Review: Iron Man VR

3 years 10 months ago

I don't know what it is about Iron Man that drew me to him as a kid. His cool suit? His sassy demeanor? Eventually, Robert Downey Jr.? Maybe all of the above.

But one thing is for certain: stepping into his shoes in VR isn't quite as cool as it could be.

Catherine: Full Body's Nintendo Switch port is sweet

3 years 10 months ago

If you told me back in 2011 that Catherine was going to make its way to a future Nintendo console, I would have let out the most uproarious laughter and/or that cute Animal Crossing question mark reaction. My, how the times have changed.

Here we are in the year of our lord 2020 where literally nothing makes sense anymore, so why not port one of the most erotic puzzle games of all time to a Nintendo console? Seriously though, it's a smart move on Atlus' part to expand the Catherine: Full Body remaster to other consoles – especially one that is made for portable transportation.

However, it's a completely different story if you want to play this one in public...

Jaleco shmup P-47 Thunderbolt is this week's Arcade Archives release

3 years 10 months ago

It'ss a good time to be a shmup historian, as recent years have seen both old and new examples of the genre blasting back on multiple platforms with reckless abandon. Case in point: Jaleco classic P-47 Thunderbolt, the latest addition to Hamster's Arcade Archives range.

Initially released back in 1988, (as P-47: The Freedom Fighter), P-47 Thunderbolt is one of a number of shump titles that use World War II as the setting for some fast-paced anachronistic action. Players guide a lone fighter over a dense forest, a snowy mountain range, a huge battleship and a scorching sunset, taking down wave after wave of enemy fighters attacking from land, sea, and air. Basic weapon drops offer an edge in combat, while speed boosts help the player successfully evade returning fire.

You can check out the sky-high action in the video below, courtesy of World of Longplays.

Podtoid gets deathly serious with Deadly Premonition and Danganronpa

3 years 10 months ago

Thank the heavens June is almost over. This month has been a whirlwind of emotions, though it probably isn't helping that some of the Podtoid team are diving into more morose experiences than the others.

In this episode, CJ, Dan, Charlotte, and Chris talk Deadly Premonition, Danganronpa, Cyberpunk 2077, Top of the Pops circa-1989, and the ridiculous ways virtual reality renders our movements. All that, plus Charlotte details two great games you own if you bought the itch.io Bundle for Racial Justice and Equality, on Podtoid Episode 449.

The latest Pokemon: Twilight Wings episode is spooktacular

3 years 10 months ago

I've been really digging the Pokemon: Twilight Wings series so far.

If you haven't seen it yet, the objective is to provide more background info on the world of Pokemon Sword and Shield, diving into the lives of gym leaders and other important figures of this generation. You can catch up on every episode here: they're only a few minutes long each.

So far we've followed the journeys of Bea, Hop, Nessa and Oleana, but this recent episode (Moonlight) centers around Allister, the Ghost-type gym leader. As expected it's short, sweet and even touching. It's also continuing the core storyline of Twilight Wings that serves as the underlying foundation of the series: the tale of John, a sick kid who resides in a children's hospital.

Seriously, there's no continuity with the "core anime" and you don't have to have Sword and Shield experience to get the gist of each episode (though it helps fill in some details). Give it a shot!

Twenty-twenty has felt as though it's lasted 17 years, and yet we still have six more months of this nightmare ahead of us. I am not looking forward to what the back half of this year has in store for us, but one thing I am looking forward to is answering your Podtoid questions.

Hearing from the community has been an absolute bright spot for the Podtoid team this week, and as it's the first new show of the month, we're reaching out to you once more looking for your questions. If you have something you want to know from us, ask us in the comments below. The more creative the question, the more likely we'll answer it on air.

Whatcha been playing this week, Destructoid?

3 years 10 months ago

I'm going to hit you with a pretty wild truth, folks. We are now halfway through the year. That's right, only halfway. When I think back to January 1, 2020, I can't deny it feels like it happened on March 22, 1988. But nevertheless, we are here. I am here, as are you, and we'll continue to push forward as the tight-knit posse of pals that we are. Stay safe, and look after those around you. We'll keep the ball rollin'.

