Spider-Man 2 Director Explains What Happened to the 'Undies' Suit and Other Missing Costumes

We all know what everyone's favorite part of being Spider-Man is, right? Not the thrilling web-slinging, or the hanging from buildings, or the monstrous symbiote powers. It's dressing up in cool Spidey suits. But unfortunately, some of the suits from the original Marvel's Spider-Man are missing in Spider-Man 2. And IGN has the opportunity to learn exactly why.

We spoke to Insomniac senior creative director Bryan Intihar on a spoilercast episode of Beyond to learn more about the suit situation. While the podcast itself was a spoiler-cast, never fear - this article only talks about suit availability, so you can read on safely knowing we've kept all story spoilers quiet on this page. Just don't listen to the podcast itself until you're ready for it all to be laid bare.

First off, Intihar explains, moving suits from Spider-Man 1 to Spider-Man 2 isn't as simple as just pushing a button and making them magically appear. "A lot of those are PS4, and then even the ones that showed up in the remaster, they have to be basically PS5-sized or whatever," he says. "They have to be upgraded. So there's a work factor to get it in there."

What's more, he continues, the web wings and capes present in Spider-Man 2 made things wonky with some of the suit designs, and would have required a lot more work to make every single suit function on a basic level with the game's mechanics, look, and feel.

"So it was just picking and choosing," Intihar continues. "We had our favorites. We had things that we wanted to introduce, new things we wanted to do, and it's a little bit of "Here are our favorites, here are what we know the fans might like.' I knew from day one, every movie suit that they want is going to be in there. It's got to be in there...Then, also, the other thing was it was really important to me that Miles and Pete had the same number of suits."

We then proceed to ask Intihar what happened to "Underpants Pete," aka the Spider-Man 1 "Undies" suit that had Peter Parker running around in just his boxers.

Intihar initially jokes that Peter was just "a little shy," but then admitted he didn't really know why the team hadn't chosen the Undies look to make it into Spider-Man 2. But he implies that maybe it just wasn't exciting to the teams working on the different suits.

"The other thing is we talked a lot to the character team," he says. "What are the character team excited about making? They put so much time and effort into those suits. I want them to wake up every morning and go, 'I'm excited to work on this character. I'm excited to work on this suit.' So we leaned on them as well, because a lot of them are hardcore comic-book fans, and they have their suits."

We chatted with Intihar about absolutely everything Spider-Man 2, including an unused idea for a Venomized Sandman, why Mary Jane's stealth missions are back, and more. You can watch and listen to the full spoilercast right here, but if you're not ready for spoilers just yet, how about more suits? We've got a comprehensive guide to the origins of every unlockable costume, and a guide on how to unlock all those outfits in the first place. Happy hunting!
