Pat Baer's Top Animes Of 2021

2 years 2 months ago

Pat Baer is a comedian currently living in South Carolina who you may have seen at various PAXes with his panels Pat Baer’s Anime Club, The Improvised Postmortem, and League of Heels. You also may have encountered him on Twitch, where he builds Gundams and LEGO. He hopes to move back to NYC in 2022.

2021 was another year where I stuck with only a few video games, but watched a lot of anime. And once again the fine folks at Giant Bomb let me share a list of my favorite anime of 2021! If you like your lists in video format, I’ve got you covered here: click!

Honorable mention goes to The Faraway Paladin, which starts as a slow and patient exploration of what it means to be given a second chance at life, but by the end of the season is just another decent isekai.

Before Jess got hired at Giant Bomb as a video producer a few months ago, she was a SomethingAwful Let's Play forums alum, making a bunch of LPs for Silent Hill games like a big dumb idiot. This cool job is her first foray into using her "IRL" name online, so everything else she's ever done has been under the name VoidBurger. Follow her on Youtube, some other Youtube, a third Youtube, and also Twitter, and Twitch and all other fine hustle hellscapes.

Jan Ochoa's Top 10 Games of 2021

2 years 2 months ago

This has been a tough year for numerous reasons. I don't need to list the specific reasons, but I definitely felt like my tank was running on empty a lot of the year. Hell, a couple weeks ago I was even debating with myself whether or not I still enjoyed or liked video games anymore. I've been juggling feelings of inadequacy and general emptiness on and off constantly. Like I've had a weird underlying feeling of "survivor's guilt" bubbling under the surface. My sleep sucks. I have such a short fuse lately. The only thing consistent is that I feel like I'm constantly waking up on the wrong side of the bed.

Burnout? Great game.

Let's take a deep breath. Okay, let's take another. Did I have to tell y'all to exhale because that goes without saying I think. Sick - now it's time to look at the big picture we got going on and it turns out that there may be more highlights than I thought. I ran a race with my best friends, my partner got into grad school, met and then got to hire Jess, started a Power Ranger podcast with Matt, got to run it back and do a couple of podcasts with good ol' Benjie P, I even hosted the Bombcast a couple times, and shoot I even got promoted. I know that the year for Giant Bomb isn't what everyone expected, there's a lot of negativity online and everyone's feelings are valid. But yo dawg, put your TRUST in me. WE got this. Let's talk about some GAMES NOW HUH?!

Here’s a quick list of stuff in no particular order that ALMOST made my Top 10

  • Ratchet and Clank: Rift Apart
  • Fuga: Melodies of Steel
  • Loop Hero
  • Knockout City
  • Psychonauts 2
  • Shin Megami Tensei V
  • Wildermyth
  • Unpacking
  • Persona 5 Strikers

Actually I just wanted to shout out a couple more things

OK, forget whatever I'm going to write about whenever I get to the top video games of the year later on down this page. The video game of 2021 is Outriders. Outriders is the 2021 of video games. Outriders is the game I played while I was waiting to get to the other side of wherever it was that I was then, in hopes of getting to something better on the other side. It wasn't a bad year, and Outriders was not a bad game. But in a lot of ways I was just trying to get through it and get on to whatever is next.

I never did finish Outriders, but then these first weeks of 2022 have felt a lot like 2021, too, so hey, maybe that balances out.

The release cadence and quality of video games felt a little herky-jerky all year. Many of the big games were things that had been delayed into their eventual 2021 release window, and a lot of stuff launched in weird states of not-quite-ready. The video game industry's transition to working from home happened in 2020, and things were probably smoother by 2021, but... not the sort of thing you'd actually call "smooth."

Rorie's Games Of The Year (Good And Bad)

2 years 2 months ago
No Caption Provided

2021 started off with me getting a sleek and shiny new 3080 in February! SMILES! It broke in September! FROWNS. But I got it RMAed by NVIDIA! I was back to smiling at that point, and here we are, with another long year in the books.

Those of you who know me from the site know my tastes, probably: I like big flashy games with lots of guns and explosions and I like them to look very nice indeed with a high framerate. There’s a reason that DOOM Eternal was my GOTY last year! This year I felt like my gameplay habits were somehow even more along these lines, as I wanted to stress my video card and big-ass monitor as much as I could. So most of what I gravitated to this year was big flashy AAA stuff. I've become a gaming basic bitch and I’m pretty OK with that.

