GreedFall 2: The Dying World Announced for PC and Consoles, Releasing in 2024

1 year 11 months ago

Publisher Nacon and developer Spiders have announced GreedFall 2: The Dying World for PC and consoles. The game is set to launch in 2024.

GreedFall 2's story is a prequel, taking place three years before the events of the first game. Players will assume the role of a Teer Fradee native who is uprooted from their island and is taken to where the colonists originally came from, the continent of Gacane, which has been decimated by both war and the Malichor plague.

"We are very excited to reveal GreedFall 2 to everyone, the new game from Spiders," said Nacon CEO Alain Falc in a statement. "Many fans across the world were begging for this sequel, and we are delighted to be publishing this new game that these fans are sure to love. We also hope it will appeal to new players and all fans of role-playing games, great stories, action, and fantasy."

Spiders founder and director Jehanne Rousseau added, "While we were working on Steelrising, our love of the Greedfall universe never faded, and so we are thrilled to be returning to it." She continued, saying, "In this new chapter, players will explore the old continent with its bigger and more diverse environments. They will meet new companions and new factions, and I hope they will have unforgettable adventures."

While GreedFall 2 is planned for release on consoles in 2024, it's currently unknown whether it will skip the previous generation with PlayStation 4 and Xbox One like Gotham Knights did.

Square Enix to Make Final Fantasy 7 Announcements Next Month to Celebrate Anniversary

1 year 11 months ago

Final Fantasy VII Remake director Tetsuya Nomura has said Square Enix will be making "various" announcements next month regarding the original game's 25th anniversary.

As reported by RPGSite, Nomura teased the announcements on a livestream for Final Fantasy VII spin-off The First Soldier, saying that Square Enix would be celebrating the original game's 25th anniversary.

"Next month, we're planning to publish information related to VII's 25th anniversary," he said. "I wonder how [much] I'm allowed to share about it. Next month we will publish various things."

Final Fantasy 7 turned 25 years old in January this year, the anniversary of its original Japanese release. It's western 25th anniversary is still upcoming; the original game launched in the States on September 7, 1997, and in Europe on November 17.

Remake Part 2 entered full development in July 2020 and original Final Fantasy VII director Yoshinori Kitase said earlier this year that the development team would like to announce the game in 2022 if possible.

That being said, Square Enix has other Final Fantasy VII related projects in the works (including The First Soldier and upcoming mobile RPG Final Fantasy VII: Ever Crisis), but the announcements could be much smaller and more akin to the recent clothing line reveal.

The 10 Best Dreamcast Games

1 year 11 months ago

The SEGA Dreamcast was one of the most innovative consoles ever. It also marked the end of an era. Aware that its time in the console business was almost over, Sega said to hell with it and went all-in on fascinating, weird experiments, from the delightful rhythm games like Space Channel 5 to strange curiosities like Seaman.

In compiling a list of the 10 best Sega Dreamcast games, we sought to create a snapshot of the Dreamcast's legacy, which encompassed everything from burgeoning online play to wild peripherals. We kept the focus on North America for the most part, which meant omitting many of the excellent shoot 'em ups from Japanese video game developer G.rev, but we did manage to sneak in Rez — a pioneering rhythm game that was always meant to be on Dreamcast.

The Dreamcast is long gone, but the games listed here live on as some of the most beloved games ever made. Here are the 10 best Sega Dreamcast games of all time.

10. The Typing of the Dead

A spin-off of The House of the Dead 2, The Typing of the Dead was initially designed to improve one's typing and practice how fast one can type, however, its idiosyncratic gameplay and humor make it so much more than that. Instead of a light gun, you’re using a computer keyboard and the power of proper spelling and grammar to fend off hordes of undead.

Saints Row Is Shaping Up to Be a Fun Throwback

1 year 11 months ago

Having watched roughly 50 minutes of Saints Row gameplay, I’m encouraged by what I’ve seen. Deep Silver Volition’s reboot of the series looks a lot of fun, filled with the wackiness, carnage, and humour you’d expect. It feels comfortably familiar, but with enough new ways to play to make it not just seem like a retread of what’s come before, and promises to be a welcome throwback to an era when playful, urban open-world games were a much more common occurrence.

The first thing that caught my attention was the huge emphasis placed on customisation. Everything – from your playable “Boss”, a huge range of vehicles, arsenal of weaponry, and your base – can be tailored to your own designs. Car customisation in particular looks substantial with everything from paint jobs to neon underglows available. The character creator is also extensive, giving players the option to create just about anything human-shaped their mind can imagine. You can also completely overhaul the look of your character at any time - simply open the in-game phone app to perform the most advanced cosmetic surgery known to man. In a weird way, it reminded me of The Sims as you build a library of characters, each with their own backstory you’ve made up in your head, to take control of.