I haven't played much this week. I did put some time into Danganronpa: Trigger Happy Havoc, which is my first foray into the crazy/cute/creepy world of Monokuma and pals. I'm kind of digging it, though I'm sure the sequels are probably a little tighter and more accomplished as interactive experiences.

It's not only the weekend, but it's also July 4, so Happy Independence Day, my American friends. So before you man your crop-dusters to battle an army of extra-terrestrials, drop us a quick note below and let us know what games you've been hitting recently. Good luck out there, I hope you do President Bill Pullman proud.

Have a safe and pleasant weekend, from all of us at Destructoid.

Contest: Win Infliction: Extended Cut for Nintendo Switch

3 years 10 months ago

In today's contest you can win a Switch copy of Infliction: Extended Cut!

Happy 4th of July, everyone! The 4th is cool and all, but a little too patriotic and a little too un-scary for me. The ratios are way off, here. I don't like it, so let's change things up a little bit.

We've got some Switch copies of a creepy first-person horror game called Infliction: Extended Cut to give away to help make this holiday weekend a bit more spooky. Why should we have to wait until October to have all the scary fun?!

This fun little generator lets you edit classic video games with your own text

3 years 10 months ago

The Death Generator – a site that lets users swap out the text in classic video game intros, scenes, and dialogue boxes with their own silly writing – is making the rounds again on Twitter. It's fantastic.

Maybe you've come across this meme generator before, maybe you haven't. (For a bit, I was convinced we had already covered it on Destructoid, but I didn't find a trace.) Either way, the Death Generator is back, and it's precisely the kind of time-waster I want to mess around with on a holiday weekend.

You can choose from over 150 games, pop in your text, and save your image or insta-upload it to Imgur with a click. In some cases, like Sonic the Hedgehog 1 and 2, there's even an animated gif export.

This text generator is my favorite gaming culture project since that brain-racking sound effect quiz.

This Bloodborne clip proves that greed isn't good, especially when a boss has one hit left

3 years 10 months ago

If we're ranking the toughest bosses in Bloodborne, we'll probably never reach a consensus – the perceived difficulty of a fight can vary wildly depending on your playstyle, character build, and composure. I've been through the From Software wringer, and to this day it's tricky to pin down exactly what makes certain fights easier or harder for me than the average player. Everyone's different.

That said, a few contenders stand out to me. Laurence from the Old Hunters DLC is at the top of my most-despicable list. He's not necessarily the "hardest," but no one tested my patience more.

The First Vicar is a lava-spewing war of attrition. He's beefy. He doesn't let up. His room feels too cramped. The longer you persevere, the more aggressive Laurence seems to get. Near the end, when he's forced to crawl, it's super tempting to just finish the fight already – but that can be a mistake.

Bloodborne often rewards aggression with its health-regain mechanic, but the "don't be greedy" adage from the Souls series rings true, as illustrated in this tragic clip submitted by Reddit user TrubberDox.

There's a Xenoblade event in Tetris 99 this weekend

3 years 10 months ago

Nintendo hasn't tried to hide the fact that it is using its quasi-free-to-play battle royale Tetris 99 as a glorified advertising vessel. Every time a first-party Nintendo game comes out, it's almost guaranteed that it will get a theme and a weekend event in Tetris 99.

The trend continues with Xenoblade Chronicles: Definitive Edition, which has an event this weekend. Starting earlier this morning and running through Monday night, players can earn points based on placement in matches. Unlike prior events, there is no prize associated with this competition, but once you earn 100 points, you can use the Xenoblade theme post-event.

Rumors are heating up that Giancarlo Esposito is the Far Cry 6 villain

3 years 10 months ago

If recent rumors pan out, the Breaking Bad universe will be able to lay claim to two of Far Cry's key villains. Before his biggest break as Nacho Varga in Better Call Saul, Michael Mando voiced Vaas in Far Cry 3. Now, it seems as though drug-kingpin-disguised-as-chickenman Gus Fring is ready to leave his mark too.

