8 months 2 weeks ago

Bishoujo Transformers Starscream

The latest figure in Kotobukiya's Bishoujo Transformers line is Starscream, and she is now available to pre-order. The figure will cost ¥18,700 or $180, depending on which store you order from. Shipping is set for April 2024 for orders from Japan. It will ship between May and July 2024 worldwide if ordered from Sideshow.

Originally announced in July 2023, with a painted prototype shown off earlier in August 2023, the Bishoujo Transformers Starscream figure was sculpted by Tsubame with design work by Shunya Yamashita. She stands at 8.46" tall upon a stand shaped like the Decepticon logo. Her wings are reimagined as an over-the-shoulder gym bag with a Decepticon keychain. While the figure is not poseable, deluxe orders from the Kotobukiya store come with an additional faceplate with a pleading expression.

There's a video showing it from different angles.

Starfield Is More Like A Sci-Fi Theme Park Than An Open World Adventure

8 months 2 weeks ago

Starfield Xbox Series X The Elder Scrolls V Skyrim Fallout Bethesda Game Studios Softworks Opinion Impressions

Starfield is finally here after a long five-year wait, and it's great! I’m roughly 23 hours in, so I still have many galaxies ahead of me, but read Game Informer’s Starfield review for in-depth thoughts on the overall package. With years of build-up and anticipation, I, like many Bethesda Game Studios fans, let my imagination run wild with what this new open world RPG could be. Now that I’ve played a decent chunk of it, it’s quite different from the studios’ Elder Scrolls and Fallout series in some ways. Those two franchises are significantly more open world than Starfield. In fact, Starfield feels more like a great sci-fi theme park with exciting points of interests rather than an open world adventure. But players looking for a replica space-based Fallout or Elder Scrolls adventure might find disappointment amongst the stars.

Embracer close Volition, developer of Red Faction and Saints Row

8 months 2 weeks ago

Embracer Group have announced that they're closing down Volition, the Illinois, US-based developer best known today for Saints Row and Red Faction. The announcement - which coincided with the predictably uproarious lifting of Starfield's review embargo, though I'm sure the timing is purely accidental - comes as part of broader restructuring at Embracer Group following a multiple-year acquisition spree, which Alice0 reported on in June.

The 10 Coolest Games We Saw During the MIX Next Showcase 2023

8 months 2 weeks ago

The MIX Next Showcase has returned for 2023 and featured a ton of games set to be released this year and beyond. While many of the games looked great, we wanted to highlight 10 of the coolest games we saw during the show. From brand new Rugrats and G.I. Joe games to a wholesome game about animals playing soccer to one about dungeon crawling and running a restaurant and more, there was seemingly something for everyone.

You can check out our thoughts on those 10 games below, and head even further down to see all the rest of the games featured in this latest MIX Next Showcase and most of their accompanying trailers!

Rugrats: Adventures in Gameland

Nickelodeon's Rugrats are back in an "all-new old-school adventure" that stars Tommy, Chuckie, Phil, and Lil. The action unfolds as a 2D platformer in the style of an NES game, but there is also an option to play in an HD mode that more matches the classic cartoon.

The game tells a story of the babies seeing a commercial for a new Reptar video game and then using their imagination to jump in one. Each baby has a different stat for Jump and Lift, and the trailer shows a ton of cameos from the show, including Tommy's dad Stu and his grandpa Lou.

Rugrats: Adventures in Gameland, which will also feature 2-player co-op, will be released on PC and consoles in 2024.

Starfield Turns Out to Run Just Fine on Xbox Series S Amid Question About Console's Power

8 months 2 weeks ago

Starfield's reviews are here, and the internet is full of takes, impressions, and everything in between. If you are curious how Bethesda's latest single-player RPG fares on the Xbox Series S, you should be happy to know the console can run the game just fine.

