EA Reveals FIFA Has Sold 325 Million Units as Publisher Extends Partnership With UEFA

3 years 3 months ago

EA Sports has today announced a strengthening of its partnership with UEFA, Europe’s premier football sanctioning body, as a multi-year license extension ensures exclusivity of its champion’s league competition moving forward.

In the same press release, the publisher also touted the FIFA franchise’s lifetime sales have surpassed 325 million units. Further, that FIFA 21 player numbers have already succeeded those of FIFA 20, which was itself a record-breaker.

EA now plans to expand the franchise with its mobile offerings and PC FIFA Online 4 free-to-play experience, an initiative it hopes will open the door to a further 80 million players in 15 new countries. FIFA 21 is also coming to Google Stadia later this spring, March 17.

DJ Jackson, VP, EA SPORTS Brand, weighed in with a comment on today’s announcement:

“Our vision is to create the most authentic, social and connected football experience by bringing our games to more devices, more countries and more fans around the world.

EA SPORTS continues to rapidly transform how fans consume sport, evolving football from a passive and scheduled experience to an interactive one, accessible at any time. This is the world’s game, and EA SPORTS is doing everything we can to further connect players, athletes, clubs and leagues and grow the love of football, globally.”

Pokemon Sword and Shield is the most successful Pokemon game since Gold and Silver

3 years 3 months ago

Well, this is where we're at. Amid all of the controversy, people showed up for Pokemon Sword and Shield. In overwhelming amounts.

According to the latest sales data from Nintendo, Pokemon Sword and Shield, billed as a duo (which is historically how Game Freak and Nintendo handle generations), have sold 20.35 million copies. That's huge! Like, right behind Zelda: Breath of the Wild in a much shorter timeframe, and "fifth biggest Switch title so far" sales.

But as ResetEra points out, it's actually kind of monumental. This makes Sword and Shield the only Pokemon set of games to cross the 20 million mark since Gold/Silver so many years ago. The only other generation to break 20 million (and soar into 31 million actually) is the very first: Red/Green/Blue.

It's really interesting, looking at the sales data throughout the series. Platinum/Emerald/Crystal are at the bottom, beaten ever so slightly by a collective of sequels: Black/White 2 and Ultra Sun/Ultra Moon. While 8.89 million for the latter pair isn't something to shake a stick at, I can definitely see why Game Freak might be reticent for full-on sequels in the future.

Why limit your audience when you can just sell a season pass for a game with a 20 million install base?

Final Fantasy XII triumphantly leads the Xbox Game Pass February offerings

3 years 3 months ago

One Final Fantasy game shall stand, one shall fall.

That latter game is Final Fantasy XV, which recently left the Xbox Game Pass service. But some would say that Microsoft is "trading up," as Final Fantasy XII: The Zodiac Age is about to enter center stage. Starting on February 11, FFXII will be available on Xbox Game Pass on both consoles and PC. It's a pretty nice get,  alongside of Jurassic World Evolution, Stealth Inc. 2, and Wolfenstein: Youngblood (just Android, aka xCloud) on that same date.

Rewinding a bit (I had to lead with the headliner!), on February 4, Ghost of a Tale will hit on PC, as well as Project Winter and Falconeer on PC, console, and Android. Note that Falconeer just launched as a premiere game on the Xbox One X/S (and PC), so it hitting Game Pass already is a good deal for folks who were curious.

You can gaze at the full list below!

Nintendo allegedly canned The Legend of Zelda live-action series after Netflix leak

3 years 3 months ago

You might remember, back in 2015, several reports emerged that Netflix was working with Nintendo to produce a live-action Legend of Zelda series. Mere weeks later, it seemed as if this exciting project was nothing more than wishful thinking. Well, in today's hot gossip, it is being reported that the Zelda series was indeed in the works, but Nintendo canceled the project after its existence was leaked to the press.

The intriguing new tidbit comes from U.S. comedian Adam Conover, dating back to a time when Conover worked with viral website CollegeHumor. According to Conover, the CollegeHumor team were working on a series of StarFox skits that featured stop-motion animation - a play on Wes Anderson's 2009 movie Fantastic Mr. Fox. These skits had Nintendo's backing, with Shigeru Miyamoto himself visiting the CollegeHumor office.

But speaking on podcast TheSerfTimes yesterday, (as noted by superrerogatory), Conover recounted how, out of the blue, the plug was abruptly pulled on the StarFox project. You can hear Conover's story for yourself at 39:00 in the video below.

Cyberpunk 2077 players told to "use caution" with mods and custom saves after exploit discovered

3 years 3 months ago

Following the discovery of a save file exploit, CD Projekt Red has told players to "use caution" when downloading files of unknown origin for use in Cyberpunk 2077.

In a statement to Eurogamer, CDPR explained a little about the nature of the vulnerability:

"A group of community members reached out to us to bring up an issue with the external DLL files the game uses. This issue can be potentially used as part of a remote code execution on PCs. We appreciate their input and are working on fixing this as soon as possible. In the meantime, we advise everyone to refrain from using files obtained from unknown sources. Anyone who plans to use mods or custom saves for Cyberpunk 2077 should use caution until we release the aforementioned fix."

