John Carmack is Leaving Meta

1 year 4 months ago

John Carmack, the prolific computer programmer and co-founder of id Software, known for his work on classic games such as Wolfenstein 3D and Quake, in addition to his contributions to virtual reality, announced today that he would be stepping down from his role at Meta.

Carmack joined Oculus back in 2013 as CTO before the company was acquired by Meta (then known as Facebook) in 2014. He would then reduce his role at the company just five years later with a new consulting CTO role to focus more on his new startup, Keen Technologies, where he's focusing on artificial general intelligence.

"We have a ridiculous amount of people and resources, but we constantly self-sabotage and squander effort," Carmack said in a FB post detailing the reason for resigning from his position at Meta. "There is no way to sugar coat this; I think our organization is operating at half the effectiveness that would make me happy."

Smash World Tour Players Speak Out After Tournament Cancellation

1 year 4 months ago

All year, professional Super Smash Bros. Melee and Ultimate players have been competing in events across the globe to earn a spot in the Smash World Tour Championships, where the top players were supposed to compete with $250,000 on the line.

But on November 29, a year of buildup and hype came crashing down. The organizers of the Smash World Tour posted an article on Medium saying that the 2022 Smash World Tour Championships and the 2023 Smash World Tour events must be canceled. As professional Smash player Axe tells IGN, this event meant a lot to the Smash community.

"So, the Smash World Tour was almost like the Super Bowl of Smash tournaments," Axe said. "[The finals were] going to happen this upcoming weekend, and a lot of players — including myself — planned on attending specific events throughout the entire year to try to get enough points just to qualify for this one event."

Pro football players don't worry about the Super Bowl getting canceled. Generally, esports players don't have to worry about their events getting scrapped, either. But if you're a pro-Super Smash Bros. player, worrying about event cancellations is basically a job requirement.

"I would say that there is a kind of deep-seated and long-burning fear, I suppose, of Nintendo shutting down events," said Toph, a Smash Bros. commentator and player who's been around for much of the pro Smash community and Nintendo's long history of butting heads.

Where to Get Xbox Series X Before Christmas

1 year 4 months ago

We are in the final push for the holidays, and if you know someone hoping to get an Xbox this year, the good news is, you still have a chance. The less-good news is, your time is running out.

Get an Xbox Before Christmas

Now, shipping and availability is largely dependent on where you're living. However, I live far from civilization and I can get it shipped to my house with time to spare, so I think you might have similar luck. You can also get the Xbox Series S holiday bundle, on sale none the less, and you might even be able to pick that one up at your nearest Walmart.

What's the Difference Between Xbox Series X and Xbox Series S?

If you're a self-professed gamer, you already know, but if you're simply checking around the internet for buying advice, this section's for you. You probably noticed there's a pretty significant price difference between the two consoles. The Series X has more powerful hardware, more built-in storage, and includes a disc drive that can play 4K Blu-ray. The Series S lacks the disc drive and has less-powerful hardware. However, both machines play the same games (as long as they're downloaded of course), both systems work with Microsoft's Game Pass system, and both use the same accessories like controllers.

The biggest difference between the Xbox Series X and Series S is the resolution. The Xbox Series X is capable of 4K graphics, while the Series S tops out at 1440p, or "2K" as some call it. Depending on the size of your screen, this probably won't even be noticeable.

Dead Space: How a Single Scene Was Created - IGN First

1 year 4 months ago

The Dead Space remake is a faithful recreation of the 2008 sci-fi horror classic. Well, mostly faithful. EA Motive has seized the opportunity to improve on the original, and so some sequences play out differently than you remember. An early example is the moment in which protagonist Isaac Clarke watches a corpse transform into a necromorph for the first time.

To find out how the new version of this sequence was created, we spoke to several members of the Dead Space team to explore their roles in bringing the moment to life. As with every individual moment in every video game, the final result is the product of people working together. This IGN First video reveals how multiple people across several different departments combined their skills to create one of the game's most horrifying sequences.

For more from Dead Space, check out how the story has been re-written for the remake, how the weapons have been redesigned, and a comparison between the graphics of the original game and the remake.

Blizzard has announced that Chris Metzen, a veteran Warcraft, StarCraft, and Diablo designer, has returned to the company as a creative advisor after several years away.

