Monkey Island is coming to Sea of Thieves in a three-episode adventure

Two years of furiously willing it into existence has paid off! Monkey Island is finally, FINALLY coming to Sea of Thieves in a major story crossover starting on 20th July this year.

It's not a complete surprise, of course; Rare first teased a potential Monkey Island crossover for Sea of Thieves back in 2021, hiding a certain ship away in a tiny corner of its ambitious Pirates of the Caribbean adventure. And now self-proclaimed mighty pirate Guybrush Threepwood and friends will be getting a similar treatment across three brand-new Tall Tales.

Sea of Thieves: The Legend of Monkey Island - as Rare's crossover is officially known - will start its first-person, point-and-click-inspired escapade on Mêlée Island, where an extremely beardy Threepwood is inexplicably receiving adulation from his peers. What follows is a "love-letter to the classic adventure game" that'll feature a host of familiar faces, including Elaine, Murray the Demonic Talking Skull, captain LeChuck, and more.

Microsoft Flight Simulator 2024 features an incredible list of new flight activities

Microsoft Flight Simulator has been a huge success for Xbox - and it's a success that developer Asobo is seemingly capitalising on with the feature-saturated Microsoft Flight Simulator 2024.

It's like Asobo sat down and brainstormed every use for a plane that's not just flying from A to B, and worked to put it in Microsoft Flight Sim. The list is frankly astonishing, and includes:

Aerial firefighting, search and rescue, helicopter cargo transport, air ambulance, crop dusting, mountain rescue, skydive aviation, aerial construction, cargo transport, VIP charter service, air racing, glider pilot, scientific research, low altitude training, experimental trips, executive transport service, airship tours and hot air balloon trips. Phew.

Spiritfarer developer's new game is a 33-player co-op action-RPG

At Xbox's 2023 showcase today we just got out first glimpse of Thunder Lotus' new game. The developer behind Spiritfarer and Sundered has been working on 33 Immortals, a top-down action-RPG roguelite with a delicate hand-painted art style and co-op for 33 players. What?!

It looks like a fascinating piece of work, with a delicate, rather serious tone, sonorous choral music, and delicate animation. But also: 33 players in an action-RPG! Based on a bit of gameplay, 33 Immortals won't scrimp when it comes to throwing loads of enemies your way, and there was a lovely bullet hell element to some of the spells going off.

33 Immortals will be released in 2024 for Xbox X/S, and will appear day one on Game Pass.

We Happy Few developer reveals South of Midnight at Xbox Showcase

Compulsion, the developer behind We Happy Few, has unveiled its new game: South of Midnight.

The game was introduced as part of this evening's Xbox showcase.

It is described as a "fantastical" and "macabre third-person action-adventure", which is set in the American Deep South. I really like the look of the art style for this one, but before I prattle on too much, here is a little trailer for South of Midnight.

Ubisoft's The Division studio reveals Star Wars Outlaws

Tonight's Xbox Showcase gave us our first quick look at Star Wars Outlaws, from Ubisoft Massive, developer of The Division. It's coming to PC, PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X/S in 2024.

A CGI trailer showed a bounty hunter-stuffed trailer starring a smuggler character named Kay. What we saw offered just a glimpse, but it was very, very Star Wars.

Cue scenes with Star Destroyers, TIE Fighters, people frozen in carbonite, and at least one Hutt.

Cyberpunk: Phantom Liberty adds new Edgerunners-inspired Cyberware limit

When you think about it, a spy thriller is a perfect fit for CD Projekt Red's Cyberpunk 2077. The original game was, if nothing else, a game swimming in uncertainty and conspiracy. It's riddled with spies and corporate espionage, duplicitous side characters with agendas of their own. Its first act ends in a dramatic heist. And in many ways, you don't know what consequences your choices might create.

CD Projekt unveiled its Phantom Liberty DLC with a typically bombastic trailer today at the Xbox showcase, but we've also seen it behind closed doors out in Los Angeles - a good chunk of it, in fact - as we played through about an hour of the expansion and spoke to game director Gabriel Amatangelo and lead environment artist Kacper Niepokólczycki about what you can expect.

Our impressions? Compared to the explosiveness of the base game's original unveiling, and its trailer today, Phantom Liberty was a little more muted.

