Xbox Live officially rebranded to Xbox network

3 years 1 month ago

UPDATE 23/3/21: In a statement to Eurogamer this morning, Microsoft has explained the recent branding change for its underlying online infrastructure. In short, the new Xbox network phrasing is more "descriptive", the company said, and none of the systems, subscriptions or anything else you actually use were changing.

"Xbox Live isn't going away," Microsoft told Eurogamer. "We are making ongoing adjustments to create a simpler, more descriptive messaging system for Xbox in different areas. None of these experiences or features will change as part of these updates."

ORIGINAL STORY 22/3/21: Microsoft is renaming Xbox Live, its underlying online multiplayer and digital media delivery service, to 'Xbox network', a move it says will help distinguish it from Xbox Live Gold.

Putting EA's claim "you can acquire all items without spending money" in FIFA Ultimate Team to the test

3 years 1 month ago

EA has had a tough month. It's money-printing FIFA series has come under fire from multiple angles, but perhaps most shocking of all is the accusation an EA employee allegedly sold coveted Ultimate Team cards for thousands of pounds.

Unconfirmed direct messages unearthed by the FIFA community appeared to show a company employee selling Icon cards in packages priced €750-1000. In one WhatsApp message, three Prime Icon Moments cards are offered for €1700.

EA's investigation is ongoing, but it has already admitted "one or more EA accounts, which were either compromised or being used inappropriately by someone within EA, directly entitled items to these individual accounts".

After a couple of coronavirus-related wobbles last year, production on the second series of Netflix's The Witcher adaptation is now well underway - and new casting details have confirmed some of the stars set to bring a range of familiar characters to life as the season rolls on.

Perhaps the biggest name to featuring in Netflix's latest casting announcement for The Witcher's Season 2 is Simon Callow, who takes on the role of Codringher, the Dorian detective. He's joined by Silent Witnesses' Liz Carr, who'll be playing business partner Fenn.

Adjoa Andoh (recently seen as Lady Danbury in Netflix's Bridgerton) joins The Witcher as priestess Nenneke, and Cassie Clare (Brave New World) has been cast as Phillippa Eilhart, sorceress and advisor to King Vizimir.

Introducing DF Direct Weekly

3 years 1 month ago

We've been looking to expand Digital Foundry in new directions recently and one of the most fun things we're doing is a weekly show discussing news, shorter stories where we don't have the time or manpower to deliver full-on analysis, plus quick looks at nice hardware that's caught our collective gaze. DF Direct Weekly is also a great opportunity for our Patreon supporters to get more closely involved with the team, while we're starting to open up more about current projects in production and to discuss some of the feedback we've received. It's more laid back and casual than our usual output and for us, it's a fun way to end what is usually a hectic week!

We've been working on refining the show since we debuted a couple of weeks ago, and you can catch the first two episodes here and here. The 'cast' of DF team members involved in the show rotates on a week by week basis, and I'm joined this week by Crysis connoisseur and PC specialist Alex Battaglia along with hardware man and @DealsFoundry mastermind, Will Judd.

This is primarily focussed on quality of life features, introducing the likes of SPECIAL Loadouts, which make it possible to quickly switch between builds. Then there are new CAMP slots, enabling players to build and maintain more than one camp at a time, as well an expansion to Daily Ops, said to nearly double the amount of randomised content currently available. More details on the above, and other quality of life features coming to Fallout 76 in spring can be found on the official website.

As Resident Evil turns 25, its loremaster digs into the first game's many secrets

3 years 1 month ago

Resident Evil is celebrating its 25th birthday. The first game in the Capcom's zombie horror series launched in Japan on the PlayStation on 22nd March, 1996. It is a well-documented work, a game analysed to within an inch of its life over the years in articles and videos and interviews. So, to mark the occasion, we thought we'd do something a bit different: speak to Resident Evil's loremaster to get fresh insight into the Resident Evil that started it all.

"TheBatMan" is perhaps the biggest Resident Evil fan in the world, and we've reported on his work before: a 2700-page long document, a decade in the making, that details the entire mythology of the Resident Evil series.

