Football Manager 2024 Review – Refreshing at Just the Right Time

5 months 3 weeks ago

Football Manager 2024 on PC

Try as we might, the yearly release hold can be inescapable for many of us. Especially when it comes to sports titles. For example, while the long-running EA Sports FIFA series may be under a new name – now aptly titled EA FC – a lot of its sameness lingers. There were some tweaks, sure, but nothing to truly enhance the overall experience. Which brings us to Football Manager.

20 years on, the partnership between Sports Interactive and SEGA is as strong as ever. And yet, although the past couple of entries were more often than not enjoyable – one need only glance at my play time to confirm – stagnation began setting in. The experience itself was still the best in the business and yet, there appeared to be little room left to grow. Nothing revolutionary, some minor tweaks, and perhaps a little lack of imagination.

Now More Than Ever, Destiny 2 Needs to Crack Open the Content Vault

5 months 3 weeks ago

With the recent revelation that the upcoming Final Shape DLC for Destiny 2 will be delayed from February 2024 to June 2024, Destiny 2 players brace themselves for an impending seven-month-long Season. Normally I’d be okay with this to ensure the quality of the DLC is better than what we got with the Lightfall DLC, but with no content announcements for February and beyond, Bungie needs to crack open the DCV (Destiny Content Vault) now more than ever to ensure they keep player retention before The Final Shape arrives.

Thirsty Suitors Review – Jala’s Ex-Hausting Adventure

5 months 3 weeks ago

Thirsty Suitors on PC

Thirsty Suitors has been one of my most unexpected gaming joys of 2023, with the title originally catching my eye for the parallels it drew to the Scott Pilgrim franchise. However, as I soon discovered when I was given the opportunity to play a preview of the game, Thirsty Suitors is entirely original and quirky and puts a new spin on the whole ‘battle against angry exes’ thing.

Because I had found this preview to be such a blast, I was more than excited to give the completed game a run; and just as expected, the wacky, chaotic fun continued in full swing. While Thirsty Suitors does share some classic references to Scott Pilgrim, it also puts a refreshing spin on things to make the story feel entirely original.

My Time at Sandrock Review – Nailed It

5 months 3 weeks ago

My Time at Sandrock on PS5

As someone who has put in a ton of hours in My Time at Portia, I was more than happy to see the arrival of its highly-anticipated sequel, My Time at Sandrock. It’s honestly one of my most treasured life simulator games, and I couldn’t wait to see what else was in store for this beloved building tale.

Upon the start of the game, I already noticed a significant improvement in graphics that polishes both the character models and the environment from the previous game. It almost makes you feel like you have stepped into the old countries of the Wild West. This time, you won’t be taking over your grandfather’s or father’s shop, as you’ve probably seen in most of these simulator games, where you’ll take over a retired builder’s post to carve your own path.

Sony Forcing Bungie Layoffs is the Exact Opposite of What Should Be Happening

5 months 3 weeks ago

So many talented people have lost their jobs at Bungie at the hands of corporate greed. Let’s discuss how Sony forcing Bungie layoffs is the exact opposite of what should be happening.

On the 30th of October 2023, the gaming community at large began to hear that Bungie was laying off some of its staff. These kinds of things happen sadly, and often depending on the studio and their success. What rubs me the wrong way here is that it’s Bungie suffering the layoffs. We’re talking about a many multi-million-dollar successful developer suffering layoffs, under the watch and support of Sony—a multi-billion-dollar company.

WarioWare: Move It! Review – Shake It Off

5 months 3 weeks ago

WarioWare: Move It! on Switch

WarioWare has long stood as one of Nintendo’s wildcards. It’s a series that thrives on the unpredictable and the rapid-fire, quick-wit challenges that keep players on the edge of their seats. The previous installment for the Nintendo Switch, Get It Together, took a step away from the series’ traditional gameplay mechanics, leaving a void that avid fans were eager to fill.

WarioWare: Move It! not only revisits the franchise’s foundational elements but also firmly establishes itself as a worthy successor to the highly acclaimed Smooth Moves, a title from the Wii that marked a high point for the series.

Marvel Snap’s Latest Patch Eases Up on Cost Manipulation Mechanics With Mobius & Wave Changes

5 months 3 weeks ago

Cost manipulation is a powerful tool in competitive card games, and Marvel Snap is no different. For months, Wave dominated the meta in Marvel Snap by setting all cards costs to four, often preventing unsuspecting players from doing anything meaningful on turn six. However, that all changed with the release of Mobius M. Mobius.

Now, we had a card that prevented your own costs from increasing, while also preventing your opponent’s costs from decreasing. While this ultimately helped to provide an answer to Wave, it also completely shut out other deck archetypes like Zabu and Mr. Negative, which isn’t great for the meta either. Second Dinner has now pushed out another huge patch to address these issues, and to make cost manipulation a little less polarizing.

PSA: PS5 Alan Wake 2 Players Should Be Using This One Unique Feature/Setting

5 months 4 weeks ago

Alan Wake 2 on PS5 takes advantage of the Dualsense controller’s haptics, similar to all games. It gets the haptic triggers for shooting and the usual even rumble for effects. However, the game also includes an extra setting I have never encountered before that all players should use.

This setting can be found in the Audio section called Dialogue Vibration Intensity, and it is set to off by default. What it does is that character dialogue, whether in cutscenes or just surrounding chatter while in towns, will cause the Dualsense to vibrate.