In a post on the World of Warcraft website, Warcraft general manager John Hight said “It is with great joy that I announce Chris Metzen has joined the Warcraft Leadership Team as Creative Advisor. 1 year 4 months ago

Metal Gear Solid creator Hideo Kojima has shared a new poster for Death Stranding 2 and a special thank you message to celebrate Kojima Productions' 7th anniversary.

Shared on the studio's Twitter page (below), the celebrations kicked off with a tour of Kojima Productions' fancy new offices in Tokyo before Kojima himself appeared to tease a little more about his upcoming projects.

The Death Stranding 2 poster was shared later, and appears to show some sort of octopus locked in a containment pod. Credits to the game's cast also feature, including names such as Norman Reedus, Elle Fanning, and Troy Baker.

"Kojima Productions is celebrating its 7th anniversary," said Kojima in the clip. "I would like to thank everyone for their continued support.

"Have you had a chance to check out our latest title, [Death Stranding 2], which we revealed at [The Game Awards]? I promise to give you even more amazement and overall gaming experience than the first one. We hope you'll be excited about it.

High on Life Review

1 year 4 months ago

They say that tragedy + time = comedy, but in gaming the real tragedy is the amount of time we have to wait between quality comedy games. Thankfully, in the opening moments of High on Life, as my talking gun belittlingly whispered to me that I was doing a great job as I shot dancing aliens in the face, I got the feeling I’d struck gold. While it has bugs and performance hitches and occasionally frolics in unimpressive toilet humor, it largely succeeds at being the type of absurd space satire I’ve always wanted. Whether I was chatting with my shotgun about the merits of science and formulas, covering myself in alien poop to sneak into a secure facility, or inexplicably watching a full live-action movie from the ‘90s on nearby television, High on Life is a game that just knows how to have a good time, and there really aren’t enough of those.

Death Stranding Movie in the Works From Kojima Productions and Barbarian's Hammerstone Studios

1 year 4 months ago

Hideo Kojima's Kojima Productions has partnered with Barbarian executive producer Alex Lebovici's Hammerstone Studios to develop and produce a movie based on Death Stranding.

As reported by Deadline, the film is being fully financed by Hammerstone Studios and Kojima and Lebovici will serve as producers on the project. Kojima Productions US and Allan Ungar will take on the role of executive producers.

No further official details were given for the Death Stranding film, but Deadline has said it will "introduce new elements and characters within the Death Stranding universe." There is also no word as to who will direct and write the movie, but Deadline understands it's "now on the fast track, with development underway."

In 2021, Kojima Productions opened a division to release movies, TV, and music, and its plan looks to be starting to take shape.

“I couldn’t be more excited about this new partnership with Hammerstone Studios,” said Kojima. “This is a pivotal moment for the franchise and I’m really looking forward to collaborating with them in bringing DEATH STRANDING to the big screen.”

Marvel's Spider-Man 2 Arrives in Fall 2023

1 year 4 months ago

Insomniac Games has announced that Marvel's Spider-Man 2 will launch on PlayStation 5 in fall 2023.

Revealed in a PlayStation Blog post, the long-awaited sequel to 2018's Spider-Man will seemingly stick to the promised 2023 release year.

"What a year it’s been for PlayStation Studios," said Insomniac's creative director Bryan Intihar. "Here at Insomniac Games we’ve been in absolute awe of the work of our peers. Congrats to everyone on a successful 2022, and here’s to next year being just as exciting as we continue to get Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 ready for release next fall."

The developer reassured fans of the release window in October but, as delays are quite common in the video game industry, many were concerned that the sequel would slip into 2024.

Spider-Man 2 was announced by Sony as a PS5 exclusive in September 2021, promising a continuation of Peter Parker and Miles Morales' story as they face a new (but familiar) foe in Venom. The villain's voice actor promised that the "game is massive" and Marvel Entertainment's creative vice president Bill Rosemann commented at the same time that Spider-Man 2 will be "a little darker" than the two previous entries.

The Witcher 3 Next-Gen Includes a Wild Easter Egg Relating to Cyberpunk 2077's Biggest Mystery

1 year 4 months ago

The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt's next-gen update includes a bizarre Easter Egg relating to Cyberpunk 2077's biggest mystery.

YouTuber xLetalis, who has discovered just about every other Easter Egg and secret hidden within The Witcher 3, posted a new video that outlines how to uncover the mystery and how it relates to a Cyberpunk 2077 secret that still has players scrambled more than two years after the game launched.

