The Witcher 3 Is Coming To PlayStation 5 And Xbox Series X

3 years 8 months ago

The Witcher 3 is among the most ambitious and acclaimed games of the current generation – but that doesn't mean it can't be improved. Today developer CD Projekt Red announced that it is working on bringing its massive RPG to next-gen consoles.

According to the announcement, this new version of The Witcher 3 is being built to take advantage of the hardware improvements on PS5 and Xbox Series X, and will include ray tracing and faster load times. But that isn't the only good news: If you already own the game on PS4 and Xbox One, you will be able to upgrade for free (much like what CD Projekt is doing with Cyberpunk 2077). The improvements are also coming to the PC version of the game via a free update.

The enhancements will cover all of the base game, along with additional content like the two expansions. CD Projekt did not announce a release date for this new iteration.

The Division 2 Gets A New Endgame PVE Mode

3 years 8 months ago

During the latest Division 2 State of the Game stream, "The Summit" endgame content was announced. Division agents must climb a 100-floor skyscraper, clearing each floor of alternating enemies. Boss battles take place every 10 floors and serve as checkpoints so that players don't have to start over at the 1st floor. The skyscraper itself changes every time players return adding an element of surprise as well as new, unexpected challenges.

Players who already own the Warlords of New York expansion pack will have immediate access to The Summit. The new game mode doesn't have a solidified release date, but it will be available on the PC test servers in the near future.

Endgame updates keep our favorite titles refreshing and engaging. Check out Marvel's Avengers' latest War Table stream for their endgame content plans.

Franchise Changes Are Coming To Madden 21

3 years 8 months ago

We were a little disappointed when we found out that Madden 21's franchise mode felt nearly identical to last year's version. But, thankfully, a new post from the Official Madden Blog has revealed that three updates will be coming in the near future.

The first update, scheduled to be incorporated at some point in mid-November, looks to bring fan-requested features to franchise mode. These additions include X-Factor/Superstar ability customization, revamped player card statistics, balanced progression of player development and traits, and a visual playoff bracket that shines some light on the NFL's new Wild Card format. The blog post goes on to state that the list of updates may be subject to change, but EA Tiburon also promises that these new features will not require players to restart their franchises.

Does the update overhaul make you excited for the future of Madden's franchise mode? Here are some of our own push backs that we hope will be resolved in future Madden entries.

Free-To-Play Rocket League Will Not Require PlayStation Plus Or Switch Online

3 years 8 months ago

In almost no time at all, Rocket League has established itself as a prominent Esport and casual arcade experience. A free-to-play update was announced for the game, meaning that Rocket League will eventually become more accessible and just about anyone will be able hop into the car-soccer arena and score their way to victory. Just about.

The Rocket League blog briefly announced that when the free-to-play model is implemented, PlayStation and Switch owners will not need online subscriptions to access and play the game. However, Xbox owners will still need an Xbox live subscription. In addition to these changes, the blog post also highlighted quality-of-life changes coming to Rocket League seasons, new high-tier competitive ranks,  and some quick chat call-outs.

The free-to-play update will be arriving this month. Are you excited that it will soon reach a wider audience? Even in unprecedented times like these, we think that Rocket League is the perfect game to commit your free time to.

EA Sports Opens Up About The Challenges Of Developing During COVID

3 years 8 months ago

To say that 2020 hasn't gone as any of us expected would be an understatement. With the COVID-19 global pandemic serving as a backdrop, everyone has been asked to change their way of life over the course of this year. Perhaps the place most impacted is how we work on a day-to-day basis. Businesses have been severely affected by the pandemic, and the recommended safety measures by experts and state officials have led to a major shift to working from home where possible. In a survey published by GDC in July, 70 percent of responding video game developers said they moved from an in-office setting to a work-from-home setting due to the pandemic, with only 3 percent saying they continued working in an office at the time of response.

Mario's History Distilled Into A Four-Minute Video

3 years 8 months ago

Today is a big day for Mario, with Nintendo announcing a 35th-anniversary celebration, along with games like Super Mario 3D All-Stars. That's all fun stuff, but the reminiscing doesn't stop there. Nintendo also released a video medley that shows footage from (almost) all of Mario's signature adventures, boiling 35 years of history down to about four minutes.

See classic moments, memorable enemies, and more by watching the video above. It runs through the Mario games chronologically, even though it misses a few steps along the way (Like Super Mario Land 2 and Super Mario Galaxy 2). Regardless, it's a neat little tribute and showcases the series' evolution over the years.