Destiny 2: Well of Radiance Warlock Outmatches Every Other Class

5 months 4 weeks ago

When it comes to defensive Supers there are a few that come to mind: The Titan’s Void bubble, and the Solar Warlock’s Well of Radiance. However, not everything is equal and balanced, so let’s discuss how in Destiny 2: Well of Radiance Warlock outmatches every other class.

Destiny 2’s various Supers are as iconic as they are useful in combat. Ranging from giant exploding projectiles to quick, invisible strikes, Supers cover a wide swath of gameplay styles in Destiny 2. However, the range of Super options given by Bungie are not equal in usefulness, especially in the context of Destiny 2 gameplay being heavily skewed toward teamwork. No other Super options in the game hammer this notion in more than Void Bubble Titan, Void Shield Titan, and Solar Well Warlock.

6 More Animal Transformations Mario Should Have (& What Their Abilities Could Be)

Super Mario Bros. Wonder introduced the Elephant Fruit, a strong power-up capable of turning Mario and his friends into elephants. As the portly pachyderm, Mario and co. can spray water from their trunks and dash across two-block-wide gaps.

Animal-related power-ups are nothing new to the Mario franchise, for example, Super Mario 3D World had the Super Bell. This equipped Mario with a cat costume and the ability to climb walls, scratch enemies, and run faster. Inspired by both Super Mario Bros. Wonder’s elephant Mario, and the franchise’s more traditional animal costumes, here are 6 more animal transformations Mario should have and what their abilities could be.

Alan Wake 2 Review – Its Dark Is Worse Than Its Night

5 months 4 weeks ago

Alan Wake 2 on PS5

2023 has been an amazing year for sequels, especially sequels that have taken a decade or more (looking at you, Dead Island 2). Alan Wake 2 continues this trend and gives a unique experience wrapped up in familiar mechanics. The game doesn’t seek to reinvent the wheel but wants you to ride around and enjoy a hefty splash of that Remedy Entertainment charm.

The opening of the game feels like something out of Death Stranding. You play as a naked guy who washes up on a beach. I don’t mean a little bit naked; his ass is basically always in frame. For fun, I turned the ‘Show Nudity’ setting off and restarted the game to see what changed. It put the guy in some horrific, ratty underwear. So, honestly, I don’t know what’s worse. This is a short but memorable section, the least of all, because you must look at his naked body for important story stuff several more times after it ends.

PSA: It’s OK if Dragon Ball Daima Isn’t for You

5 months 4 weeks ago

If the recent reveal of Dragon Ball Daima left you a little less than hyped for the franchise’s future, rest assured that you’re not alone.

The series’ premise of all the major characters being turned into younger versions of themselves left many a fan unsure of the creative direction. After all, Dragon Ball found the popularity that it did with the framework of constant battles, self-improvement, and all the other core aspects of a Shonen anime. To stray away from that for a cutesier, lighter tone would only risk damaging the product’s longevity.

Bungie, It’s Time to Overhaul Legendary Armor Drops in Destiny 2

There are a lot of pieces that make up the whole of Destiny 2, and over time a lot of said pieces have been overhauled to the joy of the community. However, I would argue one such element of Destiny 2 that has had everything around it improved but not improved itself is Legendary armor, and honestly, it’s high time Bungie overhauled Legendary armor drops.

One of the best changes Bungie recently made about armor was the removal the various subclass elements being tied to it. Likewise, the mod system overhaul was a breath of fresh air for how Legendary armor’s mod sockets are utilized. But beyond those changes, the act of using Legendary armor as a reward is still as stale as it has ever been. The difference in excitement I feel between a purple gun and purple armor dropping is night and day.

Squadron 42’s New Footage Proves It’s Better To Be Skeptical Than Critical

It has been a long time since we’ve seen or heard anything substantial about the game that’s intended to be our first, single-player taste of the Star Citizen universe. It felt, for the longest while, like the silence on Squadron 42 was the surest sign yet that the entire Star Citizen enterprise was nothing but vaporware.

Then, at this weekend’s CitizenCon, a lengthy developer-led video threw the game back into the spotlight. Between its gorgeously rendered fleets of ships and immaculately digitized, star-studded cast, the new footage is genuinely and undeniably jaw-dropping; something that is made all the more exciting by the accompanying statement that the game is now “feature-complete” and “into the polishing phase”.

The first Ghostrunner game was a pleasant surprise for many, bringing a brand of high-octane parkour action that is hard to beat, especially set against the dystopian cyberpunk aesthetic that just leaves players wanting more.

Naturally, that makes the sequel something to look forward to, and although Ghostrunner 2 continues to shine where it matters the most, some of the risks One More Level has taken have not exactly paid off, resulting in a fast-moving adventure that grinds to a halt at various junctures.

Diablo 4’s Itemization is Still its Greatest Weakness

When Diablo 4 launched it was plagued by a variety of issues in almost every regard to game design. Balance, quality of life, monster density, endgame, loot, D4 suffered from subpar design in each of those categories. Fast forward to Season 2 and a great deal of things have been fixed or improved, but we’re about to discover why Diablo 4’s itemization is still its greatest weakness.

To those who may be new to action RPGs, Diablo 4’s loot may seem compelling enough, but dig a little deeper and you’ll find it’s rather shallow. Because in that simplicity and accessibility lies a recipe for a less interesting loot system. This is thanks in part to the affix limitations Blizzard has integrated into D4’s loot systems. Limitations such as, generic number increases, on-hit effects that are very difficult to sense and feel during combat, and a hard limit on number of affixes any one piece of gear can have.
