Call of Duty's bottomless content machine has claimed Lara Croft

8 months 3 weeks ago

Lara Croft is coming to Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 and Warzone as part of the imminent Season 5 content drop, and... I am not OK with this. I am not OK. The news has been out there for a while, but today's Activision screenshot bulletin is the first I've heard of it, and I am here to tell you that this is a travesty and a disgrace and, excuse me, I'm sorry, I need a moment. What have they done to you, Lara? Oh hell, they've even used your "I only play for sport" quote from the original TR intro as a finishing move catchphrase. Good night, sweet Croft. May flights of angels (of Darkness) sing you to your rest.

Solidigm's P44 Pro 2TB SSD reaches $105 at Newegg in the US

8 months 3 weeks ago

Solidigm's P44 Pro is one of the most underrated PCIe 4.0 SSDs on the market, offering similar performance to the WD SN850x and Samsung 990 Pro while costing significantly less. I've been using this drive for months, and now it's down to $104.99 for a 2TB model at Newegg - from an original price of $170. For context, the last time we saw a deal on this model was $117 back in June.

AMD FSR 3 demystified: how the next-gen upscaler could upgrade performance on "any" GPU

8 months 3 weeks ago

Apologies to Geoffey K and his GTA 6-loving stage invader, but for me, the torquiest head-turner of Gamescom 2023 was not a game but AMD FSR 3. The Radeon gang’s long awaited answer to DLSS 3 finally got a proper reveal, showcasing how its frame generation feature – called Fluid Motion Frames – could triple performance in supported games. And, while it was revealed alongside two new GPUs – the Radeon RX 7800 XT and RX 7700 XT – AMD general manager Scott Herkelman suggested that FSR 3 will work "on any graphics card" once it launches.

Front Mission 2 Remake Switch Release Date Revealed

8 months 3 weeks ago

What Is the Front Mission 2 Remake Switch Release Date

We now have a final Front Mission 2 Remake Switch release date following a past delay. Forever Entertainment said we'll see it on October 5, 2023. The game initially was supposed to appear in June 2023. There's also a new trailer to show how the game is looking so far.

As a reminder, Forever Entertainment made the decision to delay Front Mission 2 Remake in May 2023. The company cited quality control concerns. At the time, it didn't have a new release window. It said it expected it to still appear in 2023, but only suggested Q3 2023.

Here’s the release date trailer. It completely focuses on gameplay. People can see mechs attacking each other directly. There are also some brief looks at maps, but it is mainly about showing match-ups between units that encountered one another.

Skull & Bones Beta Preview: Yes, We Really, Finally, Actually Played This Game

8 months 3 weeks ago

It’s no secret that Ubisoft’s seafaring pirate game, Skull & Bones, which was first revealed way back in 2017, has endured a troubled development. Originally conceived as an expansion to Assassin’s Creed IV: Black Flag, then an MMO spinoff, and finally an independent project that’s suffered numerous delays, it's understandable for players to be concerned about the upcoming action game where naval warfare and piracy are placed front and center. But after numerous hours sunk into the recent closed beta, I’m happy to report that I came away from the experience much more confident that we’ll be getting a worthy successor to Black Flag’s awesome buccaneering ways. With a much more interesting story than I was expecting, some really appetizing RPG systems in place, and smooth and entertaining naval combat, Skull & Bones is looking pretty darn fun as it prepares to finally set sail at long last.

Following up on the success of Assassin’s Creed IV: Black Flag from way back in 2013, Skull & Bones is an open-world tactical action game where you play as a pirate captain set loose on the high seas during the golden age of piracy and unfettered capitalism. After suffering defeat at the hands of some water narcs and finding myself washed ashore, my journey of notoriety started from humble beginnings aboard a piece of glorified driftwood, all the way to a massive ship with enough cannons to fight off an army. The story placed me in the Indian Ocean, where I joined the crew of pirate legend John Spurlock and began running jobs in my pursuit of wealth and power. I’ll admit that I expected very little from the story, but was pleasantly surprised by the memorable cast of characters and extensive dialogue in between action-packed stretches of robbery and oceanic misdeeds.

