State of Play Announced Featuring More Than 20 Minutes of Final Fantasy 16 Gameplay

1 year 2 months ago

Sony has announced a brand-new State of Play featuring 20 minutes of gameplay for Final Fantasy XVI. It will take place Thursday at 2pm PT / 5pm ET.

Sony didn't elaborate on what will be shown during the showcase, but it will presumably include new areas and mechanics. It's also unclear whether this State of Play will feature other announcements beyond this showcase.

Sony's most recent State of Play was back in February, with Suicide Squad: Kill the Justice League being the central attraction.

A major push for Final Fantasy

Square Enix is in the midst of a major rollout for Final Fantasy XVI, which is currently exclusive to the PlayStation 5. We had a chance to check it out just recently, and we were impressed by what we saw, with Matt Purslow writing that "if story, exploration, and characters live up to what I’ve seen of the combat so far, then Final Fantasy 16 will be a JRPG worth being excited about."

Final Fantasy XVI was first announced back in 2020. It will star a hero named Clive, who must navigate a world of political intrigue and massive monsters called Eikons. It will differ from other Final Fantasy games in that it won't be turn-based, instead featuring an action system more akin to Devil May Cry.

Final Fantasy XVI is slated to released June 22 on PlayStation 5. You can watch the stream right here on IGN when it goes live on Thursday.