In an interview with Collider (the whole thing is embedded above), actor Giancarlo Esposito acknowledges in passing that's he's working on a major video game. "This video game I did, which is going to be huge... [but I] can't really mention [it]," Esposito says. Everyone has just simply accepted that he's the villain in Far Cry 6. It's just what makes sense.

However, in a now-deleted article, Gamereactor flat-out states that Esposito's role he teases is, in fact, in the next Far Cry. It's impossible to tell if this is some sort of embargo-breaking declarative or merely hyper-confident editorializing. If it's the latter, why pull the article?

Ubisoft's strategy city-builder The Settlers is delayed until further notice

3 years 10 months ago

In August of last year, Jordan wrote "I'm going to lose so much time to The Settlers." Not anytime soon, he won't!

The newest game in the long-running strategy civilization-building series has been hit with an indefinite delay. Maybe developer Blue Byte couldn't get the right zoning permits, maybe conquering new lands is no easy feat. Regardless, The Settlers isn't settling anytime soon.

The reason for the delay is vague. In an announcement post, Blue Byte just says "While we are on the right path to deliver a great game, we really want to deliver an exceptional gaming experience. Since quality is our main priority, we want to take the time necessary to make it right. Therefore, we had to make the difficult decision to postpone the release of the game until further notice."

This is just the latest setback for a game that was supposed to launch in 2019. That (obviously) didn't happen, and then it was pushed to 2020. With this indefinite delay, it's impossible to tell when -- or even if -- The Settlers will eventually release. For what it's worth, the Epic Games Store lists 2021 as the launch window.

Animal Crossing's diving update has me hooked all over again

3 years 10 months ago

The ocean is fully open for business in Animal Crossing: New Horizons, and if you're the type of player who genuinely enjoys cataloging every last creature (or you just can't seem to help yourself) then you'll want to go for a dip. Today's update added diving and more than three dozen sea creatures to collect.

To go swimming in the ocean, you'll need to grab a wetsuit for 3,000 bells from Nook's Cranny – they're sold from the cabinet containing saplings, flimsy tools, and starter DIY recipes. After you put it on, you can walk up to the shore, press the A button next to the ocean, and continue pressing A to swim.

The area surrounding the island is larger than I was expecting. It's also weird seeing the airport and other spots from alternate angles. Diving is a straightforward activity – be on the lookout for bubbles, and press Y when you're close enough to plunge – but the sea creatures are varied and fun to catalog.

One of the first things I found was a sea slug, which sent me down a Wikipedia rabbit hole to learn more about nudibranchs. Running through the list of critters in July, I have a lot of work ahead of me.

As teased in Nintendo's promo video for this summer update, our old pal Pascal can show up if you pluck a scallop from the seafloor. You can trade with him to get mermaid-themed furniture items. If you're wondering about pearls, you can find them underwater like anything else, but they're rare.

My Friend Pedro to receive TV adaptation from John Wick creator

3 years 10 months ago

The bullet-ballet that is DeadToast Entertainment's My Friend Pedro is set to hit the small screen, as Legendary Entertainment has announced a TV adaptation of the hyper-violent stunt-shooter.

Released by Devolver Digital back in 2019, My Friend Pedro sees a masked amnesiac undertake a night of carnage against the scum of the underworld, guided on his bloodsoaked journey by an irreverent talking banana. Blending run 'n' gun action with meticulous physics, My Friend Pedro is embedded with the spirit of John Woo gunplay, mixing over-the-top acrobatics and environmental damage with a devastating arsenal of weapons and a grim sense of humour.

Expected to be a half-hour series, the TV adaptation is fittingly penned by David Kolstad, writer/creator of the equally explosive John Wick movies. Also on board as an executive producer is David Leitch, who was behind the lens for Deadpool 2 and Atomic Blonde, so some brutal, hard-hitting, and exquisitely choreographed action is guaranteed.

My Friend Pedro is available now on PS4, PC, Xbox One, and Nintendo Switch.