The mystery - known as FF:06:B5 - revolves around a complicated set of numbers that appear within Cyberpunk's Night City. This particular number kicks things off as it's found on a statue worshipped by monks, and later connects to a handful of other numbers hidden throughout the city.

Amazon to Support and Publish New Tomb Raider With Crystal Dynamics

1 year 4 months ago

Amazon Games has signed a deal with Crystal Dynamics to support the development of and publish the next mainline Tomb Raider game being made in Unreal Engine 5.

The companies announced the partnership today, December 15, saying they "have reached an agreement under which Crystal Dynamics will develop a new multiplatform Tomb Raider title, with Amazon Games providing full support and publishing the game globally."

The game in question is the next-gen Tomb Raider that was announced in April 2022. Crystal Dynamics, which was purchased by Embracer Group in August, noted that the acquisition has allowed for more unconventional publishing agreements such as the deal with Amazon.

"Crystal Dynamics has an extraordinary opportunity following our acquisition by Embracer to redefine what a publishing relationship is for Tomb Raider," said head of Crystal Dynamics Scot Amos.

"Transformative is what we’re looking for, and with Amazon Games, we found a team that shares our creative vision, ambitions, and values for a Lara Croft universe across the spectrum of possibilities. They’re uniquely positioned to rewrite what publishing and development collaborations are, and we’re eager to forge this new path together, starting with building the biggest and best Tomb Raider game yet."

Resident Evil Village’s VR Mode Launches February 22 as Free DLC

Resident Evil Village's virtual reality mode will arrive as free DLC on February 22, the same day as the PlayStation VR2 launches.

Anyone that owns the original version of Resident Evil Village on PlayStation 5 will therefore be able to download and play the update for free if they also own the PS VR2.

The VR mode was first announced in June and will support the entire campaign of Resident Evil Village. "A deeper and more captivating adventure awaits with PlayStation VR2, as Ethan Winters’ journey takes full advantage of the headset’s advanced features," reads Capcom's official synopsis.

"VR Mode utilizes the 4K HDR display, eye tracking, and 3D audio to make Resident Evil Village more realistic and intense than ever.

"Soak in the village’s richly detailed atmosphere in virtual reality, including the ornate chambers of Castle Dimitrescu, and prepare to feel truly dwarfed by the larger-than-life characters and creatures that lurk within."

In our preview of the game, IGN said: "Even as a game that’s well over a year old now, Resident Evil Village does what it needs to do to sell players on the capabilities of the PS VR2. It’s also an exciting moment for Resident Evil Village fans, who get to see their favourite series return to an area in which it excels."

Soccer Story Review - A Game Of Two Halves

1 year 4 months ago

Soccer Story

Reviewed on: Xbox Series X/S
Platform: PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X/S, PlayStation 4, Xbox One, Switch, PC
Publisher: No More Robots
Developer: PanicBarn
Release:

Soccer Story is a charming role-playing adventure that seamlessly builds a joyous and often goofy story around something as simple as kicking a ball. A cataclysmic event causes soccer to be banned unless sanctioned by the evil Soccer Inc. (with more than a few parallels to real-world FIFA), and our young hero’s father goes missing during the catastrophe. A year later, a magical soccer ball comes crashing into our hero’s life. What comes next is an often silly and fun story about bringing soccer back to the world, filled with anthropomorphic panda goalkeepers and an evil soccer corporation.

Players first set out to Soccertown to put the magical ball to use. The town is a shell of itself. The stadium is locked up, graffiti goals are sprayed around town in an act of rebellion, and evil Soccer Inc. referees are constantly monitoring for illicit five-a-sides. Existing in this soccer-mad world is delightful, thanks in large part to its absurdity.

Marvel's Spider-Man 2 Gets Fall 2023 Release Window

1 year 4 months ago

marvel's spider-man 2 insomniac games fall 2023 release window

PlayStation has revealed that Marvel's Spider-Man 2 will hit PlayStation 5 sometime next fall.

This news comes after leaks from earlier this week indicating the game would be hitting the console in the fall of 2023. It seems those leaks were correct. While we do have this fall 2023 release window, PlayStation did not reveal a release date.

