Destiny 2's Halloween-Themed Festival Of The Lost Begins Today

2 years 7 months ago

Destiny 2’s annual Halloween event, Festival of the Lost, begins yet again and Bungie has laid out all of the tricks and/or treats Guardians can indulge in over the next few weeks.

Three Haunted Sectors contain ghoulish headless foes for players to hunt across the Moon and Essus. Guardians can fill their bags with weapons such as the Exotic Jurassic Green Pulse Rifle and cruise around on an exotic, tarantula-shaped Sparrow. You can also earn the Bump in the Night Emblem courtesy of special event organizer extraordinaire, Eva Levante.

Perhaps the best additions are dinosaur-themed gear and ornaments available at the Eververse store, which is the result of a community poll held earlier this year. Personally, I just want to throw pumpkin bombs like a sci-fi Green Goblin. Get a glimpse at what’s in store in the trailer below.

Festival of the Lost concludes on November 2. Of course, Season of the Lost is still in full swing and if you’re enjoying Destiny 2 via Xbox Game Pass on PC, today is extra sweet as the Beyond Light expansion joins the library as well.

Marvel’s Guardians Of The Galaxy Gets Launch Trailer, Adam Warlock Teased

2 years 7 months ago

Hot off the Will Poulter-Adam Warlock casting decision for the third chapter in the Guardians of the Galaxy film franchise, Eidos Montreal released the launch trailer for its upcoming GOTG game. We get multiple montages of action setpieces and various characters to the tune of Motley Crue’s “Kickstart My Heart.” More importantly, we’re pretty sure Adam Warlock was teased towards the end of the trailer. His silhouette and cape are sure signs that he’ll be involved in the game, and many fans would agree.

In the comments section of the trailer’s Twitter post, one viewer asked if the shadowy, muscular hero (seen at 2:07 in the video above) is none other than the god-like fighter himself. The official Marvel’s Guardians of the Galaxy account responded with the eyes emoji  you know the one. If this doesn’t confirm that Adam Warlock is in the game, we don’t know what does! You can check out the brief exchange below.

SpongeBob And TMNT Adorn The Latest Custom Xbox Series X Consoles

2 years 7 months ago

Microsoft has been dropping custom Xbox Series X consoles left and right lately. Video games, superhero movies, and even snack foods have all been plastered on the tough-to-find console, though the latest collaboration falls more into the game category. Mostly.

To celebrate last week’s launch of the Super Smash Bros.-like fighter Nickelodeon All-Star Brawl, Microsoft has created not one but two custom Nick-themed Series X’s. The first is the too-perfect-for-words SpongeBob Squarepants console with a matching controller. Even if SpongeBob wasn’t one of the most universally known characters in the game, he’d be a shoo-in for this treatment because he’s square which, in addition to being the shape of evil, is what the Series X resembles. Check him out below.

Monster Hunter Rise On PC Won't Have Cross Save Or Crossplay With Switch

2 years 7 months ago

getting started in monster hunter rise

With a port of Monster Hunter Rise hitting PCs via Steam in January, fans of the game had questions about two big features when switching to this enhanced version: will there be cross-save or crossplay with the original title on Switch? Capcom ripped the bandaid off and let us down gently in a tweet today.

“We’ve heard your requests for Cross-Save / Cross-Play for #MHRise & #Sunbreak, but unfortunately, after looking into it throughout the development process, we found we are unable to implement it this time. As always, we appreciate your continued feedback and support.”

According to the developers, it looks like the dream of cross-save and crossplay for Monster Hunter is still not yet realized. In a game where players spend hundreds of hours building an arsenal of weapons and a hunter’s chest full of armor and equipment, it’s understandably discouraging that those who want to play on PC will have to start fresh.

Ubisoft Will Delist The Original Rocksmith Early Next Week

2 years 7 months ago

According to a new Ubisoft blog, the original Rocksmith will be delisted at the start of next week, making it unavailable for purchase. You’ll no longer be able to purchase the game from Steam, the Xbox Marketplace, or the PlayStation Store. This news comes less than a month after the publisher announced a delay of its new service Rocksmith+ to sometime in 2022.