Boys only want one thing and it's Mr. Destructoid dressed as Mona Lisa

3 years 10 months ago

Today, we’re introducing a brand new shirt design to the Destructoid merch store.

Designed by Destructoid community member Triggerpigking, the shirt features our site mascot Mr. Destructoid, but in the style of Leonardo da Vinci’s Mona Lisa.

You might find yourself asking how such a design came into being. A while ago, the folks from our podcast, Podtoid, commissioned him to do the header image for their Twitter profile. An early prototype of the design was featured in the background of the header picture, which we found to be amusing.

Suffice it to say, we just had to commission a full shirt design based off of it.

As with all other designs on our merch store, you can also get it printed on mugs, tote bags, cushions, and other goods! Alongside that, the majority of proceeds go towards the artist, so go show them a bit of love.

On a somewhat related note, we’re also collecting feedback on a brand new shirt based off of our long-standing site motto; “Also Cocks.” Feel free to check out the accompanying forum thread and let us know what you think.

Horizon Zero Dawn Complete Edition arrives on Steam in August: here's the recommended specs

3 years 10 months ago

Back in March, after a longstanding string of rumors, the cat was out of the bag: Horizon Zero Dawn was coming to PC.

Sony says that the move came out of a desire to stay open to "new ideas of how to introduce more people to PlayStation," and follows numerous attempts from other publishers to cross-pollinate their IP; like Nintendo throwing their hat into the mobile ring and Microsoft releasing select games on the Switch. It's also great timing for Horizon in general, as the sequel was confirmed for PS5 recently.

As of today, we now know exactly when the PC port of the first game is coming though: August 7, priced at $49.99. At that time you'll be able to dive into the Aloy's adventure all over again (or for the first time if you're not a PS4 person). The minimum and recommended specs seem to be finalized now, and it won't take a mammoth of a rig to run it.

As a reminder, the "Complete Edition" moniker includes the Frozen Wilds expansion, as well as several other item and outfit packs.

The Tony Hawk's Pro Skater documentary will debut in August

3 years 10 months ago

How timely!

Just as the Tony Hawk's Pro Skater 1+2 remaster is gearing up for release in September, the long-awaited documentary "Pretending I'm a Superman - A Tony Hawk Video Game Story" will debut on August 18.

Premiering at the Mammoth Film Festival in May, D'Amato Productions snatched the film (directed by Ludvig Gür) up for a global release, which will happen digitally on that date. The film managed to snag Tony Hawk as a subject, in addition to Rodney Mullen, Chad Muska, Steve Caballero and Jamie Thomas. The documentary will center around Tony himself, as well as his rise to video game fame throughout the 2000s. It boasts "never seen before" footage with the aforementioned skaters on top of that narrative.

It's crazy to think this is actually happening! I've been following it since Tony announced it in January of 2017.

Fallout 76's next big update hits the public test server next week

3 years 10 months ago

Bethesda literally just dropped Update 20 into Fallout 76 this week, but they're getting ready for the next big patch as early as next week. As announced on their official blog, Update 21 is coming soon, with a layover on the Public Test Server (PTS) as early as next week.

Bethesda says this one isn't coming until August, and will (surprise) contain a ton of bug fixes, among quality of life changes. The publisher also teases a return to the Monongah Mine. As a reminder, the PTS is now literally public, as anyone who accesses Fallout 76 directly on the Bethesda launcher can give it a go.

Update 20 should keep people busy for a while with its public teams and seasonal gimmick, so long as they get their house in order.

Capcom just announced a Mega Man VR game, but of course you can only play it in Japan

3 years 10 months ago

I'm pretty much always thinking about when I'll return to Japan, but these region-exclusive event announcements only make it easier. Revealed this morning on Capcom's official amusement landing page, Mega Man VR will allow players to experience the world of Mega Man 11 through a VR lens.

The big catch —as a lot of these special projects tend to roll with — is that it's exclusive to a physical location in Japan. That location is Capcom's store at Plaza Ikebukuro, a self-described "entertainment plaza" facility that opened in mid-2019. There are no plans to release it on home devices at this time.

