Disney Illusion Island Materializes This Summer

1 year 3 months ago

For the classical Disney geeks yearning for some good old fashioned Mickey Mouse nonsense, today's Nintendo Direct gave us a new look at the upcoming four-player co-op platformer, Disney Illusion Island. And it came along with a release date of July 28, 2023.

Disney Illusion Island was first shown off in September of last year at D23, where we got a look at co-op play with Mickey, Minnie, Donald, and Goofy. This new trailer shows a bit more of each character's unique animations and powers, and we see them jumping, swinging, swimming, and exploring the mysterious island as a group. There's even a cute moment where Mickey and Minnie share an adorable hug, and we see Goofy performing silly aerial feats on a giant squirting mustard bottle.

Overall, the gameplay looks a bit like Ori and the Blind Forest but with up to four characters (you can play solo or in smaller groups, too). There are various NPCs scattered around to meet, as well as boss battles that appear to take advantage of the platforming mechanics for some potentially interesting challenges.

Disney Illusion Island is up for pre-orders today and for now is planned exclusively for Nintendo Switch. Last year, we learned that it was born from the ashes of a deal worth $3.5 million between developer Dlala and Disney for a different IP entirely. When Disney exited games publishing in 2016, that game died with it, but "a lot of the foundational elements" have made a comeback in Disney Illusion Island now that Dlala is back in the driver's seat.