Initially released in 2011, Rocksmith has been a tool to teach people how to play the guitar and bass using the real deal instruments, a neat alternative from products like Rock Band and Guitar Hero. Those looking to start learning from this specific release of Rocksmith will have to purchase by October 17. Here’s Ubisoft’s announcement of the delisting:

“One of the unique aspects of the Rocksmith method has been the ability to learn and play along to official master recordings of your favorite songs. But as of October 17, 2021, Rocksmith (2011) will no longer be available for purchase on any digital storefronts. Shortly after that, Rocksmith (2011) DLC will begin to be removed as well.”

Guide A Beast-Like Tribe By Looking To The Stars In Grotto Later This Month

2 years 7 months ago

Grotto is a unique narrative adventure game launching this month that drops you in the mystical role of a tribal Soothsayer, a fancy term for a fortune teller. Your primitive tribe is in trouble, so the superstitious clan turns to you for guidance. Be careful what you tell them, though; your fortunes have a significant impact on their lives, for better or worse.

Divining the fates of the beast-like villagers includes drawing constellations, reading bones, predicting the future, and even contacting the afterlife. While you possess some degree of supernatural ability, it’s up to you to interpret the meanings of otherworldly phenomena and communicate them to the tribe. Your followers, who you’ll get to know better through numerous visits, take everything you say as gospel, and your fortunes influence their actions, which can be to their benefit or lead them to disaster and even death. Think hard about what you want a star pattern to mean; you wouldn't want to inadvertently lead someone you like astray, would you? With a striking blend of colorful 2D and 3D art, Grotto looks as unique as its premise. Check out the original announcement trailer below.

Grotto comes from the aptly named Brainwash Gang and launches on October 20 on PC with a Steam demo available now. The game is also coming to PlayStation/Xbox consoles and Switch early next year.

2 years 7 months ago

Somebody tell Coral, err, Carl that his dad is in Fortnite.

Epic Games has added the famed sheriff-turned-zombie-killing-leader Rick Grimes to Fornite, and he's available for purchase right now in the Item Shop. Daryl Dixon and Michonne Hawthorne have also been added back to the Fortnite Item Shop to celebrate Rick's arrival, so if you missed out on them last time, now is your chance. Those that purchase Rick will receive his standard outfit as well as his Winter Rick Grimes outfit.

As you can see in the screenshot above, Rick comes with a unique pickaxe, back bling, and glider, much like the other outfits available for purchase.

Pokémon Company Confirms Monster Hunter-Like Style Of Exploration For Legends: Arceus

2 years 7 months ago

Pokémon Legends Arceus

Update, 10/11/21...

The Pokémon Company has confirmed to Kotaku that Pokémon Legends: Arceus will feature Monster Hunter-like exploration. This news comes after fans noticed that the in-game map features segmented areas like those seen in Pokémon Sword and Shield, rather than a wide-open map that indicates the game will be fully open-world as previously believed.

In Pokémon Legends: Arceus, Jubilife Village will serve as the base for surveying missions. After receiving an assignment or a request and preparing for their next excursion, players will set out from the village to study one of the various open areas of the Hisui region. After they finish the survey work, players will need to return once more to prepare for their next task. We look forward to sharing more information about exploring the Hisui region soon. -A statement from The Pokémon Company to Kotaku

As you can see from the statement above, players will be visiting "one" of the various "open areas" of the Hisui region when completing specific quests and catching Pokémon. This quest completion and exploration style is most like Capcom's Monster Hunter series, which often tasks players with completing quests collected at a central village hub while exploring segmented wild areas.

How Horror Can Enhance Non-Horror Games For The Better

2 years 7 months ago

Horror games are some of gaming’s best experiences, but only for those that can tolerate and sit through them from start to finish. But those who don’t play in the horror space can still get their fill in otherwise non-horror games because horror, no matter which genre it’s in, can enhance a game for the better.