"What a year it's been for PlayStation Studios; here at Insomniac Games we've been in absolute awe of the work of our peers," Insomniac Games creative director Bryan Intihar writes in a PlayStation Blog post. "Congrats to everyone on a successful 2022... and here's to next year being just as exciting as we continue to get Marvel's Spider-Man 2 ready for release next fall."

Not much else was revealed about this upcoming sequel, but PlayStation says, "Following the events of Marvel's Spider-Man and Marvel's Spider-Man: Miles Morales, the Spider-duo of Peter Parker and Miles Morales are back in the next blockbuster action chapter of the Marvel's Spider-Man series."

They did so during the State of Unreal 2022 presentation, revealing that this Tomb Raider sequel – the fourth in this rebooted series – will be built on Unreal Engine 5. Now, Crystal Dynamics has announced that Amazon Games will publish this sequel.

"Amazon Games and Crystal Dynamics today announced they have reached an agreement under which Crystal Dynamics will develop a new multiplatform Tomb Raider title, with Amazon Games providing full support and publishing the game globally," a press release reads. "The as-yet-untitled new Tomb Raider is a single-player, narrative-driven adventure that continues Lara Croft's story in the Tomb Raider series.

See What Went Into Making Cuphead's Physical Edition Trailer

1 year 4 months ago

Cuphead Physical Edition

Two months ago, Studio MDHR announced a physical retail edition of its smash hit Cuphead. The charming trailer features physical puppets of Cuphead and his friends out on the high seas, searching for sunken treasure. What they find is news of a physical and collector's edition of Cuphead. The cute trailer runs at just around a minute long, but the set and puppet designs are intricate, making you wonder just how much work went into creating the trailer.

Today, the studio released a behind-the-scenes look at how its retail partner iam8bit created the sets and puppets of that trailer. You can get a look at the team building and shooting it in the video below.

"A physical edition of Cuphead is something we've been excited about for a very long time," Studio MDHR director Maja Moldenhauer said in a press release. "A big part of the nostalgia that fueled the design of Cuphead centers around the wonderful, tactile experience of getting that game you love off the shelf, opening the case, and diving into a new challenge or grand adventure. There's nothing quite like it, and we couldn't be more thrilled with the teams at iam8bit and Skybound for helping us bring Cuphead into players' hands with the same meticulous care and craftsmanship that underpins how we made the game itself. In a year full of so much excitement here at Studio MDHR, I truly can't think of a better way to round things out than with this release."

The VR mode isn't just a slice of Village; you can play through the entire campaign in this new (probably horrifying) way. And you can do so the day you bring home your PSVR2 system.

"A deeper and more captivating adventure awaits with PlayStation VR2, as Ethan Winters' journey takes full advantage of the headset's advanced features," a press release reads. "VR Mode utilizes the 4K HDR display, eye tracking, and 3D audio to make Resident Evil Village more realistic and intense than ever."

Capcom says the platform's PSVR2 Sense controllers will add even more immersion to the new mode.

"These [controllers] represent Ethan's famously resilient hands and allow intuitive actions to be performed in-game," Capcom writes in a press release. "Players can hold up their arms to guard against enemies that get too close for comfort. Weapons all feel tangibly more realistic in VR Mode with new gameplay elements that dial up the immersion, such as dual wielding and natural motion controls for reloading firearms and brandishing knives."

In this special travel vlog, Game Informer's Alex Van Aken and Brian Shea tour Super Nintendo World while visiting Osaka, Japan. The pair show off everything the park offers, including Peach's Castle, Bowser's Castle, Toad's Cafe, Yoshi's Adventure, and a final battle against Bowser Junior. Universal Studios' rendition of the Mushroom Kingdom is magical and easily the best theme park we've experienced.

Earlier this morning, Nintendo announced that the first Super Nintendo World U.S. location is opening in February 2023.

If you enjoyed this video, watch our other travel vlogs, including our recent trips to the Persona 25th Anniversary Café in Los Angeles and the Pokémon World Championships in London. Special thanks to freelance video producers Nick Lawler and Shawn Thomas for editing this vlog.

God Of War Series Ordered At Amazon Prime Video, Cory Barlog Will Executive Produce

1 year 4 months ago

God of War Amazon Prime Video Cory Barlog announced

PlayStation revealed earlier this year that it was developing new TV shows based on Gran Turismo, Horizon, and God of War. At the time, PlayStation Productions said the Horizon series was happening at Netflix (read some details about that here) and the God of War series was being handled by Amazon. That was it, though.

