Weekend Warrior – Riddle Me This

2 years 2 months ago

Another week is in the books, and a new month has risen. We're officially in the thick of March, and while game releases are still coming in hot as they did all throughout February, something about this weekend feels like there's a tad of a respite. With Triangle Strategy's launching today, many may choose to sink time into its engaging political tactics, while others may take in a showing of the newest iteration of the dark knight in The Batman. But what is the Game Informer staff keeping tabs on over the next couple of days? Read on to find out...

Wesley LeBlanc – This weekend, my plans are quite similar to the last: Elden Ring. I’m obsessed with this game and can’t stop playing it. 35 hours in, and I’m not even 30% through it, I think. However, I will be taking a small break from The Lands Between to go watch The Batman in theaters (again lol) and to play 7 Wonders, the popular board game, for the first time ever with some friends. I’m also very excited to check out the new HBO Max show, Our Flag Means Death. Taika Waititi? Pirates? What We Do In The Shadows-style comedy? Sign me up!

Jill Grodt – Despite the pull of Elden Ring, Horizon Forbidden West, and all the other great games begging to be played right now, my weekend is full of board game nights with multiple groups of friends. However, nothing can keep me from hopping on Torrent and galloping through The Lands Between for long!

Dan Tack – Final Fantasy VI Pixel Remaster. And Elden Ring.

Final Fantasy XIV: Endwalker's First Major Patch Sets Us On A New Adventure

2 years 2 months ago

Platform: PlayStation 5, PlayStation 4, PC, Mac
Publisher: Square Enix
Developer: Square Enix
Release:

Members of the Final Fantasy XIV held a live Letter From the Producer presentation this morning, where Producer Naoki Yoshida (AKA Yoshi-P) gave some insight into what players will find in the first big patch for the Endwalker expansion.

Titled Newfound Adventure, Patch 6.1 will introduce just that: a new adventure to embark on. Or, at least, the beginnings of one. Rolling credits on Endwalker's main scenario closed the book on many ongoing storylines, including the overarching narrative of the Ascians, Primals, the Garlean Empire as we know it, and even more threads. So, now the FFXIV team is ramping up something new, and unfortunately, something that is still unknown to us at this point.

Zelda: Breath Of The Wild Is Just As Brilliant Today As It Was In 2017

Developer: Nintendo

Rating: Everyone 10+

When The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild released alongside the Nintendo Switch in 2017, I was apprehensive to say the least. I enjoyed what I played at E3 2016, and adored the art style, but the myriad ways in which the game took my favorite series and turned it on its head had me worried I'd be left with a shadow of what made me fall in love with it in the first place. Once I finally got the finished game in my hands, it clicked almost immediately for me, and all my fears fell by the wayside.

Reader Discussion – Celebrating Five Years Of Switch: Favorite And Underrated Games

2 years 2 months ago

Developer: Nintendo

It's hard to imagine Nintendo released its most recent console, Switch, five years ago today. With it started the handheld hybrid revolution ushered in by one of the greatest games of all time The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild, and later in the year, Super Mario Odyssey. It's been a hell of a ride so far, and in the half-decade since its release, the Nintendo Switch has gone toe-to-toe with not one, but now two generations of powerhouse consoles from rival brands Xbox and PlayStation, and continues to sell well despite being undeniably a less graphically powerful device.

The Switch has been home to tons of great gaming experiences since becoming available on March 3, 2017. I'd like to know two things from you, dear readers: what is your favorite game on Switch of all time, and what is one game that you feel is an underrated gem that deserves to be played by more people? Give me your answers in the comments section below, and let's celebrate some great video games.

To lead off the discussion, here are my answers:

It turns out that “large guy on a horse” was a Tree Sentinel, a boss we had no chance of defeating after just a few hours of exploring The Lands Between.

Triangle Strategy – Review In Progress

2 years 2 months ago

Platform: Switch
Publisher: Nintendo
Developer: Square Enix
Release:

Triangle Strategy, a new tactical RPG led by Tomoya Asano, producer of the Bravely Default and Octopath Traveler games, makes its debut tomorrow. I’ve been playing through the political adventure, which centers on a young ruler named Serenoa who is thrust into intense power struggles and must decide what’s best for a new generation.

So far, I’m really digging Triangle Strategy, especially the interesting questions it poses about political strategies and how it involves the player in deciding those answers for themselves. Unfortunately, I haven’t finished the game, which has branching paths and multiple endings, so I’m not quite ready to deliver my final verdict. Until I complete the game, here are my impressions to give you an idea of what it has to offer.

Kirby and the Forgotten Land Preview - Hands-On With Kirby's New Mouthful Adventure

2 years 2 months ago

Platform: Switch
Publisher: Nintendo
Developer: HAL Laboratory
Release:

Kirby returns to the Nintendo Switch later this month in the new 3D platforming adventure, Kirby and the Forgotten Land. In it, Kirby is transported to another world, far from his home on Popstar, to a location that looks a lot like Earth, at least in the early levels. There in the titular Forgotten Land, Kirby will have to use all of his valuable Copy Abilities and a few new tricks like the very meme-able Mouthful Mode to explore and survive this unfamiliar setting. This week, I was able to go hands-on with the first world of the game, similar to what Switch owners can play today in a new demo that’s now available through the Nintendo eShop.