Bungie Pledges Store Profits to Charity Exposing Extremists After Buffalo Shooting

1 year 11 months ago

Bungie has released a statement on the Buffalo, New York mass shooting that saw ten people killed and three others injured in a what police are investigating as a racially motivated attack.

The Destiny developer has pledged that, for at least one year, all profits from its Black Lives Matter "Be Heard" pin - which has also been moved to the front page of the Bungie Store - will go to a charity who monitors and reports hate groups and extremists in the United States. Bungie worked with its internal inclusion club, Black at Bungie, to plan the response.

Its statement said: "All profits from this pin will be donated to the Southern Poverty Law Center, a charity whose work includes monitoring hate groups and other extremists throughout the United States and exposing their activities to the public, the media, and law enforcement.

Vampire: The Masquerade – Swansong Review

1 year 11 months ago

Imagine compacting the gothic open world of 2004’s Vampire: The Masquerade – Bloodlines into an RPG that is far slower and more deliberate in its execution, dousing it with the same variety of linear, character-driven storytelling made popular in Telltale’s The Walking Dead series, then finally handing it off to receive one last blood injection from the legendary puzzle game Myst. That’s the pedigree that Vampire: The Masquerade – Swansong tries to live up to, but it struggles to piece its own identity as a detective RPG together until the very end. It’s rich with decisions that should feel meaningful in theory, but its emotional moments exist in service to a broader story with no clue what to do with them. Meanwhile, its many obtuse puzzles are often too clumsily explained. With all of that working against it, you’d be mortally forgiven for walking out of Swansong’s dark, hazy alcove before its final embrace.

Thunderful Has Four New SteamWorld Games in Development

1 year 11 months ago

Thunderful Games has four separate SteamWorld games in development with three expected to launch next year.

The company revealed during its latest financial results that SteamWorld Headhunter - a third person action adventure that was revealed in November - is just one of four different genres the SteamWorld franchise is exploring. It is expected to launch in 2023, along with two others.

Those two, codenamed 'Strawberry' and 'Coffee', will be followed in 2024 by 'Caramel'. Are all listed as "SteamWorld IP" games, with Strawberry and Coffee actually listed before Headhunter in Thunderful's development timeline.

Strawberry is a puzzle game being developed for mobile, Coffee is a city-building game for PC and console, and Caramel is a turn-based tactical shooter and strategy game in development for PC, console, and mobile.

Mixing and matching gameplay styles isn't unusual for the SteamWorld franchise which has released games in the deck-building, platformer, and Metroidvania genres since the original Tower Defense game was released in 2010. The number of games in development is a little surprising though, as Thunderful plans to release as many SteamWorld games in next two years as it has in the last nine.

Chip ‘n Dale: Rescue Rangers Review

1 year 11 months ago

Chip ‘n Dale: Rescue Rangers premieres Friday, May 20 on Disney+.

An animated pop-culture extravaganza, Chip ‘n Dale: Rescue Rangers is a fast and funny roller coaster into a cyclone of cartoon characters, with clever gags, inventive action, and enough heart and depth to allow a story to eke through.

Directed by The Lonely Island's Akiva Schaffer, this particular Rescue Rangers outing is a meta affair, portraying the famous chipmunk BFFs as actors who once starred on the Rescue Rangers TV series decades earlier. Now, appropriately washed up in typical E! True Hollywood Story fashion (thanks to Dale's solo career attempt), Chip and Dale must bury the past in order to rekindle their friendship and save the day for real.

This hybrid slice of live-action/animation silliness is perhaps the closest thing we'll ever get to a follow up for 1988’s Who Framed Roger Rabbit?, and not just because Roger Rabbit himself pops up briefly. This is a world — a Los Angeles to be more specific — where humans and cartoons co-exist, and where any cartoon who breaks big in show business films their movies just like any other performer, except on an animated set. It’s not a stretch by any means to imagine this being what Roger Rabbit's L.A. would be like 70 years later.

LEGO Star Wars: The Skywalker Saga on Sale

1 year 11 months ago

If, for some reason, you decided you weren't too keen on LEGO Star Wars: The Skywalker Saga at full price, well my patient and frugal friend, the Nintendo Switch version is on sale right now at both Walmart AND Amazon.

LEGO Star Wars: The Skywalker Saga on Sale

It's important to note both Amazon and Walmart's deals are being offered by 3rd party sellers, but they're being fulfilled by the respective retailers. I buy 3rd party stuff all the time and haven't had any problems. At least, not yet.

If you'd prefer, Amazon has the PS4 and the PS5 versions on sale as well, but the mark-down isn't really that exciting compared to the Nintendo Switch version.