As I said at the time, it is comprehensive. Totally, utterly comprehensive. It starts millions of years ago, with the genesis of the Plagas from Resident Evil 4, then moves all the way up to the events of Resident Evil 7. This is a canonical summary - as canonical as an unauthorised timeline can be, anyway - of the entire video game series.

Johannes Roberts told IGN that Resident Evil: Welcome to Raccoon City adapts the first two Resident Evil games, and includes the mansion from Resident Evil and the police station from Resident Evil 2. It has nothing to do with the Paul W. S. Anderson-directed movie series.

It sounds like Roberts, who previously directed deep-sea thriller 47 Meters Down, is going for a creepy horror vibe with the movie - he took inspiration from John Carpenter movies Assault on Precinct 13 and The Fog.

Say No! More is the Bartleby-'em-up we all need

3 years 1 month ago

Say No! More understands the modern office as a cheery place where awful things happen. Colleagues steal interns' lunchboxes. People are made to work in unloved corners, beneath ductwork. Everyone wants you to fix the copier or make coffee or just be a bit more entertaining. Into this terrifying world, the game has a very simple solution. No.

Being a prat means that I pretty much have to remind everyone that Say No! More is in good company here. Bartleby, the Scrivener, a short story by Herman Melville, covered this ground in the 19th century. Bartleby works in an office and finds himself increasingly unwilling to do the things asked of him. This approach leads to him losing his job and eventually ending up in jail. Once he's of no use to the industrial flim flam of the day, he pretty much dissolves. Bartleby's classic line, I would prefer not to, is a masterstroke of course. So hard to counter, so nuanced, no easy handholds for someone to grab it and toss it aside. That was the nineteenth century version anyway. Today we get NO! And NO! is accompanied by entertaining violence.

Say No! More is on rails. You race around the office as the story develops, jabbing a button to say NO! at everyone who comes your way. Sometimes it knocks them out of the way. Sometimes it knocks them through a window. Sometimes you need to laugh first to weaken confidence before saying no. Sometimes you need a charged no, or an icy no, or a no accompanied by handclaps. This adds a bit of depth I suppose to a game that doesn't really need depth. Instead it's spectacle - you rush onwards and onwards, shouting down everything that comes your way.

The loss of her father stoked her interest in the family tradition of politics. Lidia showed great qualities in both areas, entering and winning her first karate world championship at 18, and more recently being one of the youngest rising stars in the Polish political arena. The war started by the Mishima Zaibatsu is greatly affecting Poland and she is committed to settle the situation with her own fists.

Samsung's 1TB 860 EVO SSD drops to its lowest price yet

The excellent 1TB Samsung 860 EVO SSD is down to £80 as part of the Amazon Spring Sale.

The 860 EVO has long been one of the best SSDs for gaming - that was until Samsung's very own 870 Evo usurped its spot in Digital Foundry's recommendations for SATA drives.

HBO's adaptation of Naughty Dog's The Last of Us will at times "deviate greatly" from the game, according to executive producer and game creator, Neil Druckmann.

In an interview with IGN, Druckmann confirmed that while some of the dialogue will be lifted directly from the first game, it was more important to secure "the philosophical underpinnings of the story" than worry about details such as "should [a character] wear the same plaid shirt or the same red shirt".

"That's way less important to us than getting the core of who these people are and the core of their journey," he said.

FPS Boost for Skyrim, Fallout 4 and Fallout 76: performance is great - but there is a catch

3 years 1 month ago

We've run the ruler over Microsoft's first wave of FPS Boost titles and came away impressed, while our thoughts for the Arkane-developed duo of Prey and Dishonored Definitive Edition were perhaps even more gushing. Our coverage continues with a look at the Bethesda Games Studio titles running on the Creation Engine and impressions are a little more mixed this time. Skyrim lands exactly where we expected and works beautifully overall, but the Fallout titles are a little more puzzling. Despite a wide gap in their respective graphics capabilities, both Xbox Series S and X consoles run these titles at 1080p in order to achieve 60 frames per second, even though Xbox One X targeted native 4K.

