Amazon's PS5 Placeholder Page Is Up Ahead of Preorders

3 years 7 months ago
Preorders for PS5 will begin tomorrow at select retailers, according to a tweet from Sony. What retailers, and what time tomorrow, remains to be seen. We've reached out to Sony for more details and we will update as soon as possible. Amazon already has a PS5 placeholder page, which you should absolutely bookmark. Also, bookmark this article for updates as fast as we can. At least we now know how much PS5 costs: $499 for the standard version, and $399 for the discless model, both with a November 12 release date in the US. At the start of the month in PS5 news, developers shared their takes on the SSD and 3D Audio features of the upcoming console. It's shaping up to be a very cool console, even if we still have no price or availability numbers. Sony also set up a page for PS Plus members to sign up for a chance to secure a PS5 preorder directly from Sony. We also got news Ratchet & Clank: A Rift Apart is definitely a PS5 launch game, but during Gamescom it was confirmed to be a "launch window" game, which could mean anything. In spite of dragging its feet on an official PS5 release date announcement until finally revealing it during the September 16 event, Sony reiterated the PS5 is NOT being pushed into 2021 much earlier this year. If you're just here for the console wars, you can check out our article on where to sign up for Xbox Series X preorders.

PS5 Preorder Notification Sign-Up Pages

Also, while you're here, you can get much more immediate stock updates by following IGN Deals on Twitter. Here are the retailers with placeholder pages for PS5 in the US, but again, no preorder info. With the exception of Amazon, all the links below have sign-up forms so you can get email notifications for more info on the PS5. If you're anything like me, you've entered your email address in all of them. Maybe you're like me and you entered it in twice. I'm not here to judge. Will PS5 Be Easy to Get?

That's a tough call. We won't know until it's gone, basically. Sony upped its production earlier this year, anticipating higher demand for the system. Whether or not they can reach that level remains to be seen.

PS5 Price

The PS5 standard console with a disc drive costs $499, while the discless version will cost $399. [ignvideo url="https://www.ign.com/videos/2020/08/20/first-ps5-trailer-teases-next-gen-features"]

PS5 Game Prices

The good news is we know games like Far Cry 6 support free upgrades from PS4 to PS5. While it looked as though PS5 and Xbox Series X games will cost $70, more recent developments seem to point to publishers holding onto the current $59.99 price for new games, at least for the time being. It appears now many first-party Sony PS5 games will cost $70 after all, including Demon's Souls and Destruction All Stars. However, Spider-Man: Miles Morales has a $50 price tag, and looks amazing by the way. For a look at the first round of PS5 games, make sure to check out our guide to the PS5 launch game line-up.

Will My PS4 Controller Work on PS5?

No. Well, not at least for PS5 games. Sony confirmed the DualShock 4 won't work for playing PS5 games, but you WILL be able to use your existing PS4 controllers to play "supported PS4 games." Speaking of which...

Will PS5 Be Backwards Compatible?

Yes. Well, for PS4, we know some supported games will work. In a (now removed) entry on its support page, Ubisoft said of PS5 backwards compatibility it "will be available for supported PlayStation 4 titles, but will not be possible for PlayStation 3, PlayStation 2, or PlayStation games." So unlike Xbox, which is leaning into backwards compatibility all the way back to the original Xbox as a selling point, it looks like PS5 backwards compatibility comes with some asterisks. However, Sony introduced the PlayStation Plus Collection, Sony's answer to Xbox Game Pass. At launch, PS Plus members will be able to download and play some of the biggest PS4 games as part of their subscription.