Traveller's Tales really did an outstanding job with this one. In our LEGO Star Wars: The Skywalker Saga review we called it "a series of interplanetary playgrounds that are dense with discovery and entertaining diversions."

Basically, even the video game versions of the movies you didn't like are fun to play through. That's saying something, considering how divisive the nine movies making up the Skywalker Saga actually are. Is there anyone who absolutely loves them all? I'm sure there are, and I'm sure they'll be in the comments.

What Unreal Engine 5 Means for the Games Industry

1 year 11 months ago

Epic’s new game engine, Unreal Engine 5, is set to add a new suite of options and seemingly ease the process of game development for developers large and small. That ease of use, plus a drastically improved toolset and multiple features designed to save time for developers, could lead to development methods that look vastly different from previous generations.

But how poised is it to actually change the game development landscape? IGN spoke to a number of both AAA and indie developers to discuss what Unreal Engine 5 brings to the table and the possible ripple effects it could have on the industry. The picture these devs painted of the engine is one of efficiency, increased useability for spread-out dev teams, and the possibility of indie games being larger in scope than ever before.

Nanite

The biggest changes Unreal Engine 5 introduces include Nanite (Unreal’s geometry system), Lumen (its updated lighting system), and advancements in world and data streaming. These of course only scratch the surface, as Unreal 5 also includes changes to physics, fluid simulations, AI operations, character animation, and many more. But let’s examine those big three.

Nanite promises “limitless geometry.” And while that may sound like the 9th circle of hell to those who shared my experience in high school, it actually means that full quality assets, containing millions of tiny triangles can be created or imported to Unreal 5 with tiny hits to performance compared to before.

Arma Reforger First-Look Preview: An Early But Promising Return for a Milsim Great

1 year 11 months ago

Arma Reforger is a work in progress. That point was hammered home over and over again at a recent preview event hosted by developer Bohemia Interactive. It's been almost a decade since the release of Arma 3, and while a formal sequel is still on the horizon, the company is first offering a smaller, scaled-down version of their traditional warfighting precision. The goal, says Bohemia, is for Reforger to be a "bridge" towards Arma 4; using the platform as a testbed to gauge community feedback throughout the rest of the development cycle. That makes a lot of sense considering how Reforger, and the future Arma 4, are both headed to consoles for the first time in the series’ history. The studio now needs to answer questions it never had to ask before. Can a gamepad mesh with the complex logistics of a military simulator? Does the console audience even have an appetite for Arma's many quirks? You can understand why Bohemia wanted to dip their toes in first before taking a dive.

Silent Hill 2 Remake Rumors: Bloober Team CEO Refuses to Comment, But Says New Project 'Will Still Be a Bloober Team Title'

1 year 11 months ago

Following rumors that horror game developer Bloober Team is remaking the legendary Silent Hill 2, CEO Piotr Babieno has said he cannot comment, but hopes to make an announcement about the company's future projects "as soon as we can". He added that its unannounced project will "still be a Bloober Team title", even if it's made in partnership with another company. Babieno also explained that future Bloober games will be bigger and more gameplay-focused than in the past, and will not be "walking sim"-type experiences.

Speaking to IGN at Polish games conference Digital Dragons, Babieno responded to rumors (first reported by influencer Nate the Hate and subsequently journalist Jeff Grubb) about a Silent Hill 2 Remake by saying:

“We can’t comment on anything we are doing because we appreciate our relationship with our partners, of course. So we can’t [say] anything. We will make an announcement about our future projects as soon as we can. So then you will know much more." Chuckling, he added, "Officially."

Techland Reveals First Concept Art of Its Open-World Fantasy RPG

1 year 11 months ago

Techland has revealed the first piece of concept art for its unannounced AAA open-world fantasy action RPG. Additionally, the development team has recently recruited talent that has previously worked at Arkane and CD Projekt Red.

Concept%20art%20from%20Techland%26%2339%3Bs%20fantasy%20RPG%20project.%20Image%20credit%3A%20Technland

The concept art features a man looking at some sort of ancient city surrounded by lush trees, pink vegetation, and waterfalls. Notably, the archetecture of this ruin isn't traditional medieval England in its aesthetic, so we may be in for something slightly left field for AAA fantasy.

For this new IP, the studio has employed narrative director Karolina Stachyra and narrative lead Arkadiusz Borowik, both of whom previously worked on The Witcher 2: Assassins of Kings and The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt.

The rest of the team has similarly notable backgrounds. Recently recruited members include open world director Bartosz Ochman, who previously worked on Cyberpunk 2077 and The Witcher 3. Mario Maltezos, the project's creative director, has worked on Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time and Mad Max, while lead game designer David McClure worked on Deathloop. Lead animator Kevin Quad worked on Horizon Zero Dawn and its DLC, and lead UI designer Marcin Surosz was a UI/UX designer at People Can Fly.

