Pokemon Go is turning 1,000 small businesses into PokeStops and Gyms

Globally, a ton of small, local businesses have been hit hard by the COVID-19 pandemic. With everyone staying home, nonessential stores forced to close, and rent due every 30 days, a lot of shop owners have found themselves in tough financial positions. Pokémon Go developer Niantic is doing its part to help.

Dubbed the Niantic Local Business Recovery Initiative, Pokémon Go is turning 1,000 small businesses into PokéStops and Gyms across Canada, Great Britain, Japan, Mexico, and the United States for a year. The idea is that an influx of players will result in an uptick in business -- something a lot of these stores could sorely use right now. It sounds perfect for the boba tea joint you love or the card and board game shop you spend your Friday nights at.

If you know of a business that you hold near and dear, give them some extra support by nominating them for this venture. Here's the link to start the nomination process. Then, post up at the Gym sippin' some coffee and crush every Pokémon until it's completely demotivated -- that's the sort of patronage that will keep small businesses motivated through these lean times.