Amazingly, there's a cute little story to this VR spinoff (Dr. Wily is trying to hack the VR world, so Mega Man has to fight back with VR tech developed by Dr. Light).  It's confirmed to be a single-player experience, though the event-based multiplayer VR space is still growing.

Capcom says that you can check it out at Plaza Ikebukuro starting on July 18. Demos will run from 10AM JST through 9:45PM JST.

(Update) NBA 2K21 priced at $70 on next-gen consoles: could be the harbinger for an industry-wide price hike

3 years 10 months ago

[Update: This might be the start of something bigger. Speaking to GamesIndustry.biz, research firm IDG Consulting notes that given the last time a price hike occurred was roughly 2005 ($60), we're past due for one. IDG notes that a potential $10 increase will "only" be a 17% hike, compared to a 39% increase for film ticket prices or a 100% increase for Netflix subscriptions. Of course, that figure doesn't take into account all of the extra monetization prospects of games.

IDG says that according to "their channel checks" more publishers are looking at a $70 price point, with the concession that "not every game should garner" that new MSRP. That said, once the floodgates open and the usual suspects (WB, EA, Take-Two) make their move, there's probably no going back.]

A line has been drawn in the sand. Will other publishers follow? Stay tuned, as this coming generation still has a lot of muck to wade through (like you know, the cost of the PS5 and Series X).

As reported by GamesIndustry.biz, NBA 2K21 will sport an MSRP of $69.99 on the PS5 and Xbox Series X: a $10 price increase over the respective PS4 and Xbox One editions. While the current-gen console versions of 2K21 will launch this September, the future generation will get their versions "this holiday season" at that new price.

Evo Online canceled

3 years 10 months ago

Following troubling accusations made against Joey "MrWizard" Cuellar, one of the organizers of the annual Evo fighting game tournament, the organizers of the event announced they are canceling Evo 2020. The move comes after multiple participants, supporters, and commentators dropped out of the show, leading to publishers like NeatherRealm, Capcom, and Bandai Namco pulling their support as well.

Originally, Evo placed Cuellar on administrative leave pending a third-party investigation into the claims made against him. Less than a day later, the organization announced it is parting ways with Cuellar and that Tony Cannon is taking over as CEO.

The cancelation of this year's event looked like an inevitability as the number of participants and partners pulling out of the show grew. Now, Cannon and the rest of the Evo team are going to have to rebuild trust in the fighting game community.

Spiders' next game will surface on July 7 during Nacon Connect

3 years 10 months ago

What's next for Spiders after GreedFall? We'll find out next week during Nacon Connect.

Nacon (the company formerly known as Bigben Interactive) is streaming its first-ever digital conference at 10:00 a.m. Pacific on July 7, and the RPG studio's "next project" is booked for the show.

The more I stare at this teaser image, the less sense it makes to me. I need your insight.

It's easy to overlook GreedFall, but much like Spiders' previous games – and the studio in general – I think it'll hang in there. Budget-minded RPGs with rough, interesting edges have an audience. Also, critically speaking, Spiders has been trending upward. I hope the new project maintains that pace.

As for Nacon Connect, Test Drive Unlimited 3 seems like another surefire guest. It's time.

Halo 3 is getting its own jetpack skull on PC

3 years 10 months ago

When Halo 3 launches on PC as part of the latest Halo: Master Chief Collection addition, it's going come equipped with a modifier that the original Xbox 360 game never had.

In its most recent Master Chief Collection update post, developer 343 Industries explains that it's implementing a jetpack skull into Halo 3. The game's flight just ended, as early invites played and identified bugs and glitches to help the PC port take shape. Along the way, some members of 343 wanted to find a unique way to commemorate the PC launch. So, they gave more meaning to the term "flight."

The video that's embedded above shows the unlockable jetpack ability in action. As 343 explains it, there was trepidation going in because adding a new skull could easily break a million other things. But, it turned out to be the rare (mostly) hassle-free game development story. It seems like jetpacks were introduced without too much extra irritation.