Nintendo Reportedly Canceled a Zelda Netflix Series After It Leaked

3 years 3 months ago
Nintendo reportedly scrapped a live-action Legend of Zelda series with Netflix after news of the project leaked and circulated online. As reported by Eurogamer, US comedian Adam Conover who was aware of a secret Star Fox claymation project around the same time, revealed that Nintendo canceled its proposed slate of video game adaptations with Netflix after someone from the company allegedly spread the word about the Zelda series. The Wall Street Journal shared details of the adaptation and Nintendo rescinded the show. "Suddenly there were reports Netflix wasn't going to do its Legend of Zelda anymore," Conover recently recalled, speaking on The Serf Times podcast. "I was like 'what happened?' And then I heard from my boss we weren't doing our Star Fox anymore. I was like 'what happened?' He was like, 'someone at Netflix leaked the Legend of Zelda thing.' They weren't supposed to talk about it, Nintendo freaked out... and they pulled the plug on everything, the entire programme to adapt these things." [ignvideo url="https://www.ign.com/videos/2015/02/06/zelda-netflix-show-why-now-is-the-perfect-time"] News of the prospective live-action Legend of Zelda series with Netflix hit headlines back in 2015 when "a person familiar with the matter" reportedly told WSJ that the streamer had described the upcoming show as "Game of Thrones for a family audience," with a story that would follow Link's conquest to save Princess Zelda and the land of Hyrule.

Destiny 2 Season Of The Chosen Revealed In New Trailer With A New Strike And Returning Favorites

3 years 3 months ago

Season 13 is almost here in Destiny 2: Beyond Light, and Bungie just showed off a brand new trailer to highlight what's next for Guardians. Called Season of the Chosen, the latest period for the space shooter brings with it a new Strike (and a few returning favorites), new gear, and the seasonal Battleground activity that pits Guardians against hordes of Cabal.

Destiny 2: Beyond Light giveth and it has taketh away, but the new season is all about bringing in new reasons to grind. With the Pyramids and Xivu Arath destabilizing the system, it's up to the leader of the Cabal (and Calus' daughter) to reset that balance. To achieve that balance, Empress Caiatl is looking to strike an alliance with Guardians. Unfortunately, her demands are a little too steep for our pal Zavala and negotiations quickly spiral out of control. From there, her expanding war council is at a unique precipice, one where Guardians themselves become the tip of the spear.

Destiny 2 Unveils Season of the Chosen With New Trailer; New Exotic, Cabal Enemies, Activity & More

3 years 3 months ago

Destiny 2’s next season, Season of the Chosen, has now been (officially) revealed. Although the GameInformer leak took the wind out of the sails a bit, the lore heavily hinted at much of the content anyway which was confirmed in a new trailer this morning.

The Cabal Empress Caiatl, the new main leader of the Cabal, offers an “alliance” of sorts, which sounds more like she wishes to use Guardians as a tool against the darkness. She asks Zavala to bow and he declines. This sets off either a war, or a challenge of some kind, it’s not entirely clear.

Check it out for yourself below.

There’s a new exotic shown, Ticuu’s Divination, which is a solar bow weapon that can charge solar arrows that can track enemies. This is presumed to be the seasonal exotic weapon that season pass holders will receive at level 1.

It seems like it could be deadly in PvP. It’s not crazy enough in there right now so some homing arrow bows should really spice things up.

The return of Fallen SABER and Sepiks Prime strikes on the Cosmodrome were shown. These two have been rumored and are now confirmed. In addition, there’s a new strike called Proving Grounds which will unlock later in the season.

Valorant Patch 2.02 Nerfs Running Accuracy, Improves Ranked Systems

3 years 3 months ago

Riot Games has finally addressed a major issue with Valorant’s gunplay that fans have long been asking for. Patch 2.02 will nerf the accuracy of rifles while crouch-walking, walking, and running, which will (hopefully) reduce the chances of being randomly decapitated by strafing enemies.

It’s a change that is designed to bring Valorant more in-line with other tactical-shooter such as Counter-Strike, in which the higher skill ceiling punishes players for “running and gunning” as opposed to learning how to accurately shoot.

Elsewhere, Patch 2.02 also makes some very welcome changes to Valorant’s Competitive mode. Namely, an improved Rank Rating convergence to ensure players are channelled toward their Rank at a faster and fairer rate.

So what does that mean, exactly? Well, since Patch 2.0 and the overhaul to Valorant’s Competitive system, many players have found themselves stuck at a given rank due to the small disparity between the RR you receive when winning and losing. From now on, more RR will be awarded for wins, and less will be taken for losses.

Moving forward, Riot has also promised that measures will be taken to ensure individual performances will also count for RR boosts — hopefully, for losses as well as wins.