Horror is extremely affecting. The jump scares that cause adrenaline spikes, the sweaty feeling of barely avoiding death, the persistent dread that slowly rises to a climactic rush – these emotions affect everyone in different ways.

At the heart of those emotions are the same feelings found in haunted houses, roller coasters, skydiving, and more: the feeling of getting as close as possible to death without actually dying. The horror that gets us close to death is effective in books, television, movies, and even games as a result. Game developers are aware of this, and it’s why horror finds itself sprinkled throughout all genres of video games, although sometimes one must look a little harder to find it.

One of the best examples of this is Fullbright’s Gone Home.

X-Men Could Be A Fantastic Roguelike (In The Right Hands)

2 years 7 months ago

In the world of comics, X-Men has been a hot property in recent years. While the popularity of Marvel’s mutants has rarely been at risk in the last couple of decades, the current narrative arc, launched with the House of X book in 2019, has injected new life into the characters and stories. That same story has all the makings of a thrilling video game and one that uses a very particular gameplay structure – the roguelike. As if written to use that very conceit, a roguelike X-Men game could capture something intriguing and exciting about the current fiction. And that vision would be at its best if it came from a small team given creative freedom to make the game its own.

Anime For Gamers

2 years 7 months ago

The billion-dollar Japanese animation industry continues to increase its popularity globally, thanks to more streaming programs supporting it. Outside of niche streaming services like Crunchyroll and Funimation, which have a sole focus on distributing anime, big-name companies like Netflix, Hulu, and Amazon have also brought more Japanese animated shows to their respective platforms. We now have more options than ever to choose from, which is a good thing, because a wide variety of genres and themed shows have cropped up over the years. And to the delight of gamers, a lot of them involve video games in some way.

There’s no denying the crossover between anime and video game fans. After all, many video games are influenced by anime, having similar plotlines, complete with flashy action sequences and thrilling heroics. We picked some anime that involve video games in creative ways, from going inside the trials and tribulations of a development studio to being transported into an MMORPG and living a different life. Here are our recommendations if you’re looking for the perfect combination of your favorite hobby and the anime asthetic.

Children Of Morta Is An Amazing Game And There's New Reason To Play It Again

2 years 7 months ago

Click here to watch embedded media

Children of Morta is a recommendation I give to people who are looking for something a little different to play. I'm extending that recommendation to you, too. This story-driven dungeon crawler has a powerful storytelling pulse, a rewarding progression system, and plenty of variety in its Diablo-like combat. You join the Bergson family on their quest to rid the land of an evil that will soon engulf their home. You get to play as each family member, and a narrator helps flesh them out. You see this family grow, suffer hardships, and unite to save everything they love. I adored this entire experience, giving it a review score of 9 out of 10.

Following the game's initial release, developer Dead Mage and publisher 11 Bit Studios have added a variety of content to give fans plenty of reasons to jump back in. The biggest reason to hop back in (or start a journey for the first time) just arrived in the Ancient Spirits DLC. You can still control any Bergson, but the the real hook of this new content is the new playable character named Yajouj’Majouj, a shifting entity born of the union of man and goblin. Yajouj’Majouj can shift forms on the fly and unleash unleash whirlwinds of magic or rely on the help of an ally.

Ryu Ga Gotoku Studio has confirmed that a sequel to last year’s Yakuza: Like A Dragon is in development, and that series creator Toshihiro Nagoshi is officially leaving Sega.

This news comes from a post on the official RGG site celebrating the studio’s 10th anniversary this year. In it, the studio thanks its fans for the support over the past 10 years alongside news that Nagoshi is departing from Sega.

Players Are Doing Some Pretty Wild Things In Halo Infinite

2 years 7 months ago

Halo Infinite isn’t even out yet, but that’s not stopping players from stretching its systems to their limits in the multiplayer technical previews as of late.