Mario Kart Live: Home Circuit Lets You Play Mario Kart In Real Life

3 years 8 months ago

The Mario Kart franchise has been a fan favorite since its beginnings on the SNES. Since that initial entry, we've seen advanced console and handheld entries, a mobile edition, and even an arcade version. However, independent developer Velan Studios is delivering it in a way we've never seen before: mixed reality.

Mario Kart Live: Home Circuit puts you in control of a physical kart as you race through your surroundings in real life using your Nintendo Switch. The physical kart responds to the action on screen, with boosts giving it a burst of speed, while getting hit with an item causes it to slam on the brakes. Players use gates that are included with the bundle to lay out a track for the kart in their home. You can race against the Koopalings in single-player, or take on others in four-player local multiplayer.

Mario Kart Live: Home Circuit is set to launch on Switch on October 16 for $99.99.

Super Mario Bros. 35 Is Like Tetris 99, But With Mario

3 years 8 months ago

Click to watch embedded media

It's been a big morning for Mario fans, with the reveals of Super Mario 3D All-Stars, Super Mario 3D World + Bowser's Fury, Super Mario All-Stars on Switch, and Game & Watch: Super Mario Bros. If that's not enough, Nintendo also announced Super Mario Bros. 35, a 35-player free-for-all that's reminiscent of Tetris 99's online mayhem, but for Mario.

Like the name indicates, 35 players compete in a race to see who can survive the longest. As players run through classic Super Mario Bros. levels, enemies they defeat will be launched into their opponents' screens, adding to the chaos. It looks like either the greatest idea ever (when you're winning) or a completely terrible mess (when you aren't).

Super Mario All-Stars joins the catalogs of Nintendo Switch Online subscribers later today. This addition joins other classics from the SNES and NES like Super Metroid, Super Mario Kart, Kirby's Adventure, The Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Past, Ninja Gaiden, and Donkey Kong Country.

Super Mario 3D World is coming to Nintendo Switch at long last. The game, which can be played in co-op, has long seemed like a perfect fit for the system thanks to the ease of multiplayer gaming with the Joy-Cons, and now players have that chance through Super Mario 3D World + Bowser's Fury.

Where's Our Tony Hawk's Pro Skater 1 + 2 Review?

3 years 8 months ago

Tony Hawk's Pro Skater 1 And 2

You're likely seeing several Tony Hawk's Pro Skater 1 + 2 reviews right now, but I'm not quite ready to deliver my final verdict. Before publishing our scored review, I want to spend a bit more time in the shoes of the legendary skater in these remakes.

While I'm not ready to finalize my review just yet, I'm very much enjoying this stroll (skate?) down memory lane. The overhauled visuals look good in action, and the gameplay feels smooth and intuitive; it's just as easy to pick up and play today as it was in 1999. I was pleasantly surprised how several of the park designs from the first two Tony Hawk games still hold up to this day. I also like the online multiplayer suite, even if it's a bit bare-bones, and being able to play created parks from other players around the world is awesome.

Be sure to return to GameInformer.com for our review in the coming days!

You Can Cancel Your Switch eShop Preorders Now

3 years 8 months ago

Preordering a game on the Switch eShop used to be essentially the same as buying it; you were charged for the game immediately, and could not cancel the preorder. However, that process has now changed thanks to a recent eShop update.

As detailed on the Nintendo support page, you can now cancel preordered software – assuming that it is more than seven days away from release. That's the point when preordered games are typically available to pre-load, so that's when your purchase becomes final.

It appears that this new feature only applies to new preorders; if you have preorders from before the new update, you cannot cancel them for a refund.

No Xbox Series X Info At Tokyo Game Show

3 years 8 months ago

Even though we don't know exactly when it is coming out (or how much it costs), every day brings us closer to the November release of the Xbox Series X. With the looming launch, gamers are eager for any new information, and we look forward to any event that might provide it. But if you were counting on Microsoft's presence at the Tokyo Game Show's virtual showcase to be the next big step, you shouldn't get your hopes up.

https://twitter.com/Xbox/status/1300985439407362049

On Twitter and in a blog post, Microsoft clarified that the TGS event won't have any new next-gen news. It is smart of Microsoft to set these expectations early so viewers aren't disappointed – but that doesn't mean Microsoft's segment isn't worth checking out.  A celebration of Japanese game creators and content related to Minecraft and Flight Simulator still sounds interesting.