Say Hello To These Lost Scarface 2 Screens Revealing Its Planned Las Vegas Setting

1 year 11 months ago

Screenshots and concept art from a cancelled Scarface game have appeared online after more than a decade.

Scarface 2 was a never-released sequel to 2006's Scarface: The World is Yours from Radical Entertainment, the developer behind The Simpsons: Hit & Run and the Prototype games, and the newly found art reveals a colourful Las Vegas setting.

Mafia Game Videos uploaded the screenshots (spotted by PC Gamer) which show the glorious Las Vegas Strip, Nevada desert, and, of course, a bloody basement or two.

The first Scarface game was well received - IGN said it was great as it did "an absolutely fantastic job of bringing the world of Scarface to gamers" - but the sequel was seemingly cancelled around 2009 for unknown reasons.

Radical was acquired by Activision in 2008 and went on to release the first Prototype game a year later, around the time Scarface 2 was thought to be cancelled.

It later released Prototype 2 in 2012 before being switched to a support studio for Activision, working on games including the original Destiny.

The Valiant, a New Medieval RTS, Announced by THQ Nordic

1 year 11 months ago

THQ Nordic has announced The Valiant, a new RTS set during the 13th century developed by Kite Games. It is, naturally, coming to PC but also console, too, on PS4, PS5, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X/S systems. The Valiant focuses on smaller forces, tactical combat, and RPG-style heroes, with traditional strategy mechanics such as base building pushed to the side. In short: it sounds like Warhammer 40,000: Dawn of War 2 but for historic knights.

The Valiant features a “sweeping” single-player story campaign comprising 15 missions that sees protagonist Theoderich take up arms to stop Ulrich, his former brother-in-arms who is terrorizing Europe and the Holy Land with on a crusade to find the missing pieces of Aaron’s rod, an ancient relic. You will choose which units to take into each mission, and assign skills and equipment for heroes. Then, on the battlefield, fast-paced melee-centric combat will provide brutal and bloody battles.

As for multiplayer, there are both co-operate PvE and PvP options. PvP offers 1v1 and 2v2 scenarios based on control points. Co-op, meanwhile, sees up to three friends attempt to survive in a Last Man Standing mode as waves of enemies, including mini-bosses and bosses, storm your defenses. It sounds a lot like Dawn of War 2’s The Last Stand mode, as if The Valiant wasn’t already looking much like one of the best strategy games of all time.

Everything Shown During the 505 Games Spring 2022 Showcase

1 year 11 months ago

Eiyuden Chronicle: Hundred Heroes was the main attraction heading into today's 505 Games Spring 2022 Showcase, but the anticipated JRPG was more or less absent from this morning's event. Instead, the focus was on Among the Trolls, Stray Blade, Miasma Chronicles, and Eiyuden Chronicle: Rising — the last of which was released just recently. To catch you up, here's everything that was shown in today's stream.

Among the Trolls is a supernatural survival game set in the forests of Finland

Among the Trolls is a supernatural first-person survival game set among Finland's deep forests. Developed by Forbidden Studios, a team comprised of former Skyrim, Fallout 4, and Vampire: The Masquerade developers, it is in some ways as much Firewatch as it is Don't Starve. It will feature both trolls and mid-life crises, with the main character being a Finnish American in their mid-30s who returns to their homeland to reconnect with nature.

Survival mechanics will be based around the idea that "the folk beliefs, spirits, and creatures" around the main character are real, meaning that you can't simply go around chopping down trees lest the forest go dark and corrupted creatures attack. Shamanism will play a key role in the story, and Studio Ghibli is cited as a major influence. That said, building and crafting will remain part of the core gameplay loop, so it won't be too much of a departure from the survival games you know and love.

Scavengers Console Version Cancelled After Developer Sold to Behaviour Interactive

1 year 11 months ago

The PlayStation 4 and Xbox One versions of multiplayer survival game Scavengers have been cancelled as developer Midwinter Entertainment has been sold by parent company Improbable.

As reported by Eurogamer, Midwinter has been sold to Dead by Daylight developer Behaviour Interactive for an unknown amount, with the most of the studio now working on a new project.

The PC version of Scavengers is unaffected as only a small portion of the development team is required to maintain it, though the game is still in Early Access on Steam and has only had a few hundred players since November last year according to Steam DB.

Improbable CEO Herman Narula told Eurogamer that the publisher sold Midwinter as it's now switched focus to metaverse development, but Midwinter appears happy with the sale as studio head Mary Olson said her studio and Behaviour share very similar values and development philosophies.

