up payment choices for app developers? For one thing, Epic was found in breach of contract for bypassing Apple’s in-app payment systems for a short time. The judge ordered the Unreal Engine creator to pay a sum of $3.6 million, the 30% cut Apple would have received if payments were processed based on what was agreed.

Yoko Taro’s Next Game Is A Tabletop RPG

2 years 7 months ago

Earlier this year, creative director Yoko Taro vaguely revealed a new project during Replicant’s first official livestream. “[This is] a somewhat unusual game,” Taro stated emphatically. “I’ve created something mysterious that I have no idea to explain.” Producer Yosuke Saito added that the game will feel “nostalgic and new” and that the development team believes “it’ll definitely sell well.” Furthermore, in a surprise announcement, Yoko Taro’s next game was finally uncovered. It’s a tabletop RPG, a first for the eccentric game designer.

God Of War: Ragnarok's Director Speaks With Us About This Game's Version Of Thor

2 years 7 months ago

Ragnarok is coming in the new God of War. Kratos and his son Atreus may be gearing up to battle some of the remaining members in the Norse pantheon, and we know one for sure that's going to show up. In a stinger tease at the end of the previous game, Thor, the legendary god of thunder, arrived at our protagonists’ front door unannounced. We all know the headstrong and musclebound Thor from the MCU or other depictions, but Sony Santa Monica is taking a different approach for the popular mythological figure. Our own Alex Stadnik spoke with God of War: Ragnarok’s director Eric Williams and creative director Cory Barlog about how the Asgardian is portrayed in the new game and why the team settled on his rounded physique.

“Well, I don’t know, we just want him to be a big boy, you know. There’s Marvel’s interpretation of him is one thing. It’s interesting. We wanted to, you know, go a little deeper into the mythology itself,” Williams says about Thor having a burlier body type. Being godly is all about presence, and while this version of Thor doesn’t look like a sculpted underwear model, his traits of power and intensity are no less effective.  Williams also talks about people he knows in real life with a bigger stature and how that translates into Thor: “They have a presence immediately. And it’s not always because of muscles. They’re just like that is a wall of a human being, you know. So this is a wall of a God, you know, and that’s why it was very important.”

Far Cry 6 Is Crossing Over With Stranger Things And Rambo, And Gives You Control Of Past Far Cry Villains

2 years 7 months ago

Far Cry 6's DLC invites you into the minds of madmen, reminds us why Rambo is awesome, and veers into unexpected territory with a Stranger Things crossover. Ubisoft shared new details for this exciting post-launch content and also gives us a nice look at what we can expect (which you can see in the trailer above). After Far Cry 6 launches on October 7, and players hopefully make it through the campaign, Ubisoft is releasing three DLC episodes, each giving you control of a different villain from Far Cry's past.

The first episode, titled "Vaas: insanity" brings you into the mind of Far Cry 3's antagonist Vaas Montenegro. Episode two is called "Pagan: Control" and dives into the life of Far Cry 4's Pagan Min. The final episode, "Joseph: Collapse," focuses on Far Cry 5' Joseph Seed. All of these returning villains are voiced by the same actors from the core games. In a press release, Ubisoft says each of these characters is "struggling to escape the horrors of their own minds."

The Making Of Life Is Strange: True Colors

2 years 7 months ago

Life is Strange made a name for itself by focusing on relatable characters dealing with complex, real-life issues. The series has tackled mental health, identity, and even racism in its stories. Along the way, relationships between characters, such as Chloe and Max’s friendship and Sean and Daniel’s sibling bond, have driven each narrative in memorable ways. The games have always centered on our choices and how they shape the people and world around us. As the series goes into its third iteration, it leans into its strength of authentically portraying life’s hardships and complicated emotions.

The latest entry, Life is Strange: True Colors, is a new starting point, starring a new character with a different power: Empathy. It’s also the first mainline entry not being developed by original development studio Dontnod; instead, it is being created by Deck Nine, the team responsible for the outstanding Before the Storm prequel. Here’s a behind-the-scenes look at how Alex Chen’s journey came to life and why empathy was always a driving force in its creation.