Sonic Superstars: The First Preview

8 months 3 weeks ago

Sonic Superstars isn’t the first time that Sega has attempted to recapture the magic of playing the original Sonic the Hedgehog more than 30 years ago. Just five years ago, in fact, Sonic Mania stuck that landing. So is there enough creative juice left in that IP tank to truly warrant another stab at rebooting the classic sidescroller? After blazing through four levels with Sonic and his cabal of colorful friends, each with their particular set of skills, signs point to yes — with a caveat. Ultimately, Sonic Superstars is just more Sonic with a facelift and a few new bells and whistles. The game is fun and tricky, great to look at, and speaks to those Sega Genesis memories lodged forever in my brain, but it also doesn’t feel amazingly novel. At least in solo play, that is.

Sonic Superstars shines in local co-op mode.. Up to four people can join, but even just playing with one other person, as I did, had me feeling like a kid on the couch, shouting at the screen with friends. Except this time, we’re not passing the controller back and forth; we’re all in on it together. The mechanics for keeping the team as one unit works surprisingly seamlessly. If one player gets stuck on an obstacle as another powers forward on unstoppable momentum, the player left behind is prompted to catch up with a button press and boom, their character of choice materializes back into the action.

Sonic Superstars Works Surprisingly Well In Co-Op

Sonic Superstars is bringing proper cooperative play to a series that has often, as far back as Sonic the Hedgehog 2, let a second player pick up a controller and play as Tails while the camera followed the blue blur. Thank Goodness You're Here is a bit like a Yorkshire Untitled Goose Game, but infinitely weirder

8 months 3 weeks ago

The Opening Night Live trailer for 'comedy slapformer' Thank Goodness You're Here! was a joyous balm in a sea of shoulder shrugs last week. Its bright, cartoon visuals instantly stood out against the grey, ultra-realistic grizzle beards of everything else Geoff had to offer in his Gamescom mega show last Tuesday, and even now I still find myself whistling its jaunty little song around the house. But what exactly is Thank Goodness You're Here!? Well, having played through one of its 15 minute missions now, I can tell you it's a bit like Untitled Goose Game, in that you have a village you can wander about in causing chaos, but it's also much more structured than that, with specific quests and people to help as you guide your tiny travelling salesman through its surreal neighbourhood. Here's what I learned.

Picross dev's puzzler Logiart Grimoire hits Steam early access next month

8 months 3 weeks ago

Jupiter Corporation - the studio behind Nintendo's long-running Picross series - has unveiled a new Picross-style puzzler, Logiart Grimoire, which launches into Steam early access on 11th September and Switch sometime next year.

The Logiart Grimoire of the title is a magical book formerly used to solve Logiart mysteries before its power waned, and it comes into players' possession along with its custodian, a helpful wizard-y companion called Emil. That whole fanciful framing device is, of course, secondary to the real business at hand: solving 'picture logic puzzles' that feature horizontal and vertical rows of numbers used as hints to place dots on a grid and form illustrations.

If that sounds familiar, it's because Logiart Grimoire is essentially Picross in all but name (Nintendo owns the 'Picross' title, while Jupiter owns its systems), albeit with an added magic twist hooking into a new "fusion" system that challenges players to figure out how to combine materials gained through solving puzzles to unlock new ones.

River City Girls 2 Online Multiplayer Player Count Expanded

Now that the free River City Girls 2 online multiplayer update is live, up to four players can go through the beat'em up at once. The patch is now available on all platforms. In addition, there is also a new $74.99 bundle that packs it in with River City Girls and River City Girls Zero. There's a new trailer accompanying its debut to offer an overview of the series as a whole.

Prior to the patch, we could only have up to two players online with River City Girls 2 multiplayer. However, the offline local option let four people play together. As a reminder, the game also features cross-play.

Here’s the new River City Girls trailer, which covers all three games, It generally explains the characters and experiences. It doesn’t cite what’s specifically going on in each game or what to expect. But River City Girls Zero is a localization of the Super Famicom game Shin Nekketsu Kōha: Kunio-tachi no Banka, only with one option being a themed localization that makes it part of this timeline. River City Girls is the original adventure of Misako and Kyoko trying to save Kunio and Riki. River City Girls 2 is the follow-up where the four of them, Double Dragon’s Marian, and River City Underground’s Provie face a whole new threat to the city.