In our Performance Review for Starfield, we tested all three versions of Starfield. Like the Xbox Series X version, the Series S version of Starfield is locked at 30 frames per second, and for the most part, it holds that framerate consistently.

"The Series S delivers almost identical performance rate and shows the team worked hard to ensure the console did not suffer over its bigger brother," Michael Thompson said in the video.

However, there are some issues with the Series S version, but nothing major. We note in the video that both console versions do encounter some issues with stuttering, such as in combat and when exploring bigger cities. Nevertheless, our reviewer noted that it is brief and drops the FPS to mid-20s "at worst." He did point out that the streaming and loading stutter was "slightly" worse in Series S than Series X, but nothing that would make it unplayable.

Since the Series S was released in 2020, there has always been a conversation on the compatibility of the Series S and whether this console would hold back developers making games on Series X. While the lower visual quality is the big difference between the two.

Takashi Tezuka and Shiro Mouri Reveal Super Mario Bros. Wonder's Origin Story

8 months 2 weeks ago

I’ve had the privilege of interviewing hundreds of game developers in my career, but never before had I had the chance to sit down with two leads on an internally developed mainline Mario game. Nintendo, as a company, doesn’t often put them forward, usually preferring to let the games speak for themselves. But such was the privilege I had in New York City, where I sat down with Super Mario Bros. Wonder game director Shiro Mouri and producer Takashi Tezuka.

Mouri has been with Nintendo since 1997. He directed New Super Mario Bros. U for the Switch and served as a programmer on two Zelda games for the DS — Phantom Hourglass and Spirit Tracks — as well as The Legend of Zelda: A Link Between Worlds for the 3DS.

Tezuka, meanwhile, started at Nintendo in 1984 and has the legendary resume to go with it, working as a game designer on the original Super Mario Bros., The Legend of Zelda, and The Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Past before eventually moving solely into production. He has a producer credit on hallmark Nintendo classics from the original Animal Crossing to both Super Mario Maker games.

Given the talent and experience in the room with me, it was a rare opportunity to hear about how the breadth of wisdom accrued by these two developers over many decades serves Nintendo’s new flagship 2D Mario game, which I played for an hour and previewed for IGN today. I started by asking Tezuka-san how he thinks about nostalgia and its inevitable effect on some Super Mario Bros. Wonder players, when he himself helped create that nostalgia? Is it a good thing or is it a problem as you build the game?

Super Mario Bros. Wonder: The First Preview

8 months 2 weeks ago

Super Mario Bros. Wonder is, by Nintendo’s own admission during a presentation prior to my one-hour hands-on, the first major new 2D Mario game in a decade. It captures the same joyousness as the original NES trilogy did, and it surprises in its own unique ways too, thanks to the Wonder seeds that anchor the gameplay. It also exhibits Nintendo’s biggest commitment to multiplayer – yes, including online multiplayer – in the history of any Mario game, 2D or 3D. Even the small piece I got to experience has me ready to put aside every other one of the many, many big blockbuster games due out in October alongside Wonder so that I can focus on Nintendo’s latest Super Mario adventure.

The first thing I have to say isn’t news to you if you’ve watched the first Wonder trailer (see below), but the first thing that makes the latest mainline SMB game so captivating is how alive it feels. The vivid color palette, the constant animations Mario has going on – both big and small – and of course the music all bring a kinetic energy to this new Mario adventure that simply brought a smile to my face as I played. The fact that this is the Flower Kingdom rather than the Mushroom Kingdom also adds to the welcome visual uniqueness of Wonder.

Super Mario Bros. Wonder Director: Online Multiplayer Had to Be ‘Stress-Free’ for Players

8 months 2 weeks ago

Multiplayer and Nintendo – and particularly Mario and multiplayer – have generally not been synonymous with one another. But in Super Mario Bros. Wonder, up to four of you can play online together (with a limit of two per console) and up to 12 people can be in a Friend Room, breaking off in groups of four to go play stages. I sat down with Wonder director Shiro Mouri to ask about the influence of multiplayer on the new 2D Mario game’s design.

