Mass Effect Lives On With BioWare Tease Of Liara's Return

3 years 5 months ago

The Mass Effect trilogy is a story that changed gaming and changed many lives. Becoming Commander Shepard was a transformative experience for many BioWare fans, but through the years that love has been tarnished with changes that left fans uncertain and familiar names moving onto other projects. Following the reception that Andromeda received, many counted the Mass Effect franchise out but during The Game Awards, BioWare gave fans hope once more.

The teaser showed off Liara and a broken relay with a message of hope for Mass Effect's future. This teaser didn't say much, but it said so much at the same time. While Shepard may be gone, their legacy lives on and it looks like we may be seeing some of our old favorites once more, even with the remaster of the trilogy on the way.

A BioWare rep tells me that this game is very early in development, but the fact that the team is working on it at all, and far enough in the storyboard phase to share a plot point like a broken relay is incredible.

Ghosts 'N Goblins Resurrection Is Coming To Nintendo Switch On February 25

3 years 5 months ago

The Game Awards 2020 contained plenty of reveals. This one can only be described as a blast from the past. The way past. Ghosts 'n Goblins was one of those ancient greats that had you coming back for more even as you got absolutely destroyed in the first level. It was a battle against all kinds of horrible undead opponents and monsters, and now the franchise is coming back with an all new title injected with plenty of familiar aspects from Ghosts 'n Goblins and Ghouls 'n Ghosts. Get ready for Ghosts 'n Goblins Resurrection coming to the Switch on February 25.

Take on zombies, skeletons, pigmen, and many other iconic opponents in your quest, with new art direction and design. Even with their new takes, they're quite recognizable. I'm curious as to how this new offering in the series will handle the difficulty of the game, because the original game was a memorization muscle memory nightmare, cool as it was. Are you going to be able to play with unlimited lives? Cheat codes? None of the above? We'll see. But the original classics were definitely games that defined the term "Nintendo-hard." Man, I'm still thinking about getting my armor dinged off by a stray zombie swing. Still, I do want to get back on the field with Arthur and try to time all my jumps and lance throws. I'm not sure why.

Well then, take a look at the trailer and see what kinds of ghosts and goblins are going to do you in when Ghosts 'n Goblins Resurrection lands on the Switch on February 25.

Outriders' New Trailer Teaches You How To Survive

3 years 5 months ago

Click here to watch embedded media

Outriders is the upcoming shooter/RPG that casts players as super-powered warriors trying to survive and thrive on the hostile planet of Enoch. However, if you think this is a traditional shooter that has you crouching behind cover and using medkits to heal, then think again. Publisher Square Enix and developer People Can Fly just released a new trailer for Outriders that emphasizes the game’s ability to keep the action moving.

The trailer (above) runs through the “Mantras of Survival,” which are really just four tips that you should keep in mind while playing Outriders. They make a lot of sense individually, but as a whole, the paint the picture of a game that wants to keep players moving and shooting constantly, rather than getting caught in prolonged shooting-gallery encounters. The tips include things like “cover is for cowards” and “kill to heal,” so Outriders definitely doesn’t encourage conservative play.

The other two pointers are “think aggressive” and “powers on tap.” That first one is self-explanatory, but the second means that you have an array of special abilities with generous cooldowns,  so you shouldn’t worry about saving them only for dire situations – and that you shouldn’t just always be shooting stuff with your firearms.

Among Us New Map Revealed Alongside A Geoff Keighley Mask

3 years 5 months ago

Among Us is an indie treasure that released back in 2018 and flew under the radar. Luckily, it was given a much-deserved second lease on life this year, rising to become one of the most popular titles of 2020. With a small team less than the fingers on your hand, Among Us has become a cultural phenomenon and due to that success, there is more content on the way.

The new Airship map drops next year. While we don't have a release date, we know it's coming sometime earlier in the year and will bring with it new tasks, choice of starter room, ladders, and a few more surprises. While that release date is a little bit sus, the new map looks pretty awesome. Check it out:

So no new map today like many thought, but there is something dropping! Become the Game Awards host yourself with the limited-time Geoff Keighley mask in-game, available tonight.

Monster Hunter Rise Gets A Demo In January

3 years 5 months ago

Capcom's Monster Hunter Rise hits the Nintendo Switch on March 26, but a demo is coming in January. Announced at The Game Awards 2020, the limited-time demo will include online play for those that have a Nintendo Switch Online membership. A fun trailer accompanied the announcement, showcasing some environments and characters for the upcoming Monster Hunter game. We get a look at various monsters, eating in town to get buffed up for fights, and a good look at some wirebug shenanigans.