How God of War Ragnarok's New Director Brings A Different Perspective To The Series

2 years 7 months ago

If you're familiar with the development of 2018's God of War, you'll know how personal of a game it was for Cory Barlog. The game's director has long talked about the importance of crafting Kratos' return to the PlayStation scene as a father-son story that pushed the violent Greek god into a more caring figure. The gamble worked, and Sony Santa Monica was able to craft a thoughtful and epic tale that took the best of the original series and brought it to a new audience.

But now times are charging, and Barlog is stepping away to let series veteran Eric Williams run Kratos' next adventure. During our chat with Williams, the newly announced game director talked to us about how he's struggled with the father-son story and what he plans on bringing to the table for Ragnarok.

Insomniac's Upcoming Spider-Man 2 Inspires An Amazing PS5 Custom Controller

2 years 7 months ago

Insomniac Games and Sony Interactive Entertainment shocked the world yesterday with two gargantuan reveals. We first learned Insomniac was making a Wolverine game, spearheaded by Brian Horton (creative director) and Cameron Christian (game director). This duo recently worked together at Insomniac on Marvel's Spider-Man: Miles Morales. That bombshell announcement was quickly followed up with another: Insomniac is also working on Marvel's Spider-Man 2, and it's coming out in 2023!

If you are into controller and console fan art, you are likely familiar with the work of an artist known only as "Pope." His Twitter feed is filled with his creations, and one of his latest is a custom PlayStation 5 controller for Marvel's Spider-Man 2. Spongebob Shows Off His Moves In Nickelodeon All-Star Brawl

2 years 7 months ago

Since its announcement in July, Nickelodeon All-Star Brawl has been making waves as potentially the next big platform fighter. Its premise is simple, take the formula that makes Super Smash Bros great and retrofit another group of beloved characters into a similar game. For developers Ludocity and Fair Play Labs, that roster is a popular group of Nicktoons from the early 90s through today. In a new gameplay trailer, Fair Play’s Markus Villalobos breaks down the moves of the Krabby Patty flipping sea dweller Spongebob Squarepants.

Villalobos describes Spongebob as an "all-arounder" and a "jack-of-all-trades-master-of-none." He’s a perfect character for new players to hop into the game with and get to brawling. Character move sets are tied to directional inputs and light, strong, and special attack buttons. Spongebob’s light and strong attacks are all fairly standard.

One standout maneuver is his neutral strong attack which swings his trusty jellyfishing net on the ground or in mid-air. Spongebob’s “Imaginaaation Kick” – performed by hitting down and strong attack in the air – unleashes a downward rainbow axe kick. This attack is pointed out by Villalobos as being a move opponents will hate going up against when returning to the edge of the stage.

New Metroid Dread Trailer Is A Perfect Gameplay Primer

2 years 7 months ago

Metroid is one of the most beloved series in gaming, and when a new entry releases it is a big deal. We've already seen a few trailers that highlight her new abilities, and a few weeks back, I wrote an opinion on why the next Metroid should take inspirations from indie games, but if you see need more Metroid Dread news, then check out Nintendo's latest trailer that explores some of the new enemies Samus will fight, showcases some of her incredible abilities, and offers a taste of the incredible sites that await players on Planet ZDR.

In June, Brian Shea talked to the developers about why Metroid Dread took so long to develop. The name "Metroid Dread" has been floating around since 2004. "At the time that we came up with the idea, the hardware wasn't there; the technological concepts weren't working with our vision," Nintendo's Yoshio Sakamoto, who serves as producer on Metroid Dread, told us. "We had to put it on hold. Then some time later, we started again, but then we stopped again for pretty much the same reasons."

Epic Games Vs Apple Legal Dispute Leads To An Injunction For In-App Purchases

2 years 7 months ago

Months after the trial between Epic Games and Apple began, a ruling has been filed which finds Apple not in violation of existing Anti-trust laws at the state level in California nor federal. This ruling doesn’t move the needle in how Apple operates its App Store, nor does it allow other marketplaces to exist on Apple devices. However, Judge Yvonne Gonzalez-Rogers has issued a permanent injunction against Apple that opens the doors for how payments can be processed within applications on iOS devices.