“So first of all, we didn’t design the game such that it should be played in multiplayer or that it should be played in single-player,” Mouri began.

“We designed it such that it’s enjoyable for both types of play. And what we wanted to make sure we do is that it’s up to the player whether they want to play single-player or local multiplayer or online multiplayer. What we really made sure to do and kept in mind from a game design perspective is to avoid making courses or areas where it’s best enjoyed in multiplayer or best enjoyed in single-player. We kept in mind to make everything such that it’s enjoyable however you play it.

“The fact that you can select all 12 characters freely or the fact that you can go to any of the courses within a world freely, those are meant to be such that whether you’re playing single-player or multiplayer you can enjoy them to the full extent. And what we wanted to make sure we do this time with the concept of multiplayer is whether it’s online or local multiplayer that we provide a stress-free environment and experience.

But what does “stress-free” mean?

Shigeru Miyamoto Didn’t Like Elephant Mario’s Original Design in Super Mario Bros. Wonder

8 months 2 weeks ago

By all accounts, Nintendo game design legend Shigeru Miyamoto is a polite, kind person. Nevertheless, when I had the rare opportunity to interview two leads on Nintendo’s upcoming new flagship 2D Mario game, Super Mario Bros. Wonder, I had to know: what notes does Miyamoto – the guy that created Mario and the lion’s share of my generation’s best childhood gaming memories – give to the Wonder development team?

Director Shiro Mouri and producer Takashi Tezuka gave an honest, insightful answer into Miyamoto’s role in the process. “With Wonder in particular, it wasn’t like Mr. Miyamoto was in our hip pocket during this whole time whispering in our ears or anything like that,” Tezuka said.

“Sometimes he would come by where we are working and look at things and give some opinions. He would generally observe things and make comments here and there, and even things that didn’t seem like they were big comments – I have worked with Mr. Miyamoto for a long time and really understand him, so I was able to get what he was implying or getting to and we would have conversations around those sorts of topics.”

“He did have a comment about Elephant Mario,” Mouri-san interjected, referencing one of the new forms Mario can take in Wonder.

Borderlands six-game collection coming to Xbox, PlayStation, and PC with discounts for existing owners

8 months 2 weeks ago

Gearbox's Borderlands series is readying for a busy few months; a six-game digital-only Borderlands bundle is coming to PlayStation, Xbox, and PC tomorrow, 1st September, and Borderlands 3 will be making its Switch debut on 6th October.

Starting with the Borderlands Collection: Pandora's Box, as the bundle is officially known, it packages up every game in the series so far, excluding last year's Tina Tina's Wonderlands spin-off - so, Borderlands 1, 2, The Pre-Sequel, 3, Tales from the Borderlands, and New Tales from the Borderlands - and then crams in every bit of accompanying DLC.

It's a significant amount of Borderlands, then, and the bundle comes with a correspondingly sizeable price tag, weighing in at $149.99 USD (or your local equivalent). The happier news, though, is that publisher 2K is offering a range of discounts, starting with a far more affordable $59.99 limited-time launch price. Additionally, 2K has announced a number of upgrade paths for existing Borderlands players, making the cost of entry more manageable still.

Microsoft and Funko partnered to produce a Funko Pop figure of Vasco, a robot companion Starfield. The figure is available to pre-order from Microsoft's Xbox Gear Shop for $17.99. It is expected to ship in February 2024.

Vasco is a companion you can meet and recruit in Starfield, with a utilitarian design intended to survive in the various biomes you'll discover. The vinyl figure stands at just over four inches tall and emphasizes the bot's squat body and prominent optics with cartoony proportions.

The Vasco Funko Pop is exclusive to the Xbox Gear Shop, and as such comes with the free sticker exclusive to that storefront. The store page also notes that the figure will only be produced in limited quantities, though it is unknown if it could receive a rerun in the future.