"We are thrilled to join and learn from a team with proven success across a broad spectrum of IP, while in turn leveraging the strong foundation, culture, and team we've built at Midwinter to expand Behaviour's portfolio," she said.

The console versions of Scavengers already seemed fairly forgotten, as the game's official website still has them pegged for a late 2021 release date.

Take-Two 'Likes Being an Independent Organization' Amid Increased Gaming Acquisition

1 year 11 months ago

Like most other large gaming companies, Take-Two has been a part of a recent flurry of acquisition activity industry-wide. Its planned acquisition of Zynga is set to close by the end of the month, and its Private Division label snapped up Roll7 late last year. But what about Take-Two itself? Is it possible that it, like fellow major publisher Activision-Blizzard, might be acquired by a bigger gaming corporation?

For now, that seems unlikely, based on comments made by CEO Strauss Zelnick in an interview ahead of today's full year and quarterly earnings call.

"We're a public company, and we're here for the shareholders," he told IGN. "That said, our track record of creating value as an independent entireprise is pretty terrific, especially if you exclude the last three months. We think there's plenty of great times ahead, and we like being an independent organization. But we're here for the shareholders."

Zelnick also offered some context for the publisher's recent acquisitions of Zynga and Roll7. He acknowledged the reality of industry consolidation, especially over the last six months. But he added that the increase in overall indistry acquisitions wasn't going to change anything for Take-Two, whose growth he says has "always been largely organic" but "populated with some selective acquisitions along the way."

Take-Two Has 'No Current Plans to Discuss' for FIFA After EA Split

1 year 11 months ago

With EA and the FIFA brand set to part ways, one big question on everyone's minds is: who will pick up the FIFA license to keep making more soccer games? One possibility is Take-Two Interactive, but for now, the company isn't saying whether or not it's in to be the official soccer publisher.

Speaking to CEO Strauss Zelnick ahead of today's earnings call, IGN asked if Take-Two was considering working with FIFA in the future to expand its existing sports line-up.

"We're definitely interested in expanding our opportunities in sports, and FIFA has a great brand and incredible clout, but we have no current plans to discuss," Zelnick replied.

It's understandable that Zelnick wouldn't be able to say much for now, as if there is any discussion about a deal right now, it's likely going on behind closed doors. But Zelnick's praise for the brand isn't the only reason to think Take-Two might be interested. The publisher is one of the few who could conceivably afford the reportedly very expensive license, and already has a track record of sports titles with NBA 2K, WWE 2K, plus whatever it's working on with the NFL.

EA and FIFA announced their split earlier this month, with EA citing a desire for more creative freedom as well as the expensive license among the reasons it opted to go its own way with EA Sports FC in the future. FIFA has confirmed it will continue to release games under the FIFA name, but has not yet said who it will partner with to make this happen.

Take-Two CEO Has 'Heard the Frustration' from #SaveRedDeadOnline Community

1 year 11 months ago

For months now, the Red Dead Online community has been begging developer Rockstar for more significant updates to the game on par with what Grand Theft Auto Online has been getting, using the hashtag #SaveRedDeadOnline. Thus far they've received little in the way of acknowledgement for their movement, until today.

Speaking to IGN ahead of Take-Two's quarterly earnings call, Take-Two CEO Strauss Zelnick affirmed he was aware of the community's frustration, but added that fans would need to look to Rockstar for a response.

"Rockstar Games talks about the updates that are coming, and we're working on an awful lot at Rockstar Games," he said. "I've heard the frustration, it's flattering that they want more content, and more will be said by Rockstar in due time."

When asked if Take-Two intended to continue to support Red Dead Online long-term, Zelnick affirmed that this was the plan. [Update 2:45pm PT: Post-publication, Take-Two Interactive reached out to clarify that this comment was "solely referring to the online servers" and that any future content updates would be up to Rockstar.]

Fall Guys Is Working On Its Own Version Of Mario Maker's Level Creator

1 year 11 months ago

Not only is Fall Guys going free-to-play starting next month, the developers at Mediatonic are also working on adding a level editor to the frantic platforming battle royale.

At the very end of today's Fall Guys Free for All stream, we got a very early look at the new level creator. Similar to Nintendo's Super Mario Maker and other level creation tools, the mode lets players create their own obstacle courses from scratch.

The tool gives creators a catalog of common Fall Guys objects, like swinging axes, conveyor belts, and fruit-shooting cannons, and lets players place them anywhere on the map. As long as you don't exceed the weight limit, it seems you can mix and match objects to create anything that comes to mind.

The customization appears to be fairly in-depth, as an options menu popped up that lets you choose a variety of settings like item size, rotation speed and direction, and more. And — also like Mario Maker — after you finish building the level, you have to prove it can be completed before you can publish it, which suggests we'll see online content sharing where you'll hopefully be able to try out levels other people built, and see how many people test out your own levels.