Someone Has Beaten Baldur's Gate 3 With the Worst Possible Ending for Everyone

8 months 3 weeks ago

A Baldur's Gate 3 player has just shared their detailed notes from a playthrough of the game in which they tried to get the absolute worst story outcomes for every single character. All except for Scratch the dog.

In a Reddit thread, u/Sparkism provided a detailed guide to ruining the day of every single Baldur's Gate 3 character systematically through all three acts. Surprisingly, this is more complex than it seems: while it may feel like the easiest way to do this is to just murder everyone, some characters actually have a better time if certain other characters are dead, so they had to get creative to make things as abysmal for everyone as possible.

Warning: Light spoilers for act one of Baldur's Gate 3 are detailed below. Read on at your own risk!

For instance, Sparkism's guide recommends saving Oskar from the Zhentarim in their hideout. Him being alive plays an important role later in the game, as it makes another character miserable who would otherwise be happy if he never comes home. Similarly, while players are advised to kill Karlach and Gale early on (or, by inaction, let them die), Astarion, Wyll, and Lae'zel need to be recruited to cause further misery down the line.

Other interactions are a little more obvious, though. Sparkism recommends smashing the bard Alfira's lute, saving the Tiefling from the Bugbear assassin only to throw her off a cliff, and camping outside the burning inn while everyone roasts to death inside. It's a pretty grim playthrough!

Cyberpunk Red: Combat Zone Tabletop Game Review

8 months 3 weeks ago

The vibrant world of Cyberpunk is returning to the tabletop once again. Based on the future-noir setting of the Cyberpunk Red RPG from R. Talsorian Games, Combat Zone from publisher Monster Fight Club is a skirmish affair that has players fielding gangs of a half dozen or so figures. Set roughly 30 years prior to the video game, factions battle it out in an urban warzone looking to claim a slice of concrete as their own.

This boxed starter set comes with everything two players need to play. The miniatures are made of an in-house developed resin/plastic hybrid, capturing a strong amount of detail while requiring only a small amount of assembly.

In addition to the expected dice, rules, and tokens, this set includes the best terrain of any miniatures game starter set I’ve seen. The barricades, ruined buildings, and even the playing surface are all thick cardboard that is extremely durable. The terrain is modular, assembled with plastic clips that allow for several configurations. The sheer weight and sturdiness is far beyond any other game I've played. It functionally serves as a modern update to Games Workshop’s original 1995 Necromunda boxed set with its myriad of cardboard walkways and gantries. This is similarly jaw-dropping in the context of its time and a big selling point of the package.

Dark Messiah of Might & Magic might get raytracing and co-op thanks to modders

8 months 3 weeks ago

Released in 2006, Dark Messiah Of Might And Magic made the most of still-novel physics tech by letting you torment orcs with slippy floors, collapsing log piles, and swift kicks directly into spikes. These slapstick delights made it a cult classic, but rights-holders Ubisoft haven't done much with the game since.

Now a group of modders have been given a "completely blank check" by Ubisoft to do what they want with their efforts to build a modding SDK for the nearly 20-year-old game, and their ambitions include co-op and raytracing.

The Settlers creator's Pioneers of Pagonia starts early access in December

8 months 3 weeks ago

Pioneers of Pagonia, the intriguing new city builder from original The Settlers designer Volker Wertich and his team at Envision Entertainment, is launching into Steam early access on 13th December, with a public demo and closed alpha planned before then.

Pioneers of Pagonia, for the uninitiated, whisks players away to the procedurally generated islands of Pagonia, where they'll need to establish a presence - steadily increasingly their reach and influence among the islands' many fantastical, not always friendly inhabitants - through production, economic expansion, and exploration, making use of the resources they uncover along the way.

We got a first taste of Pioneers of Pagonia's city building action back in June - via an extremely adorable in-game reveal trailer - and Envision has been sharing occassional gameplay details in posts on Steam too. Soon, though, it'll be time for players to get stuck in, starting with a closed alpha in September - which will be available to selected subscribers of the studio's newsletter.