This isn't the first time we've seen jetpacks in Halo. They were originally supposed to be a feature in Halo: Combat Evolved, but Bungie cut them while retaining them as a developer tool. Late, Halo: Reach introduced them for the first time. Now, retroactively, they join Halo 3.

Ultimately, they should have two discernible effects (apart from simply being fun to maneuver). First, jetpacks are going to allow PC players to take some incredible screenshots. And, second -- and this is the Spartan side of my brain speaking -- it's never been easier to get into position for a perfect ambush.

Keep an eye on Paratopic if you're a Switch-owning horror fan

3 years 10 months ago

Steam and itch.io are a haven for small, strange, experimental horror games – look no further than the outstanding Haunted PS1 Demo Disc 2020 project – but it's harder to find these experiences on consoles. Paratopic, an IGF-winning first-person horror adventure, is jumping to Nintendo Switch.

Arbitrary Metric hasn't settled on a release date (it's just "this year" for now), but the custom-made in-engine teaser video is worth watching. I love it when creators get this pumped about Switch ports.

For more on Paratopic – enough to paint the lo-fi horror scene without divulging too much – here's what Ray had to say about the original PC version in 2018. (No surprise here, he dug it.)

Risk of Rain 2 will bump its price by five bucks for the 1.0 launch

3 years 10 months ago

Risk of Rain 2 is worth twenty bucks now, in Early Access, and the roguelike shooter will continue to be worth getting once it reaches 1.0 status and asks for more money. The eventual price? $24.99.

Hopoo Games isn't quite there yet – the most up-to-date launch window for version 1.0 is August 2020 on PC, with the three console versions to follow later this fall – but today's heads-up is appreciated.

Risk of Rain 2 "has grown a tremendous amount, and we think the value of the game is increased," the developers said. The original Risk of Rain was a fan favorite around here, and the sequel has garnered just as much love, if not more. Even if you typically wait for 1.0, it's not too early to start. Genuinely.

Better yet, the game is 20 percent off (knocking it down to $15.99) on Steam right now.

There's a free PS4 theme for the 10th anniversary of PlayStation Plus

3 years 10 months ago

Sony is handing out a free static PS4 theme in honor of PlayStation Plus turning ten years old.

Is yellow your favorite color (or at least a top-three contender)? Do you have an affinity for games like BioShock, Destiny, The Last of Us, Bloodborne, and Nioh? You might dig the doodle-based design.

The "10" in the top-right corner is straight out of Sega's playbook. I can't unsee it.

PlayStation Plus 10th Anniversary themeHere's what I've been playing in between Last of Us Part II sessions. The sequel is Long.

It's tough for this one to stand out when we've had so many killer free themes lately (Final Fantasy VII Remake's Tifa theme immediately comes to mind), but if you want a change of scenery, download away.

Mario Kart Tour hits the beach with new Marine Tour

3 years 10 months ago

It might be the summer, but I'm not about to hit the beach anytime soon, contrary to the en masse irresponsibility being shown by my fellow countryfolk. Still, at least video games are getting into the spirit of Fun in the Sun. Take for example the new Marine Tour, which is now live in Nintendo's mobile racer Mario Kart Tour.

The Marine Tour brings two new driver variants: the lovely Rosalina, adorned in a Grand Star-spangled swimdress, and main man Mario, rocking his swimming gear from Super Mario Odyssey. Also lodged in the pipe system are two new karts, including a Blue Soda kart and a snorkel-wearing Cheep kart, while new gliders are also available, stylised like deep-sea rays.

Epic Games Store is giving out Hue today and three free games next week

3 years 10 months ago

A color-shifting puzzle-platformer called Hue is this week's Epic Games Store freebie, and if that sounds like your sorta "finish in one sitting" jam – it got pretty good reviews, and there's colorblind support if needed – then you'll want to claim the PC game by 8:00 a.m. Pacific on Thursday, July 9. Don't forget!

The other previously-announced free game lined up for this week, Conan Exiles, did an about-face. The dongs will have to wait. According to a tweet from Epic, "the Epic Games Store team has decided that Conan Exiles will not be free, but will be available for purchase on the store at a later date."

On the bright side – assuming plans don't change again – next week's free game lineup includes three titles: Killing Floor 2, The Escapist 2, and Lifeless Planet, a Cold War-tinged astronaut adventure with an intriguing sci-fi premise. You'll be able to claim the trio from July 9 to July 16, 2020.

My backlog is bulking up and I haven't spent a cent.

Beyond a Steel Sky will arrive on PC via Steam July 16

3 years 10 months ago

Revolution Software has announced that Beyond a Steel Sky, the sequel to the 1994 adventure classic Beneath a Steel Sky, will launch on PC via Steam July 16, following its debut on the Apple Arcade platform last week.

Beyond a Steel Sky sees semi-retired problem solver Robert Foster forced out of his quiet wasteland lifestyle and back within the solid steel walls of Union City, on the trail of a missing child that was snatched from his enclave for mysterious reasons. Although the high-tech metropolis looks a helluva lot cleaner and happier than Foster remains, our hero will soon learn how beauty is often only skin deep, as he becomes embroiled in another technological nightmare of conspiracy and greed.

3 years 10 months ago

It's a port-filled week for the Switch, as Nintendo eyes mid-July for their big release: Paper Mario: The Origami King. The big port this week is easily Catherine: Full Body, which itself is a 2019 re-release of a 2011 game. Full Body will be available on July 7 and we'll have Switch impressions for you soon. Isn't that great?!

Superliminal is also coming to Switch, alongside of Vigor, a free-to-play loot-based game.

Cyberpunk 2077 scrapped its wall-running mechanic

3 years 10 months ago

While it's definitely safe to say that Cyberpunk 2077 looks like a veritable banquet of gameplay features - including firefights, vehicular chaos, character customisation, dialogue trees, and many other popular mechanics  - it seems that one previously planned element has fallen by the wayside: wall-running.

Speaking in an interview with Game Reactor, CD Projekt RED's Max Pears noted that while anti-gravity parkour action was definitely on the drawing board, it was ultimately decided that wall-running just didn't work within Night City's infrastructure. "Ah, the wall running," Pears explained when asked about the missing feature. "That is something that we removed due to design reasons, but there's still going to be a lot of flexibility in how you move, that's for sure."

Personally, I can live without it. Given the suffocating structure of Night City and its many interior locations, I would imagine that wall-running - though undeniably badass - might be hindered by Cyberpunk's general approach to high-detail environments. Games such as Mirror's Edge Catalyst and Titanfall 2, designed around wide-open spaces, rooftops, and roomy interiors, are custom-built for such shenanigans. But grungy dive bars, office block interiors and signpost-filled alleyways? Perhaps not so much.

Cyberpunk 2077 launches November 19 on PS4, PC, Xbox One, and Stadia.

This roguelike Dark Souls mod randomizes enemies and bosses

3 years 10 months ago

I know what you're thinking: a Dark Souls roguelike? That can go to hell! But hear me out.

Maybe you've played Dark Souls....oh I don't know, 20 times by now. You've memorized everything from enemy placements to boss strategies. You know that by the time you hit [x] boss you have [x] item so you're all good. This mod from Grimrukh changes all that and encourages randomized replays. That kind of rules.

The gist is that the mod turns the game into a roguelike experience, akin to Binding of Isaac or Dead Cells, in the words of its creator. Grimrukh says they completely altered enemy placements (as in, they aren't just random models, but are in random locations that may not exist in From Software's core game), as well as loot tables and even randomized bosses.

Rescued allies will join you at the shrine to provide bonuses. You also need to run this gauntlet before you die five times: at which point you will lose your progress entirely and teleport back to Firelink Shrine on a fresh run. To be frank it's like it's an entirely new game. And that's the best part about an optional mod: if this sounds really stupid to you, you don't have to download it.

I'm utterly intrigued, however. Dark Souls has had its fair share of randomization mods, but this total conversion package is a way simpler way to aggregate it all.
