Destiny 2's New Player Experience Sucks Right Now, Thanks To Its Story

3 years 3 months ago

"Okay, so that's the Crow, and he's the guy who killed Cayde-6, and it's a really big deal that he's back and that we're working with him--because we murdered him," I explained, somewhat breathless, over the Discord voice chat filled with four of my oldest friends. "You really should play Forsaken before this."

Nobody said anything for a few long moments as I thought about what other story elements of Destiny 2 might be relevant to the mission we were about to run. As I thought about it, two things dawned on me. First, that anything I could tell them about Destiny would be relevant because their introduction to the story and the world was so thin. Second, that they probably didn't care.

When Bungie released Beyond Light, the latest expansion to Destiny 2, it added new content to the game while removing a whole lot of old content. Several major in-game destinations were "vaulted," ostensibly because Destiny 2's install size was getting too big and because those areas of the game were getting too little attention, both from the developers and from players. But because of that, tons of old missions are now gone from Destiny 2--like the vanilla campaign that introduces you to the world and its characters.

New Tesla Model S Runs Games As Well As The PS5 And Xbox Series X

3 years 3 months ago

Tesla has revealed a refresh to its Model S electric sports car that features an on-board GPU that rivals both the Xbox Series X and PlayStation 5.

The Models S is getting the first refresh the line has seen since its inception in 2012, which mostly includes improvements to things you'd expect to find in a car: updated interior and exterior designs, a better powertrain, and greater mileage. What is both very new and very out of place is the Tesla Arcade, which now features 10 teraflops of processing performance for gaming.

Games have been included with Tesla models in the past, most notably Cuphead, but this is in another ballpark. The promotional images show off a carousel that features games like The Witcher 3, Stardew Valley, and more. Tesla founder Elon Musk also tweeted saying that the new Model S will support Cyberpunk 2077. CD Projekt Red also benefitted from Musk's tweets recently, seeing a massive share price hike.

Additionally, the game is marked down by 40% through February 15, while you can save even more if you buy the base game and the Hot Garbage DLC bundle. The game has a landing page on Steam but it doesn't appear to have gone live just yet for sale--that should happen soon.

Capcom Hits New Record High For Profit And Reveals Best-Selling Franchises

3 years 3 months ago

Japanese game publisher Capcom is doing exceptionally well right now in terms of its business. The company has announced its highest-ever profit thanks in part to the firm's continued push into the digital market and sales of Monster Hunter World and Resident Evil 3.

Thanks to another strong period, Monster Hunter World: Iceborn has now sold more than 7.2 million units worldwide, while Resident Evil 3 has hit 3.6 million copies sold. The total number of games sold by Capcom during the financial year has reached 19.8 million, and 16.2 million of them were digital sales. This is good news for Capcom, as the company makes more money on digital games than physical titles.

Overall, Capcom pulled in revenue of 64.8 billion yen and made a profit of 17.5 billion yen, which is a record for the company over its 41-year history. All of these numbers pertain to the nine-month period ended on December 31, 2020.

WallStreetBets Subreddit At Heart Of GameStop Stock Spike Back Up After Going Private

3 years 3 months ago

After briefly going private, subreddit r/wallstreetbets is back up. Moderator user zjz posted a response to why the subreddit was briefly taken private alongside the account's Discord server being banned.

"We wrote software to do most of the moderation for us but that software isn't allowed to read the Reddit new feed fast enough and submit responses, and the admins haven't given us special access despite asking for it," zjz writes. "We're suffering from success and our Discord was the first casualty. You know as well as I do that if you gather 250k people in one spot someone is going to say something that makes you look bad."

They continue: "We blocked all bad words with a bot, which should be enough, but apparently if someone can say a bad word with weird unicode icelandic characters and someone can screenshot it you don't get to hang out with your friends anymore. Discord did us dirty and I am not impressed with them destroying our community instead of stepping in with the wrench we may have needed to fix things, especially after we got over 1,000 server boosts. That is pretty unethical."

Mario Is Coming To Animal Crossing: New Horizons, But What Will The March Update Include?

3 years 3 months ago

Nintendo is following Animal Crossing: New Horizons' January update with another free content update in March. The company has shared very few details about that patch as of yet, other than confirming it will introduce some Mario content to the game, but here's what we can generally expect.

