Ratchet & Clank: Rift Apart Will Offer 4K 30 FPS and 60 FPS Resolution Modes

3 years 7 months ago
Ratchet & Clank: Rift Apart will offer two resolution modes, 4K at 30 FPS and 60 FPS at lower resolutions. That's according to a Famitsu interview featuring Marcus Smith and Mike Daly of Insomniac Games, as spotted by Nibel on Twitter. In the interview, Famitsu asks about the "supported frame rates and resolutions" for Ratchet & Clank: Rift Apart, with Daly responding that the game will offer two separate modes for players to pick from to balance comfortable gameplay with beautiful graphics. "One is 30 FPS at 4K resolution and the other is lower resolution at 60 FPS," the translation reads. [ignvideo url="https://www.ign.com/videos/2020/08/27/ratchet-clank-rift-apart-ps5-gameplay-trailer"] Later in the same interview, the interpreter mentions that the Ratchet and Clank series ditched the 60 FPS benchmark set by the PS2 games in favour of 30 FPS and better graphics for PS3 and PS4 players. With the PS5 release, it appears that they're now giving players the choice between these two different styles. During Opening Night Live, Rift Apart was confirmed to be a "launch window" game for the PS5, and we got a better look at gameplay from the forthcoming action-adventure title. Back in June, it was confirmed that Rift Apart's female Lombax character will be playable. [poilib element="accentDivider"] Jordan Oloman is a freelance writer for IGN. Follow him on Twitter.

Here’s Marvel’s Avengers but With the MCU Actors Faces

3 years 7 months ago

When Crystal Dynamics and Square Enix first showed off Marvel’s Avengers in all of its glory, I think most of us can admit that the faces of these well-known Marvel characters didn’t look quite right; Crystal Dynamics even remodeled the faces!

And it’s not that they don’t look like their MCU counterparts, but it’s the fact that they all look very similar to the big Hollywood stars that play Iron Man and Black Widow –it’s uncanny.

It would’ve been interesting to see how people would have felt if Robert Downey Jr. and the rest of the gang would have reprised their roles in a video game format.

But today we don’t have to imagine what that would look like, because someone has actually done it… sort of.

BabyZoneGaming on YouTube is known for creating videos using DeepFake technology, placing the likeness of these Hollywood actors over the video game faces.

For this latest video, they take Robert Downey Jr, Chris Evans, Scarlett Johansson, Chris Hemsworth and Mark Ruffalo, and has plopped them into a Marvel’s Avengers trailer.

Does it make the game better? I can’t tell you.

Wasteland 3 is out now, InXile's latest post-apocalyptic RPG

3 years 7 months ago

InXile Entertainment’s latest adventure in the post-apocalyptic lands of the USA, Wasteland 3, came out today, bringing with it a big bizarre statue of a robo-Ronald Reagan. The RPG will have you fill the boots of a lone Ranger, tasked with reestablishing society in the wastes of Colorado. It’s a bit like old school Fallout, what with being a story-driven RPG full of turn-based tactical shoot-outs. It’s worth noting that the original Wasteland inspired the original Fallout games, which have in-turn inspired the new Wasteland games. Ah, the circle of life.

Chasing the dream of four people in a room

3 years 7 months ago

It's easy to forget there was life before No Man's Sky at Hello Games. The studio, which is still small now, started out tiny: "four people in a room" as co-founder Sean Murray puts it, somewhat wistfully, when the original team started work on the PS3's Joe Danger. Speaking to Murray and Steven Burgess, who's taking the lead on The Last Campfire, the curiously mournful puzzle-adventure that arrived via surprise release yesterday, the focus is very much on that kind of independent spirit.

There's some nostalgia there, when Murray talks over the studio's history, starting with the now-familiar story of the humble Joe Danger roots and how the team quickly ballooned to "15 or 16" people on No Man's Sky at the peak, before settling on the 25 that make up the internal Hello Games team now. But the core team's not the one working on The Last Campfire. Burgess, alongside Chris Symonds and James Chilcott, make up the entirety of The Last Campfire team. The main bulk of the Hello Games team is on something else entirely.

The setup now is all a bit full-circle. Burgess and Symonds were on "a smallish team" of about 18 people within a much larger one at Frontier Developments when their previous game, 2008's LostWinds, was in progress. After that, it was more or less solely Burgess that headed up the work on porting Hello Game's own small-team game Joe Danger to iOS ("We worked on that together, but Stevie did all the work," Murray half-jokes).

The Beauty of “Beater” Gear: Cheap Stuff That Can Take a Hit

3 years 7 months ago

I’m the kind of guy who, on a hike, will trip over a cactus because I wasn’t paying attention. I run my earbuds through the washing machine, scratch up my sunglasses, and drop my phone while jogging. And as someone who hates even the smallest signs of wear and tear, my clumsiness is often at odds with my ability to…

Little Nightmares 2 Gives You a Friend in the Darkness

3 years 7 months ago

Little Nightmares introduced us to a disturbing world inhabited by monstrous enemies - like the misshapen janitor with his elongated hands, or the corpulent twin chefs preparing a grotesque feast for their disgusting guests. Following a hands-on encounter with Little Nightmares 2’s first new adversary, I’m happy to say that the sequel is proving to be just as unnerving.

This particular tale puts you in control of Mono, a diminutive figure who adorns his head with a paper bag in an oddly cute fashion statement. Where the first installment had you navigating the tight confines of a ship, this sequel introduced me to foreboding and equally oppressive woods, filled with cages, traps, and viscera. It wasn’t long before I hesitantly explored the basement of an old shack to find an imprisoned child who turned out to be Six, the protagonist from the first story (minus her signature yellow raincoat, which immediately had me thinking about when exactly this story takes place).