Now, we know a little bit more about this God of War series, courtesy of Amazon Prime Video, as reported by Deadline. Amazon Prime Video has officially given a series order to God of War and as the name suggests, it will be based on the hit PlayStation franchise (which just received a sequel last month). More specifically, it will take place during the Norse era of Kratos' adventures, seemingly bypassing his more gruesome and violent Greek history. God of War (2018) director Cory Barlog will executive produce Prime Video's series.

Justin Roiland Almost Didn’t Voice The Main Gun In High On Life

1 year 4 months ago

High on Life key art

High on Life, a game where you use talking guns to stop humans from being sold as drugs, is the newest title from Squanch Games, a development studio founded by Rick and Morty co-creator Justin Roiland, When I played their last game, Trover Saves the Universe, a few years ago, I was surprised by how naturally Roiland’s brand of improvised dialogue translated to video game form. Characters would ramble on as long as you stuck around to listen, and I would find myself standing in certain spots for upwards of five or six minutes, just listening to Roiland (who voiced many characters, Trover included) riff on one joke over and over again. While High on Life and Trover are two very different games, Roiland’s style of comedy is featured heavily in both. When I got a chance to talk to Roiland (and design director Erich Meyr), I was surprised to learn he originally wanted this game to have a different direction.

“I didn’t really want to do the main gun,” Roiland says. “I was trying to get out of it. But the team was like, ‘no, you have to do it.’”

Meyr interjects and echoes the team, “It’s kind of our signature at this point.”

Roiland ultimately agreed to it because the team pushed so hard. “I have to be wrong if everyone else is saying that,” he continues. “So I was like, alright, I'll do it. And I knew that it would be helpful from a production standpoint for me to do it.”

Hogwarts Legacy Delayed On Switch And Last-Gen Consoles

1 year 4 months ago

The Switch and last-gen versions of Hogwarts Legacy have been delayed. The game is still slated to release on February 10 for PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X/S, and PC. However, everyone else will have to wait a few more months.

The open-world Wizarding World adventure now has two additional release dates. The PlayStation 4 and Xbox One versions launch on April 4. The Switch port comes a few months later, on July 25. Developer Avalanche says it decided to stagger the release to ensure the best possible experience on each platform.

Additionally, a game FAQ about the change in dates clarifies that the PS4/XB1 Deluxe Editions will not include the 72-hour early access that the current-gen and PC bundle is receiving.

Platinum Games' Hideki Kamiya 'Can't Conceive' The Bayonetta Series Ending

1 year 4 months ago

Bayonetta 3 hideki kamiya multiple sequels

Platinum Games vice president Hideki Kamiya doesn't see the Bayonetta series ever ending.

He told IGN Japan this during a new interview, which touches on the creator's post-Bayonetta 3 thoughts, possible spin-off games, and a brand new game with the codename Project G.G. When asked if there's a chance players get a Bayonetta 4 or even a Bayonetta 5, Kamiya said he wants to make both of those games.

"I personally can't conceive the Bayonetta series ever ending," Kamiya told IGN Japan. "I want to make a Bayonetta 4 and Bayonetta 5, and I intend on pitching them to the company."

Kamiya goes further, revealing that the team often talks "internally about how we could make nine of them." He also said he wants people to believe him when he says, "I'm not going to do anything that will betray the players."

Need For Speed Unbound Review - Turning A Tight Corner

1 year 4 months ago

Need For Speed Unbound

Reviewed on: Xbox Series X/S
Platform: PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X/S, PC
Publisher: Electronic Arts
Developer: Criterion Games
Release:
Rating: Teen

Since its inception nearly three decades ago, Need for Speed’s best entries have combined style and substance to produce thrilling homages to the street racing scene. Need for Speed Unbound feels like the ultimate realization of that philosophy, creating one of the franchise’s best in years.

Sliding into the driver seat of the nearly 150 cars in Need for Speed Unbound feels terrific. Blasting down a straightaway in a McLaren delivers a remarkable sense of speed but nailing a corner drift in a Mitsubishi feels just as good. Actions like drifting and drafting fill your boost gauge, creating a satisfying rhythm in the moment-to-moment racing as you flow from one move to the next.