How a slightly wonky Transformers show gave us a proper video game classic

Hello! Just to say: yes, Graeme wrote a lovely retrospective of this game almost a decade ago and it's a terrific read. But with the game on people's minds again it felt like a welcome opportunity to revisit a real PS2 legend.

Did you know that Transformers will be 40 years old next year? Yep, the long running franchise that started life as a (blindingly successful) attempt to sell Japanese robot toys to American kids is almost as old as me. Being a fan of something for that long, especially when it's never really taken a break, can be a bit weird, as one day you'll suddenly realise that the bits that you remember being new-fangled upstarts are now old enough to vote and have kids and stuff. Y'know, if they were people and not cartoons and toys and whatnot.

Transformers Armada is one of those things. Released in 2002, the cartoon and accompanying toyline kicked off what has become known as the Unicron Trilogy, and is a bit of a mixed bag. The show was absolute bobbins, even before taking into account a lot of jank caused by production problems. Although there were some great toys, many were hampered by assorted gimmicks, resulting in limited articulation and transformation in order to allow for wee-woo noises, flashing lights and spring-loaded flaps.

Balan Wonderworld co-dev Arzest is "leading development" on Sonic Superstars

Talking to Eurogamer at Summer Games Fest today, Sonic Team vice president of product development Takashi Iizuka has clarified the question of the newly unveiled Sonic Superstars' main developer: it's being led by Arzest, the Japanese studio which recently co-developed Fantasian and the troubled Balan Wonderworld - and that's headed up by Sonic's original creator Naoto Ohshima.

"This is a brand new classic Sonic Game that's been developed," Iizuka-san said, via translator, "and in order to recreate that classic Sonic gameplay, we needed someone who understands the classic Sonic series and understands that gameplay format, in order to really execute well on the final product."

"And so we're working together, with Naoto Ohshima-san, who is the creator of Sonic the Hedgehog and was there at Sonic 1, creating and developing the game. We're working with Ooshima-san and his team at Arzest, they're leading development on the title and they're doing a great job of making a brand new classic Sonic game."

Today's Wholesome Direct was a ball pond of fascinating fun

I remember talking to a developer almost twenty years ago about where they thought games were headed, and they told me that one day they imagined a game about an old guy just trying to get across town to help out a sick friend. The drama, the challenge, the mechanics, everything comes out of the situation - being old and worried and on the wrong side of the city.

At the time I was speaking to the developer, they were finishing up work on a console game about aliens and soldiers. The dream of the old guy game seemed pretty distant. And I thought about it today during the 2023 Wholesome Direct, a curated bunch of games from developers who specialise in the cozy, unusual and delightful. Would the old guy game have been at home here? It wouldn't have been hugely out of place.

To put it another way, my favourite game in this Wholesome Direct was probably Toasterball, which cropped up at the end, in a relatively speedy montage of games that came after the main reveals. Toasterball is a game about playing basketball with toasters - your bread pops up and hopefully sends a ball back the way it came. I actually whooped when I saw it. Best of all - I've just discovered that it's already out.

There's confusion over Like A Dragon Gaiden's physical release

Yakuza fans are struggling to find out if there will be physical copies of upcoming spin-off Like A Dragon Gaiden: The Man Who Erased His Name available to buy in the West.

The game's official website confirms there will be a disc-based version in Asia - though only for PlayStation consoles, allowing PS4 copies to be played on PS5 consoles with disc drives. For the game's PC, Xbox One and Xbox Series X/S formats, "no physical edition will be released".

Outside of Asia, the situation is less clear. Local versions of the official website for the UK and USA omit any mention of a physical release, and simply point to digital storefronts for the game on all formats - PC, PlayStation and Xbox.

Cocoon may be the best thing at Summer Games Fest

Right, elevator pitch: you're a nice little bug-person who wordlessly solves environmental puzzles in a mournful, sci-fi atmosphere; there's an earthy-pastel colour palette; there's a soft and pleasingly tactile feel to the world; it's got a nice font; it's made by the lead gameplay designer of Limbo and Inside; and it's published by Annapurna - who probably only got about two-thirds of the way through hearing that pitch before flinging open their wallet.

This sounds a little rote - maybe because the added sense of surprise that comes with these almost aggressively tasteful, prestige-indie darlings has faded a smidge in the face of familiarity, but also maybe because I've likely undersold it. Cocoon is brilliant.

