EA Comments on Star Wars After Reveal of Ubisoft Open-World Game: “We’re Making More Star Wars Games”

3 years 4 months ago

Today it was confirmed that Ubisoft is working on a new open-world game set in the Star Wars game universe. If you’re wondering how that can be possible, it’s because the ten year exclusive partnership between EA and Disney/LucasArts for Star Wars games is coming to a close.

EA, clearly not oblivious to the discussion surrounding this transition, made a comment today on Twitter stressing that they are still fans of Star Wars and that just because the exclusivity has ended, it doesn’t mean they are done with the franchise.

EA has had an up and down history with the IP while it was exclusive to their studios.

The low points were without a doubt the cancellation of the promising-looking Star Wars 1313 and the loot box controversy that soured the launch of Star Wars Battlefront 2.

Looking back positively though, fans did get the excellent Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order from respawn and more recently Star Wars Squadrons, which is among the best VR games released in recent memory.

If this transition means that we can still get the content that EA was successful with, and now also get more Star Wars games from other, talented, non-EA based studios, this will all probably end up being a net win for everyone involved.

Speaking of LucasArts, ICYMI yesterday a new Indiana Jones game developed by Bethesda’s MachineGames studio was announced. If you’re interested check out the trailer and a few secrets we may have found and features we’re hoping make it to the game.
