Earlier today, head of Xbox, Phil Spencer, went to the Xbox Wire to release a blog post all about Microsoft’s upcoming next-gen console, the Xbox Series X. The post unveiled some new technical information on the system and some updates on how backwards compatibility will work.

A new feature called “Smart Delivery” will ensure that once you buy a new Xbox Game, that game will be the correct version of whatever Xbox system you play it on. This tech will be available for all developers and publishers and they can choose to use for their titles and one developer has already come out to announce that its game will use this new feature.

After Xbox tweeted about the next generation of compatibility, the Twitter account for CD Projekt Red’s upcoming open-world RPG, Cyberpunk 2077, tweeted out a statement to tell fans not to worry about having to purchase two versions of the same game:

“Gamers should never be forced to purchase the same game twice or pay for upgrades. Owners of #Cyberpunk2077 for Xbox One will receive the Xbox Series X upgrade for free when available.”

Microsoft has been pushing backwards compatibility for the Xbox ecosystem in recent years but it is unclear whether or not Sony will follow suit with the PS5 when it comes to letting users upgrade to next-gen versions of current-gen titles for free. Will The Last of Us Part II or Ghost of Tsushima have a free update for early adopters? We’ll just have to wait and see.

After the recent announcement of a delay from CD Projekt Red, Cyberpunk 2077 is now slated to release in September for Xbox One, PS4, PC, and Google Stadia.