Jeff Bakalar’s Top 10 games and games-adjacent things of 2021

2 years 2 months ago
No Caption Provided

By now you probably know Jeff Bakalar. He was the guy hanging around the Giant Bomb East studio so much that they eventually asked him to co-host the Giant Beastcast. Then one day a pandemic hit and everyone left. He wanted that rotating chair to stop spinning so bad, well guess what, joke’s on him now.

Right, so now that the dark prophecy has completed and I’ve moved over full time, it seems appropriate that my 2021 list be mostly video games and not some other collection of things I really like and want to force you to read about.

Full disclosure though, a couple pinball machines found their way on my list this year because they are great games that deserve the attention. You didn’t think I’d let this whole thing be console or PC did you? Aww, you’re silly.

My Twitter

2021 was lookin OK? ‘till it didn’t. It was rough. You know, one of the biggest things that happened was the cross-country move to Atlanta. That’s Big and Exciting and… Stressful. Marry that with my mom passing a couple weeks before, a foot that was infected (and that I had to end up getting a toe amputated), and more than a couple of hospital stays for various reasons and… holy man…

BUT!!!

2022. My year (I hope I’m not jinxing this). The number 22 is super dominant in my life. I don’t really believe in this sort of stuff, but hell, this is some crazy coincidental shit.

  • I was born on the 22nd of March
  • My oldest son was born on 12/2 (kind of a 22?)
  • My daughter? May 22nd. At exactly 10:22PM which, in military time is: 22:22
  • My youngest son, born a week late… on the 22nd

Stuff’s crazy, right?

What does that mean for this year? That it’s gonna be a crazy good year! Or it’s all gonna come crashing down. Who the hell knows?!? YAY!

The Community Spotlight 2022.01.22

2 years 2 months ago

First, here's a reminder to check out Rorie's "Giant Fire Bomb Side Chat" post on the forums! If you want to learn about the plans for GOTY next week or when merch will be restocked, this is the post for you! For anyone that was a fan of Vinny's forum posts about the site's plans at the start of the pandemic, it is definitely worth a read as well.

For those still confused about GOTY 2021 content, it will debut from the January 24th and will continue through the 30th. As a result, there will not be a Community Spotlight next week. Most likely I will have a JAM PACKED Spotlight on February 5th! Speaking of staff content, Armed and Rangerous is back and the series' return features a special guest in the form of Stephen Fu! With that in mind, let's jump into the "good stuff!"

Giant Bomb's guest lists and GOTY podcasts will begin publishing the week of January 24th!

On a related note, the 2021 Community GOTY voting HAS BEGUN! If you experienced issues trying to submit your vote earlier this week, the submission form has been fixed. Feel free to report other technical issues or bugs with the community voting on the official error reporting thread. If you wish to vote for a game released prior to 2021, go ahead and do that! Ho ho ho! Welcome to an incredibly FESTIVE edition of the Giant Bomb Community Spotlight. I, @zombiepie, am once again honored to be your host this week! As many of you celebrate Christmas with friends and family or by yourselves, I just wish to thank you all for all of your support this year. May your holiday celebrations go without a hitch and I wish you to be safe during this time. With that in mind, as Rorie shared during the 12/23/2021 UPF, please be aware the staff may host some unofficial streams from time to time, but for many, the week of 12/27/2021 to 12/31/2021 will be a much-needed break.

Some of you are still asking about when GOTY will be hosted. GOTY content has been moved to some time in January, much like last year. Likewise, there will be community voting for a "User Pick" GOTY, but the start date for that is still unknown. That said, that shouldn't stop any of you from working on the expected GOTY blogs and lists that usually hit the site! In fact, this edition of the Community Spotlight will mark the start of a dedicated section to user-created GOTY content! Scroll down and read how YOU can get your 2021 GOTY list or blog on the next Spotlight!

Giant Bomb Premium Is On Sale Now!

GET GIANT BOMB PREMIUM FOR A FULL YEAR AT $35!

ALREADY A MEMBER? EXTEND YOUR PREMIUM AT THE SALE PRICE!

“Folks, it’s been a heck of a year, hasn’t it?” That sentence has been how I usually start these sale posts, but here, now, I feel like I can firmly state that it’s been a HECK of a year. Giant Bomb saw some friends leave, some friends return, and some new friends come aboard for some extra special friend-en-ing. We made new shows, brought on new contributors, and found all sorts of new fun! And then we had that fun together with you, I hope!