Here’s the relevant text from the injunction statement. We’ll go over what it means after:

Square Enix Announces Forspoken, Final Fantasy Origin Livestreams For Tokyo Game Show

2 years 7 months ago

The presentation schedule for this year's Tokyo Game Show recently rolled out, and Square Enix confirmed when and where you can catch its big live stream. Additionally, it announced individual showcases highlighting Forspoken, Stranger of Paradise Final Fantasy Origin, and Final Fantasy VII: The First Soldier.

As previously revealed, Square Enix Presents will air on October 1 at 3:00 am Pacific. It hasn’t tipped its hand on what to expect from the larger catch-all showcase, but you can check it out (with English subtitles) on its official YouTube channel

The same rings true for the game-specific streams airing throughout the weekend. If you don’t mind waking up early, here’s when you can catch them live.

Forspoken, which just reappeared with a stunning new trailer during this week’s PlayStation Showcase, will have a presentation on October 1 at 6:00 a.m. Pacific. Star Wars Knights Of The Old Republic's Biggest Issue Is How It Plays

2 years 7 months ago

Among many big surprises coming from a showcase loaded with top-tier announcements, the reveal of the Star Wars Knights of the Old Republic Remake was close to earthshattering. While we saw almost nothing substantial of the project coming from Aspyr and Lucasfilm Games, I’m no less pumped for the opportunity to play through a game. Even if it’s a game I’ve started and dropped well over a dozen times.  This remake is a chance for redemption between me and KOTOR, and my main annoyance and barrier to entry will hopefully find a rework: the user experience.

Being an expansive RPG from the original Xbox, Knights of the Old Republic was ambitious. You can see Bioware’s design threads from this game through Mass Effect and Dragon Age, but aspects those games have over KOTOR are UI and controls I can parse and tolerate for long periods. It makes sense, though. Mass Effect came years after the fact. Lessons and techniques have been integrated and developed to make combat more enjoyable and menus easier to navigate over time, all of which never funneled back to the classic Star Wars RPG in subsequent iterations.

Insomniac’s Wolverine Needs To Occupy The Same World As Marvel’s Spider-Man

2 years 7 months ago

Today, Insomniac Games pulled the curtain back on not one but two Marvel projects: Spider-Man 2 and Wolverine. While the former game was expected given the trajectory and success of the first Spider-Man and Miles Morales, a game based on Logan was a welcomed surprise. The team has proven it knows how to wield superpowers as adeptly as any of Marvel’s heroes, and I’m excited to see them tackle another main-eventer. More so, I hope this game signifies the establishment of Insomniac’s own video game Marvel universe.

Marvel’s Spider-Man firmly established the presence of other heroes via landmarks within New York City. Avengers Tower, the Sanctum Sanctorum, the law firm of Nelson & Murdock, and many other recognizable locations provided visible teasers of heroes Insomniac could potentially tackle. The more time I spent swinging around the city, nimbly taking out bad guys, and absorbing the excellent story, the more excited I became at the idea of Insomniac applying the same craftsmanship to any hero under Marvel’s umbrella. Wolverine works about as well as anyone.

Rainbow Six Extraction's New Trailer Oozes With Alien Action

2 years 7 months ago

Packed in between huge reveals in today’s Sony Showcase was a reminder that Rainbow Six Extraction is lurking around the corner. After a recent delay into next year, the operators of Team Rainbow are gearing up to defend the world from a threat outside of the typical terrorist organization.

Rainbow Six Extraction builds on what makes Siege great. The player will team up as a chosen operator with a group of other operators, but instead of facing off against another team of humans, Extraction’s enemies are alien in origin. We see shots of the different extra-terrestrial entities skulking around the environments looking to take players down throughout the trailer. Bipedal masses with spikes for limbs and ground crawling beast-like creatures are just the tip of what the Rainbow has to deal with. A creeping black substance spreads around the environment, corrupting everything it touches and claiming it for these alien monstrosities.

Insomniac's Spider-Man 2 Doesn't Need Co-op

2 years 7 months ago

Insomniac's debut trailer for Spider-Man 2 was an incredible tease for fans of the studio's first two Spider-Man games. Peter and Miles even appear to perform a team-up attack at one point in the trailer, which has many fans speculating that the game could feature a co-op mode. This isn't the first time; fans have speculated about co-op since the release of Insomniac's first Spider-Man game in 2018. But here's the thing: Spider-Man 2 doesn't need co-op. In fact, it could be bad for the game.

