Today Capcom announced its financial results for the first quarter of the fiscal year 2020, which is related to the period between April 1 and June 30, 2020.

Below you can see the results for the whole company, which set a record for a first quarter of the fiscal year in both net sales and profit.

Net sales were up 32.2% year-on-year while operating income climbed 39.1% year-on-year.

While overall results soared, the results of the Digital Contents business (which is the company’s console, mobile, and PC business) were even more impressive.

Net sales were 21,476 million yen and operating income was 11,804 yen, up 53.7% and 52.6% respectively.

We learn that Resident Evil 3 enjoyed “solid” sales, while another driver for profit were catalog sales of older games like Monster Hunter World: Iceborne and Resident Evil 2.

“In this business segment, the Resident Evil series, whose cumulative sales have exceeded 100 million units, saw new title Resident Evil 3 (for PlayStation 4, Xbox One and PC) deliver solid sales. Additionally, high-margin catalog sales continued to contribute to expansion of the user base while driving profitability growth; this included the continued growth in sales for titles such as Monster Hunter World: Iceborne (for PlayStation 4, Xbox One and PC), released in the fiscal year ended March 2020, and Resident Evil 2 (for PlayStation 4, Xbox One and PC), released in the fiscal year ended March 2019.”

On the other hand, all other business segments were negatively impacted by the closure of arcades and amusement parks due to COVID-19, leaving gaming as the only positive factor in Capcom’s slate.

While the gaming business was certainly influenced positively by the pandemic, Capcom has already been delivering record results and showing considerable growth prior to its impact, as you can see by the announcement for the previous quarter.