The wirebug allows players to zip around environments (and monsters!) and has unique complementary attacks for each weapon. And yes, it wouldn't be Monster Hunter Rise without the Palamutes. Don't worry, if you love palicoes they're still around to support you, but you can mount the canine Palamutes to move around stages incredibly fast. Perfect for tracking down those pesky flying monsters from area to area!

We also get a glimpse of the sleep-sloshing Somnacanth and the clever Bishaten in this trailer, though the clips are so fast it's not really enough to start assessing how we're going to take down these monsters. Here's what we do know. Somnacanth is an aqua leviathan that can shoot out sleeping powder which stuns players and leave them vulnerable, that much was clear. Bishaten enjoys persimmons (and throwing them) and has some big bad tail attacks. And apparently spin moves. Looks like a nasty opponent, and one that the high mobility of the wirebug will be essential for taking on.

Housemarque's Returnal Gets A Release Date On PlayStation 5

3 years 5 months ago

Housemarque's trippy, spooky PlayStation 5 title Returnal has a release date at last. Get ready to break the cycle on March 19. Announced at The Game Awards 2020, the release date should come as a warm welcome for those looking for an update on the game. Announced back in June, the game is still shrouded in mystery, but it's pretty clear that it involves some alien stuff and a cyclical gameplay loop. There's some really weird stuff in this game; we know that much. The announcement trailer shows off plenty of that, take a look at it below.

Housemarque has a number of interesting titles under its belt like Nex Machina and Resogun, but Returnal certainly looks to be a significant diversion from the arcade-centric blasty-fare.

F.I.S.T.: Forged In Shadow Torch Debuts Action-Packed New Trailer

3 years 5 months ago

F.I.S.T.: Forged In Shadow Torch is an upcoming 2D action-platformer by TiGames where players control Rayton, a rabbit warrior outfitted with a weaponized backpack suit used to kick butt in a dieselpunk world. If that absurdly awesome premise hasn't sold you, maybe the game's latest gameplay trailer will?

The action-packed gameplay trailer shows off the fast-paced action and Metroidvania style exploration and platforming. Rayton's backpack can transform a fast-paced whip, powerful drill, or a good old fashioned fist for varied approach to combat. While each is powerful on their own, mixing them up in elaborate combo strings is key to really laying the smackdown on enemies. F.I.S.T. looks like a blast, but we'll have to wait until spring 2021 to get our hands on it. In the meantime, have fun salivating over the video below.

Fall Guys captured our jelly bean-loving hearts earlier this year and since then it has given us nightmares, some of the best memes, and really fun gameplay. Now, it's time for some snow thrown into that mix with Fall Guys season 3.

Giant snowballs, new levels, more skins, and cold-drenched shenanigans. This is the battle-royale game that even battle-royale haters can enjoy. It's too cute, how can you be mad at that?

This game is the adorable indie battle-royale game that fills that hole in our hearts that Mario Party left behind. It's also surprisingly brutal, even more so with the addition of the Big Yeetus (yes, that's its real name). It's a charming game that proves that a title doesn't have to have a big, intricate setup to have a good time.

If you haven't tried out Fall Guys yet, you should! It's available on PlayStation 4 and PC, though not on Xbox yet as the team focuses on making the current versions the best they can possibly be.

New Look At Dragon Age 4 During The Game Awards 2020

3 years 5 months ago

The Game Awards 2020 showcase has officially kicked off and true to BioWare's word earlier this week, we've got a new update regarding Dragon Age 4 and it's an actual trailer this time! While not the real-deal quite yet, the cinematic teaser shows off what looks like Zevran's concept art armor, more magic, the return of darkspawn, and my arch nemesis-meets-love-interest: Solas.

In the latest video, we've got a sneak peek at what's next from the studio that gave us magisters, rebellion, and that "creepy red s---". While Dragon Age 4 is still a long way off, this does at least appease a little of that urge to learn more. It's also fitting, given that Dragon Age 4 was first revealed during the Game Awards back in 2018.

Given that the ending of the Trespasser DLC in Dragon Age: Inquisition shows off a very frustrated looking Inquisitor stabbing a map of the Tevinter Imperium in their search for our Egg Boy Lord And Savior Solas, it's been pretty obvious that this is where the next game will take place. Never mind the fact that the most recent comics also had a heavy focus on the blood mage capital of the world, even including one of the Inquisitor's inner circle: Dorian. With Mage Killer, Blue Wraith, and Tevinter Nights all focusing heavily on Tevinter, Antiva, and Nevarra, it looks like a lot of the remaining loose ends could see a resolution, not just with the Dread Wolf himself.

Take A Look At Some Flashy Nier Replicant Gameplay

3 years 5 months ago

The Game Awards pre-show gave us a look at gameplay for Nier Replicant ver. 1.22474487139 . The game is the western release of an alternative version of the 2010's Nier that launched only in Japn (called Nier Gestalt), which has similar content but different characters and story beats.