Don't get me wrong. I love a good co-op game. Left 4 Dead, Cuphead, Sea of Thieves, and It Takes Two are all games I played with a friend, and I think they were better experiences for it. However, those titles were all design from the ground up with co-op in mind.

Tchia Sails Onto PlayStation Consoles And PC In 2022

2 years 7 months ago

It’s been a little while since we last heard from Tchia, the tropical mind-hopping adventure game that evokes games like The Legend of Zelda: The Wind Waker. Based on the island of New Caledonia, players control a young girl with the magical ability to take over animals and objects. A new trailer premiering during today's PlayStation Showcase provided another eye-catching look at the intriguing game in action.

The small protagonist’s story is still unknown in terms of specifics, but developer Awaceb describes it as a “journey of discovery and growth”. We do see a scene of an elder tasking the girl with locating a figure named Meavora, who apparently has evil in his heart. Dealing with that will call on her to evoke her power to inhabit the bodies of animals.

Vampire: The Masquerade - Bloodhunt Is Coming To PS5 Soon

While we're still awaiting news on the future of Vampire: The Masquerade - Bloodlines 2, another studio is taking a crack at this universe with its own adventure found in Bloodhunt. Bloodhunt is a battle royale take on the vampire niche and surprisingly? It works really well! For those interested in sinking their fangs into this online journey, a new trailer shows off what Bloodhunt will have to offer when it arrives on PlayStation 5 later this year.

We previously got our hands on the game a few months ago and were intrigued with how perfectly Masquerade fit into the Battle Royale genre. It was clear that Sharkmob AB has a lot of love for the lore of this universe and was able to take that love and craft it into a competitive experience for fans to enjoy. With various classes that Masquerade fans will be intimately familiar with, Bloodhunt will allow players to transform into the creatures they've come to know so well, including the clans from whence they hail from. Each clan has unique skills that make sense for their builds, providing unique tactical advantages when taking to the streets in hunger.

The First God Of War Ragnarok Footage Closes An Impressive PlayStation Showcase

2 years 7 months ago

None other than God of War Ragnorok could headline a stunner of a showcase like today’s stream from the Playstation brand. Both Kratos and his son Atreus return for the sequel, as well as a few other faces from the previous game. Well, one of them is only a face.

Atreus is worried about Fimbulwinter leading into the prophesized Ragnarok, but he wants to explore the world and learn more about who he and Loki are – those who have finished 2018's God of War will know what he’s talking about. Kratos warns him about his curiosity leading to a war with Asgard and the gods themselves, a situation he’s all too familiar with.

Environments are snowy like some earlier areas in the prequel. At one point Kratos and Atreus are shown dogsledding over a frozen lake, which looks like it may be the hub area Kratos had previously explored. Mimir, the decapitated travel companion of the duo is once again attached to Kratos’ hip, and I’m very happy to see him back in the cast.

Spider-Man 2 Announced For 2023 Release

2 years 7 months ago

After the success of Spider-Man and Spider-Man: Miles Morales, Sony and Insomniac today revealed the next installment in the award-winning video game series: Spider-Man 2 is coming in 2023.

The trailer offered some serious teasing, but little in the way of concrete info. With that said, we see a number of nods to villains and conflicts from the Spider-Man fiction. We see very brief gameplay sequences of Miles using his electrified venom powers, as well as separate action scenes with Peter fighting while using a suit seemingly inspired by the Iron Spider suit from the comics. And in one especially intrigruing moment that is sure to lead to lots of speculation about the possibility of cooperative play, we see Peter and Miles working together to bring down an enemy.

The trailer also features voiceover from someone who seems to be looking for a challenge in his face-off against the two Spider-Man heroes, and based on the fiction, it seems likely that the voice might be Kraven the Hunter.

Finally, in one of the biggest reveals of the video, the final scene shows a very brief look at Venom, who is sure to cause all sorts of problems for the webslingers.