The latest batch of technical previews happened during the previous two weekends and in those previews, the classic Halo mode, Big Team Battle, was available to play. Matches took place on a map called Fragmentation in Big Team Battle – it’s basically Halo Infinite’s version of Valhalla from Halo 3 – and the sheer size of the map allowed players to test what is and isn’t possible in Halo Infinite.

The clip above showcases perhaps the most impressive Halo Infinite clip we’ve found. In it, streamer Mint Blitz discovers that if you grapple to a vehicle, your Spartan will basically follow that vehicle wherever it goes…including across basically the entirety of the Fragmentation map.

The Live-Action Detention Film Premieres In U.S. Theaters October 8

2 years 7 months ago

In the summer of 2019, we learned that a film adaptation of Red Candle Games’ horror game Detention was getting a live-action film. For those unfamiliar with Detention, it’s a creepy and well-received 2017 horror side-scroller about a student who explores a warped version of her school in search of her missing teacher. Fans excited to see the adventure translated into a film can finally see it in theaters beginning tomorrow.

Similar to the game, which in itself is based on a true story, Detention takes place in 1962 Taiwan, which is locked under martial law. The story stars Fang, a shy teenage girl from an abusive home, who joins an underground literary club that educates students using books banned by the government with the purpose of keeping the dream of freedom alive. This club is led by Professor Chang, who Fang realizes she can open up to, and she eventually falls in love with him. Unfortunately, the professor mysteriously vanishes and Fang awakens at her desk one night to discover that the school has become distorted in an otherworldly manner. Fang partners with Wei, another student, as they search for Professor Chang and figure out what’s going on as sinister supernatural entities stand before them.

Coffee Talk Episode 2 Brews Another Cup In 2022

2 years 7 months ago

Coffee Talk is a cool little game that dropped last January about brewing hot cups of bean juice while chatting up your colorful patrons and vibing to a relaxing soundtrack. Baristas looking to open up shop once more should be happy to learn that a follow-up, dubbed Episode 2: Hibiscus & Butterfly, is coming next year.

Like the first game, this visual novel-style adventure revolves around concocting a variety of flavorful brews for your problem-ridden customers. Set in an alternate fantasy version of modern-day Seattle, visitors can be humans, elves, werewolves, vampires, and other mythological races. You’ll serve returning favorites such as the writer Freya and police officer Jorji, while first-time visitors include Rionna, an aspiring opera singer, as well as the mysterious blue-haired woman shown at the end of the trailer.

Listening to your patron’s personal stories while brewing special drinks that influence their dialogue forms the crux of this laid-back, urban fantasy experience. Episode 2 doesn’t appear radically different from the first game, but fans who enjoy what Coffee Talk offered may be content with simply getting more of it with some new faces and storylines.

The First Resident Evil: Welcome To Raccoon City Trailer Has Arrived

2 years 7 months ago

Sony Pictures Entertainment has released the first trailer for Resident Evil: Welcome to Raccoon City, and as you might expect, it features plenty of scares, R-rated gore, and of course, zombies.

The trailer hits many of the beats of the first two Resident Evil games, including iconic locales like the Spencer Mansion, the RCPD, and more. It features plenty of Robbie Amell’s Chris Redfield and Kaya Scodelario’s Claire Redfield, protagonists from the first and second game respectively.

Click here to watch embedded media

In the trailer, we see Claire Redfield digging into Umbrella, the corporation we all know to be evil, only to discover that Umbrella is, in fact, evil. This investigation into the zombies Umbrella is creating brings the movie’s two protagonists to the infamous locations from the first two Resident Evil games. Eventually, they meet Avan Jogia’s Leon S. Kennedy and many of the other characters we know from the series.

Elsewhere in the trailer, we see Tom Hopper’s Albert Wesker, Hannah John-Kamen’s Jill Valentine (one of the playable protagonists in the first Resident Evil), Neal McDonough’s William Birkin, and more. It also features a glimpse at Lisa Trevor, one of the first to be experimented on by Umbrella in the Resident Evil universe.