There's no timetable for when this level creator mode will actually join Fall Guys. In the stream, Mediatonic said, "just to be clear, this mode is still a fair way from release."

Achilles: Legends Untold Early Access Review

1 year 11 months ago

Achilles: Legends Untold puts the “early” in Early Access. Across the board, this action RPG is full of ideas that feel like they are still an epic journey away from being ready. Combat, which has Soulslike ambitions, is competent but a bit flat; the first stage of this world looks good and is full of monsters to kill but devoid of things worth exploring; and the story – beyond its interesting reframing of the death of Achilles by a well-placed arrow from Paris of Troy – is trivial and its characters are rote. And, while it should go without saying that early access games are buggy, at launch Achilles has more than its fair share, even by this standard. In its current state, there’s nothing legendary to talk about.

The imaginative addition to the myth is that after being slain, our titular demigod goes to Tartarus and meets Hades, where they agree that it would be in their mutual interest to let Achilles return to the surface so that he can take his revenge; in return, Hades gets a superhuman tool to do his bidding. Familiar characters, like King Agamemnon, meet the freshly undead Achilles and aren’t always happy to see him. It’s a good start, but the other characters and story elements introduced thus far are largely forgettable, and much of the dialogue is utterly underwhelming.

Once reborn, Achilles is thrown into a colorful, verdant Greece, with the first bits of his new lease on life spent finding Hades’ missing nephew, Hephestus, the god of fire. Once they’re reunited the three of them hatch a plan: they’ll restore the connection between Greece and the underworld so that the shambling undead can go back to their homes. Sounds good to me, what could go wrong?

Asterigos: Curse of the Stars Is a Promising (if Unpolished) Mythic-Fantasy Action-RPG

1 year 11 months ago

As someone who loves the melding of classical myth and epic fantasy, plus keeps having Netflix recommend him “shows with a strong female lead,” Asterigos: Curse of the Stars easily caught my eye when it was announced last fall. I was recently sent a demo build of an early segment, and while it may not be as polished as it could be at this stage, I definitely put down my controller curious to see how this fantastical adventure inspired by a combination of Greek and Roman mythology will come together.

Asterigos casts you as Hilda, a warrior of the Northwind Legion as she investigates the ancient city of Aphes in search of her missing father and its long-buried secrets. The city is said to have been cursed by the gods for its careless overuse of the world’s magic–which Hilda herself seems to be able to harness, though whether this is common for her people or she’s just Extra Special™ is unclear– and the once-great ruin is now filled with dangerous beasts and monsters. I didn’t run into anything as captivating as some of what’s been shown in trailers, though the Pixar-esque design aesthetic (reminiscent of Blizzard's cinematic style or recent mythical adventures like Immortals: Fenyx Rising and Kena: Bridge of Spirits) made even what boiled down to “big alligator” or “giant boar” interesting creatures to square up against.

Cyberpunk 2077 In Unreal Engine 5 Offers a Glimpse Of What CD Projekt Red Was Trying To Pull Off

1 year 11 months ago

Since the release of Cyberpunk 2077, fans have held mixed feelings about the game, which was released in a buggy state after being delayed multiple times. While many players still love Cyberpunk 2077, some fans have taken it upon themselves to improve the somewhat controversial title.

In a recent tech demo, YouTuber and developer Enfant Terrible cut together a reel featuring assets from a multitude of artists to create a vision of Night City using Unreal Engine 5. They include:

According to the video’s caption, the artists utilized tools like environment megapacks from the Epic Marketplace, the MetaHumans Creator from Epic, VFX, and Zbrush to create an impressively realistic world with graphics that rival the original Cyberpunk 2077.

Fall Guys Going Fully Free to Play Alongside Xbox and Switch Release Next Month

1 year 11 months ago

Fall Guys is going fully free to play when it launches on Xbox, Nintendo Switch, PlayStation 5, and Epic Games Store on June 21.

Players who already own the game on PS4 and Steam will be awarded with a Legacy Pack that includes unique cosmetics plus Fall Guy's first paid-for battle pass (branded as a Season Pass) that will be available alongside the current (and free) battle pass.

Developer Mediatonic is also essentially resetting Fall Guys' seasons as June 21 also marks the beginning of "Season 1: Free For All", likely because the game will be fully cross-play and cross-progression between platforms.

All Fall Guys players will therefore be able to compete against each other, and can log in and continue their progress, regardless of whether they're playing on PS4, PS5, Xbox One, Xbox Series, Switch, or PC.

A new currency called Show-Bucks can be used to purchase the Season Pass, but Mediatonic hasn't said how much it will cost or how Show-Bucks will compare to the current Kudos currency which will remain in the game.