Although Nintendo hasn't shared much information about Animal Crossing's March update, the company had previously announced that a line of Mario-themed furniture will be added to the game that month. We don't know exactly how many pieces of furniture will be added or just what they'll look like, but Mario items have been a staple of the Animal Crossing series since the beginning. Previous entries have featured wallpaper and flooring inspired by the original Super Mario Bros., as well as furniture based on the Super Mushroom, Super Star, fire bar, and other iconic Mario items. There were also Mario clothing and accessories, including the plumber's signature cap and mustache.

CD Projekt Red Bans Cyberpunk 2077 Keanu Reeves Sex Mod

3 years 3 months ago

A mod that allowed players to sort of have sex with Keanu Reeves' character Johnny Silverhand in Cyberpunk 2077 has already been disabled by CD Projekt Red.

The mod, created by modder Catmino and hosted on Nexus mods, allowed players to swap skin textures onto different models in the game. By swapping Johnny Silverhand's skin texture onto one of the robot sex workers (joytoys) around Night City, players could have sex with what looked like Silverhand. Swapping textures would do nothing for the robots' voices, and they remained clothed, so the mod wasn't exactly a great replica, but it garnered enough attention to be reported on by Eurogamer earlier today. Soon after that post was published, the mod was removed from Nexus.

In a statement to PC Gamer on why the mod was removed, CD Projekt Red said: "Our most important rule regarding user-generated content, game mods in particular, is that it can't be harmful towards others. In the case of model swaps, especially those that involve explicit situations, it can be perceived as such by the people who lent us their appearance for the purpose of creating characters in Cyberpunk 2077." Basically, they don't want modders putting Keanu into NSFW situations he didn't sign on for.

Guitar Hero Oral History Reveals Devs Thought The Guitar Controller Was Stupid

3 years 3 months ago

The original Guitar Hero team reportedly thought the guitar controller was a "stupid" idea. We gained this and other insights from Vice's report on the game's history.

RedOctane and Harmonix were the dynamic duo responsible for Guitar Hero. RedOctane started as a video game rental service in the vein of GameFly, but made the pivot to manufacturing peripherals, specifically DDR dance mats, after the dot com bubble burst. Harmonix was the brainchild of two MIT grads who wanted to create ways for anyone to make music, regardless of their talent or ability. The two companies came together to merge RedOctane's peripheral manufacturing experience and capabilities with Harmonix's game development skills to create a new kind of guitar game.

New Lawsuit Alleges Valve Ripped Off Patent For Steam Controller Design

3 years 3 months ago

A new lawsuit filed this month in Washington alleges that the video gaming giant Valve Corporation supposedly stole a design feature it implemented in its Steam Controller from a smaller tech company that has connections to the controller manufacturer SCUF.

The lawsuit states Valve was warned in 2014 that a prototype of its Steam Controller, the company's attempt to move PC gaming into a more console-focused experience, used the same rear-sided control paddles Ironburg Inventions patented that year. It goes on to say that SCUF CEO Duncan Ironmonger saw Valve's Steam Controller prototyped at CES in January not long after learning about the patent. (Ironburg is SCUF's IP-holding arm.) Ironmonger warned Valve staff of the alleged infringement at CES 2014 and wrote the company a letter that March saying the patent was Ironburg "creating a new category of controllers."

In the Zoom trial this week, Ironburg lawyer Robert Becker told the jury that "Valve's intentional disregard of its infringement is at the heart of this case." Becker continued lambasting the gaming giant, referring to the larger Valve as "Goliath" and the smaller Ironburg as "David."

The White House Is Monitoring The GameStop Stock Situation; AOC And Elizabeth Warren Weigh In

3 years 3 months ago

The White House is monitoring the wild and ever-changing situation with video game retailer GameStop's stock price, while Senator Elizabeth Warren and US Representative Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez have addressed the situation by criticizing Wall Street bankers, hedge funds, private equity firms, and investors. White House press secretary Jen Psaki confirmed this during her daily briefing on Wednesday, telling reporters that US Secretary of the Treasury Janet Yellen and her team are watching what's going on, though there is no word on if any action will be taken.

"Our team, our economic team including [Secretary of the Treasury Janet Yellen] and others, are monitoring the situation. It's a good reminder, though, that the stock market isn't the only measure of the health of our economy," Psaki said.