Uncharted: Legacy Of Thieves Collection Brings A Thief’s End And The Lost Legacy To PS5 And PC

2 years 7 months ago

Uncharted 4: A Thief’s End and Uncharted: The Lost Legacy are coming to PlayStation 5 in one package. That bundle, dubbed Uncharted: Legacy of Thieves Collection, remasters the final two Uncharted adventures to give fans and newcomers the most impressive versions of both titles.

The trailer bills the collection as a remaster but doesn’t list any specific improvements. One would imagine 60 fps/4K resolution per the usual improvements for current-gen remasters.

Uncharted 4: A Thief’s End launched in 2016 and served as a critically lauded send-off for Nathan Drake. The game centers around the now-retired explorer embarking on one last mission at the behest of his long-lost brother, Sam. In our review, we scored the game a 9.5 out of 10 with Game Informer editor-in-chief Andrew Reiner declaring it “the best Uncharted yet, delivering a story I didn’t want to end, and an adventure that concludes with a hell of a payoff.”

Get A First Look At Footage Of Alan Wake Remastered

After being announced a few short days ago, Sony showed off the first footage of Alan Wake Remastered at their PlayStation 5 showcase this afternoon. Epic Games is now publishing the title as it makes its reappearance across a variety of platforms. Check out the first footage of the remaster below.

In this new footage, we get a look at Bright Falls and the deciduous areas surrounding it. Alan sets out on a one man mission with a gun and flashlight in hand to save his wife Alice. This remaster is giving the 11-year-old game a big facelift. Resolution is obviously getting a boost, as well as textures. But most important for the Alan Wake experience, the lighting looks to be largely improved.

Originally released in 2010 on Xbox 360, Remedy’s Alan Wake follows a thriller novelist through his supernatural journeys in the fictional Washington town of Bright Falls. At Sony's PlayStation showcase today, a new trailer debuted, and it's all kinds of eccentric and creepy as it shows the main character being tormented by a chilling antagonist. The dark figure professes, "People always decry the truth when forced to face it" and "The world rests on the precipice of transformation." He ends his speech by saying, "A new world will dawn!"

The trailer, which you can see above, gives some more hints about the story and showcases the eerie creatures you'll face. One thing of note is that part of the protagonist's face disappears as he fights. It also appears that the main character has a connection to a girl in a hospital bed, which the villain uses to taunt him. Time will tell what it all means, but the trailer revealed we'll find out this spring.

For those who aren't in the know. Ghostwire: Tokyo is the new game from Tango Gameworks, the studio founded by Resident Evil mastermind Shinji Mikami who brought us The Evil Within series. People in Tokyo are mysteriously disappearing, and you are tasked with figuring out what’s going on while using your supernatural powers to battle eerie creatures.

Grand Theft Auto V Now Coming To PlayStation 5 Spring 2022

2 years 7 months ago

Though the trailer begins by welcoming fans back to Los Santos, it looks like the PlayStation 5 isn't ready with that welcome just yet. Sony announced that Grand Theft Auto V would make its way onto the platform during the console's reveal event last year. Soon after, the details about the Fall release date hit as well, but unfortunately for fans that were excited to experience Rockstar's hit again, or first the first time, with all-new improvements, today's announcement means a few more months of waiting. And though the news broke during a PlayStation event,  Xbox owners shouldn't be expecting to pick up the game this year either.

Tiny Tina’s Wonderlands Releases March 2022

2 years 7 months ago

Fantasy meets Borderlands in a big way with Tiny Tina’s Wonderland, where you can experience a world full of dungeons and dragons with that signature Borderlands charm and style. The release date? March 25, 2022. A trailer showcasing tons of fantasy elements mixed with Borderlands elements gives off a chaotic classic fantasy vibe that’s definitely a recognizable Borderlands game – but with an extreme Dungeons & Dragons slant, all the way to character sheets and little figures walking around a board or map. Take a look at the brand new gameplay trailer from the PlayStation showcase today right here. It’s all fairly absurd and dialed up to one million, which is absolutely on-brand for Tiny Tina’s slice of the Borderlands universe.

The trailer highlights dozens of classic fantasy tropes and concepts, including skeletons and uhhh, giant sharks. Frankly, it looks like a great way to roll up aspects of the existing franchise in a new package, since common, we’re all tired of slaughtering wasteland bandits en-masse while Claptrap screeches in our ears.