The new Season 1: Free For All update also promises the "most jam-packed and blunderful season yet" with new challenges, rewards, and more.

The Xbox and Switch versions of Fall Guys were delayed in April last year from an original release date of summer 2021, with Mediatonic saying at the time that "with so many new opportunities now in our hands" it couldn't hit the original date.

Elden Ring Mod Pits Malenia Against Every Other Boss

1 year 11 months ago

An Elden Ring mod is pitting one of the game's most infamous bosses, Malenia, Blade of Miquella, against every other major boss in the game.

YouTube user Garden of Eyes - who also modded legendary summon Let Me Solo Her into Elden Ring and gave Bloodborne a first person mode - uploaded a video of Malenia taking on 25 other bosses.

The fights can be watched as if from one of Elden Ring's suspicious colosseums through a spectator camera, with Malenia starting with Grafted Scion before later fighting everyone from Radahn to Godrick.

The video is also a great insight into the difference in strength between bosses that seemed impossible early on in Elden Ring and end-game fights like Malenia's.

She cuts down the Tree Sentinel in just a few swipes, for example, and the poor tutorial boss, Solider of Godrick, is one-hit killed.

It was revealed in 2019 that Sony was developing a Twisted Metal series, but now the wheels are firmly in motion. Cobra Kai writer and producer Michael Jordan Smith is showrunning, writing, and executive producing the half-hour series, which will be based on an original story from the Twisted Metal universe written by Deadpool scribes Rhett Reese and Paul Wernick.

Zelda: Skyward Sword HD's Non-Motion Sword Controls Took a Year and a Half To Perfect

1 year 11 months ago

It took developer Tantalus Media a year and a half to turn The Legend of Zelda: Skyward Sword's original Wii motion controls into regular button inputs for Nintendo Switch HD version.

CEO Tom Crago shared the trials and tribulations of the game's development with the Fragments of Silicon podcast (as spotted by Nintendo Everything) and also dismissed rumours of a Zelda: Twilight Princess port for Switch.

The original Wii version of Skyward Sword used the console's Motion Plus accessory, meaning protagonist Link's sword swings would match the direction of the player's Wii Remote. While the Switch does support motion controls, the Switch Lite does not, meaning the developer had to translate those controls into more traditional inputs.

"Having it work button-only, joystick only was probably the biggest challenge for us," Crago said. "It took a year and a half, so it was a long process making this game.

He added: "If we hadn’t figured that out, Nintendo just wouldn’t have published it. They’re not going to put something out there that doesn’t really resonate with The Legend of Zelda, with the fanbase, and with the legacy. We knew that we really needed to get that right."

Crago also said that Tantalus, who remastered Twilight Princess for 2016's Wii U HD edition, hasn't been asked by Nintendo to create the long-rumoured Switch port.

Marvel Midnight Suns: New Rating Suggests it May Release Soon

1 year 11 months ago

Marvel's Midnight Suns may be due to release soon following an official rating in South Korea.

As reported by Video Games Chronicle, Reddit user LongJonSiIlver spotted the rating (below) which pegs the XCOM-style game as suitable for those aged 15 years and over.

Games are usually only presented to ratings boards (like the ESRB and PEGI) once they're in a complete or near-complete state so that an accurate assessment of suitability can be given, meaning Midnight Suns may almost be ready to be released.

The Game Rating and Administration Committee gave Midnight Suns its "suitable for 15 years and over" rating as it includes bad language and violence towards living things.

Combat in the game is largely similar to the rebooted XCOM series but players take on the role of The Hunter, a customisable character that works with superheroes including Iron Man, Ghost Rider, and Wolverine.

Arma Reforger Has Seemingly Leaked Online and Teases the Future of the Franchise

1 year 11 months ago

A leaked marketing guide appears to confirm that Arma 4 will not be the next entry in the franchise from Bohemia Interactive, but that it instead will be a PC and console game called Arma Reforger.

As reported by PC Gamer, the marketing guide was posted on Reddit's Gaming Leaks and Rumors and appears to be credible, especially since Bohemia is gearing up to reveal the "Future or Arma" on May 17, 2022.

The guide says that, due to the "complexity of developing Arma 4," Arma Reforger will be a "bridge" between Arma 3 and what will eventually be the official fourth game in the series. While it may not be the Arma 4 people were hoping for, it does look to be using Bohemia's new Enfusion engine.

Arma Reforger will allegedly take place on the fictional island of Everon in the Atlantic ocean and will be set in "an alternate 1989" during a conflict between the US and Soviet Union. The game is being billed as a "military simulation game (as opposed to a 'simulator')," which hints it may be more accessible than the mainline games.