The Fallout titles are somewhat contentious then, but it was great to return to Skyrim at least. In this case we have a true 4K60 and it's great to see that the user mod experience we previously tested at Digital Foundry is now made fully official with FPS Boost - though it's worth stressing these use two different techniques to hit this target. The mod essentially works by removing the 30fps frame-rate cap and disabling v-sync for good measure, allowing Skyrim to tap into the extra horsepower of Series S and X consoles (where back-compat forces v-sync back on).

Australian Classification board says Disco Elysium: The Final Cut is too offensive to go on sale

3 years 1 month ago

Disco Elysium: The Final Cut will not go on sale in Australia after its classification board refused to classify it.

An update on the Australian Classification website states that the game was refused classification because it "depict[s], express[es] or otherwise deal[s] with matters of sex, drug misuse or addiction, crime, cruelty, violence or revolting or abhorrent phenomena in such a way that they offend against the standards of morality, decency and propriety generally accepted by reasonable adults to the extent that they should not be classified" (thanks, Gamasutra).

This means that unless developer ZA/UM - which, as yet, as not publicly responded to the decision - censors or cuts the content committee deems problematic, the game is unable to be legally sold in Australia.

Take the A-Train, or how I fell in love with a hardcore accounting sim

3 years 1 month ago

You've heard of Super Potato, I'm sure, but a couple of blocks down from Tokyo's renowned gaming superstore you'll find what I'm convinced is the real prize of Akihabara. Follow the muffled din of bleeps and clicks down a narrow flight of stairs, and you'll find Beep in all its glory. In the corner's a thrum of rarified machines: a stack of assorted MSX units, while switched on is a pairing of Sharp's MZ-2500 and X68000 plus a pristine FM Towns 2 with matching monitor. Lean in and you can hear the hard drives whir, the monitors hum, their pleasant harmony ringing softly throughout Beep's well-stocked shelves of immaculate, oversized and breathtakingly illustrated game boxes.

1980s Japanese PC gaming has never really been as widely fetishised overseas as its console counterpart, which lent my first trip to Akihabara's Beep a couple of years back the thrill of discovery. It's my first encounter with so many of these games, though even if you're a veteran of the scene you're bound to be surprised by what's in the doujin section, where you'll find self-published efforts from hobbyists, often complete with self-penned covers. For all that, it's a game I had heard of before - albeit dimly - which grabbed my heart.

Nier: Automata is better on Xbox Game Pass PC than on Steam

The PC version of Nier: Automata that launched into Xbox Game Pass this week is a port of the Nier: Automata Become as Gods Edition that launched on Xbox One in 2018 with the DLC thrown in.

This port, handled by developer QLOC, includes a number of enhancements, such as a borderless video setting, FidelityFX options, HDR, and user interface textures upscaled to 4k. The borderless video setting is particularly welcome - it means Nier: Automata runs at the right resolution when it boots. In a post on Facebook, QLOC said these enhancements were made "on special request from PlatinumGames".

The goal of Corpus Proxima & The New Railjack, then, is to remedy these issues, and simplify space combat for new and returning players.

Marvel's Avengers' PlayStation-exclusive Spider-Man content is officially delayed

3 years 1 month ago

Developer Crystal Dynamics has confirmed a delay for Marvel's Avengers' PlayStation-exclusive Spider-Man content, which now won't arrive until this summer at the earliest.

Spider-Man was revealed to be coming to Marvel's Avengers - controversially as a PlayStation-only addition - last August, with Crystal Dynamics announcing an "early 2021" release date for the character. However, questions began to arise earlier this week when the studio revealed a new Marvel's Avengers development roadmap - one in which Spider-Man was notably absent, despite it covering a period through "summer and beyond".

Fans were quick to wonder if the character was the latest casualty of Marvel's Avengers' troubled release - which has so far seen "lower than expected" sales, and delays for the game's initial two post-launch heroes as well as its PS5 and Series X/S update - and Crystal Dynamics' studio head Scot Amos has now moved to address Spider-Man's conspicuous absence.