GameStop's stock price has exploded in recent days due in part to the WallStreetBets subreddit taking on hedge funds and short-sellers who bet against the retailer. It is a complicated and involved situation, and it's led to a wider discussion around how online chatter can, in real time, impact the stock market and in turn the US economy. Members of WallStreetBets are now seemingly turning their attention to the struggling movie theatre chain AMC, which is another stock that hedge funds have shorted in recent weeks due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

Higher Frame Rate, Ray Tracing, And More Coming To Control: Ultimate Edition

3 years 3 months ago

Remedy has broken down what players can expect from the Control: Ultimate Edition on February 2, including details on ray tracing, frame rates, and more.

Thomas Puha, communications director at Remedy, shared numerous details about Control on the beefier consoles on Twitter. Control will feature two gameplay modes: Performance which will let the game run at 60 FPS; and Graphics, which reduces the framerate to 30 FPS but includes new features such as ray tracing. The Xbox Series S will only get the Performance mode.

This is the typical divide that most games are taking when moving over to the new consoles. When asked about whether the studio might explore a hybrid mode that mixes high framerate with some ray tracing (like Spider-Man: Miles Morales), Puha shot the idea down.

You Have To Play Hitman 3's Escalation Missions

3 years 3 months ago

Once you play through Hitman 3's main story, you've seen a good chunk of each level. You'll probably remember where the important items, areas, and traps are located. And if you did most of the Mission Stories, or went through multiple attempts to complete some unique challenges, you have a decent grasp of how the clockwork-style design of every level works. Even then, you're missing out on a big chunk of what the modern Hitman games offer.

You may have seen the "Escalation" option in the menus of Hitman 3 (or any of the three games), or maybe you haven't since it's off to the side when you select a destination, or cycling through the main menu like an event notification. If you're not sure what they are quite yet, Escalation missions drop the normal objectives of their levels and instead give you all-new targets to eliminate, but that's not all. Each Escalation comes in multiple parts, gradually increasing the difficulty and complexity of the objectives by setting specific conditions that build off the previous part. Most conditions consist of assassinating certain targets with a specific weapon or trap while wearing a particular disguise--often with a restricted loadout and without saves. And I'd argue this is some of the best content Hitman has to offer.

Three of the four are similar, requiring teams of players to collect and stockpile as many gears as possible to win the round. The one mode that's different, Gridfall, borrows some elements from Mediatonic's Fall Guys in that sections of the floor will break away and fall as the match goes on. In Gridfall, players will have a limited number of lives to become the last one standing, though additional lives can be earned as players score more points. There are also single-player modes that function as campaigns for Destruction AllStars' 16 characters.

PS Plus February 2021 Games Include PS5's Control, Destruction AllStars

3 years 3 months ago

Sony has unveiled February's lineup of PlayStation Plus freebies for PS5 and PS4 users. We've known about one of the upcoming free games since the PS5's launch. Destruction AllStars, which was originally slated to release alongside the console, will be available to PS Plus subscribers in February. The vehicular combat game is a PS5 exclusive and joins Concrete Genie and Control: Ultimate edition, which is getting a free PS5 upgrade on February 2. All three games will be available to claim starting February 2.

Destruction AllStars is an online multiplayer title developed by Lucid Games. Players take control of one of 16 playable characters, each of whom has their own vehicle with unique weapons and moves. As the title suggests, the goal is to zip around the arena and destroy your opponents' vehicles. If your vehicle gets destroyed, you can compete on foot, which understandably will make it tougher to emerge victorious. Destruction AllStars will be free for subscribers until April 5.

PS5, Xbox Series X, And PC Part Shortages Won't End Soon, Says AMD

3 years 3 months ago

AMD CEO Lisa Su has indicated that supply shortages for gaming consoles, desktop CPUs, and GPUs will continue until the second half of 2021, with the PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X, and Series S most affected.

The news was included in AMD's full-year financial earnings (via Tom's Hardware), which showed the company surpassing its past earning records with a strong Q4. This was in part thanks to the launch of a slew of AMD-powered products, including both current generation consoles, AMD's Zen 3-powered Ryzen CPUs, and RX 6000 series graphics cards.

Supply of all three has been tight since launch, however, and Su expects this to continue being the case until new production capacity comes online. Su also pointed out that lower-cost components for low-end PCs and both consoles will be affected the most given the overwhelming demand, with the prospects for new stock of much higher-priced components looking more positive over the same period.