The clip shows off some hack n’ slash combat reminiscent of Nier: Automata. Fast-paced melee attacks are combined with flashy bullet-hell sequences and, of course, tons of exploding metal. Replicant is more than a port, beefing up the original content with re-recorded music as well as new tracks and brand new characters.  The game is being handled by Toy Logic with director Yoko Taro helping lead the charge.

Disney Reveals A Wealth Of New Star Wars Shows And Movies

3 years 5 months ago

As part of today’s Disney investor call, Disney has come out of nowhere with a certain “shock and awe” approach to new project announcements, including a large number of new Star Wars TV shows on the way to DisneyPlus.

Rangers of the New Republic is a new series set during the same era as The Mandalorian.

Likewise set in that same era (and hinted at recently in The Mandalorian), we’re also getting a dedicated series called Ahsoka, focused on Anakin Skywalker’s former Padawan.

While we've known for some time it was in the works, we also got word that Andor is an original series hitting DisneyPlus in 2022, following the spy/operative seen in Rogue One.

Obi-Wan Kenobi, a series long desired by fans of the venerable Jedi, is set 10 years after Revenge of the Sith.

Previously announced, we also got a new look at The Bad Batch from Lucasfilm Animation, focused on the unusual squad of troopers seen earlier in the final season of The Clone Wars.

Star Wars: Visions is an original series of animation short films, created by a set of of some of the “world’s best Japanese anime creators,” set to release in 2021 on DisneyPlus.

We’re also getting a new event series called Lando, being developed by Justin Simien, who is known for his previous work on Dear White People.

Take a breath. There’s more.

Shady Part Of Me Is Available Now

3 years 5 months ago

Focus Home Interactive and Douze-Dixièmes announced today at The Game Awards 2020 that Shady Part of Me is available... right now! The puzzle adventure is available on PlayStation 4, Xbox One, Switch, and PC (Steam and Epic Games Store). If you're looking to get in right away, there is a 10-percent discount on the title until December 24.

The game is a puzzle adventure starring a little girl and her shadow. The concept is that you can swap between the girl and her shadow at any time to solve challenges and find solutions. If you can't tackle an obstacle as the girl, perhaps the shadow can handle it. Many of the conundrums involve light, darkness, and perspective switching. The game's watercolor aesthetic keeps things quite dreamlike as you discover new environments and strange mysteries.

Focus Home Interactive announced the partnership with Douze-Dixièmes earlier this year in October.

Telltale Games Gives Short Update On The Wolf Among Us Season 2

3 years 5 months ago

Telltale Games has seen its fair share of success and adversity. A large majority of gamers know the studio from its work on The Walking Dead; a critically acclaimed episodic adventure that started releasing a little under a decade ago. Others recognize Telltale Games as the developers behind The Wolf Among Us - another episodic adventure that chronicled a noir version of Aesop's Fables. The Wolf Among Us Season 2 was supposed to release in 2019, but there's been radio silence on its development and new release date. Today, Telltale Games released a statement on Twitter, updating fans on the state of The Wolf Among Us Season 2.

On this week's episode of The Game Informer Show, we discuss a handful of the games we've been playing recently. Okay, it's just Cyberpunk 2077, but that game is still a handful. We're also joined by community member Bob Buel (of the 99 Questions podcast), who won an auction during Extra Life to be on the show, and he talks about some games he's been playing, like Astro's Playroom and Tetris Effect: Connected

At the end of the show, we interview arcade industry vet Eugene Jarvis who talks about his work on games like Defender, Robotron, and Smash TV. Jarvis also shares more about how fans would try to cheat old arcade games for free plays. It's a full show, but we make time for another fantastic round of community emails in there somewhere. So please join Kim Wallace, Andrew Reiner, Liana Ruppert, Bob Buel, Alex Van Aken, and myself for another wild and ever-entertaining episode!

Sony Confirms Crunchyroll Acquisition For $1.175 Billion

3 years 5 months ago

Sony's interest in the anime streaming service Crunchyroll has been known for a while now, but back in October, we reported that it looked like a deal would be closing soon. Now the company has confirmed that it has acquired the anime hotspot, selling it to its own Funimation, effectively absorbing its largest competition.

“The Crunchyroll team has done an extraordinary job of not only growing the Crunchyroll brand but also building a passionate community of anime fans. Crunchyroll’s success is a direct result of the company’s culture and commitment to their fans,” said Tony Goncalves, WarnerMedia’s CRO, in a statement shared by Polygon. “By combining with Funimation, they will continue to nurture a global community and bring more anime to more people. I’m incredibly proud of the Crunchyroll team and what they have been able to accomplish in the digital media space in such a short period of time. They’ve created an end-to-end global ecosystem for this incredible art form.”