Tokyo Game Show 2020 was canceled due to the global pandemic, so this virtual event is taking the place of the in-person event traditionally held at Makuhari Messe.

Cover Reveal – Kena: Bridge Of Spirits

3 years 8 months ago

Kena: Bridge of Spirits was one of the standout trailers shown during Sony's PlayStation 5 reveal event, introducing players to a beautiful world and a host of cute helpers known as the Rot. We're excited to announce that Ember Lab's lush adventure game is our next cover story. In the next issue of Game Informer magazine, we take a closer look at the game and its fascinating development.

How did a studio with roots in commercial animation move over to the world of video games? How did the team land on the idea of a young adventurer on a mission of healing and reconciliation? What the heck are the Rot? And how did an up and coming studio not only get their hands on PlayStation 5 development tools but also land a highly coveted slot in the console's first major announcement event?

We explore those questions and many more in our 14-page cover story, which will be hitting next week. Sorry to keep you waiting, but we were too excited about this one to stay completely quiet.

The Outer Worlds was one of our favorite games last year, with Obsidian delivering an experience that was reasonably sized and perfect for repeat plays. Its first of two announced DLC packs, Peril of Gorgon, is adding some new places to explore and things to, well, kill.

Check out today's NGT for a look at the asteroid Gorgon, where things may not be what they appear to be. OK, fine. It's a video game. Of course, everything is going to be all messed up. Otherwise, what would you be doing there? Sheesh!

Indie Studio Vlambeer Is Shutting Down

3 years 8 months ago

After 10 strong years, indie-studio Vlambeer is closing its doors. Founded by Rami Ismail and Willam Nijman, the company has made a long line of beloved titles like Ridiculous Fishing and Nuclear Throne. While most development studios close for financial reasons, Ismail and Nijman have chosen to end the company of their own volition.

https://twitter.com/Vlambeer/status/1300840760296837120

In an interview with Kotaku, Ismail detailed that the decision to close was ultimately about moving on to newer and greater ventures, "Maybe because of that growth it has become really clear that what the two of us want to do with our lives is just different." Ismail says. "After Nuclear Throne, it felt a bit like we had proven everything Vlambeer had to prove, and after a well-earned break, after such a demanding project we realized that we had both found our own separate ways forward."

Despite closing suddenly, Vlambeer has left a lasting impact on the ever-growing indie-game community. In light of that, here are some upcoming indie games that you should keep an eye on.

Fortnite Now Has A Black Panther Statue

3 years 8 months ago

The recent death of actor Chadwick Boseman has left a life-sized crater in the hearts of Marvel fans and general moviegoers alike. While the film industry has been paying tribute to Boseman's immense talent on and off the screen, video game developer Crystal Dynamics (at the beginning of their War Table stream) paid their respects to his memory as well.

Fortnite, known for its many crossovers with fan-favorite comic book heroes, released a new update that includes a statue of the Black Panther. While the update has been planned for some time, fans have been venturing to the statue to pay respect to Boseman. Perched on a rocky cliff as if watching over and protecting its territory,  a large statue of the titular mammal can be found just west of the Misty Meadows arena. If they approach the statue, players will also be able to hear music inspired by the Black Panther movie.

Black Panther is a stirring and profound example of diverse storytelling; enhanced by the film's cast with Chadwick Boseman at its center. Here's why we definitely need a Black Panther video game too.

Halo Infinite Teams Up With Monster Energy

3 years 8 months ago

While Halo Infinite is delayed to 2021, a partnership between Monster Energy and Halo Infinite begins now. You can pick up Monster Energy Halo Infinite drinks to earn XP bonuses, bank them, stack them, and get ready to put in those long energy drink fueled shooty hours.

Okay, so XP bonuses are nice but what else? Snapcodes. Yeah that's right. Halo Infinite Snapchat filters. I don't know what the hell people do on Snapchat to be honest, but I had fun with the filters on Instagram once, so it's probably pretty cool.

Finally, the partnership has a veritable arsenal of weapon skins, weapon emblems, and player emblems to unlock. These are probably the most enticing reason to get players to pound some cans of caffeinated candy. They actually look pretty slick.

While not exactly a shocker, any scrap of information regarding the upcoming console release is a tall drink of water in a knowledge desert, as we wait patiently for pricing and release date information.

While Microsoft provided a release window for Xbox Series X, Sony has yet to unveil any details of this nature. With console launches expected to hit the holiday window this year, both video game industry titans are holding critical information until what appears to be the last possible moment.