[ignvideo url="https://www.ign.com/videos/2020/08/27/little-nightmares-2-gameplay-trailer"]

True to its predecessor, Little Nightmares 2 will have you navigating the side-scrolling world and interacting with the often oversized environment to overcome obstacles, uncover paths and dodge traps - or worse. The locations are as suitably haunting as they are engrossing, with every discarded item and object telling a story you aren’t quite sure you want to hear the ending to. Why are there so many abandoned shoes near these animal cages? Are those stuffed bags buzzing with flies full of dead animals - or something even more disturbing? I was also pleased to find Little Nightmares 2 made the subtle effort to warn you of danger, like a soft breeze rattling the bear traps hidden beneath the leaves, or a scavenging crow ready to squawk and draw attention to your location upon drawing close.

Scarlet Nexus First-Look Preview

3 years 7 months ago

Scarlet Nexus is a stylish, flashy, and edgy action-RPG; and features some beautifully grotesque enemy designs in the form of "The Others."  Though I didn't get to play it myself, I did get to see a 16-minute gameplay demo and presentation from the producer, director, and art director, and I came away thoroughly interested and a little hopeful.

So, first things first: Why the heck is it called Scarlet Nexus? Tales series veteran and Scarlet Nexus Director Kenji Anabuki, along with Producer Keita Iizuka, said Scarlet Nexus can be interpreted as "red connection,"  or "red bonds." Iizuka elaborated by saying "Objects or persons connected with red lines represent a big part in the visuals and key art of Scarlet Nexus."

[widget path="global/article/imagegallery" parameters="albumSlug=scarlet-nexus-preview-screenshots-and-art&captions=true"]

We see this obviously by the red tubes stuck into main character Yuito Sumeragi's back, which are applied in an early cutscene and appear whenever Yuito borrows power from his teammates. These red cables are actually "brain link cables" that connect the members of the Other Suppression Force, or O.S.F,  together.

Scarlet Nexus’ world is set in the "near future... but in an alternative reality where people discovered substances in the brain and developed their society greatly on that,” Iizuka explained.  These psionic brain hormones also grant humans extrasensory powers, which Yuito and the O.S.F. wield as a weapon.

The world is technologically advanced compared to ours, but this technology is all centered on the brain’s development, and the characters also have special powers by using their brains. All of this is why the developers have dubbed Scarlet Nexus’ genre “brainpunk,” deriving the new term from “steampunk” and “dieselpunk.”

Windbound Review – Lost at Sea

3 years 7 months ago

Windbound on PS4

Any video game that lists Legend of Zelda as its main inspiration is sure to have big shoes to fill right off the bat. With that said, as soon Deep Silver unveiled its newest survival RPG, Windbound, it became clear that the potential to be successful and innovative for the genre with those high goals in mind was at least there.

As soon as you boot up Windbound, the art style and ambiance are on full display. The flurries of wind, deep blue raging sea, and the sheer size of the beast that pops up out of the water set up that a seemingly fantastic adventure is ahead.

Windbound’s story picks up right after Kara, the game’s protagonist, is separated from her fellow warriors after falling off her boat amidst a sea creature attack. While she eventually winds up on shore, it isn’t until after she passes through a mysterious portal-like gate.

This gate leads Kara to a land known as The Forbbiden Islands, an area spread across the open sea, harboring many strange and unique creatures, artifacts, and structures. To survive, Kara must use her warrior skills to hunt, craft, and explore.

The first chapter is all about finding your footing, as tutorials explain the basics to each aspect of gameplay, detailing everything from finding food to building a boat. While Kara starts out with a simple knife, it isn’t long until she is able to craft a bow and other more powerful weapons by finding recipes.

Rogue Company needs a heaping scoop of personality if it wants to stand out

3 years 7 months ago

Rogue Company is a difficult game to write about. When I sit down at my computer to type, its bland and basic world begins to fade from my mind, and I struggle to think of anything meaningful to say about it. Despite its diverse cast of characters, fast-paced shooting action, and sufficiently smooth gameplay on my Switch, it just doesn't leave a lasting impact. The experience scuttles from my mind, and the only thought I can muster about it amounts to no more than an admission that I did indeed just play an online shooter.

Maybe that's because nothing about Rogue Company is original. This is a checklist of a game, cribbing features and modes from other popular titles and stitching them together in this third-person, squad-based shooter. There are dancing emotes, the ping system from Apex Legends, sprays, characters with their own unique abilities, a between-match weapons upgrade system, and modes recycled from games that came before it. You've seen this all before, and chances are, you've seen it done better than it is here.

Here's why Scarlet Nexus has disturbing flower bouquet monsters

3 years 7 months ago

When it comes to strange enemy designs, things surely can't get much weirder than Bandai Namco's upcoming action RPG Scarlet Nexus. Flowers with ostrich legs and stilettos, a slinky with human hands - it's all rather disturbing stuff. Kind of like that horrible spider doll from Toy Story.

Thankfully, the game's developers are here with some answers as to why these look so darn odd, as discussed in a recent Scarlet Nexus preview viewed by Eurogamer.

For context, the game is set in a technologically advanced society called New Himika - a country "so big that the concept of 'overseas' doesn't even exist," as art director Kouta Ochiai explained. This civilisation has developed based on technology surrounding the brain, with the populace using a form of brain-internet called the Psynet, while some use advanced brain power in the form of various psykinetic abilities. It's not all glamorous, however, as this world is frequently visited by "the Others": alien creatures without a consciousness that feed on human brains. Those are the flower bouquet things, if you hadn't guessed.