Bohemia hopes this game, which will be on its new Enfusion engine, will get modders comfortable with the new tools in time for Arma 4, whenever it arrives. In doing so, Arma 4 should have a thriving modding community at launch.

Fans Track Down Pioneering Developer Who Brought Female Representation To Games

1 year 11 months ago

After nearly 40 years away from the games industry, Van Mai, the pioneering woman who wrote on Atari 2600's Wabbit and helped create the first console game to star a human girl, has been found.

As reported by the Video Game History Foundation, Polygon began searching for this developer that went by the name "Ban Tran" - a Vietnamese woman who worked at Apollo to develop Wabbit before the company declared bankruptcy in 1982.

Tran would leave the company and work on an unreleased Solar Fox conversion for the Atari 5200 at MicroGraphic Image, but then she seemingly disappeared from the industry. There were many who attempted to find her, but she was not found until recently thanks to the help of collaborators at the Video Game History Foundation.

A Discord member named SoH, who is part of a channel dedicated to finding Ban Tran in the Video Game History Foundation's Discord, suggested that someone should contact the National Archives in Texas to try to find the bankruptcy records for Apollo.

Citizen Sleeper Offers Hope In the Midst of a Capitalist Space Hellscape

1 year 11 months ago

I’ve had a bad case of the post-Elden Ring blues lately. After 130 hours of non-stop FromSoft adventure, I was struggling to find another game that compelled me enough to do more than pick it up for an hour or two before sighing and putting it back down again. Then I played Citizen Sleeper, and ravenously devoured the entire thing in two days.

Citizen Sleeper scratches the parts of my brain that loved Disco Elysium, but it’s both shorter and (despite its dystopia premise) gentler overall. You play as a Sleeper, an artificial vessel created by a mega corporation to work off a debt for a human being. While the human lies frozen in stasis somewhere else in the universe, their consciousness was transplanted into the Sleeper and forced to do awful manual labor under grim conditions. But that life massively sucked, so the Sleeper fled, arriving on a space station called the Eye in hopes of building a life of their own.

Zenless Zone Zero Is a Hip Urban RPG From the Creators Of Genshin Impact

1 year 11 months ago

Genshin Impact developers HoYoverse have officially announced their latest ARPG titled Zenless Zone Zero, a brand-new urban fantasy HoYoverse IP set in a world in which contemporary civilization has been destroyed by a supernatural disaster known as the Hollows.

Players in the game take on the role of a Proxy, a special professional who guides people in their exploration of Hollows. Players are tasked with helping them explore the Hollows, battle their enemies, and achieve their goals. In the process, they’ll come to learn more about their story and their place in it.

“We would like to invite players to discover [New Eridu], the last shelter for urban civilization due to the calamity [Hollows]. Together with a group of distinctive partners, they will fight alongside each other and unravel the mysteries in this post-apocalyptic world,” HoYoverse says in a press release.

In New Eridu, a post-apocalyptic metropolitan city, players will embark on an adventure with diverse characters and experience action-oriented combat.

Alongside the title release, HoYoverse also released this trailer, which features a look into the game’s characters, “futuristic and 3D anime-style art,” and world. Featured in the trailer are the game’s protagonists, Unagi, Billy, Anbi, and NosTradamus, alongside a closer look into New Eridu and the monsters ravaging it.

It featured a mix of gameplay, cutscenes, and what seems to be an arena-based type of combat system, where players fight off the Ethereal in preset combat stages as opposed to in an open world.

Master Chief Just Lost His Virginity In the Halo TV Series, and Fans Are Divided

1 year 11 months ago

Warning: this article contains some spoilers for Halo: The TV Series Episode 8!

The live-action Halo series has made a number of significant changes to the established mythology of the games, and Episode 8 has ushered in what may be the biggest shake-up yet. Master Chief appears to have just lost his virginity.

This is a pretty big departure from the Halo games, where John-117 is depicted as an ascetic super-soldier who only shows a sentimental attachment to his holographic companion Cortana, and has likely never had sex due to being kidnapped into Spartan programmer as a child. The series hasn't exactly followed that path over the course of Season 1, with Pablo Schreiber's Master Chief frequently removing his helmet and dealing with a surge of memories and emotions after encountering a Forerunner artifact.

That artifact also happens to be the reason for John's sexual encounter in Episode 8. The series has introduced a brand new character in Charlie Murphy's Makee, a human who was kidnapped by the Covenant at a young age and elevated to a position of power in that alien theocracy. John and Makee are seemingly the only two beings in the galaxy who can interact with the artifacts. After experiencing a shared vision of the mysterious Halo station in Episode 6, the two characters give in to the hormonal rush and have sex in Episode 8. And just to make things extra weird, Cortana is watching the entire time.