We’re still working on a lot of stuff around here, visible or otherwise: new content mixes, new edited Quick Looks (for when you don’t have time for a full “Quick” Look, am I right?), and new production schedules to keep you up to date with what’s going. It’s a lot of change! But what hasn’t changed and is still most important of all: we still need your support to help keep this place up and running!

It’s been almost 12 years since we started Giant Bomb Premium, and the basic gist of it hasn’t changed: you kick us some cash, we keep on trying to make cool stuff (without all those pesky ads). Your support has kept this dumb ol’ train running - and with your help, we can aim towards continuing to hire more full-time crew, make some of the sweetest merch we can think of, and maybe even one day have one of those holiday parties we've heard so much about!

Hello and welcome to the latest edition of the Giant Bomb Community Spotlight! I, @zombiepie, am once again honored to be your host especially during the week before Christmas! I have no idea if I will be able to get around to publishing a Community Spotlight during Christmas Eve or possibly earlier, but if I do not, I wish you all a very merry winter holiday celebration to each and every one of you. Please stay safe and celebrate responsibly this year.

In terms of site-related news, the staff have revealed that their GOTY content has been moved to some time in January, much like last year. That said, that shouldn't stop any of you from working on the expected GOTY blogs and lists that usually hit the site! You can expect more details about Community voting and GOTY list-sharing soon-ish.

Last week, the staff successfully hosted the Giant Bombathon event! If you missed the stream, the archive is provided below and is accessible to all uses, including those who do not have premium. Many thanks to Jess for getting the archive up in record time. Quick production note to those pointing out that the transition from Part 1 to 2 in the archives seems to be missing something. Long story short, Jan wasn't back yet and ready to transition and the team started a little early by accident!

Hello and welcome to the latest edition of the Giant Bomb Community Spotlight. I, @zombiepie, am once again honored to be your host as we look back at the best community-created endeavors from the previous week. When it comes to the site, we have a bit of "housekeeping" worth addressing.

Firstly, remember that Giant Bomb premium is on sale until the end of the year.

Secondly, for those of you that have checked out the Giant Bomb Emporium, many of you have discovered that the beanies and water bottles have sold out. Mr. Rorie has placed a reorder for both, but there is no timetable on when they will become available again.

The Community Spotlight 2021.11.27

2 years 4 months ago

For those of you living in the United States, I hope you all had a very happy Thanksgiving. For those of you that live elsewhere, I hope you enjoyed the previous week safely. When it comes to site-related news, by far the most important is related to fan requests for long-form and unedited Quick Looks to make a return. As a compromise, Giant Bomb is rebranding its old clips YouTube account Nuke Dot Com and will now post unedited Quick Looks there. For those wondering why Giant Bomb is posting edited Quick Looks and videos on its main channel, it's complicated. But, the long story short is that the current YouTube algorithm does not like videos that are more than thirty minutes long. With recent changes, YouTube ranks videos with more “complete watches” higher than longer videos where people bail throughout even if those longer videos have high view counts. As they say, it is what it is, and with this second account, you should be able to enjoy your normal video content however you please.

The next bit of housekeeping stems from the recent merch and premium sale. Remember, the sale will continue until the end of the year. However, if you renew automatically during a sale, it will be for full price. If this happens to you, there are options on how to get the sale price. First, if you send the store code you receive to support at giantbomb.com where Rorie can cancel it and refund you to the sale price. Or you can use that code in the store!

Hello, Giant Bomb community. Welcome to the latest edition of the Giant Bomb Community Spotlight! I, @zombiepie, am once again honored to be your host as we look back at the best community created offerings from the week. Before we get to that, we have some site-related housekeeping to discuss. First, many thanks to Dave Lang for streaming for Giant Bomb's Extra Life team and raising over $50,000! If you missed the fun, remember donation pages are open until December 31, 2021.

In terms of premium content, this week had two big announcements. First, last Monday saw the debut of the Voicemail Dump Truck. If you have enjoyed Ben's voice mail bits during the main podcast, they have been spun off into their own premium show. Second, Jan is being guided through the first Silent Hill game by Jess in a new show titled "Run for the Hills." Finally, premium subscriptions will be one sale until the end of the year. If you need a gift for a fellow Giant Bomb fan, look no further.