Baldur's Gate 3's second patch "around the corner", targets Act 3 performance improvements and bugs

8 months 3 weeks ago

Baldur's Gate 3's second major patch is now live, bringing - as detailed earlier this week - major performance improvements with a particular focus on the rather wobbly Act 3, a "fiery, poignant" optional new ending for Karlach, the ability to dismiss co-op party members from a campaign via a magic wardrobe, plus a lengthy list of other fixes and improvements.

There's perhaps nothing quite as eye-catching as Baldur's Gate 3's recent penis cover-ups and gnome re-panting, but Patch 2 does, alongside its headline features, bring some welcome file size reductions, plus improvements across the likes of combat, spells, world interaction, UI, and controller support. Full details can be found in today's extensive patch notes.

A week after Baldur's Gate got its first major patch - bringing around 1,000 bug fixes among other things - developer Larian Studios has shared initial details on its next big batch of changes, fixes, and additions, which it says is "just around the corner".

Baldur’s Gate 3 Devs Will Address ‘Very Stupid Bug’ Blocking 1500 Lines of Minthara Content

8 months 3 weeks ago

Baldur's Gate 3's next big patch is releasing soon, and by all accounts it will be a chonky one, featuring a host of performance improvements and other fixes. There's still work to be done though, including addressing Minthara, who has been hobbled by what director Swen Vincke describes as a "very, very stupid bug."

Speaking with IGN, Vincke talked about how the scope of Baldur's Gate 3 can cause cascading reactions that can sometimes lock out content by accident. Such is the case with Baldur's Gate 3's drow murderess.

"The game is super reactive and there were a couple of bugs that caused some of the companions to not react as they should. And so that felt like the content was not showing up. So you weren't seeing it specifically with Minthara," Vincke explained. "So [lead writer Adam Smith] told me there's about 1500 lines of Minthara that weren't showing up as a result of a very, very stupid bug that we now isolated. So we're solving it."

Sonic Team Head: Pixel Art Won't be Viable Art Style for Sonic Games in 10 - 20 Years

8 months 3 weeks ago

Sonic Superstars is shaping up to be the biggest Sonic game of the year partly because of the new 2.5D aesthetic for Classic Sonic. However, Sonic Team suggests Classic Sonic's new look may be permanent, as they believe pixel art won't be a viable style for Sonic in 10 to 20 years.

According to a report from GamesRadar, Sonic Team creative officer and producer Takashi Iizuka said at Gamescom that Sonic Superstars is "an evolution of the 2D Sonic gameplay," but doesn't believe that 2D pixel art will survive as a video game art form for the franchise within the next two decades.

This comment effectively throws cold water at the possibility of Classic Sonic fans seeing Sonic Mania 2 coming to light.

"[W]e look at the pixel art — it's great — but when we think about 10-20 years in the future, we don't think it's going to be a viable art style or presentation for our players," Iizuka said through a translator. "And in order to advance and really step things up, we did want to make sure that we're presenting something that 10-20 years down the road we're still evolving and creating new content for."

It's important to note that Iizuka-san's comments about pixel art not being a viable gaming art style only applies to Sonic, not other games in general. Pixel art sustained itself remarkably well in many indie games in the last decade, including 2064: Read Only Memories, Dead Cells, Kaze and the Wild Masks, Freedom Planet, and more recently Sea of Stars and Octopath Traveler 2.

Suikoden I and II HD Remaster Delayed

The Suikoden I and II HD Remaster just got delayed, with Konami not offering an exact updated window for the rerelease. It was announced back in September 2022. At the time, the company said it would show up in 2023. Now both the Japanese and English websites note there is no release window.

Here's the official announcement. Konami noted this delay is to ensure the overall quality of the final collection. It also mentioned that the goal is to still release it on modern consoles and PCs "as soon as is possible."

We would like to thank Suikoden fans everywhere for your ongoing passion and support for the Suikoden series.

Regarding the planned release of Suikoden I & II HD Remaster: Gate Rune and Dunan Unification Wars, we have reached the conclusion that despite the very best efforts of our dedicated development staff to release the Remasters in 2023, additional time is needed to ensure the quality performance and gameplay experience our users deserve.

The entire Suikoden team is renewing our efforts to bring Suikoden I & II HD Remaster to release as soon as is possible.

We will share further release information as soon as it becomes available, on our official social media accounts and official homepage.
