Late yesterday, Netflix dropped a fresh look at its upcoming horror anthology series. Dubbed Guillermo del Toro’s Cabinet of Curiosities, the eight-episode show will be helmed by a host of different directors who will have creative control and “ownership” over each of their respective projects. Much like other anthology series like Black Mirror, for instance, each episode will have its own self-contained story.
The spine-chilling series will debut on the popular streaming service this October as a special four-day Halloween event. Specifically, the horror show will kick off on Oct. 25 through to Oct. 28, with each day ushering in a double-episode for fans to get their blood-drenched teeth into. As you can see in the footage above, the titles of all eight episodes were revealed, along with each project’s specific director:
- The Autopsy – Directed by David Prior
- The Outside – Directed by Ana Lily Amirpour
- The Viewing – Directed by Panos Cosmatos
- Dreams in the Witch House – Directed by Catherine Hardwicke
- Lot 36 – Directed by Guillermo Navarro
- Pickman’s Model – Directed by Keith Thomas
- Graveyard Rats – Directed by Vincenzo Natali
- The Murmuring – Directed by Jennifer Kent
Guillermo del Toro goes on to explain that, “Cabinet of Curiosities is a show that I’ve always wanted to make,” and that “We wanted to create beautiful, practical creatures with all the artistry that goes into creating a great monster.” Clearly, CGI-based effects are going to be taking a backseat, then, as it sounds like the show will lean heavily into practical visual effects. Sounds super promising, right?
Of the list of directors on the docket, Vincenzo Natali and Jennifer Kent are arguably the most high profile. Natali wrote and directed 1997’s cult hit Cube, 2009’s sci-fi horror pic Splice, and 2019’s Stephen King adaptation In The Tall Grass. Meanwhile, Kent wrote and directed 2014’s critical darling The Babadook.