Hello and welcome to the latest edition of the Giant Bomb Community Spotlight! I, @zombiepie, am once again honored to be your host as we look back at the best community-generated content from the last week! Surprising no one, the big theme this week are the many reviews for Metroid Dread authored by community members. Whether you have enjoyed the game or not, feel free to join the community in assessing the game.

In case you missed it earlier, Rorie and Jeff Bakalar hosted a Q&A session with community members through Discord! If you want to know more about the future of the site and what they have been up to recently, give it a listen! Topics discussed include games they have enjoyed playing as well as the state of the Best of Giant Bomb videos.

Speaking of which, the number one question the past two weeks has been about the status of the Best of Giant Bomb videos. First, as Rorie states in this thread, Giant Bomb has Derek, the author of the series, working on "other stuff." Additionally, Derek has said they want to take a bit of a break from the videos before they re-asses where they want to go with them next.

Hello and welcome to the latest edition of the Giant Bomb Community Spotlight! I, @zombiepie, am once again honored to be your host as we look back at the best creative endeavors from the community!

The first, and probably the most important, bit of housekeeping is related to "Ranking of Evil," which recently published its first episode. The confusion stems from whether or not Ranking of Evil will be free or a premium exclusive after its first episode. As Jan state in the comments of Episode 1, "Ranking of Fighters was a free show, Ranking of Evil will also be a free joint too." Additionally, future episodes will publish on Mondays and the hope is to release a new episode every two weeks.

I also want to give big props to this comment on YouTube. It is most excellent.

Last week I informed everyone about Drew's yearly charity effort for National MS Society! Drew managed to raise $68,248 of his goal of $75,000 and beat out teams led by Google! Regardless, here's a link to the video archive of their charity stream, and don't forget, you can continue to donate to their page to help them get to their goal! Donate what you can and if you cannot; spread the word!

In case you missed it, Jeff will be off the site for a while as his wife recently gave birth to their second child! If you have not done so already, please congratulate them on Twitter! However, I do want to commend @voidburger as she was a great addition to this week's UPF panel.

Speaking of UPF, here's the round-up of premium programs in case you missed something:

Hello and welcome to the latest edition of the Giant Bomb Community Spotlight! I, @zombiepie, am once again honored to be your host as we look back at the best community-created works from the last week. First, let's talk about quick "programming note!" Jeff Grubb's GrubbSnax is changing its start time to 8:30a PT/11:30a ET! This week's edition was the first to air at this time, so, please keep that in mind in the future.

Dan Auer, the previous design manager for Giant Bomb and GameSpot, has announced they are leaving and have cited mental health and betterment as their reasons. Please respect their privacy on the reason, but also thank them for the many logos and works of art they have provided over the years!

In better news, Jan announced they were promoted to the position of "Senior Producer" at Giant Bomb! Congratulate them in this new step forward with their career if you have not done so already! Speaking of Jan, their mother recently retired.

VoidBurger was the editor behind "The Very Online Show 05: Breaking Brendan Fraser" and while I feel like I say this every time, but this is her best work yet. If you have any civil and polite suggestions, please use the link above to send them her way.

Hello and welcome to the latest edition of the Giant Bomb Community Spotlight! I, @zombiepie, am once again honored to be your host as we go back and check out the best community created content from the last week!

I hate to start things off with a bug report, but this is important. There have been multiple reports from users saying that premium videos have stopped working on FireFox. However, Rorie needs YOUR HELP in replicating the issue!

As mentioned last week, friend of the site, Michael Higham has left GameSpot. The good news is that they have announced they are not leaving the games press and will be joining Fanbyte's FFXIV coverage team.

Your dedicated premium features this week are:

Due to the timeliness of the episode, this week's episode of The Very Online Show, which covered OnlyFans' original plan to ban pornographic content, will be made free for everyone.

I think I am officially
I think I am officially "sold" on Bak 2 skool.

Hello everyone and welcome to the latest edition of the Giant Bomb Community Spotlight. I, @zombiepie, am once again honored to be your host as we look back at the wonderful things the community has been up to recently. We have a bit of a shorter-length episode of the Spotlight this week, but that should make it even easier to check everything out and support your fellow community members!

Jeff's move was underway last week, hence his temporary absence. He should be back to celebrate the 700th episode of the Bombcast! For community members new and old, remember to check in on that episode of the podcast as it is bound to be packed with memorable moments.

For premium subscribers, here are links to this week's new stuff in case you missed them the first time.:
