The Long Dark Removed From GeForce Now Because Nvidia Didn't Have Permission

4 years 2 months ago

Hinterland Studio, the developer behind survival game The Long Dark, has pulled its game from Nvidia GeForce Now because the streaming service never asked for the studio's permission to host it in the first place. The Long Dark is just the latest game to be removed from the service.

Game director Raphael van Lierop explained the decision on Twitter, saying, "Sorry to those who are disappointed you can no longer play The Long Dark on GeForce Now. Nvidia didn't ask for our permission to put the game on the platform so we asked them to remove it. Please take your complaints to them, not us. Devs should control where their games exist.

Half-Life: Alyx's New Gameplay Videos Show Tons Of Environments And Enemies

4 years 2 months ago

Half-Life: Alyx will be the first game in the series in more than 10 years, and as a result anticipation is high for the VR-only game. Valve has released a trio of gameplay videos to prepare players for what they'll find when it releases on March 23.

The trio of trailers show a variety of environments, lots of dialogue, and some enemy encounters. One aspect that's particularly notable is the fine motor control for Alyx's hands, which is a feature used to show the manipulation of pretty fine motor controls. That's one advantage of the VR controls that isn't quite analogous to a standard controller or keyboard and mouse setup.

Valve only recently announced the release date, and the game is still offered at a 10% discount pre-order price through the Steam page. We knew it would be coming in March, and the company had said it didn't expect delays since the game was essentially already finished. As the name suggests, this is a full-Half-Life game starring the popular character Alyx Vance, set between the events of Half-Life and Half-Life 2.

The Division 2 Patch Notes Are Here For The New Warlords Expansion

4 years 2 months ago

The Division 2's newest DLC expansion, Warlords of New York, arrived earlier than expected on PC, PlayStation 4, Stadia, and Xbox One. With the sudden launch of the looter-shooter's first major piece of DLC, Ubisoft has shared a long list of changes coming to all platforms. You can check out the full patch notes below.

Of course, the main draw of the Warlords of New York expansion is the return trip to the Big Apple. Warlords of New York opens up several locations within the city for you to explore, including Battery Park and the Financial District. As you're combing these added areas, you can take on some new main missions that task you with hunting down rogue Division agent and first wave responder Aaron Keener. There are also new side missions to undertake, a level cap increase from 30 to 40, an additional base of operations, and more.

The new locale and mission objectives aren't the only additions in Warlords of New York. The new update also reworks all weapons in what Ubisoft is calling "gear 2.0." There are only a handful of attributes now, with all brand bonuses, talents, mods, gear sets, exotics, and skills being overhauled. Also, loot drops have been reduced and will now scale "more strongly with difficulty," according to the patch notes.

The Division 2 Warlords of New York Expansion Has Arrived Early, Go Get It Now

4 years 2 months ago

Ubisoft's shooter-looter The Division 2 was set to get its new Warlords of New York expansion this week, starting on Tuesday, March 3. But it appears Ubisoft pushed the launch-button early, setting the expansion live already. You can jump in and start exploring the new area of Manhattan now--check out the full patch notes here.

The expansion costs $30, and adds a completely new area of New York City that had previously gone unexplored in the first game. It does touch on some of the old game's factions, though, and sets the stage for the year ahead in the ongoing story. Aside from the new story content, it also adds a revised gear and power growth system, and raises the level cap to 40. That will give you plenty to do in the Washington DC setting as well.

Though the new story content takes place after the main campaign story, you can jump into it right away, even if you're a newcomer. In a recent hands-on, we were able to explore Lower Manhattan, including Battery Park, Twin Bridges, Civic Center, and the Financial District.

Pokemon Go March 2020 Field Research Tasks

4 years 2 months ago

March is officially underway, and there are a ton of events lined up for Pokemon Go this month, including the debut of the Legendary Thundurus. A new month also means a new set of Field Research tasks, and if you can complete enough of them, you'll earn an encounter with another new Gen 5 Pokemon.

As usual, Field Research tasks are distributed via Poke Stops. You'll receive a task when you spin the Photo Disc, and each one you complete will net you rewards, which can range from helpful items like Poke Balls and berries to encounters with certain Pokemon.

On top of that, the first Field Research task you complete each day will net you a stamp. If you amass seven stamps, you'll achieve a Research Breakthrough, which will net you additional rewards, including an encounter with a special Pokemon. This month's Research Breakthrough reward is Ferroseed, a Steel/Grass type originally introduced in Pokemon Black and White. Ferroseed's evolved form, Ferrothorn, is a great Pokemon to have for PvP battles, so you'll want to catch as many as you can this month.

Monster Hunter World Is Introducing Two New Monsters This Month

4 years 2 months ago

You might've already hacked your way through all of the fearsome beasts in Monster Hunter World and its massive Iceborne expansion, but you're not quite done just yet. Early in February, Capcom announced that a pair of new monsters are coming to the game in March: Raging Brachydios and Furious Rajang. Now the studio has set a firm release date for their arrival, with both coming to the PlayStation 4 and Xbox One on March 23, and on PC sometime in April.

Both monsters are more challenging variants of foes that already appear in Iceborne and previously made their debuts in past Monster Hunter games. Raging Brachydios is an infernal dinosaur-esque beast who enjoys coating the ground in flames and lava while pounding you to dust you with its smouldering fists. Furious Rajang, meanwhile, is an electrified ape with terrifying horns and a similar predilection for smashing you into the ground.

Apex Legends System Override Event Patch Notes Revealed

4 years 2 months ago

Ahead of Apex Legends' upcoming System Override Collection Event--which runs from March 3-17 on PC, PlayStation 4, and Xbox One--EA and Respawn Entertainment have revealed the official patch notes for the limited-time event, which you can check out below.

The update's headlining feature is Deja Loot, a "unique take" on the traditional battle royale experience. Here, all loot spawns in the same location during the event, allowing you to chart the best path to your favorite weapon in the hopes of getting that win. But because loot remains static in this game mode, everyone else will likely be vying for the same gear. While most of everything will stay the same, the plane path and circle locations will change on a daily basis. Deja Loot's first week will be on World's Edge, while the second week takes you back to Kings Canyon.

Along with the introduction of Deja Loot is a new equipment type. The Evo Shield is weaker than common body shields but progressively grows stronger as you damage non-downed players. The stacks carry over from person to person, so it's possible you could pick up your buddy's fully-charged Evo Shield--and drop just as quickly for an enemy to prosper with. For the moment, Evo Shields are exclusive to Deja Loot and spawn at high frequencies, but Respawn may add them to all match types after the System Override Collection Event ends.

Uncharted Movie Casts Antonio Banderas

4 years 2 months ago

Antonio Banderas has joined the latest incarnation of the long-in-production Uncharted movie project, according to a report from Variety. He will appear alongside Tom Holland and Mark Wahlberg, who are reportedly set to star as treasure hunter Nathan Drake and his mentor Victor "Sully" Sullivan respectively.

The film will be directed by Ruben Fleischer, who is best-known for helming 2009's Zombieland and the recent Venom. It's unclear what role Banderas will play. The actor recently received his first Oscar nomination at the latest Academy Awards, for his role in Pain and Glory.

The Uncharted movie has languished in one form of production or another for many years, losing several noted directors in the process, including David O. Russell (American Hustle) and Shawn Levy (Night at the Museum). Travis Knight (Bumblebee) was the most recent director tapped for the project, but he left due to a scheduling conflict involving Holland's role as the MCU's Spider-Man. According to an interview with Holland, the film will begin shooting in 2-3 weeks.

Last Chance To Grab The Division 2 For $3 Before Warlords Of New York Arrives

4 years 2 months ago

Tom Clancy's The Division 2 features a ton of content, both story-related and endgame, and it was a good value at its full $60 launch price. Until tomorrow, however, you can get the game for a ridiculous $3.

The deal is available across the PlayStation Store and Xbox Live, as well as on PC through both Uplay and the Epic Games Store. It will remain live until March 3 at 8 AM PT / 11 AM ET, at which point the game will jump back up to its standard price. Physical copies can also be found at retailers at huge discounts, though not as low as $3.

The Division 2's low price is even more impressive because the game's post-launch DLC has been free for all players. The game has been continuously updated with more story content and missions, and ditched the season pass model used by the original game.

Riot's Next Game, Valorant, Is A Tactial Shooter

Riot, the creator of League of Legends, will be releasing a new 5v5 tactical shooter game titled Valorant. Gunplay is a big part of it, and your technical abilities to shoot precisely will matter a lot. The twist though, is that each character, called "Agents," will also have special powers and abilities, so winning will depend on a combination of precise shooting, a creative usage of powers, and of course, teamwork.

Riot's aiming for a summer release according to the tweet above. It'll also only be available on PC and will be free-to-play.

Like many people have commented, the game's vibes are a combination of Overwatch and Counter-Strike. It remains to be seen if the full gameplay turns out that way. You can check out the game's developers playing an internal version below.

Baldur's Gate 3 Screenshots Show D&D Adventure In Action

4 years 2 months ago

Baldur's Gate 3 had its first gameplay reveal at PAX East, and Larian Studio has marked the announcement with a huge batch of screenshots showing the Dungeons & Dragons adventure.

Larian Studios has talked about taking on the Baldur's Gate legacy, including some of its own changes. It's using a turn-based combat system instead of real-time, which it says simply made sense for this game. It will also allow you to romance any companion, but other characters will also be pursuing their own romantic interests.

Baldur's Gate 3 will use the Divinity 4.0 engine, built on the work Larian did for Divinity Original Sin and Divinity Original Sin 2. Those games were highly-regarded in their own right and helped cement the studio as the one to take on the Baldur's Gate franchise. Divinity Original Sin 2 is one of only a handful of games to have been awarded a 10/10 review from GameSpot.

Final Fantasy 7 Remake Preview -- First 3 Hours, Tifa And Aerith Combat, And More

4 years 2 months ago

Seeing the reimagined opening of Final Fantasy VII Remake for the first time really is something special, if the original is something you're familiar with. The establishing shots of Midgar, the train, the first couple of battles--there's definitely an unavoidable nostalgia, no matter how reserved and wary you're trying to be. I'd certainly been very skeptical about how Remake was going to turn out, and that's partially on me--I generally avoid watching pre-release coverage of things I know I want to experience myself. But after getting the chance to spend somewhere between three and four hours playing the first two chapters and some mid-game stuff, I'm feeling much better about letting myself be very excited about Remake's impending release.

You're likely already aware that Square Enix is blowing out the Final Fantasy VII saga to encompass multiple releases. The first part is set solely in the corporate-owned slums of Midgar, and will extrapolate greatly on the beats of the original. Having started a replay of the PS1 FF7 shortly before I dove into the Remake demo, it's a little shocking how much more detailed the new game feels. The original Final Fantasy VII was in no way a small or unambitious game, but if I were to imagine the same kind of treatment being given to the rest of VII--well, I hope I live to see it all happen.

Final Fantasy 7 Remake Devs Want The Saga To Live On For Generations

4 years 2 months ago

Until Final Fantasy VII Remake was officially announced in 2015, the frenzied fans that had been whipped up by a reimagining of the game's opening, shown a decade earlier, had basically lost all hope that it was ever going to get off the ground. But developers at Square Enix had been working on it all along. Key members of the original game's development team, including director/scenario writer Yoshinori Kitase, character designer Tetsuya Nomura, and Kazushige Nojima, also a scenario writer, were trying to get the ball rolling on the project for a long time. But other Final Fantasy projects, as well as the limits of console tech, were always a roadblock in making sure Square Enix had the right team to successfully revive and reinvent one of the most iconic games of all time.

Yoshinori Kitase, now a producer on Final Fantasy VII Remake, told GameSpot that even before the team started production on the original Final Fantasy VII, they strived for the already-popular series to both do more ambitious things and reach a broader audience than before. "When we finished doing Final Fantasy VI and moved to start work on Final Fantasy VII, there was that idea in our heads that we wanted to go outside of Japan for this game," Kitase reminisced, through a translator. "I don't think we had the expectation that it was going to be as big as it was in the end (Final Fantasy VII remains the series' best-performing entry with over 12.3 million units sold) but we did have that passion to make this go out to the world--rather than VI, which was a much more domestic-focused title."

Dead Or Alive 6 Will Let You Change Hair Colors On PS4--For A Price

4 years 2 months ago

The 1.20 update of Dead or Alive 6 will allow PS4 players to change characters' hair color for the first time, though each change will use a Premium Ticket at a cost of $1 each.

As picked up by Kotaku, the update was initially welcomed by the community, until players realized that previously purchased colors would not remain unlocked once paid for.

This update works more like a real-life hair salon, charging a fee every time you change your hair--even if it's a color you had before. Dead Or Alive community forum Free Step Dodge reached out to Team Ninja to confirm the system was working as planned and the repeated payments were not a bug, which the team then confirmed.

Bethesda Admits It Thought More Fallout 76 Players Would Just Want To Murder Each Other

4 years 2 months ago

As the release date for massive Fallout 76 update Wastelanders draws nearer, Pete Hines has shared some of the thinking that went into the original game design in an interview with USGamer.

One of the elements Hines says was misjudged by the team in particular was PVP, and how it was not as much of a priority for players as they had initially thought.

"We were a little surprised how few people wanted to take part in PvP and how many more they were interested in PvE together," Hines said. "As opposed to, 'I want to test my mettle against you and let's get into a duel.'"

Halo Developer Reveals A Great New Feature Coming To Halo: CE In The Master Chief Collection

4 years 2 months ago

Halo: The Master Chief Collection continues to expand and improve with new updates, including a substantial upgrade to the audio design of one game in the collection. Currently, Halo: Combat Evolved Anniversary supports only the updated audio for multiplayer, not the classic sounds. This has bugged some players, and 343 Industries has now confirmed it will add the classic Halo: CE sounds to multiplayer soon.

The option to hear the original Halo: CE sounds is available in the campaign on PC (which is currently in testing) and on Xbox, but only the updated audio for multiplayer is available.

"We are happy to announce that we are now putting the final polish on bringing the classic Halo: CE multiplayer sounds to the Halo: CE PC launch," 343 said in a blog post. "Initial playtest feedback is that players are happy to have the original audio in place, which brings the overall Halo: CE multiplayer another step closer to the way we all remember it on the original Xbox."

Rainbow Six Siege Has Toned Down Ela In Its Latest Test Server Patch

4 years 2 months ago

Ela, an Operator added in Rainbow Six Siege's second year, is getting powered down a bit. Ubisoft has outlined the patch notes for the latest update done on the game's Public Test Server, which will test out a slightly modified version of Ela's Scorpion EVo3 gun.

Here are the four changes made to Ela in this patch.

  • Reduced recoil now only applies to the first 11 bullets.
  • Increased resettle time after burst firing
  • Faster uptime to increase vertical recoil
  • Slightly increased recoil + spread

As the post says, since Ela was buffed in a recent Year 4 Season 4.3 patch, there's been a huge spike in her being picked, and her win ratio has gone up a little too much. These changes will make her slightly less deadly, and give players a better sense of balance.

Call Of Duty: Mobile Gets Huge Update With New Battle Pass, Map, Character, And More

4 years 2 months ago

It's a big week for Call of Duty: Mobile, as the game's newest season has begun, ushering in a new Battle Pass, along with a new map and character.

Starting with the new character, John "Soap" MacTavish has been added to the game, and the only way to get him is through the new battle pass, which is called "Rise of Soap." There is also a new scorestreak called H.I.V.E. This streak grants players a weapon that shoots proximity mines that, when triggered, release a bunch of "nano drones" that kill enemies in the area.

The new multiplayer map is called Cage, and it's available now in all ranked modes. The close-quarters map is noteworthy because it's the first map in Call of Duty Mobile that was made specifically for the game. The rest are borrowed from the console/PC games.

Counter-Strike: Global Offensive Has Broken its Own Concurrent Player Count Record Again

4 years 2 months ago

Counter-Strike: Global Offensive first released in 2012, but in 2020 it's had more players than ever. The game, which hit a peak player count of 901,000 in February 2020, has now gone even further. As reported by PCGamesN, tracking site Steamcharts recorded a peak player figure of 924,045 on Sunday, March 1.

Steam's own figures put it even higher--the 24 hour peak count, as of right now, is at 925,990.

The game went free-to-play in December 2018, which seems to have led to a steady growth for the title. The rise of streaming, esports, and the fact that the game receives regular patches and updates have also all contributed to its growth.

The IEM Katowice esports tournament over the weekend of February 28-March 1 likely boosted the game's player numbers, too--the CS:GO tournament had a $500,000 prize pool.

The new season will be known as the Season of the Forbidden Archives, and will have a lore focus on Kanai's Cube, as well as "the equally celebrated and reviled Horadrim, Zoltun Kulle," who will help you tap into some tremendous powers.

During Season 20, you'll be able to equip three additional Legendary powers into the slots of Kanai's Cube, with no category restrictions for what you can do. The seasonal cosmetic rewards will be the same ones that players got their hands on back in Season 8, many years ago. They're pictured below.

Trackmania Nations Is Being Remade As A Live Service Game

4 years 2 months ago

Trackmania is returning with a remake of Trackmania Nations, the free-to-play sequel from 2006. The new game, announced during the Trackmania Grand League Finals in Lyon, France, will include a season campaign and will operate as a live service game, rotating which tracks are available each day.

The Trackmania series is built around wild track designs, with plenty of loops, corkscrews, and jumps, as well as the ability for players to create and distribute their own tracks. The Trackmania Nations remake will include new blocks and surfaces to build with.

Ubisoft has published an interview with Florent Castelnerac, the managing director at developer Ubisoft Nadeo, where he delves into the project further. He says that the series has lost some of its simplicity over time, and he would "like to combine depth, beauty, and lightness" for this new release. Gearbox, Amazon Join List Of GDC Drop Outs Amid Coronavirus Concerns

4 years 2 months ago

The Games Developer Conference (GDC) is in a bit of an unprecedented situation this year, as a growing list of companies announce that they won't be attending amidst coronavirus concerns. A majority of the list is composed of large tech companies or triple-A game developers and publishers, which has left indie devs and journalists wondering if GDC is even still happening this year.

For now, GDC has been delayed to Summer 2020 and organizers are working to implement precautionary measures in order to hopefully diminish the chances of attendees getting sick. In a blog post, organizers have said that GDC details will be finalized "in the coming weeks" so we may not have to wait very long to get new event dates.

GDC 2020 Postponed Due To Coronavirus Following Numerous Dropouts

4 years 2 months ago

Recent weeks have seen numerous companies from the games industry--both big and small--drop out of this year's Game Developers Conference. This all stems from concerns related to COVID-19, more commonly known as the coronavirus, sparking speculation that the event itself could be canceled. Although the event hasn't been canceled, less than three weeks before it was scheduled to begin, GDC 2020 has officially been postponed and will now take place "later in the summer." A more specific date has not been revealed.

"After close consultation with our partners in the game development industry and community around the world, we’ve made the difficult decision to postpone the Game Developers Conference this March," a statement on the GDC website reads.

"Having spent the past year preparing for the show with our advisory boards, speakers, exhibitors, and event partners, we're genuinely upset and disappointed not to be able to host you at this time.

Game Release Dates Of March 2020: Switch, PS4, PC, And Xbox One

4 years 2 months ago

While the first two months of 2020 have seen a few big-name games hit the market, this year has gotten off to a fairly quiet start, largely due to the spate of delays that were recently announced. That's all about to change in March, however--in fact, it's shaping up to be one of the most ridiculous March release schedules of all time. This month features a variety of highly anticipated releases for every platform, from the arrival of Animal Crossing: New Horizons to the long-awaited return of the Half-Life series.

Those aren't the only major titles coming out this month. Nioh 2, the sequel to Team Ninja's popular Dark Souls-inspired samurai game, will launch on March 13, while Ninja Theory's PvP brawler, Bleeding Edge, lands on March 24. Capping off the month is Persona 5 Royal, an expanded version of one of 2017's best games.

That's only a small taste of this month's releases. To give you a look at what lays ahead for PS4, Xbox One, PC, and Switch, we've rounded up all the biggest games of March 2020 below. For a wider look at the titles still to come this year, be sure to check out our list of game release dates in 2020.

The Animal Crossing: New Horizons Booth Is The Best Thing At PAX East

4 years 2 months ago

It's always exciting to see how companies showcase their games at conventions, especially Nintendo, which tends to go all-out. At PAX East 2020, Animal Crossing: New Horizons is the game of the show for Nintendo and the booth is basically a bite-sized recreation of the island getaway. There's a little tent for your starting house, a flowing river, a campfire, a workbench, some forestry in the backdrop, and the rocks that look out to the ocean.

Fans are able to walk around and take pictures, and we had a chance to hang out at the booth ourselves. If you're lucky, you could catch Tom Nook, K.K. Slider, or Isabelle roaming around the booth space and get a picture with them, too. You can get a view of the booth from the show floor in a short video from my tweet on location:

Not only did we get to relax at Tom Nook's makeshift island getaway on the PAX East show floor, we also got a 20-minutes hands-on experience with Animal Crossing: New Horizons at the booth, too. You can check out our gameplay video below, which features four-player co-op, the new expansive museum, some of the fashion options at Able Sisters, and a bit more of the island itself. The audio quality is also very good, so you can listen to the catchy, relaxing Animal Crossing tunes.

This Apex Legends Heirloom Tells A Sad Story For Octane

4 years 2 months ago

Octane is such an adrenaline junkie. Granted, that's his entire schtick--we've known this about the Apex Legends character since his introduction in Season 1: Wild Frontier. The dude blew off his own legs in order to gain the necessary boost of speed to beat the Gauntlet record after all. But the speed demon's heirloom takes Octavio "Octane" Silva's obsession with chasing the high to new extremes and acts as a reminder that the adrenaline junkie's backstory is a sad one.

Coming to Apex Legends next week, during the System Override Collection event, Octane's heirloom is a butterfly knife. This isn't an ordinary blade though--the knife is filled with Stim, the drug that Octane uses to achieve his enhanced speed. And so Octane has customized the butterfly knife so that it can be used to both slash opponents and inject the drug into his own body.

While inspecting the heirloom, as seen in the video on the Apex Legends blog, Octane will dangerously twirl the butterfly knife around and then stab himself with its plunger to get the Stim into his system. He'll stab himself just because. He doesn't go on to use the drug to run faster either--Octane just celebrates the rush of the Stim coursing through his veins.

Predator: Hunting Grounds To Get A Trial Weekend In March On PS4 And PC

4 years 2 months ago

Developer Illfonic is running a trial weekend for its upcoming asymmetrical multiplayer shooter, Predator: Hunting Grounds. The trial kicks off on March 27 and runs through March 29, and will be open to Epic Games Store players and PS Plus members on PlayStation 4. There's also cross-play support.

The trial will be available to download on March 27 at 5 PM PT / 8 PM ET / 4 PM GMT. You'll be able to play solo as the Predator, or team up online with three others as part of a human Fireteam.

Late last year, Illfonic revealed some details about the various Predator classes you'll be able to play as in Hunting Grounds, including some of the deadly weapons you'll wield as the galaxy's premier killing machine. Now, the studio behind 2017's Friday the 13th has shed some light on what it's like to play as a gun-toting human.

Amnesia And SOMA Dev Continues To Tease Its Next Game With Another Cryptic Video

4 years 2 months ago

Back in January, developer Frictional Games--the studio behind horror titles Amnesia: The Dark Descent and SOMA--began teasing its next game with an abstract ARG. The studio's official website links to a page for "Next Frictional Game," which previously displayed little more than a pulsating white object that has now evolved into a pulsating white fetus.

This was accompanied by two unlisted teaser videos uploaded to Frictional's YouTube channel. Fans have combed through the two cryptic videos and compiled a list of all the possible ideas and theories they have on a Google Doc found on the Frictional Games Discord. Now, the studio has released another unlisted teaser simply titled "I am Tasi." Like the first two videos, this one doesn't show much beyond what appears to be a (possibly alien) desert landscape. The frantic character voiceover reiterates that "I am still Tasi," which certainly lends itself to the physiological horror the studio is known for.