Much of this comes down to atmosphere which, perhaps unsurprisingly given its pedigree, is magic. My demo - hosted at Play Days, Summer Game Fest's small in-person portion for media - began on a rocky terracotta world, scattered with abstract shapes and curious obelisks. The music is synthy and minimalist and so you just pitter-patter around the place, nudging at it. Quickly Cocoon becomes a game about nudging, in fact. You're nudged artfully onto the right path forwards in that very delicate hands-off way these games have now perfected. You nudge the edges of the world as you explore it - what's walkable? What moves? What does this do? And then you start nudging stuff around.

The Access-Ability Summer Showcase was a vital addition to the Summer Game Fest season

Yesterday afternoon saw the broadcast of the inaugural Access-Ability Summer Showcase. Coming it at just under an hour, the showcase focused on new games "made by disabled developers and featuring accessibility settings designed to ensure more disabled gamers are able to play."

As the host, the writer and accessibility consultant Laura Kate Dale, put it, the aim was to ensure that "disabled gamers could be confident that if a game trailer seemed interesting to them they would know up-front if a game was likely to be playable by them or not when it releases.

"Basically," she continued, "I want this to be a space where disabled gamers can get in on the excitement of finding out about new and upcoming videogames with less risk of finding out later that a cool looking game you've seen today isn't something you can play when it actually releases."

Assassin's Creed Mirage throwback visual option pays homage to AC1

Assassin's Creed Mirage sees Ubisoft's historical stabathon series return to its roots with more grounded combat and abilities, a map focused entirely around one city, and a return to the Middle East - where the franchise began.

Now, Ubisoft has revealed a further option that nods all the way back to Assassin's Creed 1 (which, I'm slightly alarmed to acknowledge, is now nearing its 16th birthday).

Where Mirage's colour palette is all golden sunrays and splashes of crimson, the original AC1 had a much bluer filter. To me, it pointed to the fact your historical adventures were all just a simulation - similar to the green palette employed in The Matrix films.

OutRun meets Hockney: discovering Hiroshi Nagai's luminous videogame spaces

It's easy to write about Hiroshi Nagai's paintings when the sun is shining. Nagai is a poet of summers past - the blue-sky days, sure, but also the rosy dusks and those nights where you step outside and the air feels perfectly still. I found out about Nagai while scrolling TikTok recently. His precisely rendered images flashed up before me and I instantly lost the grasp of whatever else I was thinking at the time. Nagai's work took me off to this nostalgic world of peachy sunsets and palms and strange urban beaches. Who is this? Why did this stuff create tingles in the videogame part of my brain? Maybe Nagai simply reminded me of OutRun - OutRun but also Hockney.

Later that day I looked Nagai up and discovered that he did in fact exist outside of TikTok. Born in 1947, Nagai wanted to go to art school, inspired by his father's oil paintings. According to a great piece I read on Tokyo Cowboy, Nagai was unable to get a place on a course and instead worked for a set decorator in Tokyo before his own career took off. Thanks to his prolific creation of album covers, his work eventually became a visual signature for the Japanese City Pop movement of the 1970s and '80s - a movement that blended everything from funk, disco and soft rock to create shimmering cinematic confections with an "urban feel".

Nagai's been haunting me a bit since that first TikTok. I can't stop rewatching it and digging around for his stuff on eBay. I can't stop browsing his prints on places like Etsy. To fully get the Nagai experience, yesterday I took an hour to put on a City Pop playlist and lay back on the sofa just out of the sun, scrolling through his paintings on my phone.

Pokémon Go developer commits to improving game's quality after recent Remote Raid Shiny snafu

11 months 1 week ago

Pokémon Go developer Niantic has said it will act to improve the game's quality levels, after a recent snafu left players spending time and money hunting rare Shiny Pokémon with far lower-than-expected odds.

The bug, which Niantic previously told Eurogamer was an "unfortunate technical error", was eventually fixed by the developer only after fans worked to crowdsource data and diagnose the problem for themselves.

It was the latest in a string of issues which seem to regularly affect the hugely-successful mobile app, with the release of Pokémon and the launch of in-game events frequently marred by some problem or other - particularly in early timezones such as New Zealand and Australia, where it is now a running joke in the game's community that players act as unofficial beta testers.

Blasphemous 2, the sequel to developer The Game Kitchen's gorgeously grim 2019 action-platformer, finally has a release date and is heading to Xbox Series X/S, PlayStation 5, Switch, and PC on 24th August this year.

Storywise, Blasphemous 2 sees the return of pointy hatted protagonist The Penitent One for a journey across a unfamiliar land - a labyrinthine new kingdom ravaged by a curse known as The Miracle and comprised of a "series of enchantingly grotesque landscapes".

Summer Game Fest: Sonic, Sephiroth and zero women

11 months 1 week ago

This week on the Eurogamer Newscast, we react to last night's Summer Game Fest opening livestream, which offered us a first look at new Sonic and Prince of Persia games, plus a mouth-watering glimpse at Final Fantasy 7: Rebirth.

What didn't we see? A little oddly, Square Enix decided not to showcase Final Fantasy 16 - the one which actually goes on sale in a couple of weeks. Cyberpunk 2077 Phantom Liberty was also missing, as was host Geoff Keighley's best pal Hideo Kojima. Once the conference concluded, discussion online focused on the lack of any women on stage, following appearances by a string of male developers - and also Nic Cage.

On the upside, no one unexpectedly walked on stage and got arrested. So, how do we feel about all that, and how would we rate the conference overall? Was it a satisfying alternative to E3? Or are we hoping for more now from Xbox, Ubisoft and Capcom over the coming days? Joining me to discuss all that are Ed Nightingale and Victoria Kennedy.

Q Acoustics M20 HD review: unnaturally flexible bookshelf speakers

11 months 1 week ago

As you'll have seen from some of my recent reviews here, I'm beginning to get into the world of audio in a bigger way than I had been. Of course, headphones are just one part of it, and speakers are another. Here to take a look at today I've got a set of the Q Acoustics M20 HD, a set of £389/$499 bookshelf speakers that are, quite simply, excellent - thanks to top-tier audio for their price category, great connectivity options and a stripped-down feature set that does everything you need without an app to complicate things.

Out of the box, the Q Acoustics M20 HD provide a solid first impression with more classic stylings than most computer speakers we see, with nicely rounded cabinets and minimal controls - just power, volume up and volume down on one speaker. There's also a small LED indicator that glows all manner of different colours depending on what source is being used, be it Bluetooth, optical, analogue or USB. Most of the other useful controls are found on the solid remote supplied with the speakers, which controls media playback, volume, as well as changing audio sources - and there are a lot of audio sources.

Our "happy experience" playing Party Animals

11 months 1 week ago

You may remember a beta for the absurd Party Animals that released back in 2020 - a riotously fun party game that swiftly rose up the most-anticipated lists. Fast forward three years and we finally have a release date, as announced at last night's Summer Games Fest: 20th September, on both PC (Steam) and Xbox consoles.

In that time, the Shanghai-based studio was majorly impacted by lockdown, but the game has gone through extensive development and has been confirmed for release on Xbox via Game Pass.

The developer also apologised for the long wait. "This is our first time developing a game, and we underestimated the time it would take to fix the bugs," said producer and CEO of Recreate Games Zixiong Luo. "Additionally, some necessary approval processes took longer than we planned. We are just as eager as fans to see Party Animals launch, and we want to ensure it's as polished and bug-free as possible first."

Game of the Week: Planet of Lana finds room for vital videogame space

11 months 1 week ago

I dropped into Fortnite late last week - that rare game where you genuinely do drop in - and I had a lovely time as ever. But I had a wistful time too. It felt like something had changed - slowly, slowly and then quickly - and it took me a few days to work out what that might be.

What had happened was I'd appeared in this beautiful, detailed world, where every blade of grass was gorgeously lit and luxuriously curved. And the world itself was filled with distractions. Visit three named areas to get XP? I couldn't help but visit three named areas - everywhere had a name. But not just a name, everywhere also had a gimmick, a bit of storytelling, a possibility to lure me away to do this or that and to lose myself in some new novelty.

This is wonderful, and I would never complain about this. But - to then sort of complain about it - it made me realise that something was missing. To put it another way, I played Fortnite back in the very early days of Battle Royale, and I think some part of me will always be trying to work out whether it was better back then or better now.

Beastieball is a new RPG from Wishes Unlimited, the studio behind the acclaimed Wondersong and Chicory. This time around, the team is turning its attention to something that looks a little like Pokémon, albeit with its combat replaced by a strategic, turn-based take on volleyball. Loads of Beasties are promised, and they can all form friendships that'll create unique combos for use in matches. This one might still be a little way off, though - a Kickstarter crowdfunding campaign launches soon.
